Does your class matter in Elden Ring?
Yes, for your opening character: each class begins with its own attributes and equipment. But it does not permanently lock you into one way of playing. Bandai Namco’s official Elden Ring Classes page calls class “a starting point” and says your class is never a limitation.
That makes the practical choice less about finding a universally strongest class and more about choosing a start that makes the first hours enjoyable. A sorcery-oriented opening, for example, calls for different priorities than a close-range melee approach.
Which Elden Ring class fits your playstyle?
Astrologer: start with sorcery
Choose Astrologer if you want to begin with a sorcery-oriented character. It is the official page’s example of a class that wields sorceries.

Samurai: begin with precise melee attacks
Samurai is a natural fit if you are drawn to precise slashing attacks. Bandai Namco’s class description highlights the Samurai’s precise slashes.
Prophet: focus on incantations
Choose Prophet if sacred incantations are the style you want to explore. The official class page uses Prophet as its incantation-focused example.

Wretch: opt for a stripped-down opening
Bandai Namco describes Wretch as “bare and unbroken.” That makes it an intuitive choice if you want a stripped-down start, but the description alone does not establish exact starting equipment or attributes.
Other classes: compare the opening, not a supposed ranking
The game has ten original starting classes, with different starting attribute distributions. EIP Gaming’s class comparison overview covers all ten. Treat class choice as a question of which opening setup suits you; the sources do not establish a universal best class.

Which attributes should guide your choice?
Attribute functions are more useful than class labels when you are deciding what kind of character to start. Bandai Namco’s stats guide lists eight attributes and explains three especially relevant to early preferences:
- Vigor determines HP. It matters if you want more health.
- Mind determines FP, the resource used for spells and skills. It matters if you expect to use those often.
- Endurance determines stamina and affects maximum equipment load. It matters for stamina use and carrying equipment.
The same guide lists Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Faith, and Arcane as the other attributes. Check your character’s attributes in the Status menu. After you meet Melina, you can level attributes at a Site of Grace.

Can you change your build later?
Your starting class does not define your character’s permanent playstyle. The publisher explicitly frames class as a starting point, so choose for the setup you want now rather than treating the decision as an irreversible commitment. Your starting attributes and gear still shape the opening, which is why an immediately appealing style can make the early game feel more comfortable.

- Pick the combat style you want to try first. Use Astrologer as the sorcery example, Samurai for precise melee slashes, or Prophet for sacred incantations.
- Decide what matters most in the opening. Consider HP through Vigor, FP through Mind, or stamina and equipment load through Endurance.
- Choose the class description that matches that start. If a stripped-down opening sounds appealing, consider Wretch; its description does not provide an exact inventory or stat breakdown.
- Check the resulting character. View attributes in the Status menu, then level them at a Site of Grace after meeting Melina.
