When a Minecraft server hosted by BisectHosting won’t start, the problem almost always sits in one of two places: the control panel never passes your Start request to the server, or the server starts and then stops or crashes. This article assumes “Bisect server” means a Minecraft server hosted by BisectHosting. The fastest way to separate the two is the Console tab in the Starbase panel. If the console shows the server loading and then printing errors, the fault is inside the server. If the panel itself will not respond, the cause is more likely on the provider side.
Sort the symptom before you change anything
Your first job is to decide which of two failures you are seeing. The fixes are different, and treating one as the other wastes time and can damage working files.
- Panel or power controls fail. The page does not load, or pressing Start produces no response from the server. Nothing reaches the console. Go to the provider status check described below.
- The server process starts, then fails. Start is accepted, the console shows output, and the server exits, stays in a failed state, or crashes during startup. This is a server-side problem, and the console output is your evidence.
Capture the first error in the console
BisectHosting’s console guide, updated February 25, 2026, describes the console this way: “The Console window displays real-time logs for monitoring server activities.” Use it as your first diagnostic tool, and follow these steps before editing any file or reinstalling anything.
- Open your server in the Starbase panel and select the Console tab.
- Press Start, then wait until the output stops changing.
- Scroll to the top of the startup output for that attempt and find the first line marked as an error or exception. Later lines are often consequences of that first failure, not the cause.
- Copy that first error and the few lines around it into a text file. A screenshot of the final lines of a crash often hides the original cause.
- Only after you have that text, compare it with the causes below.
Match the fix to the error
Each of the following patterns has a different remedy. If your error does not match one of them, skip to the last section.
Mod loading errors
Mod errors usually name the mod that failed. Startup can fail for any of these reasons:
- The mod was built for a different Minecraft version than the one running.
- The mod requires a different modloader, or the wrong modloader is selected.
- The mod depends on another mod that is missing or the wrong version.
- A client-only mod, such as a purely visual or interface mod, was uploaded to the server.
Check the named mod against its Minecraft version, modloader and dependencies. Remove client-only mods from the server. BisectHosting notes that temporarily removing an affected mod can help identify the cause. Back up the mods folder first, and change one thing at a time so you know which change made the difference.

Java version mismatch
Minecraft versions need a matching Java runtime. BisectHosting’s Java guide, as published in 2026, maps Minecraft versions to Java as follows:
| Minecraft version | Java version (per BisectHosting’s 2026 guide) |
|---|---|
| 1.16 and earlier | Java 8 |
| 1.17 through 1.20.4 | Java 17 |
| 1.20.5 through 1.21.11 | Java 21 |
| 26.1 and above | Java 25 |
The guide states that Java Adoptium is the default runtime and warns that modpacks may require something different. Confirm the Minecraft and modloader version in your panel, then check the runtime options the panel currently offers. Because these requirements change with new releases, treat this table as a 2026 reference, not a permanent rule.

JSON – Exception in server tick loop
BisectHosting links this specific message to three files: ops.json, usercache.json and whitelist.json. Its documented remedy is narrow:
- Stop the server.
- Open the Files tab and delete
ops.json,usercache.jsonandwhitelist.json. - Start the server. The files are recreated automatically.
Use this only when the exact message appears. Operator and whitelist entries are stored in these files, so download copies first. If you need those entries, add them back once the files regenerate. Do not apply this deletion to any other error.

No matching cause
If the first error matches none of the patterns above, avoid reinstalling, deleting the world, upgrading hardware, or removing files at random. Those steps destroy evidence and can create new problems. Gather the console output and the latest server log, then contact BisectHosting technical support.

If the panel does not load or its power controls do nothing, look at BisectHosting’s live status page first. A control-panel incident dated September 11 to 12, 2026, was resolved with browser steps that BisectHosting recommended: clear the browser cache, refresh, try a different browser or a private window, and open a support ticket if none of that helps. That incident is historical. Check the live status page before assuming a current outage, and do not apply the browser steps if the status page shows no incident.

Escalate to support with evidence
Use the Technical Support route in BisectHosting’s Help Center. The Help Center’s log-submission article explains how to attach a file named latest and include your server ID. That article describes a Minecraft client log. For a server that will not boot, attach the server-side latest log as well, and name each file in your message so support knows which is which. Include:
- Your server ID.
- The Minecraft version and modloader, as shown in the panel.
- The first error line you copied from the console.
- The latest server log.
- Any change you made since the server last started, such as adding or removing a mod or changing the Java runtime.
A report with these details lets support start from the actual failure rather than asking you to repeat the steps.
