In Java Edition, a villager’s higher price is most often tied to demand for that specific trade, with player reputation as a second documented factor. The increase may affect one offer rather than everything the villager sells, and it may not appear at every restock. Bedrock Edition’s official material on this topic is narrower, so the exact cause depends on which edition and version you are playing.
What Mojang documents about villager price changes
Mojang’s release notes for Village & Pillage, released on Java Edition in 2019, state that trading prices depend on reputation and demand. The same notes say villagers can restock up to twice a day if they are able to work at their workstation. Those are the only official Java statements this explanation relies on for pricing, so anything beyond them should be treated as community-derived.
Demand on a single trade offer
The most common reason a price creeps up is demand on one listing. A community-maintained Minecraft Wiki discussion of trading describes demand as tracked per trade offer, not per villager as a whole. Each time you use an offer, the demand adjustment for that offer is updated when the villager restocks. In practice, the offer you use most is the one most likely to get more expensive. The other offers from the same villager may keep their original price. Source: Minecraft Wiki contributors, “Talk:Trading”, a secondary account of Java mechanics.
This means “my villager increased its prices” often describes one frequently used item, not a blanket increase across the whole trade list.

Why you may not see the change at every restock
The same wiki discussion explains that the demand calculation is rounded and the resulting price is capped. Because the displayed price is a whole number, a small demand adjustment may not change it at a given restock. The change can build up and then appear later as a visible increase. A price that stays flat after one restock does not rule out demand as the cause.
Player reputation in Java Edition
Reputation is the other factor Mojang names for Java trade pricing. The official notes confirm that reputation affects prices but do not, in the passage this explanation relies on, list every action that changes it. If you suspect a specific behavior, such as harming villagers, check a source written for your exact edition and version before drawing a conclusion.

Checks to run in your world
- Confirm your edition and version. Note whether you play Java or Bedrock and which game version is installed. Every fix below depends on this.
- Compare the changed offer with the villager’s other offers. If only one trade went up, that pattern fits per-offer demand in Java.
- Check the villager’s workstation. In Java, restocking depends on the villager being able to work at its workstation. A villager that cannot reach its job site will not restock, so its prices will not update through restocks.
- Wait through a restock before judging. Rounding and caps can hide a small change, so compare the price after the next restock rather than immediately after a trade.
- Look for experimental features or custom content. Trade settings in experimental features or in custom packs or data modifications can change prices. Mojang’s Bedrock 1.20.30 notes label certain trade changes as experimental (see the table below).

| Documented price factors | Reputation and demand, per Mojang’s 2019 Village & Pillage notes | Not stated in the cited official notes. | Repeated zombie-villager curing | Not addressed in the cited sources | Mojang’s 1.20.30 notes (2023) say repeated curing no longer increases the discount |

Do not try to lower a price by repeatedly curing the same zombie villager to stack discounts. Mojang’s 1.20.30 notes for Bedrock state that the discount no longer increases with repeated curing. Older guides that describe this as a reliable method predate that change.

No general fix guarantees a lower price. If the increase is caused by demand on one offer, the practical options are to use a different villager or item, or to accept the price until the demand adjustment changes over time.
