If Minecraft Bedrock says “Multiplayer is disabled” or that you cannot play online because of your Microsoft account setup, check account privacy and family permissions first. Other common causes include mismatched game versions, a host’s world settings, a missing console online subscription, or a connection or service problem. Start with the exact error, then work through the checks below.
Start with the error message
An account-setup warning such as “You cannot play online multiplayer because of how your Microsoft account is setup” points first to Microsoft/Xbox privacy permissions—not necessarily a problem with your internet. A general failure to join can also result from version differences, the host’s settings or availability, console requirements, or network conditions. Minecraft’s multiplayer troubleshooting guide and multiplayer requirements cover these checks.

Check Microsoft and Xbox privacy permissions
If the message refers to multiplayer being disabled or your account setup, review the privacy settings for the Microsoft account signed in to Minecraft. For a child account, the adult family organizer must make the change; the child cannot change these controls independently.
- Ask the parent or family organizer to open the child’s Microsoft/Xbox privacy settings.
- Allow You can join multiplayer games. If the player also needs to create or join clubs, allow You can create and join clubs as well.
- Return to Minecraft and try multiplayer again.
Minecraft’s parental-controls guide explains the relevant child-account permissions. Its child-account multiplayer error guide specifically addresses the account-setup warning.

Make sure both players have compatible Bedrock versions
Both players must use Bedrock Edition to join a Bedrock world, Realm, server, or LAN game. Update Minecraft on both devices to the latest release. If one player is on an older release—or using a preview or snapshot build—the versions may not match and joining can fail. Minecraft’s multiplayer requirements recommend keeping both copies current; a fixed version number is not useful because releases change.
Check the host’s world and availability
For a friend-hosted world, the host must enable multiplayer in that world’s settings and be online while guests join. A Realm works differently: its owner does not need to be online for invited players to play. Switching to a Realm does not bypass account permissions, version compatibility, console subscription requirements, or network problems.

Verify the console’s online-play requirement
Online console multiplayer may require the platform’s applicable subscription. Minecraft’s current multiplayer guidance names these services:
| Console | Online-play subscription named by Minecraft |
|---|---|
| Xbox | Xbox Game Pass Core |
| PlayStation | PlayStation Plus |
| Nintendo Switch | Nintendo Switch Online |
Check the current platform terms and availability for your region. This requirement applies to online play from the relevant console; it does not fix a privacy restriction or every connection failure. See Minecraft’s requirements page for its platform guidance.

Check the connection and service status
A working browser or other internet app does not prove that Minecraft’s multiplayer connection is working. Confirm that the device has a stable internet connection—or that players using LAN are on the appropriate local network—and check whether the host is online. If the problem involves a Realm or online service, check the relevant Realm/PlayFab or Xbox Live status. Minecraft also notes that custom DNS or port configurations can interfere with multiplayer; if ordinary internet access works but Minecraft does not, review any network changes of that kind. The official troubleshooting guide includes connection and service checks.
On Windows, confirm the signed-in gamertag
If Minecraft is using a different Microsoft account than the one you intended, multiplayer access may not match the account settings you checked. Look at the gamertag in the Xbox app, correct the sign-in if needed, and restart Minecraft. Minecraft’s Microsoft account guidance covers account sign-in and multiplayer privacy.
Quick Recap
Use this order if you still cannot join
- Write down the exact error and note the platform and whether you are joining a friend’s world, a Realm, a server, or LAN.
- If the error mentions account setup or disabled multiplayer, have the family organizer check the account’s multiplayer permission.
- Confirm both players are on Bedrock and have updated to the latest release.
- For a friend-hosted world, ask the host to enable multiplayer and remain online; for a Realm, check its availability instead.
- If playing on console, verify the applicable online subscription is active.
- Check the network and relevant service status. On Windows, also verify the intended gamertag is signed in and restart Minecraft after correcting it.
