City Car Driving can crash at startup, after the main menu, while loading Free Drive, or during a drive. There is no single confirmed cause or guaranteed fix: the useful first distinction is whether only the game closes or the whole PC freezes or restarts. Then narrow the cause by checking graphics compatibility, mods, drivers and connected devices, and background software.
Start by identifying what crashes and when
Note the last point you reach before the failure: before a game window appears, after the menu, while loading a mode, or during play. Also record whether Windows remains usable, the game closes to desktop, or the computer itself freezes or restarts. CCD Team said in an April 8, 2025 Steam Community response that “A full PC crash may indicate a hardware/driver conflict.” That makes a system-wide failure a different diagnostic problem from a game-only crash.

Before changing settings, note whether you use a laptop, mods, VR, a steering wheel or controller, and overlay, RGB, or monitoring software. Those details help identify which checks apply.
Try these eight checks in order
1. Compare your PC with the game’s listed requirements
Steam’s City Car Driving listing, observed October 8, 2026, gives these requirements:

These are the game’s published requirements, not a guarantee that a computer meeting them will be crash-free. The listing warns that correct operation on laptops and computers with integrated video cards is not guaranteed. It also lists older Windows versions, but Steam says its client has supported Windows 10 and later since January 1, 2024; the old minimum OS entries should not be read as confirmation of practical compatibility with today’s Steam client. 2. Make sure the game uses the discrete GPU, if your PC has one
If your laptop or desktop has both integrated and discrete graphics, check that City Car Driving is assigned to the discrete GPU in your graphics settings. CCD Team’s February 1, 2024 developer response advises selecting the discrete GPU where available, while noting that laptops and integrated-video systems are not officially supported. This is a configuration check, not proof that changing GPU selection will resolve the crash. Do not buy a graphics card based on this symptom alone. Read the developer’s compatibility response.

3. Remove mods and verify the Steam files
If the crash began after adding or changing mods, remove or unsubscribe from them and test the game without modifications. Then use Steam’s file integrity check: open your Steam Library, right-click City Car Driving, choose Properties, open Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files. CCD Team’s April 8, 2025 advice pairs removing mods with temporarily disabling Steam Cloud before verifying. If you do that, remember to restore your preferred Cloud setting after the check.
Steam may reacquire missing or altered game files. If the clean, verified game still crashes, note whether the failure changes before trying other branches. See the 2025 developer response.
4. Check the installation folder name
CCD Team’s 2025 troubleshooting advice says the installation path should contain Latin characters, and gives D:GamesCity Car Driving as an example. If your path uses other character sets, consider moving or reinstalling the game to a simple path like that example, then test again.
5. Check relevant drivers and device connections
For a game-only crash, check the graphics driver. If you use a steering wheel, controller, or VR headset, also check the relevant device drivers and confirm connections and power. Disconnecting optional peripherals for one test can help determine whether the crash depends on a connected device. An older developer response also mentions sound-card drivers. Change one variable at a time so you can tell whether it affects the failure. See the developer’s earlier support advice.

6. Temporarily isolate overlays, background apps, and overclocking
Close unnecessary background programs and temporarily disable the Discord overlay. RGB-control and hardware-monitoring tools are among the kinds of background software CCD Team advises checking. If the PC itself crashes, temporarily return CPU or GPU settings to stock rather than testing with an overclock enabled. The developer also suggests lowering graphics settings in NVIDIA Control Panel for full-PC crashes. Treat that as a diagnostic change, not a guaranteed fix, and restore settings if it makes no difference.
7. Repair bundled runtimes or reset configuration only when indicated
If the game reports a missing runtime or a related error, an older developer response recommends running the bundled DirectX and Visual C++ installers found in the game’s _CommonRedist folder (or Steamworks Shared), then checking the Steam files. The same support guidance mentions Steam Cloud and configuration issues.

Do not delete the Forward Development folder casually: configuration or profile data may be affected. Back up user data first and follow the game’s current support instructions before resetting configuration or reinstalling. Read the earlier developer instructions.
8. Save diagnostics and contact support if it persists
If none of the applicable checks changes the problem, collect useful details before contacting technical support:
- A screenshot of any error message.
- A DxDiag report saved after the crash.
- Whether mods are installed and what devices were connected.
- When the crash occurs and whether Windows itself freezes or restarts.

These are diagnostic clues, not formal error categories or proof of a particular cause. The developer responses cited above date from 2019, 2024, and 2025; current game updates or support procedures may supersede older instructions.
