For the highest reported daily output from one Large Solar Panel in Rust, face it north and leave its sun-facing side unobstructed. That direction comes from RustLite’s in-game tests, not an official Facepunch recommendation: Facepunch says panel output depends on sunlight intensity and angle but does not specify a compass direction.
Which direction produces the most power?
RustLite reports that a north-facing panel stored the most energy in its test of the four cardinal directions. Its measurements were taken over an 80-minute in-game day on a server running the current Rust version at the time of testing. The page does not identify a specific game build or provide independent replication, so treat the numbers as reported test results rather than a guarantee for every server or future update.

RustLite says it tracked panels facing north, east, south and west through each hour of the in-game day. Its observations describe the sun rising in the east at about 8:00, setting in the west around 19:00, and reaching its highest point on the northern side around 13:00. How to place a panel for useful output
- Orient the panel north if your priority is the highest daily total reported in RustLite’s directional test.
- Keep the panel’s sun-facing side clear of structures or other obstructions. RustLite says the panel produces while the sun is on its face.
- Check its output during daylight. Facepunch’s Large Solar Panel item entry says output depends on sunlight intensity and the angle of the sun to the panel.
If you value supply spread across more of the day over the highest single-panel daily total, RustLite says an east-west pair can provide at least 20 rW between them for much of the day. That is the publisher’s configuration advice, not a Facepunch guarantee.

What power figure should you expect?
The current Facepunch item entry lists the Large Solar Panel’s production as 20 rW. A separate Facepunch Studios announcement from 2018 described a maximum of 30 energy when the sun was directly in front of the panel and unobstructed. Facepunch has not explained the difference between those figures in the cited sources, so the 2018 maximum should not be treated as the current item specification. The announcement’s wording was: “Solar Panel Outputs 30 energy maximally, when the sun is directly infront of it with no occlusion”. See the 2018 electricity announcement.

- Check the orientation against the sun’s path. RustLite’s results favor north for its measured daily total, but a later game update or different server configuration may change what you observe.
