If those steps do not fit or resolve the problem, follow Riot’s installation guidance or contact Player Support.
Identify the update problem
Note the exact error text and where the update stops before changing settings. These symptoms point to different Riot instructions:
- Stuck at 0% Download: Riot’s focused guidance discusses a possible clash with antivirus software, specifically Avast or AVG.
- Background patch not installing: Check the Riot Client’s background-patching settings and available disk space.
- Installation or update failure outside those cases: Use Riot’s general installation troubleshooting steps.
- Update button returns or the error does not match these cases: Check Riot’s support resources rather than assuming antivirus or storage is the cause.
Riot’s article “Cannot update and launch VALORANT”, dated May 29, 2026, is specifically about VALORANT stuck at 0% Download; it does not establish a universal cause for every update failure.
If the download is stuck at 0%
Riot says antivirus software may clash with a patch. Its published temporary workaround is for players using Avast or AVG only: enable Passive Mode, update VALORANT, then turn Passive Mode off. Riot cautions that doing this is “at your own risk!” Treat it as a temporary troubleshooting step, not a setting to leave enabled.

- Open the settings for Avast or AVG and locate its Passive Mode option. The exact menu labels can vary by software version.
- Enable Passive Mode temporarily, following the antivirus provider’s instructions.
- Try updating VALORANT.
- After the update attempt, return to the antivirus settings and disable Passive Mode.
Do not disable every security protection as a general fix. If you use another antivirus product, Riot advises contacting Player Support rather than applying the Avast/AVG-specific workaround to it.
If a background patch is not installing
Confirm the Riot Client is running and auto-update is enabled
Background patching requires the Riot Client to be running; it may be minimized. In the client, open your profile icon, choose Settings, select VALORANT, and check the game’s auto-update checkbox. Riot’s Background Patching guidance explains the client setting and background behavior.

Check free disk space if the patcher reports an error
Riot says the patcher displays an error when there is not enough disk space for a background patch. Free space on the relevant drive, then either wait for the next automatic background-patch cycle or press the patch button manually. Riot describes the next cycle as occurring in about 60 minutes; this is an approximate product behavior, not a guaranteed countdown. The disk-space guidance applies to background-patching errors, not every update problem.
If the update or installation still fails
For failures not resolved by the symptom-specific checks, Riot’s VALORANT installation troubleshooting recommends redownloading and reinstalling the installer. If that does not help, its guidance includes cleanly reinstalling VALORANT, Riot Vanguard, and Riot Client, then restarting the computer.

Riot’s additional troubleshooting steps include running the installer as administrator, configuring a firewall exception, checking for Windows updates, and updating graphics drivers. Apply steps relevant to your situation, and follow Riot’s instructions for the particular failure rather than making unrelated system changes.

If the error persists, does not match the cases above, or the recommended steps fail, visit the VALORANT Player Support hub. It offers technical guides, network troubleshooting, log-gathering guidance, Vanguard help, and ticket submission. Include the exact error text and a concise list of the steps you have already tried.
