On an Xbox-style controller, LT stands for Left Trigger. It sits on the upper rear edge of the left side, directly behind the left bumper (LB). It is a pull-style trigger, not a button you press flat. On a PlayStation controller, the matching control is labeled L2.
Finding LT on an Xbox-style controller
Hold the controller in its normal playing position with both hands on the grips. Your left index finger rests on the controller’s top edge. LT is the first control your finger reaches on the left shoulder, placed behind LB. Pull it toward you to engage it. Many games use it for aiming, braking, or other actions that need a variable amount of input, because the trigger registers how far it is pulled.
LT versus LB
Players often mix up the two because they sit together on the same shoulder. The difference is mechanical:
- LB (Left Bumper) is a short, pressed button on the front of the shoulder, closer to the middle of the controller.
- LT (Left Trigger) is the pull trigger behind it, on the rear edge.
If an on-screen prompt says “LB” and you pull the trigger, or it says “LT” and you press the bumper, you will get the wrong action. Check the label in the game’s prompt rather than assuming one input performs the other’s job.

The PlayStation equivalent: L2
PlayStation uses different names for the same layout. The table below lists the corresponding left-side controls.
| Naming convention | Left bumper / shoulder button | Left trigger |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox-style | LB | LT |
| PlayStation (DualSense) | L1 | L2 |
Sony’s DualSense Wireless Controller Instruction Manual (2020) labels the top-side triggers R1, R2, L1, and L2, and its callouts identify L2 as the left trigger.DualSense Wireless Controller Instruction Manual PlayStation’s official blog also describes L2 and R2 as trigger buttons, using drawing a bow as an example. In a March 2021 post on the PS VR2 controller, PlayStation wrote: “If you’ve played a PS5 game, you’ll be familiar with the tension in the L2 or R2 buttons when you press them, such as when you’re drawing your bow to fire an arrow.” That is an illustration of how the triggers feel in some games, not a rule that applies to every title.PlayStation Blog, “Next-gen VR on PS5: the new controller” (March 18, 2021)

The DualSense Edge model adds L2 and R2 stop sliders, which limit how far each trigger can travel. Sony’s current support page documents this feature.PlayStation Controllers Support
What LT does in a game
The physical location of LT is fixed, but the action it performs is not. A game assigns LT to a function, and the player can often change it in the controls menu. Use the on-screen prompt as the final reference, since it shows the mapping the game is actually using. If you have changed controller settings, or a remapping app or accessory is in use, the prompt will reflect those changes rather than the default layout.

If your controller looks different
Third-party controllers, retro-style pads, and older models do not always follow the Xbox or PlayStation layout. Look for printed labels on the shoulder, or consult the manual for that specific model. Do not rely on a general layout diagram for a controller brand you have not verified. The descriptions above apply to the standard Xbox-style and PlayStation DualSense layouts.
