Marc Guggenheim has shared concept art and story details from an earlier, canceled Green Lantern television project, pitched under the title Emerald Knights. Reports describe a cosmic, two-era adventure centered on Alan Scott in 1941 and Guy Gardner in 1984. The later HBO series Lanterns shares some broad elements, but it is a separate production with a different reported focus.
What was the canceled Green Lantern show?
The project was an earlier Green Lantern series developed before the later Lanterns. TVLine reported that Guggenheim shared concept art and details on Substack, and quoted him describing its premise: “Our original took place in two time periods and had the Manhunters as the primary villains and my original title pitch was ‘Emerald Knights.’” TVLine

Reporting places the story in 1941 and 1984, with Alan Scott and Guy Gardner as its central Lanterns. Jeremy Irvine was attached to play Scott and Finn Wittrock to play Gardner, according to GamesRadar+. These were reported attachments for the earlier project, not casting for Lanterns.
What did the concept art reportedly show?
TVLine described art depicting Lanterns fighting aliens in space with green construct weapons, alongside an early costume design for Gardner. GamesRadar+ also reported a space battle and costume concepts for Gardner and Bree Jarta. The Gardner design was reportedly expected to move toward his Justice League International look.

Bree Jarta’s reported role
GamesRadar+ described Bree Jarta as a half-alien, half-human Green Lantern focused on the 1980s storyline. It reported that one Lantern design drew on Janelle Monáe’s likeness, but said the production had not found an actor for Bree. The resemblance in the art should not be read as evidence that Monáe was cast.
How is the earlier project similar to HBO’s Lanterns?
The overlap reported in coverage is real but broad: both projects involve Green Lanterns, a multi-period structure, and the Manhunters. The difference is in the apparent scale and emphasis. The canceled concept was described as a cosmic ensemble adventure, while Lanterns is reported as an Earth-focused story featuring Hal Jordan and John Stewart.

Coverage connects the project’s redevelopment to the broader DC Studios transition and the arrival of James Gunn and Peter Safran. The reports cited here do not establish an official, single explanation from HBO or DC for why the earlier project was canceled, so that leadership change should not be treated as a definitive cause.
