Former BioWare lead Mark Darrah says EA’s expectation that the studio release a game each year contributed to development problems behind Dragon Age: The Veilguard. His explanation, reported by GamesRadar+, also points to senior leadership being pulled onto Anthem and a schedule that repeatedly shifted in small increments. It is Darrah’s assessment, not proof that annual releases were the sole reason for the game’s commercial performance.
What Mark Darrah said about The Veilguard’s development
GamesRadar+ reports that Darrah linked the game’s troubled development to BioWare working under a yearly-release expectation. The outlet describes a demanding cadence for large role-playing games: EA wanted BioWare to publish something every year, while the studio’s planned slate included major entries from both Dragon Age and Mass Effect.
Darrah also described a leadership gap during a critical stretch. Speaking about his time assigned to Anthem, he said: “The project ran without its most senior leadership when I was on Anthem, from 2017 until 2019,” as quoted by GamesRadar+.
How the release schedule reportedly tightened
The report says BioWare’s intended sequence began in 2013 with Dragon Age: Inquisition, followed by Mass Effect: Andromeda, Anthem, and then Dragon Age 4. Delays disrupted that plan and had a domino effect. In Darrah’s account as reported by GamesRadar+, the team also faced repeated release-date changes in small increments, leaving it close to what it perceived as the release date and with limited room to rethink the project.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard ultimately arrived in late 2024. The gap between the original yearly cadence and that release helps explain the scheduling pressure described in the report, but does not by itself establish which decisions caused the outcome.

GamesRadar+ characterizes the response to the game as muted and refers to commercial failure, but the article text reviewed does not provide an attributable sales figure. It also does not establish that EA’s annualization approach alone caused underperformance. Darrah’s comments offer one former lead’s explanation of development conditions, including leadership availability and deadline changes; they are not a definitive finding from EA or BioWare.
