What’s actually slowing this PC down?

There is no documented, supported way to show PC game video on the screen of a 2008 Nintendo DSi. Nintendo’s hardware listing includes no video input, and the PC connection Nintendo does document runs in the opposite direction or carries internet access, not a game picture. The one unofficial PC project that links the two devices sends the DSi’s button and touchscreen input to the PC.
What the DSi’s listed hardware can accept
Nintendo’s DSi specifications page lists the connectors and display for the handheld. Nothing on that list accepts a video signal from another device.

The PC connection Nintendo documents
The only PC-to-DSi link in Nintendo’s official material is the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector. The DSi operations manual describes it as a way for a PC to act as an internet access point for the DSi, so the DSi can get online through the computer’s connection. That is a network function. The manual does not describe the PC sending a live picture to the handheld.

The DSi Browser, which Nintendo introduced in 2008, is also a network application. In an excerpt of Nintendo President Satoru Iwata’s presentation, as reproduced by Nintendo UK, the company said:
“The DSi Browser is an Internet browser, co-developed by Opera and Nintendo and comprehensively tuned exclusively for Nintendo DSi.”

- The DS Lite system is a region free device, it can plays all Nintendo DS Lite games and Gameboy Advance Games
That sentence defines the browser’s purpose. It says nothing about streaming or displaying another computer’s output.
What the unofficial DSi2Key project does
DSi2Key is an unofficial project whose public repository describes three things: sending DSi key signals to a PC, emulating a PC gamepad, and using the DSi’s touchscreen to control the PC’s mouse. In each case the DSi is the controller and the PC is the machine being controlled. The project does not describe showing PC video on the handheld.

Which direction each connection runs
| Direction | Source | What is documented | PC game video on the DSi screen? |
|---|---|---|---|
| DSi controls the PC | DSi2Key repository | DSi key signals, gamepad emulation, touchscreen mouse control | No; this is input only |
| PC gives the DSi internet access | Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector, DSi manual | PC acts as an internet access point for the DSi | No; this is a network connection |
| PC sends video to the DSi | Nintendo specifications and manual | No video input listed or described | No documented supported method |
What a custom attempt would have to prove
Because no supported method is documented, any homemade or modified setup that claims to show PC games on a DSi should be judged against the following points. None of these values is established by the sources available for this topic, so any claimed result should be treated as unverified until someone publishes it.
- Whether live PC video is actually rendered on the DSi screen, as opposed to input being sent back to the PC or a still image being displayed.
- The supported display resolution and frame rate.
- The input-to-picture latency.
- The connection requirements, including what hardware is needed on each side and how the link is secured.
- How game controls are mapped between the DSi and the PC.
- Whether the method runs on the original 2008 model, or only on a modified or later unit.
Online services are not a workaround
Nintendo has said that online features of Nintendo DS and DSi software that used Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection were discontinued on May 20, 2014. Those services cannot be used as a route for PC video, and the DSi should not be treated as having a current online service for this purpose.

Scope of this answer
This answer rests on Nintendo’s official DSi specifications, the DSi operations manual, Nintendo’s 2008 browser announcement, Nintendo’s statement on discontinued online services, and one public DSi-to-PC input project. It does not survey every homebrew experiment or hardware modification. The accurate conclusion is therefore that no documented, supported method exists, not that a custom build could never be made.
Quick Recap
What to do instead
- To play DS or DSi software, use the DSi itself with a DS game card or DSi-compatible software.
- To use the DSi as a controller for a PC, DSi2Key is the only public project found that does this, and it works in the input direction only.
- To play PC games on a separate screen, you need hardware with a documented video input. The DSi does not provide one.
