Some of The Legend of Zelda’s most unsettling moments are tucked away from the main quest: a cursed family, a ranch under attack by silent figures, or a ghost that wants to go home. These nine side quests and stories are Polygon’s subjective picks for Zelda’s scariest detours—not an objective ranking, and not a claim that they outdo every horror game. Their appeal is the contrast: familiar bright worlds, suddenly made strange.
What makes these Zelda side quests unsettling?
The scares here take different forms. Some involve bodily transformation or a family curse; others make Link protect someone from an unseen threat, confront a ghost, or enter a place that feels wrong before anything attacks. The player’s response changes too: lift a curse, defend a ranch, carry out a request, or simply face an uncanny setting. The list includes two entries from Ocarina of Time, two from Majora’s Mask, and one each from The Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword, Link’s Awakening, and Tears of the Kingdom.

Ocarina of Time: a cursed family and a missing adult
House of Skulltula
Inside the House of Skulltula, Link encounters a family cursed into spider-like forms. The cure is tied to collecting all 100 Gold Skulltulas. The disturbing image is not merely the spiders: it is a family still waiting in its home, transformed and unable to escape the curse.
The Craftsman’s Son
An adult craftsman’s son disappears into the Lost Woods. A Kokiri girl explains the fate of adults who get lost there: they become Stalfos. Her cheerful delivery makes the implication especially grim. The story leaves Link—and the player—to connect a missing person with the monsters inhabiting the forest.

Majora’s Mask: a ranch under siege and a father changing
“Them” at Romani Ranch
Romani asks Link to help defend the ranch against silent figures that come for the cows. If he fails, she is taken; when she returns, she has lost her memories and no longer seems like herself. The reward for protecting the ranch is milk, an ordinary prize that feels jarringly small beside what is at stake. That contrast suits a game Nintendo describes as a race to stop the moon from destroying the world in three days, using “time-twisting tunes and magical masks.” Nintendo’s October 16, 2024 overview lists Majora’s Mask in the Nintendo 64 collection for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members; catalog availability may vary by country.
Pamela’s Father
Pamela tries to keep her father hidden in a closet while he transforms into a Gibdo. The reveal turns a familiar household space into a place of fear, and the danger is personal: a child is trying to protect a parent from a curse. Link can use the Song of Healing to break it, which leads to the Gibdo Mask.
The Wind Waker: a ship that appears after dark
The Ghost Ship
The Ghost Ship appears at night in particular locations across the Great Sea. Its spectral look and music establish the mood before Link boards; inside, he can find a Triforce Shard. The unease comes from encountering a vessel that seems to belong to another world, drifting into view only under specific conditions.

Twilight Princess: a bargain with the Poes
Jovani
Jovani traded his soul to Poes in exchange for wealth, and the bargain left him turned to gold along with his cat. Link can help by finding 60 Poes. The story makes greed visible as a curse: Jovani has the treasure he wanted, but he and his companion have become part of it. Nintendo’s Twilight Princess HD page identifies the Wii U edition and lists searching for hidden Poes among the game’s side activities.

Skyward Sword: a request from the bathroom
Phoeni, the Ghost Hand
At the Knight Academy, a hand reaches from a bathroom and asks Link for paper. The encounter can lead to a love-letter choice and an unsettling complication involving Cawlin. Its scare begins with an everyday errand—bringing someone paper—and the sight of a hand emerging from a place where nobody expects a visitor.
Link’s Awakening: a ghost’s last request
The Lost Ghost
A pink ghost follows Link and asks to visit its old house and grave. Once Link carries out the request, the ghost leaves a Fairy Bottle. The bright appearance softens the scene, but the journey is still about helping a spirit return to the places it remembers.
Rank #3
- Battle hordes of enemies in the untold story of the Imprisoning War
Tears of the Kingdom: traders in the Depths
The Bargainer Statues
The Bargainer Statues are enormous figures found in the Depths, where they trade goods for Poes. Their scale and stillness make them uncanny discoveries in the dark, while the Poes’ association with spirits gives the exchange a ghostly edge. Unlike the stories built around a single frightened character, this unease comes from the place itself and the strange presence waiting there.
Where these stories sit in Zelda’s world
These examples are not all the same kind of side quest. Some are optional encounters or character stories; others are tied more closely to moving through a game’s world. Their shared effect is a shift in tone: a familiar game mechanic—collecting, defending, exploring, or delivering—takes on a darker meaning. If you want a particularly stark change of mood, Majora’s Mask also sends Link through the Ikana Well, a dungeon walkthrough for which describes encounters with Gibdos, ReDeads, and Wallmasters before the Mirror Shield reward. Zelda Dungeon’s walkthrough distinguishes Nintendo 64 and 3DS gameplay in parts of the Ikana Castle section, so version-specific details should not be assumed to match.
