Sony raised recommended prices for the PS5, PS5 Digital Edition, PS5 Pro and PlayStation Portal in 2026, citing global economic pressures. GTA VI is scheduled for November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Here are the current announced console prices, what the reported PS5 Pro resale spikes mean, and what to consider before buying.
Did GTA 6 make PlayStation prices go up?
Sony announced higher recommended retail prices for the PS5, PS5 Pro and PlayStation Portal on March 27, 2026, with the changes taking effect April 2 in the U.S., U.K., Europe and Japan. Sony attributed the increase to “continued pressures in the global economic landscape”; its announcement did not say GTA VI caused the change. Sony’s price announcement is the clearest statement of the company’s stated reason.
Some reports have described steep PS5 Pro resale prices amid stock shortages, but these are specific listings and market reports—not evidence that every PlayStation product rose in price or that GTA VI caused a general increase. On September 16, 2026, GamesRadar reported European resale prices reaching €1,400; on October 7, Tom’s Guide described a $1,400 pre-owned PS5 Pro listing at GameStop. Those figures are examples reported by the outlets, not average prices or Sony-set prices. (GamesRadar; Tom’s Guide.)
What are Sony’s announced PS5 prices?
The following are Sony’s recommended retail prices announced in 2026, effective April 2 in the listed markets. They are not a guarantee of a retailer’s current price or stock.

Is the PS5 Pro required for GTA VI?
No official source cited here establishes that GTA VI requires a PS5 Pro. The announced platforms include PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and Sony’s GTA VI announcement says the game will use PS5 features; it does not state that the Pro is necessary. Treat the Pro as an optional console comparison, not a requirement for playing the game.

If you are deciding what to buy, compare the standard PS5 and Digital Edition against the Pro at actual local prices, and consider whether you want a console with a disc drive. Also compare Xbox Series X|S, since it is an announced platform. A resale listing at an unusually high price should not be confused with Sony’s recommended price or with a GTA VI hardware requirement.

If you do not own compatible hardware and plan to play GTA VI at launch, buying a listed platform before November 19 is a straightforward option—but there is no need to pay an inflated resale price solely because of GTA VI coverage. Compare the retailer’s price with Sony’s regional recommended price, check whether the unit is new or pre-owned, and factor in the game’s separate cost. Availability and retailer pricing can change.
