The most reliable starting point is to arrange troops deliberately across the left, center, right, and reserve, then account for when regiments enter combat. Your available forces and the battle itself matter more than an imported EU4 template.
Why there is no single best EU5 army composition
Paradox describes Europa Universalis V as introducing a revised military system with greater logistical depth, not as a game with one published army recipe. The official material reviewed here does not give a universal infantry, cavalry, or artillery ratio, nor does it establish comparative results showing that one template performs best. Treat any precise ratio you encounter as a player-made recommendation unless it has been verified for your current game version and situation.
That distinction matters because EU5’s military model includes levies, mercenaries, and professional forces, with soldiers drawn from the population. What you can field and how those forces are organized can vary. The game is a PC release; Paradox announced its release date as 4 November 2025. Paradox’s announcement describes the population-linked military system.
Start by placing troops across the formation
Paradox Tinto’s official military development diary describes armies arranged across left, center, right, and reserve positions. Think about how your force occupies those areas instead of focusing only on its total headcount or a single troop ratio.

#1 Best Overall
- Left and right: Check that the wings are deliberately covered rather than leaving a side exposed.
- Center: Keep the central formation in mind when distributing troops; a collapsing flank can expose it.
- Reserve: Account for troops held back from the initial line and when they may become relevant to the fight.
This is a formation-first approach, not a claim that a particular distribution is always optimal. The official diary identifies the positions and the risk of an exposed center, but does not publish a numerical layout that wins reliably across battles.
Factor in initiative and arrival timing
The same official diary says initiative affects how quickly regiments join combat. Two armies with similar troop counts may therefore not bring all their regiments into the fight at the same time. Consider both where units are positioned and when they are likely to arrive; a layout that leaves a flank vulnerable can create problems before the rest of the army engages.
Use this as a practical decision framework, not a hidden formula: inspect your available units, their initiative, and the positions they occupy, then consider the battle you are about to fight. The official material establishes these mechanics as relevant considerations, but does not provide verified performance rankings for specific army layouts.
How to choose a template for your campaign
- Check your current forces. Identify what your nation can recruit and whether your army relies on levies, mercenaries, or professional troops.
- Review the formation. Look at the left, center, right, and reserve positions, and notice whether either flank is weak.
- Account for timing. Consider initiative and the order in which regiments are expected to join combat.
- Adapt to the battle. Use the particular force and situation in front of you rather than assuming one composition suits every encounter.
- Validate community templates in-game. If you try a suggested ratio or an unofficial army-composition tool, treat it as a hypothesis—not an official or universally tested answer—and check that it fits your current version.
Do not carry over EU4 combat-width formulas or army templates as if they were confirmed EU5 rules. The official sources cited here do not establish those formulas for EU5 or provide current-version ratio tests.

What official guidance does—and does not—establish
Paradox’s Europa Universalis V overview frames the game around a revised military system and greater logistical depth. The official military diary supports paying attention to formation positions, initiative, and exposed flanks. It does not settle a best numerical composition.
Community discussions and tools can offer ideas to try, but they are not substitutes for official mechanic documentation or verified current-version comparisons. In particular, an unofficial army optimizer should not be presented as an authoritative source for a universal template.
