The free offer many people remember was a limited Epic Games Store promotion that ended at 11:00 a.m. ET on May 21, 2020. However, if you already own GTA V on PC, GTAV Enhanced is available as a free upgrade through the account and store where you own the game.
The short answer
- New PC players: GTA V is not free. The current listed price is $29.99 in the US on both Epic and Rockstar’s stores.
- Existing PC owners: GTAV Enhanced is a free upgrade, and your entitlement should be associated with the same store account that owns GTA V.
- People who claimed the 2020 Epic promotion: the game remains in the Epic Games library linked to that claim, but the promotion cannot be claimed now.

How to get GTA 5 on PC now
Option 1: Buy it through the Epic Games Store
- Open the Grand Theft Auto V product page on Epic.
- Sign in with the Epic account you want to use for the game. Epic lists an Epic ID as required.
- Confirm that the page shows Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced, the Windows platform, and the current price.
- Select Buy Now and complete the purchase.
- Install the game from your Epic Games Library.
The Epic purchase includes GTAV Enhanced and GTAV Legacy. The product page lists the US price as $29.99.

Option 2: Buy it through the Rockstar Games Store
- Open the Rockstar Games Store purchase page.
- Choose Buy Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online.
- Select Rockstar Games Launcher as the platform.
- Choose Buy Now and complete the purchase at the displayed price.
- Install or open the Rockstar Games Launcher, sign in to the Rockstar Games account used for the purchase, and install the game.
Rockstar’s store currently lists the purchase at $29.99. It also includes both the Enhanced and Legacy PC versions.
Is there a command to claim GTA 5 for free?
No. There is no command-line command or special command syntax for claiming or installing GTA V through Epic or Rockstar. A legitimate acquisition requires either an existing entitlement on the correct account or a purchase through an official storefront.
What happened to the “GTA 5 is free” offer?
Epic gave away GTAV Premium Edition in a limited-time promotion in May 2020. Rockstar’s announcement said the game was free only until 11:00 a.m. ET on May 21, 2020. Users who claimed it during that period kept the entitlement in their Epic Games libraries after the promotion ended.
That offer is not still active. A page, video, or social-media post saying that the 2020 giveaway can still be claimed is outdated. The current Epic and Rockstar listings both show GTA V as a paid product for new customers.

Do not confuse the old giveaway with the current Enhanced upgrade. The upgrade is free only for people who already own GTA V; it is not a free standalone PC game for everyone.
Already own GTA V? Get the free Enhanced upgrade
Rockstar released the PC Enhanced upgrade on March 4, 2025. Existing owners can access the newer version without buying GTA V again through the supported PC storefront where they own the game, including the Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, and Epic Games Store.
Epic’s support documentation states that GTAV Enhanced is added automatically to existing owners’ libraries. Use the same store account that owns the original game, then check the library for the Enhanced edition rather than opening the old Legacy installation.
If Enhanced is missing from your Epic library
Epic recommends these fixes:
- Reset the library filters. A filter can hide the Enhanced edition.
- Restart the Epic Games Launcher. This can force the entitlement and library listing to refresh.
- Clear the Epic Games Launcher cache. Then restart the launcher and check the library again.
Also verify that you are signed in to the Epic account that originally purchased or claimed GTA V. Owning the game on a different Epic account, or checking an account that is only linked to Rockstar, will not necessarily display the entitlement you expect.

Enhanced and Legacy: what your purchase includes
A current PC purchase is not limited to Enhanced. Epic and Rockstar list both versions:

Existing owners can perform a one-time migration of both GTAV Story Mode progress and GTA Online characters and progression from Legacy to Enhanced. Make sure you understand which profile and progress you are moving before confirming a migration.
Buying the game does not mean you must use only Enhanced. Legacy remains included with the current purchase and may be the practical choice on a PC that does not meet Enhanced’s requirements.

Enhanced is substantially more demanding than Legacy. Epic lists the following requirements:

Rockstar lists Legacy separately with a 125 GB disk requirement and lower minimum hardware requirements than Enhanced. Check the store page for the version you intend to install before clearing space or starting the download.

Buying through a third-party PC storefront does not remove Rockstar’s account requirements. Epic requires an Epic ID, and Rockstar’s store requires a Rockstar Games account. Rockstar states that activation, online play, and periodic entitlement verification require an internet connection.

In practical terms, plan for the store launcher, Rockstar account sign-in, and online verification even if you primarily intend to play Story Mode.
Which version should you install?
- Choose Enhanced if your PC meets its requirements and you want the newer PC release.
- Choose Legacy if your system is below Enhanced’s requirements or you need the older version included with your entitlement.
- If you already own GTA V, check your library before paying again. Enhanced should be an upgrade rather than a second purchase.
- If you claimed the 2020 Epic giveaway, open the Epic library for the account used in 2020. Do not purchase the game again until you have checked that account.
