How to Fix Game Crashes After Updating to Windows 11 24H2

Windows 11 24H2 caused several documented gaming compatibility problems, but there is no universal fix. Use this symptom-based guide to identify whether the cause is Auto HDR, a game or launcher, anti-cheat, a graphics driver, overlays, Windows corruption, or unstable hardware.

Windows 11 24H2 did cause genuine compatibility problems in some games and graphics configurations, but it does not have one universal game-crash fix. Microsoft has resolved the major documented incidents involving Auto HDR, certain Ubisoft games, and a narrow Easy Anti-Cheat configuration. Current crashes should therefore be diagnosed by symptom: update Windows and the game first, then test Auto HDR, graphics drivers, game files, overlays, anti-cheat, and system stability one at a time.

First, identify what kind of crash you have

The right fix depends on whether the game alone fails or Windows itself becomes unstable. A crash to desktop usually points toward the game, its files, a mod, an overlay, or a driver. A black screen, driver reset, blue screen, reboot, or complete lock-up needs a broader system investigation.

What happens What it commonly suggests Start here
Game closes to the desktop Damaged files, game update, mod, overlay, graphics settings, or game-specific incompatibility Update and verify the game, remove mods, disable overlays, then test Auto HDR
Game freezes but Windows still responds Game thread, shader compilation, overlay, driver, or background-software conflict Wait briefly, end the game normally, then test with overlays and Auto HDR disabled
Black screen but game audio continues Graphics presentation, display mode, HDR, overlay, cable, or display-driver problem Press Win + Ctrl + Shift + B, then test borderless mode, Auto HDR off, and another driver
Windows freezes completely Display-driver hang, unstable RAM or overclock, overheating, power problem, BIOS issue, or a kernel-level driver Record the failure, check Reliability Monitor and Event Viewer, and return CPU, GPU, and RAM settings to stock
Blue screen, especially MEMORY_MANAGEMENT Driver, memory, anti-cheat, or broader hardware/system instability Record the stop code and investigate the dump, WHEA events, RAM, and anti-cheat configuration
Automatic reboot or power loss Hardware, power delivery, overheating, firmware, or a serious driver failure Check temperatures, BIOS, chipset drivers, Event Viewer, and hardware stability before blaming 24H2
Game fails before reaching its menu Launcher, anti-cheat, permissions, missing files, incompatible driver, mod, or unsupported configuration Update the launcher and game, verify files, repair anti-cheat through the game, and remove injectors

A system-wide failure is not proof that Windows 11 24H2 is broken. If unrelated games fail in the same way, the update may have exposed a marginal driver, overclock, memory module, storage device, power supply, or cooling problem.

Before changing anything, establish the timeline

“It started after updating to 24H2” can describe several different events:

  • A feature-update regression when the PC moved from Windows 11 23H2 to 24H2.
  • A monthly cumulative update installed later while the PC was already running 24H2.
  • A graphics-driver, BIOS, chipset, game, launcher, mod, or overlay update installed around the same time.
  • A coincidence caused by a game-specific bug or hardware instability.

Record these details before rolling anything back:

  • Windows edition and build: press Win + R, type winver, and press Enter.
  • The date the problem began and the date of the last successful gaming session.
  • The game title, launcher, and whether other games are affected.
  • GPU model and driver version. Run dxdiag to collect DirectX, display, sound, and driver information.
  • Whether the failure is a crash to desktop, freeze, black screen, reboot, or blue screen.
  • Whether HDR, Auto HDR, overlays, frame-generation tools, mods, injectors, overclocking, undervolting, XMP or EXPO is enabled.

Reliability Monitor is often the fastest way to compare the first crash with recent updates. Press Win + R, run perfmon /rel, and inspect the dates for game failures, hardware errors, Windows updates, and display-driver updates. For more detail, run eventvwr.msc and check Windows Logs > System, Windows Logs > Application, Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > Kernel-WHEA, display-driver reset events, BugCheck entries, and Windows Error Reporting.

What Microsoft actually documented in Windows 11 24H2

These incidents were real, but their scope was limited. They should not be treated as evidence that every game crash on 24H2 has the same cause.

Symptom Documented trigger Status Best first action
Incorrect colors or a game stops responding Auto HDR Resolved by the February 11, 2025 update, KB5051987, and later updates Update Windows and disable Auto HDR as a diagnostic test
Ubisoft game freezes, shows a black screen, or becomes unresponsive Specific Ubisoft titles during startup, loading, or gameplay Microsoft marked the incident resolved on January 23, 2025; title hotfixes were involved Update the game and Ubisoft Connect, then verify or repair the installation
MEMORY_MANAGEMENT blue screen or a full system hang when an online game launches or runs Older Easy Anti-Cheat drivers on a narrow configuration: Intel Alder Lake or newer processors using the vPro platform Microsoft removed the safeguard hold on July 24, 2025; the publisher controls anti-cheat updates Update the game and its anti-cheat component; investigate the stop code
Display disappears after upgrading to 24H2 Certain NVIDIA display drivers Microsoft used a safeguard hold while incompatible drivers were addressed Install the appropriate newer NVIDIA or computer-maker driver; do not force the upgrade with unsupported tools
Every game crashes or the whole PC hard-locks No single confirmed 24H2 cause Requires diagnosis Test drivers, overlays, clean boot, system files, firmware, temperatures, memory, and power

Microsoft’s resolved-issues record for Windows 11 24H2 contains the incident details and dates. Microsoft also published separate guidance for certain NVIDIA display adapters.

1. Install current Windows updates, but distinguish stable updates from previews

Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Install the normal available updates, restart, and test the game again. Also check Settings > Windows Update > Update history so you know which KB was installed and when.

For context, the July 14, 2026 regular cumulative update was KB5101650, producing build 26100.8875 on 24H2. The July 28, 2026 KB5101684 was an optional preview, producing build 26100.8973. Do not assume that an optional preview is the correct fix for a gaming problem; check its release notes and install it only when its risks and benefits are clear.

If you are still on 24H2 Home or Pro, plan for the support deadline of October 13, 2026. Windows 11 25H2 is the latest Windows 11 version listed by Microsoft as of this article’s status date. Moving to 25H2 may be preferable to remaining on an approaching end-of-updates release, but back up first and check the current release-health information for compatibility holds.

2. Test Auto HDR before making destructive changes

Auto HDR can cause incorrect colors or make some games stop responding. Microsoft marked that 24H2 incident resolved with KB5051987, but turning Auto HDR off remains a quick, reversible diagnostic test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System > Display > Graphics.
  3. To disable it globally, use the control under Default settings and turn Auto HDR off.
  4. To disable it only for one game, find the game under Custom settings for applications, select it, and turn Auto HDR off.
  5. Close and restart the game completely.

Auto HDR is separate from the main Windows HDR switch. Disabling Auto HDR does not necessarily disable HDR itself. A game with native HDR can continue to use its own HDR mode. Microsoft’s current instructions are in Use Auto HDR for better gaming in Windows.

If the game works only with Auto HDR disabled, leave it off for that title while checking for a game patch, graphics-driver update, or newer Windows cumulative update. Do not treat this test as a general fix for crashes unrelated to HDR.

3. Update the affected game, launcher, and anti-cheat component

Before reinstalling Windows or rolling back 24H2, update the game itself and the launcher that starts it. A game patch can resolve a compatibility issue without any Windows change.

Ubisoft games

Microsoft documented unresponsiveness or black screens in these specific titles:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
  • Assassin’s Creed Origins
  • Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
  • Star Wars Outlaws
  • Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora

The problem could occur during startup, loading, or active gameplay. Microsoft used safeguard IDs 54580160 and 54437462 while working with Ubisoft and marked the incident resolved on January 23, 2025. Star Wars Outlaws and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora were specifically associated with temporary Ubisoft hotfixes.

For one of these games, update the game and Ubisoft Connect first. Then verify or repair the installation, remove mods and DLL injectors, and test without overlays. Do not infer that every Ubisoft game is affected. If the same title still fails on a fully updated system, use Ubisoft’s support channel with the crash logs and reproduction steps.

Easy Anti-Cheat games

The documented Easy Anti-Cheat problem was narrow: Intel Alder Lake-or-newer processors on the vPro platform, combined with older Easy Anti-Cheat drivers, mostly drivers released before April 2024. The result could be a rare MEMORY_MANAGEMENT blue screen or system hang when a game launched or ran. Microsoft removed the safeguard hold on July 24, 2025, but the game publisher determines when its anti-cheat component is updated.

  1. Update the game through its normal launcher.
  2. Restart the PC.
  3. Verify the game files.
  4. If the game includes an Easy Anti-Cheat repair option, use that publisher-provided repair process.
  5. Record any stop code and inspect Reliability Monitor, Event Viewer, and crash dumps.

Do not uninstall anti-cheat indiscriminately, download an unofficial replacement, disable Secure Boot, or turn off Memory Integrity as a first-line response. Those changes can reduce system protection and are not a general fix for 24H2 game crashes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Verify or repair the game files

A Windows update can coincide with a game update, interrupted patch, changed configuration, or damaged shader/cache data. File verification is safer than reinstalling the entire game and normally preserves saved data.

Steam

  1. Restart the computer and Steam.
  2. In the Steam Library, right-click the game, or open its Library page and select the gear icon.
  3. Select Properties.
  4. Select Installed Files.
  5. Select Verify integrity of game files.

Steam may report that some files failed verification because they are local configuration files or files that are expected to differ. That message is not automatically evidence of a continuing problem. See Steam’s game-file verification guidance.

Epic Games Launcher

  1. Open Epic Games Launcher and select Library.
  2. Select the three dots beside the game.
  3. Select Manage.
  4. Select Verify.

Epic says verification repairs damaged or different files without affecting saved data. Its instructions are in Verify game files in the Epic Games Launcher.

Other launchers

Ubisoft Connect, Xbox PC, EA App, and other launchers generally provide a Verify, Repair, or Scan files command. Labels and locations change, so use the launcher’s current support instructions rather than an old menu path. If verification finds files, restart the launcher and test before adding mods or overlays back.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Update or roll back the graphics driver

A graphics-driver update can arrive close to a Windows feature update and create the impression that 24H2 caused the crash. Conversely, an older driver can be incompatible with the new Windows display stack. Use the timeline to decide whether updating or rolling back makes more sense.

Outbyte Driver Updater is an optional way to check for missing, outdated, or incompatible Windows hardware drivers, but the hardware manufacturer’s package remains the preferred source when available.

  1. Install current Windows updates first.
  2. Install the current driver from NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, or the laptop manufacturer.
  3. Restart Windows and test the game with default graphics settings.
  4. If the crash began immediately after a graphics-driver update, roll back that driver instead of repeatedly installing newer versions.

To use the built-in rollback option:

  1. Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Display adapters.
  3. Right-click the GPU and select Properties.
  4. Open the Driver tab.
  5. Select Roll Back Driver, if it is available.
  6. Restart Windows.

Microsoft recommends getting drivers through Windows Update or directly from the hardware manufacturer, not random driver-download sites. See Microsoft’s driver update and rollback guidance.

Account for the type of PC

  • Desktop with a discrete GPU: Use the appropriate NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel package and confirm that the driver matches the installed card.
  • Laptop: Prefer the laptop manufacturer’s validated graphics, chipset, and firmware drivers if a generic GPU package introduces instability.
  • Hybrid graphics: Confirm whether the game is using the discrete GPU or integrated graphics. A driver mismatch between the two adapters can affect launch and presentation.
  • Black screen with audio continuing: This often points toward graphics presentation, HDR, an overlay, display mode, cable, or driver rather than corrupted game files.

If a black screen is temporary, press Win + Ctrl + Shift + B to ask Windows to restart the graphics driver. You may hear a beep or see the display blink. This is a recovery test, not a guaranteed fix. If it restores the picture, investigate the graphics driver, HDR, fullscreen mode, overlays, and display connection.

6. Disable overlays, injectors, and monitoring tools

Overlays hook into a game’s rendering or input path. A Windows, driver, or game update can make a previously harmless overlay incompatible. Disable these temporarily, preferably one at a time:

  • Discord overlay
  • Steam overlay
  • Xbox Game Bar
  • NVIDIA or AMD overlay
  • MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner Statistics Server
  • RGB control and hardware-monitoring utilities
  • Recording and streaming software
  • Third-party antivirus game shields
  • Mod loaders and DLL injectors
  • Wallpaper or desktop-customization tools

Do not permanently remove security software or exclude an entire game folder unless you have confirmed a false positive and understand the security impact. For modded games, return to the publisher’s unmodified files before diagnosing Windows.

Use a clean boot when individual toggles are inconclusive

A clean boot starts Windows with non-Microsoft services and startup programs disabled. If the game works in that state, a background application is probably involved.

  1. Press Win + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
  2. Open the Services tab.
  3. Select Hide all Microsoft services.
  4. Select Disable all.
  5. Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager.
  6. Disable enabled nonessential startup applications.
  7. Restart and test the game.

If the crash disappears, re-enable services and startup items in batches until the conflict returns. That identifies the responsible program more reliably than leaving everything disabled. Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure, and restore normal startup after testing.

7. Reset game-specific variables before blaming Windows

If only one title crashes while other games remain stable, prioritize the game’s own environment:

  1. Install the latest title and launcher updates.
  2. Verify or repair the installation.
  3. Remove mods, ReShade, DLL injectors, custom launch arguments, and frame-generation utilities.
  4. Disable the game’s overlay integrations.
  5. Turn off Auto HDR for that game.
  6. Reset the game’s graphics configuration to its defaults, using the developer’s documented method.
  7. Try borderless or windowed mode instead of exclusive fullscreen if the failure is a black screen or display loss.
  8. Check the game developer’s support page for a title-specific patch or known issue.

Changing DirectX versions, deleting shader caches, forcing compatibility modes, disabling Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling, or using a third-party driver cleaner can occasionally be useful tests, but none is a universal 24H2 fix. Apply such changes only when the game developer or a well-supported diagnostic path recommends them, and change one variable at a time.

8. Repair Windows system components

If several games fail, Windows Update behaves abnormally, or system applications are also damaged, repair Windows before considering a reset or clean installation.

Outbyte PC Repair is an optional Windows repair and cleanup tool, but it should complement—not replace—DISM, SFC, and hardware testing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator. Search for Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator.
  2. Run the following command and allow it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. After DISM completes, run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart the PC and retest the game.

DISM repairs the Windows component store that supplies system files; SFC checks protected files against that repaired store. Do not close either tool just because progress appears to pause. Microsoft documents the sequence in its System File Checker and DISM guidance.

If Windows Update or system components remain damaged, check whether Windows offers Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now. When available, this reinstalls the same Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. Availability can vary by device and configuration; back up important files first. Microsoft describes this option in Fix problems by reinstalling the current version of Windows.

9. Investigate freezes, blue screens, and reboots as system failures

A crash to desktop is inconvenient; a hard lock, blue screen, or reboot can indicate a kernel-level driver or hardware problem. Record the exact stop code instead of treating every blue screen as an ordinary game crash. Microsoft’s unexpected restart and stop-code guidance explains that hardware, drivers, and software can all be responsible.

Check the following:

  • Reliability Monitor: Run perfmon /rel and look for Windows failures, hardware errors, and driver failures on the crash date.
  • Event Viewer: Inspect System and Application logs, BugCheck entries, Windows Error Reporting, display-driver resets, and Kernel-WHEA events.
  • WHEA errors: Repeated hardware error events deserve attention even if the game is the only workload that exposes them.
  • BIOS and chipset: Install firmware and chipset updates from the motherboard or laptop manufacturer, following its instructions.
  • Stock settings: Temporarily remove CPU and GPU overclocks, undervolts, memory tuning, XMP, and EXPO. A feature update can expose an instability that was previously hidden.
  • Temperatures and power: Check CPU/GPU temperatures, fan operation, cabling, and power-supply behavior under load.
  • Memory, storage, and GPU: Test RAM, storage health, and graphics stability with appropriate manufacturer or operating-system diagnostics.

Do not repeatedly hard-power-off the computer unless it is completely unresponsive. Forced shutdowns can lose data and complicate filesystem or update recovery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. When and how to roll back a Windows update

Uninstalling Windows should be a last-resort diagnostic step, not the first response to one game crashing. Use it when the timeline strongly connects the failure to a specific update, safer fixes have failed, and the crash is reproducible.

Remove a recent quality update

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Select Update history.
  3. Select Uninstall updates.
  4. Choose the relevant update, based on the KB and installation date.
  5. Restart and test.

If Windows will not boot:

  1. Enter the Windows Recovery Environment.
  2. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates.
  3. Select Uninstall latest quality update.

Removing a security update can remove important protections. Do not leave it uninstalled indefinitely; monitor Microsoft’s release-health page and reinstall a corrected update when one becomes available. Microsoft’s procedure is documented in How to uninstall a Windows update.

Go back from the 24H2 feature update

If the problem began specifically with the 23H2-to-24H2 upgrade, Settings > System > Recovery > Go back may be available. Microsoft’s recovery guidance says this option is generally available for about 10 days after the feature upgrade, assuming the previous installation files are still present.

Going back is more disruptive than uninstalling one quality update, and it is time-limited. Back up files first, keep recovery credentials available, and understand that returning to an older release also means returning to its support and security state. See Microsoft’s Windows recovery options.

Moving forward to 25H2 may be preferable for a supported consumer PC, but check current compatibility holds before upgrading. A clean reinstall should be reserved for persistent Windows corruption or a confirmed software installation problem—not for a single game that crashes while the rest of the system is healthy.

11. If the game still crashes, collect evidence instead of guessing

At this point, the pattern should identify the likely owner of the problem:

  • One game only: Contact the game developer or launcher support with the title version, logs, mods, and reproduction steps.
  • Several games with display resets: Contact NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, or the laptop manufacturer with dxdiag, driver version, display details, and Reliability Monitor results.
  • Blue screens, WHEA errors, reboots, or lock-ups: Investigate hardware, BIOS, chipset, memory, temperatures, and power; a qualified technician may be appropriate.
  • Windows Update or system corruption: Use Microsoft Support, DISM/SFC, or the Windows Update reinstall option.

Gather:

  • winver output or a screenshot of the Windows build
  • dxdiag report
  • msinfo32 system information
  • GPU model, driver version, BIOS version, and laptop or motherboard model
  • Reliability Monitor history
  • Event Viewer entries, stop codes, and crash dumps
  • Game and launcher logs
  • The exact reproduction sequence, including whether HDR, Auto HDR, overlays, mods, and anti-cheat are enabled

A practical order of operations

For most home users, this sequence gives the best balance of information, safety, and effort:

  1. Run winver and record the build, GPU driver, game, and crash type.
  2. Install current stable Windows, game, launcher, and anti-cheat updates.
  3. Disable Auto HDR for the affected game and restart it.
  4. Verify or repair the game files.
  5. Remove mods and disable overlays, injectors, recording tools, and monitoring utilities.
  6. Update the graphics driver; roll it back only if the crash clearly began with that driver.
  7. Reset overclocks, undervolts, XMP/EXPO, and other tuning to stock.
  8. Run DISM followed by SFC if multiple games or Windows components are affected.
  9. Use a clean boot and re-enable services in batches if the conflict remains unclear.
  10. For freezes, BSODs, and reboots, check WHEA, BugCheck, temperatures, BIOS, chipset, memory, storage, and power.
  11. Only then consider uninstalling a strongly implicated quality update or using the short feature-update rollback window.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Windows 11 24H2 break all PC games?

No. Microsoft documented several genuine compatibility problems in particular configurations and titles, including Auto HDR, certain Ubisoft games, Easy Anti-Cheat on a narrow Intel vPro configuration, and certain NVIDIA drivers. Those incidents do not explain every current game crash. The number of affected games and whether Windows itself freezes are important diagnostic clues.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I disable Secure Boot or Memory Integrity to make a game work?

Not as a generic fix. Disabling those protections can reduce security and is not Microsoft’s first-line recommendation for ordinary 24H2 game crashes. Update and repair the game and its anti-cheat component, verify files, disable overlays, and investigate the actual stop code or driver conflict first.

Is rolling back Windows better than reinstalling the game?

Usually not. If only one game crashes, update and verify that game, remove mods, disable overlays, and test Auto HDR before changing Windows. Roll back a quality update only when the timing and symptoms strongly implicate that KB; use the feature-update rollback only when the 23H2-to-24H2 transition is clearly responsible and the limited rollback period remains.

What should I do if the screen goes black but I can still hear the game?

Press Win + Ctrl + Shift + B to test whether restarting the graphics driver restores the display. Then test Auto HDR off, borderless or windowed mode, overlays disabled, a different display cable or input, and the current or previous manufacturer driver. Audio continuing usually points toward the display path rather than proving that the game files are corrupt.

The Bottom Line

The safest 24H2 fix is a diagnosis, not a blanket rollback. Update Windows and the game, test Auto HDR, verify files, isolate overlays and mods, and use the correct GPU driver. If every game crashes or the PC freezes, investigate drivers, firmware, temperatures, memory, power, and overclocking. Reserve update removal, feature rollback, and reinstalling Windows for cases where the evidence specifically points to Windows itself.
