Counter-Strike 2 is free to play and can be downloaded safely through Steam. Install Steam from the official Steam website, open the official Counter-Strike 2 Steam page—App ID 730—and select Play Game. Valve currently lists Windows 10 and SteamOS + Linux support, requires 85 GB of available storage, and does not list a native macOS version.
The base game costs nothing, but Prime Status is an optional paid upgrade. Prime is required for Premier mode and several progression features; it is not required to download CS2 or play most of its other modes.
Counter-Strike 2 download: the safe official method
There is no legitimate standalone CS2 installer that you need to download outside Steam. Steam handles the game download, installation, updates, and launch. Avoid websites offering a cracked executable, mobile APK, unofficial DMG, beta access, free Prime generator, or full version download.
On the official store listing, check that the product is Counter-Strike 2 and that Valve is shown as both developer and publisher. A third-party download button is unnecessary and adds account, malware, and counterfeit-software risks.

Is Counter-Strike 2 really free?
Yes. Counter-Strike 2 is a free-to-play game, not a paid game that merely offers a limited trial. You can install the base game through Steam without buying the game itself. However, free-to-play does not mean that every feature, progression system, or in-game item is included without optional purchases.
Valve identifies in-game purchases on the Steam page and sells an optional Prime Status Upgrade. The US Steam listing observed for this guide showed Prime at US$14.99. The price can vary by country, currency, taxes, and future Steam price changes, so treat that as a US price rather than a universal cost.
What the free version includes
Valve says non-Prime players can use all game modes and matchmaking types except Premier mode. They can therefore download and play CS2 without Prime, but they will not receive the same competitive progression and matchmaking benefits as Prime users.
How to download and install CS2 on Windows
- Go to store.steampowered.com/about and download the Steam installer.
- Run the installer and complete the Steam setup.
- Sign in to an existing Steam account or create one.
- Search the Steam Store for Counter-Strike 2, or open the official App ID 730 page.
- Click Play Game. For a free-to-play title, this begins the installation process rather than opening a paid checkout.
- Choose the Steam Library drive or folder where you want to install the game.
- Start the download and leave Steam running until it has downloaded, unpacked, and installed the files.
- When installation finishes, open Library → Counter-Strike 2 → Play.
The initial download may be followed by additional updates. Steam manages the download queue and can update installed games automatically; its Download Manager support page explains how to control downloads and update behavior.

When the installation is complete, Counter-Strike 2 should appear in your Steam Library with a Play button. Do not use a separate EXE from another site if Steam is downloading slowly or the store page is inconvenient; troubleshoot Steam instead.
Installing Counter-Strike 2 on Linux and Steam Deck
Valve’s store page lists SteamOS + Linux as a supported platform. Linux users install the same Steam title through the Steam client rather than downloading a separate Linux package from a third-party site.
- Install the official Linux version of Steam through Valve’s official Steam distribution route or your distribution’s trusted package source.
- Sign in to Steam.
- Open the Counter-Strike 2 store page and select Play Game.
- Choose a Steam Library location with at least 85 GB available.
- Let Steam download and update CS2, then launch it from the Library.
On Steam Deck, use the SteamOS interface and install Counter-Strike 2 from your existing Steam Library. It is the same Steam game, not a separate Steam Deck download. The store page lists SteamOS + Linux, but this should not be treated as a guarantee of identical performance across Steam Deck LCD, Steam Deck OLED, desktop Linux systems, and other handheld PCs. Check the current Steam store compatibility badge before relying on a specific device; this guide does not claim a current Verified status.
If CS2 will not launch on Linux or SteamOS, update the operating system and graphics drivers, confirm that Vulkan support is current, verify the installed files, and consult Steam’s general game-launch troubleshooting.
Can you download Counter-Strike 2 on Mac?
Valve’s current official CS2 requirements do not list macOS. Installing the Mac version of Steam does not create a native Mac version of Counter-Strike 2. If Steam says the game is not available on your current platform, treat that as an operating-system compatibility issue—not as a missing installer. Steam explains this situation in its platform-support guidance.
The supported choices are to use a Windows PC, a supported Linux installation, a Steam Deck, or another supported SteamOS device. Compatibility layers such as Wine, CrossOver, Whisky, or game-porting tools, as well as virtual machines and cloud gaming, are not native Valve downloads. Their compatibility can change after updates, and competitive anti-cheat behavior may differ. Use one only after checking that the current provider, operating system, and anti-cheat requirements support CS2.
Do not download a purported CS2 Mac DMG from a random website. Older Counter-Strike: Global Offensive coverage and its former Mac support are a common source of outdated advice.

These are Valve’s listed minimum requirements. They do not guarantee a particular frame rate, resolution, input latency, or competitive experience.

See the official CS2 Steam listing for the requirements currently displayed by Valve. A computer that meets only the minimum specifications may still need reduced settings or may deliver an unsuitable competitive experience. Do not interpret the minimum CPU, RAM, and graphics requirements as an FPS promise.
How much storage does CS2 need?
Plan for at least 85 GB of free space. That is the available-space requirement Valve currently lists for both Windows and SteamOS/Linux.
The 85 GB figure is not necessarily the amount of data transferred over your internet connection. Steam may download compressed files, then unpack them, apply updates, create shader data, and retain additional files. Workshop content, language files, patches, and temporary installation data can also change the final space used.
As a changing third-party observation, SteamDB reported approximately 59.23 GiB of total download data and 73.88 GiB installed in a July 2026 depot snapshot. A filter for Windows, English, and no DLC depots showed approximately 54.42 GiB downloaded and 65.25 GiB installed. These are depot measurements, not a permanent Valve specification, and they can change with any update. Leave more than 85 GB free if possible rather than trying to install with exactly the minimum.
Installing to another drive
In Steam, open Steam → Settings → Storage to select an existing library or create another Steam Library folder on a drive with enough space. Steam’s storage-management instructions also explain how to move installations.
An external drive can work in some setups, but Steam warns that installing Steam itself on an external hard drive is not recommended because of possible performance problems. An internal SSD or another reliable, fast drive is generally the safer installation location.
Do you need Prime Status?
No, Prime is not required to download CS2 or play most modes. It is required for Premier, and Premier also requires Profile Level 10.

According to Valve’s Prime Status FAQ, Prime users are matched with and against Prime users in normal matchmaking. Prime and non-Prime players can still join the same pre-made lobby, but that lobby is treated as non-Prime and plays with and against non-Prime users. A non-Prime player cannot enter a Prime-only match simply by joining a friend.

Prime can be purchased in-game or through the Steam Store. Valve says Prime cannot currently be removed after it is added, and the Steam product listing says the Prime purchase is not eligible for a refund. Check the current local Steam price before buying.

Can CS2 be played offline?
Counter-Strike 2 is primarily an online game. Official matchmaking, Premier, ratings, XP, and other online services require Steam and a network connection. Valve’s launch notes documented offline training and offline Deathmatch, although exact menus and offline behavior can change with the current build.
Steam Offline Mode must be prepared while online. Before disconnecting, let CS2 finish updating and launch it successfully at least once. Then enable or test Steam’s Offline Mode. Games or features that require an active connection will not work offline; see Steam’s Offline Mode instructions.
Fix common CS2 download and installation problems
The Play Game button does not appear
- Install and open the Steam client rather than relying only on a browser.
- Sign in to the correct Steam account.
- Open App ID 730 from inside Steam or use the official store page.
- Restart Steam if the browser does not hand the page over to the client.
- Check whether the operating system is supported.
- Confirm that you are viewing the current Valve listing rather than a regional, legacy, or unrelated result.
Do not bypass a missing button by downloading an executable from another website.
The download is slow or stuck
Open Steam → Settings → Downloads and work through these checks:
- Check the selected Download Region. A nearby region is not always the fastest, so try another appropriate region if the problem persists.
- Remove an unintended bandwidth limit.
- Pause other downloads and bandwidth-heavy applications.
- Restart Steam.
- If the download remains stuck, select Clear Download Cache.
Clearing the cache does not remove installed games, but Steam will require you to sign in again. The exact path is documented in Valve’s download-cache instructions.
Also check the units. Steam displays download speed in bytes, while internet providers generally advertise speed in bits. For example, 768 KB/s is not 768 Mbps; the former is roughly 6.1 megabits per second before accounting for unit conventions and overhead. Steam’s slow-download guidance covers regions, limits, and speed interpretation.
There is not enough disk space
Free additional space until the target drive has at least the official 85 GB available, preferably more. Use Steam → Settings → Storage to add another library location or move other games. Remember that Steam can need temporary room while unpacking and applying updates.

CS2 launches and immediately closes
Try these steps in order:
- Restart the computer.
- Install pending Windows or Linux updates.
- Update the graphics driver and, on Linux, the Vulkan driver stack.
- Close non-essential overlays, monitoring tools, and background utilities that may interfere with the game.
- Compare the computer with Valve’s official minimum requirements.
- Verify the game files from Steam.
These checks follow Valve’s general game-launch troubleshooting guidance. A minimum-specification computer can still have performance or compatibility issues even when it technically passes the requirements.
Steam reports Missing Executable or antivirus quarantine
A Missing Executable error can mean that a file is absent or has been blocked by antivirus software.

- Check the antivirus quarantine or protection history.
- If it identified a legitimate CS2 file, restore it only after confirming that the installation came from Steam.
- If you understand the security implications, add the legitimate Steam game folder as an antivirus exclusion. Do not disable protection broadly or add an unknown download.
- Restart the computer.
- In Steam Library, right-click Counter-Strike 2 and select Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files.
Valve’s instructions for Missing Executable errors and file verification cover this process. Steam may report that one or more files failed verification because local configuration files can intentionally be excluded. That result alone does not prove that the installation is damaged.

Check the operating system shown on the CS2 store page. Confirm that the computer is running 64-bit Windows or a supported Linux/SteamOS environment and that the graphics hardware has the required API and drivers. Changing the Steam download region will not add macOS support, and downloading Windows files on a Mac is not a native installation.

A free download search attracts phishing pages because users are expecting a game installer. Steam warns that fake game downloads, cheats, utilities, beta invitations, support messages, and free-content offers can be used to steal accounts or install malware.
- Use store.steampowered.com, help.steampowered.com, and steamcommunity.com for Steam-related links.
- Check the domain carefully before entering a Steam password. A lookalike domain or embedded fake login window is not Steam.
- Never download a CS2 EXE, APK, DMG, crack, cheat, or free-Prime tool to avoid Steam.
- Do not provide your Steam password to a person claiming to be Valve Support through Discord, a livestream, or a giveaway page.
- Ignore QR codes and links promising free skins, beta access, Prime, or account recovery outside official Steam pages.
- Enable Steam Guard and follow Valve’s authentication-safety guidance.
Valve’s account-security guidance is the right reference if you have already entered credentials on a suspicious site. Change the password from an official Steam page, secure the email account connected to Steam, and do not reuse the exposed password elsewhere.
What happened to Counter-Strike: Global Offensive?
Counter-Strike 2 became available as a free-to-play release on September 27, 2023, according to Valve’s launch announcement. It replaced the main CS:GO Steam experience.
Steam’s current App ID 730 page still displays August 21, 2012 in its release-date metadata because the store listing and App ID descend from the older CS:GO product. The page also explains that reviews written before September 27, 2023 referred to the CS:GO legacy version. Therefore, the 2012 date is not the CS2 launch date.
Steam automatically delivers current CS2 updates. Avoid relying on an old patch number copied from a download guide; check Valve’s official Counter-Strike 2 announcements for release notes and let Steam update the game before playing.
Account and matchmaking problems are not download problems
If a mode is locked after installation, first check whether it requires Prime or Profile Level 10. Reinstalling CS2 will not unlock Premier, award XP, restore a rating, or add a missing Prime entitlement.
Competitive cooldowns can temporarily prevent access to some modes after disconnects or other rule violations. VAC and game bans are account enforcement actions, not corrupted installation files; reinstalling the game cannot remove them. Valve states that game bans are permanent and cannot be negotiated through Steam Support. See its competitive cooldown and game-ban information.

Can I install CS2 without Steam?

Restart the computer, update Windows or Linux and the graphics drivers, close interfering overlays, compare the hardware with Valve’s requirements, and use Library → right-click Counter-Strike 2 → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. For a Missing Executable error, also check whether antivirus software quarantined a legitimate Steam file.

Bottom line: Download Counter-Strike 2 through Steam only. The base game is free, Valve lists Windows 10 and SteamOS/Linux support with 85 GB of required free space, and no native macOS version is currently listed.
