This guide reflects Activision’s support information and known-issue listings checked for August 10, 2026. Black Ops 6 is available on Windows through Steam, Battle.net, and Microsoft’s Xbox app/PC Game Pass ecosystem, so the correct fix depends partly on which launcher owns the installation. Xbox’s platform overview lists those PC options.
Use this order: check server status when the problem is online sign-in, identify your launcher, restart Windows, try the Steam administrator workaround if applicable, repair the game files, then investigate antivirus software, overlays, drivers, tuning utilities, and clean-boot conflicts.

First, identify what not launching means
Do not treat every Black Ops 6 problem as a damaged installation. Note the exact behavior and any error message before changing anything. These symptoms point toward different first checks:

Try the simple Steam administrator method
The original workaround behind this advice came from a player report published by PC Guide on October 25, 2024. That player said restarting and verifying files had not helped, but relaunching Steam as administrator did. It is worth trying when your copy is installed through Steam, but it should be understood as an anecdotal workaround rather than an official universal fix. Read the original Steam workaround report.
- Open Steam.
- Select Steam in the upper-left corner.
- Choose Exit. Do not merely click the window’s X button; Steam may continue running in the background.
- Right-click your Steam shortcut in the Start menu or on the desktop.
- Select Run as administrator and approve the Windows prompt.
- Sign in again if Steam requests it.
- Launch Black Ops 6. Depending on the installation, Steam may display it as Call of Duty in the Library.
This procedure applies to the Steam client, not to a Battle.net or Xbox-app installation. Running Steam elevated can help when permissions or another process prevent the launcher from starting the game, but it will not repair corrupted files, unsupported hardware, an account entitlement, or an Activision server outage.
If Steam still returns to Play, verify the installation
Steam’s file check can replace missing or damaged files. It may download data, so do not interrupt it or repeatedly click Play while it is working.

- Right-click Call of Duty or Black Ops 6, depending on how the installation is listed.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Restart Steam and test the game again.
These are also the general steps in Steam’s file-verification guidance. If Steam reports a missing executable, inspect your antivirus quarantine first. Steam says that security software may have quarantined a game file, or that the installation may be damaged. Restore a file only when you have confirmed it belongs to an installation made through the official launcher, then verify the files again; do not substitute a file downloaded from an unofficial site. Use the repair tool for your actual launcher
Battle.net: Scan and Repair
- Open the Battle.net desktop app.
- Select Black Ops 6.
- Select the gear icon next to Play.
- Choose Scan and Repair.
- Select Begin Scan.
- Wait for the repair to finish before launching the game.
Activision specifically recommends this procedure for Battle.net users. Blizzard’s Scan and Repair instructions provide the launcher-specific details.
If Battle.net itself is malfunctioning, Blizzard has a separate procedure for deleting corrupted Battle.net files. Keep that as a later step: it can cause the launcher to forget installed-game locations, so you may need to point Battle.net back to the existing installation afterward. Use Blizzard’s Battle.net file-cleanup guidance rather than deleting random folders.
Xbox app for Windows or Microsoft Store: Verify and Repair
- Open the Xbox app for Windows.
- Find Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.
- Select the three dots next to the Play button.
- Select Manage.
- Open the Files tab.
- Select Verify and Repair.
- Restart the Xbox app and test the game.
This is different from Steam’s verification process and Battle.net’s Scan and Repair. If the Xbox app has not finished an update, installation script, or repair, let it complete before trying to launch again.

Check updates and shader preloading
Open the launcher you use and allow every pending Black Ops 6, Call of Duty, launcher, and platform update to finish. Restart the launcher afterward. Restart Windows once after a major game, graphics-driver, or Windows update rather than repeatedly clicking Play while the update process is still settling.
Activision also warns that shader preloading is part of the first boot process. Keep the game open at the main menu and allow shader preloading to finish. Interrupting it by leaving the menu or closing the game can contribute to performance problems and may make the next launch appear abnormal. Check whether the problem is an Activision service or account issue
If the game creates a window but cannot sign in, local file repair may not help. Check the Black Ops 6 server-status page. Activision says that a platform status that is not green, or an alert shown on the page, can cause connection problems until service is restored.
A server check is particularly important for Connecting to online services, authentication failures, and problems that began suddenly for many players after an update. If the status is healthy and only your PC is affected, return to launcher repair and the local troubleshooting steps below.
Make sure the PC meets the minimum requirements
A PC can look powerful and still fail to start Black Ops 6 if it lacks a supported operating system feature, AVX support, DirectX 12 compatibility, or sufficient SSD space. Activision’s listed minimum specifications are:

Activision states that Windows 7 and Windows 8 are not supported. The storage figure was listed at launch and additional space may be required for mandatory updates; requirements can change. Check the current Black Ops 6 PC system requirements before deciding that a reinstall or hardware upgrade is necessary.
Update or troubleshoot the graphics driver
Install pending Windows updates and use the current driver supplied by your GPU manufacturer. Activision’s troubleshooting page lists the following driver versions as recommended reference versions for Black Ops 6:
- NVIDIA: 566.03
- AMD: 25.5.1
- Intel: 32.0.101.6790
These are the versions Activision lists for troubleshooting, not a claim that they are the newest drivers available in August 2026. If the game stopped launching immediately after a newer graphics-driver update, Activision says trying one of the listed recommended versions may be appropriate. Use the manufacturer’s official driver installer and follow the full guidance on its PC troubleshooting page.
As an optional diagnostic aid, Outbyte Driver Updater can check for missing or outdated Windows drivers, but use the GPU manufacturer’s official installer for the final driver choice.
Check antivirus and Windows Security without disabling protection
Security software can block a game executable, anti-cheat component, or launcher process. Start with the safest check:
- Open your antivirus or Windows Security quarantine/history and look for a recently blocked Black Ops 6 or launcher file.
- Confirm that the game was installed through Steam, Battle.net, the Xbox app, or Microsoft Store.
- If Activision’s game folder is trusted and quarantine evidence suggests a false positive, add only the entire Black Ops 6 game folder to the antivirus exclusions list as a temporary test.
- Launch the game once.
- Remove the exclusion if it does not help and restore normal protection immediately after testing.
Do not permanently turn off real-time protection just to test a game. Microsoft warns that exclusions reduce protection and recommends narrowly scoped exclusions instead of disabling all antivirus protection. Its Windows Security guidance explains the security trade-off.
Close overlays, tuning utilities, and possible anti-cheat conflicts
Activision recommends disabling software that interferes with the game, updating peripheral-control software, and turning off overclocking or tuning utilities while troubleshooting. Temporarily close or disable one category at a time, then test:
- GPU monitoring and tuning utilities
- Discord, Steam, Xbox, and other in-game overlays
- RGB and peripheral-control software
- Audio-enhancement services
- Third-party anti-cheat tools
- Controller-remapping utilities
- Capture, recording, and streaming software
- Antivirus or ransomware-protection features that block controlled folders
Community troubleshooting reports have mentioned software such as FACEIT Anti-Cheat, Riot Vanguard, reWASD, and Nahimic, but Activision’s official guidance does not establish that each named application universally conflicts with Black Ops 6. Do not immediately uninstall anti-cheat software that you need for another game. A clean-boot test is a safer way to determine whether a background service is involved.

Also return CPU, GPU, RAM, and motherboard tuning to stock settings temporarily. This includes overclocking and other stability settings such as XMP while diagnosing a crash that began after a hardware or BIOS change. If the game launches at stock settings, re-enable one setting at a time to identify the cause.
Use a Windows clean boot to isolate software conflicts
A clean boot starts Windows with only essential drivers and startup programs. Activision recommends it when Black Ops 6 still will not start, and Microsoft explains the procedure in its clean-boot instructions.
- Sign in to Windows with an administrator account.
- Search for and open
msconfig. - Open the Services tab.
- Check Hide all Microsoft services. This prevents you from disabling core Microsoft services by mistake.
- Select Disable all.
- Open the Startup tab.
- Select Open Task Manager.
- Disable each enabled startup app.
- Close Task Manager, select OK in System Configuration, and restart Windows.
- Test Black Ops 6.
If the game launches in a clean boot, one of the disabled services or startup apps is probably involved. Re-enable items in groups, restarting and testing between groups, until the conflicting program is identified.

Restore normal Windows startup afterward
A clean boot is a diagnostic state, not a permanent gaming configuration. When testing is complete:
- Open
msconfigagain. - On the General tab, select Normal startup.
- Re-enable the services and startup apps you disabled.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft warns that clean booting can temporarily remove functionality from other programs, which is why restoring normal startup matters.
Repair Windows system files only if broader problems exist
If other applications are also crashing, Windows components are reporting errors, or the issue began after corruption or an interrupted update, repair Windows itself. This is not a Black Ops 6-specific fix and should come after checking the game through its launcher.

PC Game Pass says Purchase Black Ops 6
Activision’s current United States known-issues page says that PC Game Pass users who see NOT AVAILABLE. Purchase Black Ops 6 to have access to everything. should check Microsoft Store device management and ensure they have not exceeded the Microsoft Store device limit. If the account is below the limit and the message remains, Activision directs players to support.
This is an entitlement or account-management problem. Running Steam as administrator, verifying Steam files, or downloading a DLL will not necessarily restore a PC Game Pass license. Check the current Activision known-issues page before changing the installation.

A missing discord_game_sdk.dll error
A regional Activision known-issues page dated June 15, 2026 listed an Xbox-on-PC launch problem involving discord_game_sdk.dll and included an official workaround. The newer United States page dated July 10, 2026 no longer lists that DLL issue, so the regional entry may be stale, resolved, or superseded.
If you see that exact error, open the live official known-issues page and use the workaround only if Activision still lists it. Never download discord_game_sdk.dll from a third-party DLL site. The regional listing is available here for comparison, but it should not be treated as a current universal fix.
A moved installation, multiple drives, or bootstrapper error
Some launch-period community reports discussed bootstrapper.log, installations spread across multiple drives, Steam Cloud, and anti-cheat files. If you moved the game between drives, confirm that the launcher still points to the correct library and that the installation drive is connected and has free space.
Do not manually copy kernel or anti-cheat files such as randgrid.sys, create symbolic links, edit the registry, or follow a file-moving workaround just because a community post suggests it. The reported randgrid.sys procedure is not an Activision-supported general repair and can create new anti-cheat or permissions problems. Use the launcher’s repair process and the exact official error guidance instead. The original community discussion is documented by Siliconera, but it should not outrank current Activision instructions.

Reinstalling is a last resort because it consumes time and bandwidth and may not solve an account, server, driver, or background-software problem. Consider it when:
- Steam verification or Battle.net/Xbox repair repeatedly fails.
- The launcher reports an incomplete installation that it cannot repair.
- Core files remain missing after you have dealt with antivirus quarantine.
- The installation was moved between drives and the launcher cannot recover its paths.
- The game still fails after the launcher repair, clean-boot test, driver check, and relevant error-specific fixes.
Before reinstalling, confirm the destination is an SSD with enough free space and allow the launcher to finish every update afterward. Do not reinstall Windows, download unofficial game or DLL files, or remove unrelated anti-cheat software as a first response.
