Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree explained — price, access, story, difficulty, platforms, and what the DLC adds

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree is a paid expansion, not a standalone game. It requires the base Elden Ring and adds the separate Realm of Shadow, a new story involving Miquella and Messmer, large open areas, legacy dungeons, new bosses, weapons, spells, NPC quests, and a local progression system built around Scadutree Fragments and Revered Spirit Ashes.

The expansion launched on June 21, 2024, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. As of August 10, 2026, the latest official patch note verifiable from Bandai Namco’s news index is Version 1.16.1, released August 21, 2025. It remains an excellent purchase for players who enjoyed Elden Ring, but its aggressive bosses, opaque storytelling, and uneven performance mean it is not equally suited to everyone.

What is Shadow of the Erdtree?

Shadow of the Erdtree is FromSoftware’s major paid expansion for Elden Ring. The base game is required: the DLC has its own store page and a substantial independent campaign, but it cannot be launched as a separate game.

The expansion takes place primarily in the Realm of Shadow, also called the Land of Shadow. It introduces a new story, areas, enemies, boss encounters, equipment, weapon skills, Ashes of War, sorceries, incantations, Spirit Ashes, talismans, crafting materials, and NPC questlines. The official product descriptions from PlayStation and Bandai Namco describe it as an all-new story expansion rather than a small side chapter.

Which edition should you buy?

The product names are easy to confuse. The standard expansion and Premium Bundle do not include the base game, while the Shadow of the Erdtree Edition and Deluxe Edition do.

These are listed US digital prices checked for this guide, not permanent prices. Sales, taxes, regional pricing, platform storefronts, physical-retail stock, and future bundles can change the total. The physical Collector’s Edition is different again: it contains collector items and an expansion voucher, rather than being a separate standalone game. If buying a used physical bundle, check whether the voucher has already been redeemed and whether it matches your platform and region. DLC ownership is also platform-specific in practice, so verify entitlement and generation-upgrade terms before moving from one console ecosystem to another.

Platforms, online play, and compatibility

Shadow of the Erdtree is available on:

The game supports one-to-four-player online play, while the Colosseum supports up to six players. The expansion purchase does not establish cross-platform multiplayer, so do not assume that players on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC can freely play together. How to enter the Realm of Shadow

You do not need to finish the base game or defeat the Elden Beast. There is also no documented official character-level requirement. However, the access bosses and the expansion’s difficulty make it an endgame-oriented journey.

1. Own and install both products: the base game and Shadow of the Erdtree must be installed on the same platform account.
2. Defeat Starscourge Radahn.
3. Defeat Mohg, Lord of Blood in Mohgwyn Palace.
4. Return to the cocoon arena after the required NPC appears.
5. Interact with the withered arm emerging from Miquella’s cocoon to travel to the Realm of Shadow.

The official access guide lists several ways to activate the Radahn Festival. You can progress through Ranni and Blaidd’s questlines, begin the festival through Jerren and Iji after starting Ranni’s quest, or enter the Altus Plateau and rest at any Site of Grace, which activates the festival regardless of whether those quests are complete.

Mohg, Lord of Blood can be reached through White Mask Varré’s quest and the Pureblood Knight’s Medal, through the Sending Gate in the Consecrated Snowfield, or by progressing normally through Mohgwyn Palace to the boss arena. Ranni’s entire questline and completion of the base game are not required.

If you die in the Realm of Shadow before resting at a Site of Grace, the official guide says you must return to Miquella’s cocoon to enter again. Once you have rested at a Site of Grace in the new region, fast travel becomes available between the Realm of Shadow and the Lands Between.

What is the story about?

Spoiler-free premise

The expansion follows Miquella’s trail into a land hidden from the ordinary view of the Erdtree. The Realm of Shadow is described as the place where Marika first set foot, a land purged in an unsung battle and later set ablaze by Messmer’s flame.

Miquella departed for this region after divesting himself of his flesh, strength, lineage, and “all things Golden.” The player encounters other followers pursuing him, but they do not necessarily share one simple motive. Their alliances, rivalries, and personal goals provide much of the expansion’s character-driven storytelling.

That setup makes the DLC both a new adventure and a historical excavation. It supplies context for Miquella, Messmer, Marika, and the Hornsent while adding new perspectives on characters and conflicts from the base game. It does not turn every unanswered question in Elden Ring into a single definitive explanation.

What the lore establishes versus what it suggests

Explicit: the game’s cutscenes, dialogue, item descriptions, and environmental details establish Miquella’s destination, his deliberate abandonment of parts of himself, Messmer’s role in the Realm of Shadow, Marika’s connection to the region, and the historical suffering of the Hornsent.

Strong inference: multiple clues connect the expansion’s events to the political and religious foundations of the Golden Order. The DLC also recontextualizes the roles of Miquella’s followers and adds important background to the relationships surrounding Malenia, Radahn, and Mohg.

Interpretation: the exact meaning of Miquella’s motives, the moral status of his promised future, and how every revelation should alter the base-game endings remain matters of interpretation. As with the original game, item descriptions and environmental storytelling often support more than one plausible reading. Treat lore-guide certainty with caution when it goes beyond what the game directly shows.

How large is the DLC?

The Realm of Shadow is a separate map, but it is not a small linear dungeon. It combines broad field regions, legacy dungeons, smaller dungeons, concealed routes, vertical layers, and interconnected paths that are often invisible from the first map view.

Pre-release comparisons described its surface area as comparable to or larger than Limgrave. That comparison is useful only as a rough reference. The expansion feels large because important spaces are stacked above and below one another, and because a short distance on the map can conceal a long route through cliffs, tunnels, ruins, or drops. The official spoiler-free exploration tips specifically emphasize verticality on a scale that exceeds much of the base game.

Current community guides identify five map fragments, although that count is not presented as an official publisher statistic. Finding all of them still does not reveal every playable route: the map is a terrain clue, not a complete three-dimensional model of the region.

Why the map can feel confusing

• Look for Spiritsprings and other ways to gain vertical access.
• Investigate apparent dead ends; they may conceal drops, tunnels, or branching paths.
• Revisit earlier regions after unlocking a new route or movement option.
• Search coastlines, cliffs, sealed tunnels, and ravines that appear inaccessible.
• Use elevation and landforms as clues rather than assuming every visible location is reachable directly.

Bosses, weapons, and other new content

PlayStation’s hands-on report describes more than ten full boss encounters, in addition to side bosses. That is not a universal total for every enemy encounter: the number changes depending on whether a guide counts field bosses, repeated variants, NPC fights, and minor dungeon encounters. Several bosses are required for progression, while others are optional discoveries that reward exploration.

The expansion also adds approximately 100 weapons, according to the same hands-on report. That number should be understood as an approximate count of added armaments, not as 100 entirely new weapon categories. Many additions belong to existing categories, alongside unique boss weapons and new infusable equipment.

The eight new weapon categories

These categories broaden the game’s combat vocabulary in different ways. Backhand Blades, Beast Claws, Great Katanas, Light Greatswords, and Hand-to-Hand Arts add new close-range approaches; Perfume Bottles and Throwing Blades create unusual ranged or utility options; and Thrusting Shields combine offense with a defensive posture. Their usefulness depends on the individual weapon, scaling, Ash of War, status potential, and target matchup—not simply on the category name.

Build experimentation is one of the expansion’s strongest additions. New weapons can support strength, dexterity, intelligence, faith, arcane, or hybrid builds, but not every weapon in a category suits every stat spread. Check whether an armament is infusable, which attributes it scales with, and whether its skill fits your combat plan before spending rare upgrade materials.

Scadutree Blessing and Revered Spirit Ash Blessing

The most important new progression system is the Shadow Realm Blessing. It prevents the DLC from being balanced solely around ordinary rune level: your character may be extremely powerful in the Lands Between and still need to explore the Realm of Shadow for local upgrades.

Scadutree Blessing

Scadutree Fragments increase the player’s attack power and damage negation in the Realm of Shadow. The adjusted values appear highlighted in yellow on the character Status screen. They do not provide the same benefit in the Lands Between.

Current comprehensive guides identify 50 Scadutree Fragments and 20 maximum Scadutree Blessing levels. The progression costs are:

Revered Spirit Ash Blessing

Revered Spirit Ashes improve the offensive and defensive capabilities of Spirit Ash summons and the spectral steed Torrent. Current guides identify 25 Revered Spirit Ashes and 10 maximum blessing levels. These blessings are also activated at Sites of Grace and apply only in the Realm of Shadow.

Both blessing systems can be active at the same time. They are not ordinary permanent character buffs, and their disappearance when you return to the Lands Between is expected behavior. The official explanations are available in Bandai Namco’s guides to entering the Realm of Shadow and strengthening your character.

Why launch-era difficulty reports can be misleading

Calibration Update 1.12.2 changed the Scadutree curve. It increased attack and damage-negation benefits in the first half of the progression, made the second half more gradual, and slightly increased the final level’s benefit. A review written during launch week may therefore describe a harsher early curve than the current game.

Is Shadow of the Erdtree harder than Elden Ring?

For most players, yes: it is designed for a developed Elden Ring character and contains highly aggressive bosses, punishing attack chains, difficult arenas, and unfamiliar timing. But the difficulty is not determined by rune level alone. Scadutree Blessing, Revered Spirit Ash Blessing, weapon upgrades, build quality, summons, patch version, and how much you explore all matter.

There is no official recommended entry level. Any number presented as a mandatory level is community guidance rather than a requirement. A better preparation test is whether your character has a coherent build, a strong upgraded main weapon, enough Vigor for late-game damage, and at least one backup option for different resistances or attack ranges.

Practical preparation checklist

• Bring a focused build instead of spreading attributes across several unrelated damage types.
• Upgrade at least one main weapon as far as your available materials reasonably allow.
• Make sure your Vigor and defensive setup can withstand major boss attacks.
• Carry a second damage type, weapon, spell, or status plan for poor matchups.
• Explore the first open areas and collect Scadutree Fragments before repeatedly challenging a wall-like boss.
• Use Spirit Ashes if you want to; Revered Spirit Ash Blessing makes them more effective in the expansion.
• Remember that New Game Plus adds another layer of enemy scaling and can make the opening substantially more demanding.

The final boss was also changed after launch. Version 1.14 altered its opening action pattern, adjusted several attacks, reduced damage and stamina damage from some moves, shortened the range of certain non-weapon attacks, and improved the visibility of some attack effects. Current guides should therefore identify the patch version they discuss rather than presenting launch behavior as unchanged.

Performance and PC requirements

The official Elden Ring website lists these PC requirements. The site warns that the specifications were valid at launch and may be updated.

Meeting the minimum specification does not guarantee a consistently smooth experience. Digital Foundry’s technical analysis found that frame-rate and traversal-related issues were not completely eliminated, with results varying by hardware, platform, settings, and patch. Do not assume a universal locked 60 fps on consoles or PC, and do not expect identical performance on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and different PC configurations.

Useful troubleshooting steps

• PS5 unstable frame rate: the official notes say rebuilding the database through Safe Mode may help.
• PC ray tracing unexpectedly enabled: check the ray-tracing setting, particularly after loading older save data.
• PC frame-rate instability: disable third-party mouse-control applications and verify that graphics settings suit the GPU.
• “Inappropriate activity detected”: if it appears without cheating, verifying the integrity of game files is an official suggested remedy.

The latest verified official patch note is Version 1.16.1. It addressed weapon affinity and status-application bugs and an unauthorized method of bypassing player blocks; online play requires the update. The official news index should be checked for anything newer after this article’s verification date.

Reception and sales

The expansion was received extremely well overall. Metacritic currently lists a 94 PlayStation 5 Metascore and classifies it as Universal Acclaim. Steam lists a 92 critic score and a Very Positive overall English-language user-review status; recent-review labels can fluctuate and should be treated separately from the lifetime result.

Those scores reflect the quality of the combat, exploration, art direction, bosses, and build variety, but they do not erase the technical caveats or the expansion’s demanding design. Launch-period complaints about the early blessing curve and final boss should also be read alongside the later 1.12.2 and 1.14 changes.

Who should buy it?

Buy it confidently if you liked Elden Ring’s combat and exploration, want tougher boss fights, enjoy environmental storytelling and item-description lore, like finding hidden routes without quest markers, or want a large selection of new build options.

Wait or reconsider if you want a standalone entry point, prefer clearly signposted quests, dislike opaque storytelling, found the base game’s late-game combat frustrating, do not want to collect local progression items, or require flawless technical performance. The expansion is widely praised, but it is not a replacement for the base game and it is not a low-friction action RPG.

Common problems and fixes

“I bought the DLC but cannot find it.”

1. Confirm that the base game and DLC are installed on the same platform and account.
2. Update the game and storefront client.
3. Confirm that you defeated Starscourge Radahn.
4. Confirm that you defeated Mohg, Lord of Blood, not Mohg, the Omen.
5. Return to Mohg’s cocoon arena and look for the interaction with the withered arm.
6. If it does not appear, rest at a Site of Grace, restore licenses on console, or verify installed files through Steam.

“Everything kills me after I enter.”

Collect Scadutree Fragments before forcing a major boss attempt. Also check Vigor, weapon upgrades, scaling, damage type, status effectiveness, and whether you are playing on a later New Game Plus cycle. A high ordinary rune level cannot substitute for the DLC’s local blessing system.

“My blessings disappeared.”

That is normal. Scadutree Blessing and Revered Spirit Ash Blessing apply in the Realm of Shadow, not in the Lands Between.

“A route on the map seems impossible.”

Search vertically. Look for Spiritsprings, drops, tunnels, cliff paths, coastlines, and routes that become available only after approaching the region from another direction. The map frequently hides the height difference between nearby locations.

“A final-boss guide does not match my game.”

Check the guide’s patch date. Version 1.14 changed the opening behavior, attacks, damage, stamina damage, range, and visual readability of several final-boss moves.
