A Larval Tear is the key item used to respec your character in Elden Ring. After defeating Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon, return to the Raya Lucaria Grand Library, choose Rebirth, and spend one Larval Tear to redistribute the attribute points gained through leveling. You do not use the tear directly from your inventory.
The base game has 18 Larval Tears. Shadow of the Erdtree adds 9 more, for 27 available during one complete NG cycle if you own the expansion. None of the rewards can be farmed repeatedly in the same playthrough, although the locations refresh in New Game Plus. See the item database entry and Rebirth mechanics.
What does a Larval Tear do?
A Larval Tear is the payment for Rebirth, Elden Ring’s stat-respec system. It returns the points you have assigned through leveling to the Rebirth screen, allowing you to distribute them again among the game’s eight attributes: Vigor, Mind, Endurance, Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Faith, and Arcane.
It is a key item, not a normal consumable. Selecting it in your inventory does not activate a respec. You must take it to Rennala after defeating her at the Academy of Raya Lucaria.

- It lets you convert an existing build into another build, such as changing from a Strength character to a Dexterity, Intelligence, Faith, or Arcane setup.
- It returns your level-up-distributed attribute points to the Rebirth screen for reassignment.
- It lets you meet new weapon, spell, incantation, or multiplayer-build requirements without creating a new character.
What Rebirth cannot change
- Starting origin: Vagabond, Samurai, Confessor, Wretch, and the other origins remain fixed.
- Minimum attributes: No stat can be reduced below the base value provided by your starting origin.
- Rune level: Rebirth does not lower your character’s total level or reset the character to level 1.
- Completed respecs: A Larval Tear cannot be reused after the Rebirth has been confirmed.
For cosmetic changes, you do not need a Larval Tear. Use the Clouded Mirror Stand in Roundtable Hold for free appearance editing. More on changing appearance.
How to respec with a Larval Tear
- Defeat Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon, in the Academy of Raya Lucaria.
- Return to the Raya Lucaria Grand Library, where Rennala remains after the fight.
- Speak to Rennala and select Rebirth.
- Confirm that you want to spend one Larval Tear.
- Reallocate every level-up point across Vigor, Mind, Endurance, Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Faith, and Arcane.
- Review the new allocation and confirm it.
The tear is consumed when the Rebirth is finalized. If you leave or cancel before confirming the final allocation, the Larval Tear remains in your inventory. Once the new stats are confirmed, there is no refund; the normal remedy is to use another tear for another Rebirth. See the Rebirth rules.

All 18 base-game Larval Tear locations
The base-game rewards include ordinary corpse pickups, purchases, boss rewards, and one-time drops from enemies disguised as harmless creatures or NPCs. Killing a normal enemy of the same type will not necessarily produce a tear: look for the specific disguised enemy or Silver Sphere described below. The complete location list is cross-checked against the item database, a full location walkthrough, and an item tracker.
| # | Region and route | How to obtain it | Condition or hazard |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Limgrave — east of Agheel Lake South | Attack the isolated sword-wielding Wandering Noble. It transforms into a Lesser Runebear; defeat the bear for the tear. | Available very early, but the bear can be extremely dangerous for a new character. |
| 2 | Liurnia — Village of the Albinaurics | Loot the corpse in the village graveyard near the wooden bridge and stone coffins. | One of the easiest early tears; no boss is required. |
| 3 | Liurnia — between Rose Church and Boilprawn Shack | Kill the patrolling Giant Crayfish. It transforms into a Grafted Scion that drops the tear. | Three nearby crayfish are ordinary enemies. The patrolling one is the disguised enemy you need. |
| 4 | Liurnia — graveyard east of Caria Manor | Obtain the Resurrection Painting, defeat Royal Knight Loretta, then touch the ghost sitting in a chair in the graveyard. | The painting must be acquired first, and the area behind Caria Manor must be accessible. |
| 5 | Liurnia — Pidia in Caria Manor | Purchase one from Pidia for 3,000 runes. | Reach Pidia by dropping down from the cliffs in the Three Sisters area after progressing through Caria Manor. If Pidia is dead, his Bell Bearing preserves access to the remaining inventory through the Twin Maiden Husks. |
| 6 | Caelid — south of Caelid Highway South | Attack the kneeling Wandering Noble among the stone coffins. It transforms into a Troll; defeat it. | The disguised enemy is at the western end of the coffin area. |
| 7 | Siofra River — Abandoned Merchant | Purchase one from the Abandoned Merchant near the Worshippers’ Woods area for 3,000 runes. | Reaching the merchant requires entering Siofra River and following the elevated ruin and cave route. |
| 8 | Nokron — stone building southeast of the Nokron, Eternal City Site of Grace | Loot the corpse inside the building. | The building is guarded by Fallen Hawk Soldiers. |
| 9 | Nokron — gazebo on the route toward Mimic Tear | Loot the corpse in the gazebo. | Silver Tears drop from the ceiling as you approach the corpse. |
| 10–11 | Nokron — Mimic Tear boss | Defeat the Mimic Tear boss. It rewards two Larval Tears, not one. | These are two separate items from a single boss reward, which is why the number of rewards exceeds the number of listed locations. |
| 12 | Nokron — Night’s Sacred Ground | Defeat the giant Silver Sphere inside the building. | This hostile Silver Tear gives a one-time Larval Tear drop. |
| 13 | Nokstella — first major bridge | Defeat the Silver Sphere on the bridge. | One-time drop. |
| 14 | Nokstella — building northeast, or right, after the bridge | Defeat the Silver Sphere hanging from the ceiling. | Do not kill it from an angle that leaves the item inaccessible. Lure or force it into the room before delivering the killing blow. |
| 15 | Nokstella — building after the bridge and stairs | Defeat the ceiling-hanging Silver Sphere in the building above the stairs. | Electrified Silver Tears surround it, and the reward is a one-time drop. |
| 16 | Altus Plateau — ruins southeast of Windmill Village, east of Woodfolk Ruins | Attack the cowering Wandering Noble. It transforms into a Lion Guardian; defeat it. | The ruins sit on the clifftops and are easiest to approach from the outer-wall road. |
| 17 | Mt. Gelmir — east of Road of Iniquity | Attack the burning Putrid Corpse. It transforms into Wormface; defeat it. | Wormface can inflict lethal Death Blight, making this a poor early target. |
| 18 | Consecrated Snowfield — southeast of Inner Consecrated Snowfield | Attack the half-buried Wandering Noble among two other nobles. It transforms into a Lesser Runebear; defeat it. | Requires access to the Consecrated Snowfield. |
Pidia reminder: Pidia’s Larval Tear costs 3,000 runes. If the Seluvis-related world event results in Pidia’s death, collect his Bell Bearing and give it to the Twin Maiden Husks to recover access to his remaining stock. The item tracker lists the Pidia and Bell Bearing behavior.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAll 9 Shadow of the Erdtree Larval Tear locations
Search for these only at night. The DLC tears sit in the center of blue-glowing rings of spirit gravestones and are designed to appear only during nighttime. Rest at any Site of Grace, choose Pass Time, and select Nightfall before traveling to a location. If you search during the day, the area can appear completely empty—not merely difficult to see.
These nine tears serve the same Rebirth function as the base-game tears at Rennala in the Raya Lucaria Grand Library. They have a different icon and lore presentation and may be treated as a separate Realm of Shadow variant by item databases, but they are not part of a separate DLC respec system. See a region-by-region DLC guide.
| # | Area | Approximate location and route |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Gravesite Plain / Scorched Ruins | East of the Gravesite Plain Site of Grace, near the cliff edge; this is also described as southeast of Scorched Ruins. |
| 2 | Prospect Town | Southeast of Prospect Town, on a small rise among the glowing gravestones. The approach is commonly made from Cliffroad Terminus or Main Gate Cross. |
| 3 | Suppressing Pillar | Northeast of the Suppressing Pillar landmark, reached from the Pillar Path Waypoint area. |
| 4 | Church of the Crusade | South of the Church of the Crusade. |
| 5 | Abandoned Ailing Village / Greatbridge, North | South of Abandoned Ailing Village, just east of the Greatbridge, North Site of Grace. |
| 6 | Rabbath’s Rise | West of Rabbath’s Rise. |
| 7 | Messmer’s Army Encampment | East of the encampment, among the trees and glowing gravestones. |
| 8 | Rauh Base | Southwest of the Ancient Ruins Base Site of Grace, on the cliff above the Fog Rift Catacombs area. |
| 9 | Rauh Base / Ravine North | Northwest of Ravine North Site of Grace, in the Rauh Base region. |
Can Larval Tears be farmed?
No—not within the same playthrough. The disguised Wandering Nobles, Crayfish, Putrid Corpse, and other special enemies provide one-time rewards. The Silver Spheres that drop Larval Tears may respawn as ordinary enemies, but their Larval Tear drops do not return. Resting, fast-traveling, or repeatedly killing the same enemy will not create an infinite source.
Ordinary Silver Tears are also not a farming method. Only the specifically flagged Silver Spheres and disguised enemies award the one-time Larval Tear rewards. See the NG+ and one-time-drop overview.

Trading, storage, and New Game Plus
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Can another player drop or trade a Larval Tear? | No. Larval Tears are not player-tradeable. Community item data also reports that a tear apparently picked up while assisting in another player’s world is removed when the guest returns to their own world, so multiplayer farming claims should not be relied upon. |
| Do unused tears carry into NG+? | Yes. Unused tears remain in your inventory when you begin a new cycle. |
| Do the locations return in NG+? | Yes. The world pickups and one-time enemy rewards become available again in the new cycle. The 18-tear limit applies to each base-game world cycle, not permanently to the character. |
| What is the maximum held quantity? | The item database lists a maximum held quantity of 99. Ordinary play does not come close to requiring that many because the legitimate supply is finite during each cycle. |
With the DLC installed, a full fresh cycle can provide up to 27 rewards: 18 from the base game and 9 in the Realm of Shadow. New Game Plus gives you another world supply, but it is not the same as farming a single enemy indefinitely.
Best early-game Larval Tear route
If you have just reached Liurnia and want to respec without pushing deep into the game, prioritize these targets:
- Village of the Albinaurics: Loot the graveyard corpse. This is usually the safest early option because it does not require a boss fight.
- Disguised Giant Crayfish: The patrolling crayfish between Rose Church and Boilprawn Shack transforms into a Grafted Scion. It is worthwhile if your character can handle the fight.
- Agheel Lake South: The disguised Wandering Noble is accessible in Limgrave, but the Lesser Runebear is disproportionately strong for a new character.
- Pidia: After opening the route through Caria Manor and defeating Royal Knight Loretta, buy one for 3,000 runes.
- Abandoned Merchant: Reach the merchant in Siofra River and buy another for 3,000 runes if the underground route is available.
Do not spend a tear just to correct a one- or two-point shortfall unless the change is immediately important. A few additional levels, a talisman, a Great Rune, armor, or a temporary buff may cover a requirement more efficiently. Save the tear for a major build conversion, a new weapon or spell setup, a PvP or co-op level plan, or a serious DLC weapon experiment.

Troubleshooting Larval Tear problems
Rennala does not offer Rebirth
- Confirm that Rennala’s boss fight is complete.
- Speak to her in the Raya Lucaria Grand Library, not during the boss encounter.
- Check that at least one Larval Tear is in your inventory.
- Select Rebirth, rather than using only the appearance-related options.
A Shadow of the Erdtree tear is missing
Rest at a Site of Grace, select Pass Time, and change the time to Nightfall. Then return to the approximate location and look for the blue-glowing ring of spirit gravestones. During the day, the DLC placement is absent.
A Nokstella tear seems to have disappeared
One ceiling-hanging Silver Sphere can drop its item into an inaccessible position if killed from the wrong angle. For the safest attempt, lure or force the sphere into the room before killing it. If the item has already fallen somewhere unreachable, the practical options are to recover it by reaching the drop location or obtain another tear elsewhere; killing the same sphere again will not produce a second reward.
I regret confirming my respec
There is no built-in refund after confirmation. You need another Larval Tear and another visit to Rennala. Before confirming a future allocation, cancel and leave the Rebirth screen if you are still uncertain; the tear is preserved until the respec is finalized.

Why some guides say there are only 10
Early launch-era guides sometimes reported only ten base-game Larval Tears. That was incomplete coverage, not the current total. The complete base-game count is 18, with the Mimic Tear boss contributing two rewards on its own. The nine Shadow of the Erdtree tears are additional resources and use the same Rebirth system rather than introducing a separate respec mechanic.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many Larval Tears are in Elden Ring?
There are 18 in the base game and 9 more in Shadow of the Erdtree. With the DLC, that is 27 rewards available during one complete NG cycle. New Game Plus refreshes the world supply, so 27 is not a permanent character-wide maximum.
Can I farm Larval Tears from Silver Tears?
No. The special Silver Spheres and disguised enemies provide one-time Larval Tear rewards. Their ordinary enemy versions can respawn, but the tear reward does not return in the same playthrough.
Can Larval Tears be traded to another player?
No. Larval Tears cannot be dropped or traded. Multiplayer pickup claims are unreliable, and community item data reports that a tear collected in another player’s world may be removed when the guest returns home.
Can I respec before defeating Rennala?
No. Rebirth becomes available only after defeating Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon. Afterward, speak to her in the Raya Lucaria Grand Library with a Larval Tear in your inventory.
Best Value
- Brand New in box. The product ships with all relevant accessories
Does Rebirth change my starting class or character level?
No. Rebirth redistributes level-up points, but your starting origin, its minimum attribute values, and your total rune level remain unchanged.
Does canceling Rebirth consume the Larval Tear?
No, provided you exit before the final allocation is confirmed. The tear is consumed only when the Rebirth is finalized.
Why can’t I find a Larval Tear location in the DLC?
The nine Shadow of the Erdtree tears appear only at night. Rest at a Site of Grace, choose Pass Time, select Nightfall, and search for the blue-glowing ring of spirit gravestones.
What happens if I give a Larval Tear to Boc?
Boc goes to Rennala, is reborn, and dies afterward. The tear is consumed and his tailoring services are lost for that playthrough. Use the You’re Beautiful Prattling Pate near Boc if you want to keep him alive.
Do unused Larval Tears carry into New Game Plus?
Yes. Unused tears remain in your inventory, and the pickups and special enemy rewards in the world become available again in the new NG+ cycle.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Save Larval Tears for meaningful build changes, not cosmetic edits or tiny stat corrections. Defeat Rennala, use Rebirth in the Grand Library, and remember that a confirmed respec consumes one tear permanently. The easiest early pickup is in the Village of the Albinaurics; the DLC tears require nighttime; and giving one to Boc has a fatal quest consequence.
