To download Fortnite for Windows, use the official Epic Games Launcher by default: install the Launcher, sign in to the correct Epic Games account, search for Fortnite, select Get, open Library, choose an installation location, and click Install. Fortnite is free to download and play, although it includes optional purchases. You can also install the official PC version through the Xbox listing.
Do not download a supposed standalone Fortnite .exe from a random website. The normal Epic installation is delivered through the Epic Games Launcher, and unofficial, cracked, repacked, or old-version installers can contain malware or simply fail to work.
Official ways to install Fortnite on Windows
There are now two official native PC distribution routes, plus cloud-streaming alternatives:

Recommended choice: use Epic unless you have a specific reason to use Xbox. Epic’s route provides the most direct Fortnite-specific installation, verification, anti-cheat, and troubleshooting instructions. Xbox announced that Fortnite joined Xbox on PC and Xbox Play Anywhere on November 18, 2025; therefore, older guides saying Epic is the only PC route are incomplete. Is Fortnite free on Windows?
Fortnite is free to download and play. The game has optional purchases, including V-Bucks, cosmetics, passes, and other in-game content. Do not assume that every Fortnite experience, add-on, or feature has identical commercial terms; check the current storefront listing for the specific content you want. The Epic Games Store listing identifies Fortnite as free and shows that an Epic Games account is required for that route.
Check whether your Windows PC can run Fortnite
Epic’s current Fortnite support requirements should take priority over older system-requirements tables copied elsewhere online. In particular, Epic’s store listing still displays Windows 10 version 1703 in its requirements information, while the newer support material lists Windows 10 version 22H2 64-bit, or Windows 10 Enterprise version 21H2 64-bit, as the minimum operating system. Because of that conflict, do not treat Windows 10 version 1703 as definitely sufficient today. Check your version and update Windows before installing.

The following specifications are the current values published by Epic’s Fortnite support article:

Minimum specifications mean that Fortnite may run; they do not promise high graphics settings, stable frame rates, or a smooth experience in every mode. A PC that only meets the minimum may need lower resolution, reduced graphics settings, Performance rendering mode, updated drivers, fewer background applications, and preferably an SSD rather than a slow hard drive.
Check your Windows version, CPU, RAM, and GPU
- Press Start and search for System Information.
- Open the app and select System Summary. Check the Windows version, processor, and installed physical memory.
- Expand Components.
- Select Display to identify the graphics adapter.
This is the same general hardware-checking process documented in Epic’s support material. If the machine is running Windows 7, Windows 8, or 32-bit Windows, it is not a suitable configuration for the current standard Fortnite Launcher installation. Epic also does not officially support the native client in Linux compatibility layers, Parallels, virtual machines, or other non-native environments.
How to download Fortnite through Epic Games Launcher
Before you start
- Use supported 64-bit Windows, preferably fully updated.
- Make sure the drive you intend to use has enough free space for the current download and temporary installation work.
- Have your Epic Games account ready. If you already play on a console, do not create a new account until you have identified the Epic account connected to that console.
- Download the Launcher only from Epic’s official download page.
- Close unnecessary applications if the computer is older or the drive has limited free space.
Step 1: Download and install the Epic Games Launcher
- Open the Epic Games Launcher download page.
- Click Download in the upper-right corner.
- Allow the Launcher installer to download. If it does not start automatically, use the platform-specific download control shown on the page.
- Run the installer and follow the Windows installation prompts. Epic’s Launcher installation guide covers the normal process.
Step 2: Download Fortnite
- Open Epic Games Launcher.
- Sign in to the correct Epic Games account. An Epic account is required for the Epic installation route.
- Select Store.
- Search for Fortnite and select the official Fortnite game tile.
- Click GET.
- Open Library.
- Select Fortnite. Accept the Epic Games terms if the Launcher displays them.
- Choose an installation location. Epic shows
C:Program FilesEpic Gamesas the default path, but you can select another folder or drive. - Review the available installation options, then click Install.
- Wait for the Launcher to download, verify, decompress, and install the files.
- When installation finishes, click Fortnite in your Library to launch it.
On first launch, Windows or Fortnite may initialize or install Easy Anti-Cheat. Allow the legitimate installation prompt when it appears; Fortnite requires the anti-cheat component to run normally.
How much storage does Fortnite need?
There is no permanent, reliable Fortnite size that should be copied into an article as a fixed number. The Launcher’s estimate can change with updates, selected features, high-resolution textures, pre-downloaded streamed assets, and the current state of your installation. Two people can see different download or update sizes even when they play on the same platform.
The Launcher may also need more free working space than the apparent download size while it decompresses, verifies, and moves files. Leave a meaningful amount of additional free space rather than filling the drive to the exact number shown.
Reduce optional installation content
- Open Epic Games Launcher.
- Open Library.
- Click the three dots beside Fortnite.
- Select Options.
- Review the available features and clear optional components you do not need, such as High Resolution Textures, if that option is shown.
- Apply the changes and allow the Launcher to update the installation.
Removing high-resolution textures can save space, but it may reduce visual quality. It is most useful on a small SSD, an older laptop, or a system using Performance mode; it is not something every player needs to disable.

Epic documents the feature-selection process and the reasons installation sizes vary in its article on Fortnite installation size and optional content.
How to install Fortnite through Xbox on PC
The official Xbox listing provides a newer alternative to Epic’s Launcher. It identifies Fortnite as free, available on PC, compatible with Xbox Play Anywhere, and available through Xbox Cloud Gaming. This route is useful if you already manage PC games through the Xbox app or want Xbox ecosystem integration.
- Open the Xbox app on Windows, or open the official Xbox Fortnite listing.
- Search for Fortnite if necessary and select the PC listing.
- Choose Install, or the equivalent installation control currently shown by the Xbox app.
- Sign in with the Microsoft/Xbox account requested by the app and follow the installation prompts.
- When Fortnite asks for an Epic account, sign in with the Epic account linked to your existing Fortnite progress.
The Xbox and Epic versions should not be described as interchangeable in every account, purchase, launcher, or currency situation. The safest approach is to use the same linked Epic account on both routes. Account progress and most purchased items are generally associated with that Epic account, while V-Bucks have platform-specific exceptions.

Sign in with the right Epic account before playing
Your installation can be completely successful and still appear to have lost your skins, progress, or Locker if you sign in to a different Epic account. Epic stores Fortnite progress and items with the account rather than with the Windows installation.
If you already play on Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Android, or another platform:
- Sign in to Epic’s account system before launching the PC version.
- Confirm which Epic account is connected to your console or mobile account.
- Link the relevant platform account to that same Epic account if it is not already linked. Epic explains the process in its guide to sharing Fortnite progress and items across platforms.
- Install Fortnite and sign in with that account.
If progress is missing, do not immediately create another Epic account or unlink a platform. First sign out, confirm the account identifier, and check which Epic account is connected. Unlinking accounts while troubleshooting can make the situation harder to recover.
What happens to V-Bucks?
Do not promise that every V-Bucks balance transfers identically between PC and console. Some purchased V-Bucks are platform-bound. Earned V-Bucks and purchased items have broader sharing rules, but exceptions apply. Check Epic’s current V-Bucks platform-sharing guidance if a balance looks different after changing platforms.

Updates
For the Epic version, open the Epic Games Launcher and launch Fortnite. If an update is available, the Launcher normally begins it automatically. Fortnite’s chapter, season, client version, and update size are volatile, so they are intentionally not hardcoded into these installation steps. Epic’s update instructions cover the current behavior.
Child accounts and parental controls
A child may be able to download and play Fortnite while still being unable to use some social or purchasing features. Epic’s Cabined Account system can restrict voice chat, free text chat, real-money purchases, certain account-linking functions, custom display names, and SMS-based two-factor authentication until parental consent is provided.

That means a missing chat option or blocked purchase is not necessarily an installation problem. Parents can review Epic account controls and Fortnite parental controls using Epic’s parental-control setup instructions.
Fix common Fortnite installation and launch problems
Before reinstalling, check the Epic Games public status page. It separates Fortnite, login, game services, matchmaking, Epic Games Store downloads and installations, and anti-cheat components. If several services are failing at once, reinstalling the game will not fix an outage.

The Epic Games Launcher will not install
Check these causes in order:
- Confirm that Windows is 64-bit and meets the current supported version. Windows 7, Windows 8, and 32-bit Windows are not suitable for the current standard installation.
- Install pending Windows updates and update the graphics driver.
- Make sure the selected installation folder exists and gives your Windows account read/write permission.
- Check free space on the system drive and the target drive.
- Temporarily investigate whether antivirus or Windows security software is blocking the installer. Do not leave security protection disabled unnecessarily.
- If an incomplete or damaged Launcher installation already exists, remove the failed installation using Epic’s official troubleshooting instructions rather than downloading a third-party replacement.
- Try running the installer as an administrator.
If the normal installer still fails, Epic documents an administrator Command Prompt fallback using msiexec:
msiexec /i "C:UsersYourNameDownloadsEpicInstaller.msi"Replace the example path with the actual location of the downloaded installer and run Command Prompt as administrator. Do not move the installer before copying or correcting its real path. See Epic’s Launcher installation troubleshooting for the complete procedure.
Install failed because there is not enough space
Free space on the target drive and, where applicable, the system drive. The installation can need additional working room while files are downloaded, decompressed, verified, and installed. Open Library → three dots beside Fortnite → Options and clear optional features such as High Resolution Textures if they are available. Do not judge available space only by comparing it with the displayed download figure.
The download is slow
- Check Epic’s status page for a service or download outage.
- Use wired Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi if possible.
- Try another network connection to determine whether the problem is local to your internet service.
- In Epic Games Launcher, open your profile icon → Settings → Download Settings.
- Clear Limit Download Speeds if it is enabled.
- Restart the Launcher.
If the problem persists, clear the Launcher cache and troubleshoot DNS or proxy settings using Epic’s download-speed support instructions.
The download rate falls to 0 MB/s
A temporary 0 MB/s reading does not always mean the download has failed. Epic says the Launcher may pause network activity while it writes, decompresses, or installs files to the drive. Check disk activity and wait before cancelling. If disk activity has stopped for an extended period and the progress does not change, then restart the Launcher and continue with the slow-download steps above.
Fortnite says it is running but no game window opens
Use the least destructive fixes first:
- Verify Fortnite’s files.
- Repair Easy Anti-Cheat.
- Check whether Windows Security or another security program is blocking the game. Add the Fortnite folder to exclusions only as a temporary troubleshooting measure and only after considering the security trade-off.
- Reinstall Easy Anti-Cheat if repair does not work.
- Reinstall Fortnite only after these steps fail.
Verify Fortnite’s files
- Open Epic Games Launcher.
- Open Library.
- Click the three dots beside Fortnite.
- Select Manage.
- Click Verify.
- Wait for the process to finish before launching the game again.
Verification checks for damaged or different files and replaces them where necessary. Epic says it does not affect saved data. The same path is documented in Epic’s file-verification guide.
Easy Anti-Cheat is missing or will not repair
First launch Fortnite and accept the legitimate Easy Anti-Cheat installation prompt if Windows displays one. If it does not appear, use Epic’s repair or installation instructions. The Fortnite installation contains the Easy Anti-Cheat files at:

Escalate in this order:
- Confirm the PC meets at least the minimum requirements.
- Verify Fortnite’s files.
- Clear the Epic Games Launcher cache.
- Update the graphics driver.
- Run the Launcher as administrator.
- Close unnecessary background programs.
- Check the storage drive for errors.
- Try installing the game on another drive.
- Reinstall the Epic Games Launcher.
- Reinstall Fortnite.
- Only later, consider removing the local
FortniteGamefolder as part of Epic’s advanced troubleshooting instructions.
On hardware near the minimum specification, reduce the graphics settings and try Fortnite’s lower-fidelity Performance rendering mode:
- Open Fortnite.
- Open the game menu.
- Open the display options.
- Set Rendering Mode to Performance – Lower Graphical Fidelity.
- Select Apply.
- Restart Fortnite.

My progress, skins, or purchases are missing
This is usually an account-identity problem rather than a bad installation. Sign out and confirm that the Windows game is using the Epic account linked to your console or mobile account. Do not unlink accounts as a first fix. If only a V-Bucks balance is missing, check the platform-specific exceptions rather than assuming the currency was deleted.

- Steam: Fortnite is not an official Steam installation. Download it through Epic or the Xbox PC route instead.
- Steam Deck: Epic says Fortnite cannot be played directly on Steam Deck. Xbox Cloud Gaming is the suggested workaround.
- Linux: The native Fortnite PC client is not officially supported through Linux or a compatibility layer.
- Parallels and virtual machines: Epic does not officially support Fortnite running in these non-native Windows environments.
- Cloud gaming: Xbox Cloud Gaming, GeForce NOW, and Amazon Luna can avoid a native installation, but they require a supported service, the relevant account or app/browser setup, and a sufficiently reliable internet connection.

Do I need the Epic Games Launcher to play Fortnite on Windows?
You need the Epic Games Launcher for Epic’s standard Windows installation. Can I download Fortnite directly as a Windows EXE?

Why is my Fortnite download size different from my friend’s?
Installation options, high-resolution textures, streamed assets, update state, and previous files can change the download or update size. A different figure does not automatically indicate a problem.
Why does Epic Games Launcher show 0 MB/s?
The Launcher can temporarily stop downloading while it writes or installs files to the drive. Check disk activity and wait before cancelling. If both disk activity and progress stop, check Epic’s service status, disable the Launcher’s download-speed limit, restart it, and troubleshoot the network connection.
Will my console Fortnite progress transfer to PC?
Progress and most purchased items are generally available when the console account and PC installation use the same linked Epic Games account. Confirm the account before signing in and do not create a second account or unlink platforms if your Locker appears empty.

Can a child install Fortnite?
A child may be able to install and play Fortnite, but an Epic Cabined Account or parental controls can restrict voice chat, text chat, purchases, account linking, display names, and some security features. A missing social or purchasing feature does not necessarily mean the installation failed.
Can I play Fortnite on Steam Deck or Linux?
