Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Short answer: Dolphin Emulator does not include commercial games. You must create or obtain a lawful game dump, copy the supported image file to your computer or Android device, and add the folder containing it under Dolphin’s Paths or Game Paths settings.
Dolphin’s official guidance is to buy the GameCube or Wii game and dump it yourself rather than downloading an ISO or ROM. This guide covers the normal disc-based process, CleanRip, supported formats, folder setup, RVZ conversion, Wii U eShop Wii titles, and the most common problems.
1. Install Dolphin from the official project
Download Dolphin only from the official Dolphin Emulator website. Choose the latest stable release unless you specifically need a fix or feature available only in a development build. Dolphin’s development builds change frequently, so avoid relying on an old version number shown in a guide.
Official downloads are available for Windows x64, Windows ARM64, macOS Universal, Android, and Linux through Flatpak. On Windows, Dolphin requires the 64-bit Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2022. Install that prerequisite if Dolphin will not start or reports a missing Visual C++ runtime.
#1 Best Overall
Installing Dolphin gives you the emulator; it does not give you any copyrighted games. The game files are a separate step.
2. Get the game legally: make your own dump
Dolphin’s official FAQ advises users not to download commercial ISOs or ROMs. The recommended route is to purchase the game and create a dump with a compatible Wii. Follow the copyright law that applies where you live: the legality of personal copying and format conversion is not identical in every jurisdiction, and owning a disc does not automatically make downloading, sharing, or distributing a copy lawful.
Do not use torrent sites, ROM repositories, “prebuilt ISO” downloads, or copied dumps from another person. A friend’s physical disc and a friend’s existing dump are not the same thing, and Dolphin’s guidance specifically directs users toward buying games and dumping them with a Wii.
Hardware required for the usual method
- A compatible Wii with the Homebrew Channel, or a Wii U running the Wii-compatible vWii environment.
- Your own lawful GameCube or Wii disc.
- CleanRip or comparable homebrew dumping software.
- An SD card or external USB storage device for the dump.
- A computer or Android device with enough free space for the resulting image.
A Wii can dump both GameCube and Wii discs. A Wii U can dump Wii discs when operating in vWii mode, but the Wii U hardware cannot dump GameCube discs through its Wii U system. If you do not own compatible dumping hardware, a used Nintendo Wii console may be one practical route—but it does not include games, and you still need legitimately obtained discs. Availability, condition, and local pricing vary.
3. Dump a GameCube or Wii disc with CleanRip
The official Dolphin game-ripping guide recommends CleanRip for Wii-based dumping. The broad process is:
- Set up the Homebrew Channel on your compatible Wii or Wii U/vWii system using your own lawful setup process.
- Place CleanRip on the console’s homebrew storage and launch it from the Homebrew Channel.
- Insert the GameCube or Wii disc.
- Choose an SD card or external USB storage device as the destination.
- Follow CleanRip’s prompts and wait until the dump finishes.
- Move the resulting ISO—or every part of a multipart ISO—to the computer or device that runs Dolphin.
CleanRip can write to an SD card for Wii or to an external USB storage device. You do not need a particular brand, but capacity and filesystem limitations matter.
How much storage do you need?
| Disc type | Approximate dump size | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| GameCube | About 1.36 GiB | A complete image can fit on FAT or FAT32 storage. |
| Single-layer Wii | About 4.38 GiB | Allow additional space for the dumping process and file transfer. |
| Dual-layer Wii | About 7.93 GiB | Set CleanRip’s Dual Layer option to Yes. |
FAT, FAT16, and FAT32 have file-size limits. When CleanRip uses the maximum chunk size on those filesystems, a Wii dump may be split into multiple parts, commonly 4 GiB chunks. If you prefer one large file and your hardware supports it, the official guide recommends NTFS for this situation.
For a dual-layer Wii disc, make sure CleanRip is configured for dual-layer media before starting. Otherwise the dump may be incomplete or unusable.

4. Move the dump to your computer or Android device
After CleanRip finishes, copy the ISO or multipart files from the SD card or USB drive to the storage used by Dolphin. Use a simple library folder, for example:
Dolphin Games/
├── GameCube/
│ ├── Game 1.iso
│ └── Game 2.rvz
└── Wii/
├── Wii Game 1.iso
└── Wii Game 2.rvz
You can use different names and folders, but keep all parts of a multipart ISO together in one directory. Do not rename multipart files or change their generated numbering. Keeping the library outside Dolphin’s program-installation directory makes upgrades, troubleshooting, and backups easier.
On Android, copy the files to a location that Dolphin can access and grant the app storage permission when Android requests it. The exact Android file-picker and settings labels can vary by Dolphin version and Android release.
5. Supported Dolphin game-file formats
Dolphin’s FAQ lists these formats and content types as supported, subject to the particular game and Dolphin version:
- GCM/ISO — conventional GameCube or Wii disc images.
- GCZ — Dolphin’s compressed image format.
- CISO — compressed ISO.
- WBFS — Wii backup format.
- WIA — Wii image archive.
- NFS — used for certain Wii U eShop Wii titles.
- RVZ — Dolphin’s recommended modern compressed format.
WBFS and CISO are described by Dolphin as lossy compression formats because they remove unused disc information. That may be acceptable for playing a game, but it is less attractive for preservation or future conversion. Keep a clean original dump when possible.
RVZ is usually the best choice for a Dolphin-only library. Dolphin’s documentation recommends RVZ for saving space, and the format can efficiently compress junk data and encrypted Wii data. Dolphin’s Android documentation describes RVZ as compatible with Dolphin 5.0-12188 and later. DolphinTool’s conversion support includes ISO, GCZ, WIA, and RVZ; its command-line help recommends Zstandard compression and a 128 KiB block size for RVZ.

Best practice: Keep the original ISO until the converted RVZ has been tested. Never delete your only source file immediately after conversion.
Use ISO when compatibility with other utilities or emulators matters more than storage efficiency. Do not simply rename an extension—for example, changing .iso to .rvz. Convert the file through Dolphin’s conversion function or DolphinTool.
6. Add the game folder to Dolphin
The exact menu labels differ slightly between desktop, Android, and Dolphin interface versions, but the process is generally the same:
- Open Dolphin.
- Open Configuration, Settings, or the equivalent options screen.
- Open Paths or Game Paths.
- Choose Add and select the folder containing your dump files.
- Enable Search Subfolders if your games are stored inside GameCube and Wii subfolders or another nested structure.
- Apply the change, then refresh or reopen the game list if necessary.
- Double-click or tap the detected title to launch it.
You can add the top-level Dolphin Games folder if recursive searching is enabled, or add the GameCube and Wii folders separately. The selected path must be readable by the operating system and mounted whenever you want to play.
7. Convert an ISO to RVZ inside Dolphin
Once the game appears in Dolphin’s list, right-click the title on desktop—or use the corresponding file action on your platform—and choose Convert File. Select RVZ as the destination format and choose the desired compression settings.
This is a file conversion, not a way to obtain a game. You still need a lawful original dump before converting. The same function can be useful for:

Keep the source files until you have confirmed that the RVZ appears in the game list and launches correctly. If conversion fails, check free storage, file permissions, the completeness of the source image, and whether all multipart files are present.
8. Wii U eShop Wii titles and NAND content
Disc dumps are the normal Dolphin setup. Wii U eShop Wii titles require a separate, advanced extraction process and should not be confused with ordinary ISO copying.
Dolphin’s ripping documentation describes extracting Wii titles purchased through the Wii U eShop with a Wii U running homebrew, a NAND dump containing the required OTP and SEEPROM data, the Wii U-formatted external drive, and a tool such as DumpsterU. After extraction, the resulting title folder can be placed in the directory containing your Wii dumps. Enable Search Subfolders in Config > Paths so Dolphin can scan the title folder.
The documentation also covers exporting Wii channels to WAD files with Yet Another BlueDump MOD and copying a complete Wii NAND into Dolphin using the NAND Usage Guide. These are advanced procedures for users who understand their console’s data and backups; they are not required to add ordinary GameCube or Wii disc dumps.

9. Troubleshoot games that do not appear
The game is not listed
- Open Paths or Game Paths and add the folder containing the dump, or its parent folder.
- Enable Search Subfolders if the file is nested inside another directory.
- Refresh the list or restart Dolphin.
- Confirm the drive, SD card, USB device, or Android storage location is mounted and readable.
- Check that the file uses a supported format and is not still inside a ZIP archive.
If you selected a folder that contains only a shortcut, archive, or unrelated files, Dolphin will not find a playable title. Select the actual library directory and inspect its contents in the operating system’s file manager.
A multipart ISO is missing or will not launch
Keep every generated part in the same folder and do not alter the part names. Use Dolphin 5.0-18861 or later, which the official ripping guide identifies as supporting multipart ISO reading. If the parts are intact, you can also try converting the multipart image to RVZ through Dolphin.

Dolphin says the file is unsupported
Verify that the file is genuinely a disc image and not an incomplete transfer, ZIP archive, or renamed unrelated file. Documented formats include GCM/ISO, GCZ, CISO, WBFS, WIA, NFS for certain Wii U eShop content, and RVZ. Renaming a file extension does not convert its contents.
The file is WBFS or CISO
Dolphin lists both formats as supported, but characterizes them as lossy because unused disc information has been removed. For a long-term library, retain a clean dump and consider converting or recreating the image in RVZ rather than treating WBFS or CISO as your only archival copy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe game launches, but performance is poor
Adding a game and making it run at full speed are separate tasks. Dolphin notes that games have different hardware requirements. Check the project’s official Performance Guide for graphics-backend, resolution, shader, and hardware guidance. Do not assume that every GameCube or Wii title will perform identically on the same device.
Quick checklist
- Install Dolphin from the official project website.
- Use a game you lawfully own or are otherwise entitled to copy under applicable law.
- Dump a GameCube or Wii disc with a compatible Wii/vWii setup and CleanRip.
- Allow enough storage: about 1.36 GiB for a GameCube image, more than 4.38 GiB for a single-layer Wii image, and about 7.93 GiB for a dual-layer Wii image.
- Keep multipart files together and use Dolphin 5.0-18861 or later for multipart ISO reading.
- Copy the dump into a dedicated library folder.
- Add that folder under Dolphin’s Paths or Game Paths settings.
- Enable Search Subfolders when using nested GameCube/Wii folders or Wii U eShop title folders.
- Optionally convert verified dumps to RVZ to save space.
- Do not download, share, or recommend commercial ROM and ISO repositories.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Dolphin Emulator come with games?
No. Dolphin is an emulator and does not supply commercial GameCube or Wii games. You must provide a lawful dump and add its folder to Dolphin.
Can I use a physical GameCube or Wii disc directly in Dolphin?
Usually, Dolphin runs a disc image stored on your computer or device. The normal supported workflow is to dump the disc with compatible Wii hardware and CleanRip, then add the resulting file to Dolphin.
What is the best format for Dolphin games?
RVZ is generally the best choice for a Dolphin-only library because it can substantially reduce storage use. Keep the original ISO as a backup until the RVZ has been verified. ISO remains useful when compatibility with other tools is more important.
Recommended Free Tools
Why is my game not showing in Dolphin?
Add the folder that actually contains the dump under Paths or Game Paths, enable Search Subfolders when needed, refresh the list, and verify that the file is in a supported format and that its storage device is readable.
Can Dolphin play multipart ISO files?
Yes, Dolphin 5.0-18861 and later can read multipart ISO files according to the official ripping guide. Keep every part together and do not rename the generated files.
The Bottom Line
Dolphin does not provide the games: you provide a lawful dump. Dump your own GameCube or Wii disc with compatible Wii/vWii hardware and CleanRip, copy the ISO or supported image into a dedicated folder, add that folder under Dolphin’s Paths or Game Paths settings, and optionally convert a verified dump to RVZ for storage savings.
