First, identify where Minecraft was purchased
Minecraft ownership has two parts that are easy to confuse:
- The game license: connected to the purchasing account and the platform where the purchase was made.
- Your saved worlds: stored locally or through a separate transfer or cloud service. Reinstalling the game does not automatically move local worlds to the new device.
Before downloading, determine whether the original purchase was made on a Windows PC, Mac, Linux computer, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Android device, iPhone or iPad, or Kindle Fire. You must generally reinstall through that same platform’s store.

Download Minecraft on a new Windows PC, Mac, or Linux computer
- Download the official Minecraft Launcher. Get it from Minecraft.net or the Microsoft Store. Avoid unofficial launchers, repacked installers, and “free Minecraft” downloads.
- Open the launcher and sign in. Use the Microsoft account that owns the purchase—not merely an account that you currently use for email, Xbox, or Windows.
- Choose the Minecraft edition shown in the launcher. On Windows, the current PC purchase includes Minecraft: Bedrock Edition for Windows and Minecraft: Java Edition. Java Edition is also available through the PC launcher on macOS and Linux.
- Select Play. The launcher downloads the required files and installs the selected edition.
If you bought Minecraft for PC through Microsoft or Minecraft.net, Windows users can access both Java and Bedrock from the launcher. Java Edition is intended for Windows, macOS, and Linux, while Bedrock is the edition used across Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and mobile platforms, subject to each platform’s availability.
If the launcher shows “Demo” or asks you to buy Minecraft
Do not buy the game again immediately. A purchase prompt commonly means the launcher is checking the wrong account or has not refreshed the entitlement.
- Sign out of the Minecraft Launcher.
- Sign back in with the exact Microsoft account that made the original purchase.
- On Minecraft.net, sign in, open Account, and select My Games. Check whether the Minecraft game cards appear there.
- Update the official launcher. If updating does not help, uninstall and reinstall the launcher from an official source.
- Check whether the original purchase was refunded or made using another email address or Microsoft account.
On a shared Windows computer, also check the account used in the Microsoft Store or Xbox app. The Microsoft Store/Xbox account and the account displayed in the Minecraft Launcher can be mismatched, which may cause an otherwise valid purchase to appear unavailable.
Download Minecraft on Xbox
- Open the Xbox or Microsoft Store on the new console.
- Sign in with the Xbox/Microsoft profile associated with the original Minecraft purchase.
- Search for Minecraft and choose Install or Download rather than purchasing it again.
- Launch the game and confirm that the correct Microsoft account is connected to Minecraft services.
If the store still displays a price, verify that you are using the same Xbox profile that bought the game. A different profile on the same console will not necessarily inherit another profile’s digital license.

Download Minecraft on PlayStation
- Sign in to the new PlayStation with the PlayStation Network account that originally purchased Minecraft.
- Open the PlayStation Store and find the edition of Minecraft you bought.
- Choose Download or Add to Library if it is available. If only a purchase option appears, check the PlayStation account and purchase history before paying again.
- Open Minecraft and use the in-game Sign in for free! option to connect the intended Microsoft account. Follow the displayed code instructions if prompted.
The Microsoft account used inside Minecraft connects you to Minecraft services, but it does not replace the PlayStation Network account that owns the PlayStation Store purchase.
Download Minecraft on Nintendo Switch
- Open Nintendo eShop on the new Switch.
- Use the Nintendo Account that originally purchased Minecraft.
- Find Minecraft and select the option to redownload it from your purchase history or library.
- Start Minecraft and select Sign in for free! to connect the appropriate Microsoft account.
As on PlayStation, the Nintendo eShop purchase remains associated with the Nintendo Account. Signing into a Microsoft account in the game does not by itself grant ownership of a Nintendo Switch copy.
Download Minecraft on Android, iPhone, iPad, or Kindle Fire
- Open Google Play, the Apple App Store, or the Amazon Appstore, depending on the device.
- Sign in with the same store account used to buy Minecraft originally.
- Find Minecraft and install it from your purchase history or the store listing. A previous purchase should show an install or download option instead of asking you to pay again.
- Open the app and sign in with the intended Microsoft account inside Minecraft if you use Minecraft services, multiplayer, or cross-device features.
The store account controls the mobile-app purchase. The Microsoft account used inside Minecraft is a separate account relationship, so signing into Microsoft alone will not necessarily restore an iPhone, Android, or Kindle purchase made through a different store account.
Does a Minecraft PC purchase work on every device?
No. The current PC entitlement is for Minecraft: Java Edition and Minecraft: Bedrock Edition for Windows. It should not be treated as a universal license for every console and mobile storefront.

For example, a PC purchase does not normally give you a free PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Android, or iPhone/iPad copy. If you are moving from one device family to another, check the destination platform’s store and its account purchase history. You may need to buy that platform’s version separately.
Will your Minecraft worlds appear on the new device?
Not necessarily. Downloading Minecraft restores the application and checks your license; it does not automatically copy local world files.
The correct transfer method depends on the original and new devices. Possible approaches include:
- Cloud-based transfer: available for some platform combinations and account setups.
- Physical storage: copying world files where the platform permits access to them.
- Minecraft Realms: a world can be uploaded to a Realm and accessed from another supported device using the appropriate account and edition.
Java and Bedrock worlds are not always directly interchangeable, and console and mobile platforms may restrict access to local save files. Confirm the edition and platform combination before deleting the old installation or wiping the old device. If the old device still works, back up or transfer the worlds before treating the new installation as complete.

What to check before buying Minecraft again
Use this sequence when the new device insists that you purchase the game:
- Confirm the platform. A PC license, console license, and mobile-store license are not automatically interchangeable.
- Confirm the purchasing account. Try other Microsoft, Apple, Google, Amazon, Xbox, PlayStation Network, or Nintendo Accounts that may have been used at the time of purchase.
- Check purchase history. Look in the relevant platform store and, for PC purchases, check Minecraft.net > Account > My Games.
- Check for refunds. A refunded purchase may no longer grant an install entitlement.
- Refresh the software. Sign out and back in, update the launcher or app, restart the device, and reinstall the official launcher or app if necessary.
- Check shared-PC accounts. On Windows, compare the account in the Minecraft Launcher with the account in the Microsoft Store or Xbox app.
- Contact official Minecraft Support. If the purchase is visible in the correct account and platform store but the game remains unavailable, provide the purchase receipt or transaction details rather than buying a duplicate copy.
Use only official downloads
Download the launcher or game only from Minecraft.net, the Microsoft Store, Xbox, PlayStation Store, Nintendo eShop, Apple App Store, Google Play, or Amazon’s official app store as appropriate. Unofficial launchers and repacked installers can contain malware, steal account credentials, or provide an invalid copy that will not recognize your purchase.

Do my Minecraft worlds transfer automatically to a new device?

Why does Minecraft say I need to buy it again?
Check that the platform account and Microsoft account are the original purchasing accounts, review purchase history, sign out and back in, update or reinstall the official launcher, and check whether the purchase was refunded. Contact official Minecraft Support if the entitlement still does not appear.
Does Minecraft Java and Bedrock on PC include the console version?
Not automatically. The PC bundle provides Bedrock for Windows and Java Edition for PC platforms. It does not generally include separate console or mobile-store licenses.
