You do not need a Microsoft Store version of Steam for the standard installation.
What you need before installing Steam
- A Windows 11 PC with an internet connection.
- Administrator access to install desktop software.
- Enough free storage for Steam and the games you want to install.
- A Steam account, or an email address you can use to create one.
Steam is Valve’s PC game storefront and desktop client. It provides access to purchased and free-to-play games, automatic game updates, community features, Workshop content for supported games, and controller support. Installing Steam does not automatically install games; games are selected and installed separately from your Steam library.
How to download Steam safely on Windows 11
- Open a browser on the Windows 11 computer.
- Go directly to Valve’s official Steam installation page.
- Select Install Steam.
- Save the Windows installer when your browser asks where to put it. The file is normally an executable installer.
- Open the downloaded installer after the download finishes.
Be particularly careful at this step. Do not download Steam from a search advertisement, an unofficial software portal, a “cracked” installer, or a link sent through a chat message. Steam identifies its official sites as steampowered.com, store.steampowered.com, steamcommunity.com, and help.steampowered.com. A page asking for your Steam password or Steam Guard code outside those domains should be treated as suspicious.

How to install the Steam client
- Open the installer from your browser’s download list or the Windows Downloads folder.
- If Windows displays a User Account Control prompt asking whether the app can make changes, approve it only if the installer came from Valve’s official Steam site.
- Follow the setup wizard. Choose the installation language if prompted and accept the default installation location unless you have a specific reason to change it.
- Allow the installer to finish copying the Steam client to your PC.
- Start Steam from the desktop shortcut, Start menu, or installer completion screen.
Steam may update itself before showing the sign-in screen. The client can restart or display a download and update process during the first launch. This is normal; let the update finish rather than repeatedly closing the program.
Valve’s support guidance expects the person installing Steam to have administrator access. If the installation fails because your account cannot make changes, sign in with an administrator account or ask the PC’s administrator to install it. On a school, work, or family-managed computer, software installation may also be blocked by organizational policy.
Sign in or create a Steam account
When Steam opens, select the option to sign in with an existing account or create a new account through Steam’s official account flow. Your account is associated with your purchases and game library. Signing in on another compatible PC lets you access that library, but it does not automatically transfer every locally stored game file to the new computer.
Use an email address you control and protect it with a strong, unique password. Do not share your password, Steam Guard code, recovery code, or authenticator information with another person—even if the request appears to come from a friend.

How to install and launch a game through Steam
- Open Steam and sign in.
- Use the Store tab to search for a game.
- Buy the game if it is paid, or choose the free-to-play option where applicable.
- Open Library.
- Select the game and choose Install.
- Choose an installation drive or library location.
- Review the required storage space and start the download.
- When installation completes, select Play.
Requirements are different for every game. Check the individual Steam store page for its download size, free-storage requirement, processor and graphics requirements, supported operating systems, and any additional launcher or account requirement. There is no single storage or hardware requirement that applies to every Steam game, and not every game is guaranteed to work identically on Windows 11.
Choose the right drive for your Steam library
You can use an available internal drive or a suitable external drive if it has enough free space and remains connected while Steam or the game is running. Before choosing a location:
- Compare the drive’s free space with the game’s required space. Leave additional room for updates and temporary files.
- Prefer a reliable internal drive or a properly connected external drive.
- Do not disconnect, rename, or routinely change the drive while Steam is downloading or a game is running.
- Remember that a game can require more space later when updates or downloadable content are installed.
An SSD is an optional upgrade that can be useful for reducing game loading times, but the result depends on the particular game and the rest of the PC. It is not required to download or use Steam.
Steam updates and game file verification
Steam normally downloads and installs game updates through the client. If a game will not launch, first check whether Steam is still downloading, updating, or validating it. A game may not open while an update is in progress.

For a missing executable or suspected damaged installation, use this sequence:
- Close and reopen Steam.
- Restart Windows 11.
- Check the game’s download status in Library and confirm that no update is waiting.
- Confirm that the drive containing the game is connected and available.
- In Library, right-click the game and select Properties.
- Open Installed Files and select Verify integrity of game files or the equivalent current verification label.
- Wait for Steam to compare the installation and redownload missing or damaged files.
- Check the game’s own system requirements and the developer’s support documentation if it still fails.
Verification can take time and may redownload files. It is different from reinstalling the whole game and will not necessarily fix problems caused by incompatible graphics drivers, third-party overlays, another launcher, anti-cheat software, or a game-specific Windows issue.
If the Steam client itself is damaged
Restart Windows first and make sure your internet connection is working. If Steam remains broken, rerun the official installer from Valve’s Steam download page. Steam Support states that rerunning the installer can reinstall the client when troubleshooting an existing installation. Avoid downloading replacement files from unofficial sites.

Protect your Steam account with Steam Guard
Steam Guard adds another authentication layer when Steam detects a login from an unrecognized device. Steam’s email-based option requires a verified contact email. The Steam Mobile app can provide mobile-authenticator codes and is described by Steam as the stronger option because the codes are tied to a physical device controlled by the account owner.

When setting up the mobile authenticator, Steam may ask you to confirm a phone number. Save the recovery code somewhere secure, separate from the phone. You may need it if the phone or authenticator is lost.
- Never give anyone your password, Steam Guard code, recovery code, or Steam Guard file.
- Do not assume a link is safe because it was sent by a friend; their account may have been compromised.
- Steam Support does not use ordinary friend messages or Discord contacts to request your credentials.
- If you suspect a compromise, change your Steam password, secure the associated email account, review authorized devices, and scan the PC for malware.
Windows 11 S mode: why the normal installer may not work
Windows 11 in S mode restricts software installation to Microsoft Store apps unless you permanently switch out of S mode. Microsoft says leaving S mode is one-way, so do not make that change casually on a managed, school, or low-maintenance PC.
If the standard Steam installer is blocked:
- Open Start and search for Microsoft Store.
- Check whether a current, official Steam listing is available for your device. Do not assume that the standard Steam desktop installer is distributed through the Microsoft Store.
- If no suitable Store option exists, read Microsoft’s current S mode instructions and decide whether permanently switching out is appropriate.
- If the Store is missing, the PC may be using a local account or an organizational administrator may have disabled it.
Use Microsoft’s current support documentation for the exact Windows 11 S mode interface before switching. If the computer belongs to an organization, contact its administrator instead of attempting to bypass the restriction.

Can I install Steam from the Microsoft Store?
