All Pokémon Games on Nintendo Switch in 2026

As of August 12, 2026, the U.S. Nintendo Switch family has paid Pokémon RPGs, the new Switch 2-exclusive Pokémon Pokopia, the free-to-start battle game Pokémon Champions, digital FireRed and LeafGreen rereleases, major spin-offs, free downloads, DLC, and Pokémon HOME. The best choice depends on whether you want a traditional adventure, competitive battles, a cozy crafting game, classic Kanto, photography, mystery, or a free download.

This guide covers the original Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and titles available on both platforms. It separates games from DLC and companion software so a digital add-on or free app is not mistaken for a standalone Pokémon game.

What is new in 2026?

Three notable additions changed the Nintendo Switch Pokémon catalog in 2026:

  • Pokémon Champions launched on April 8 as a free-to-start battle-focused game for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and mobile devices.
  • Pokémon Pokopia launched on March 5 as a paid Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive focused on crafting, rebuilding, farming, and community development.
  • Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version returned as digital-only Nintendo Switch releases on February 27. Both are playable on Nintendo Switch 2.

The complete United States catalog below is organized by what you can play, what you must buy separately, and which hardware each title requires. It includes paid games, free-to-start games, digital rereleases, DLC, and Pokémon HOME because Nintendo includes HOME in its Pokémon software catalog. Mobile-only Pokémon products are excluded. Availability and release information were checked against the United States storefront and official Pokémon sources on August 12, 2026; other regions may differ. See Nintendo’s official Pokémon catalog for current storefront entries.

Pokémon Champions: choose this for battling, not exploration

Pokémon Champions is designed around Pokémon battles rather than a traditional regional journey. It uses familiar Pokémon types, Abilities, moves, and battle formats, and is intended to support competitive play including the 2026 Pokémon World Championships. It also supports cross-platform play with mobile devices.

The base game is free to start, but Nintendo’s listing also identifies a paid Starter Pack bundle. It is presented as a digital product rather than a conventional physical game purchase, so it belongs in the free-to-start and online-battle part of the catalog—not alongside the cartridge-based RPGs.

Pokémon Pokopia: the Switch 2-exclusive cozy game

Pokémon Pokopia puts the player in control of Ditto in a desolate world that can be rebuilt into a Pokémon community. The core loop involves gathering materials, growing crops, crafting furniture, and developing the surrounding world. It is the clearest choice for players who want a relaxed building and life-simulation experience instead of gym challenges or ranked battles.

Pokopia supports single-player, local wireless play, online multiplayer, and GameShare. Nintendo lists both a physical edition and a digital edition. If you prefer a cartridge, compare the Pokémon Pokopia physical edition, but confirm the retailer listing and region before buying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pokopia also has a paid Expansion Pass. Nintendo describes a three-part plan: Part 1, Bubbly Basin, adds underwater exploration and other content; Part 2 is scheduled for late 2026; and Part 3 is scheduled for 2027. The latter dates are publisher plans and may change.

Hardware warning: Pokémon Pokopia is exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2. It does not belong on an original Nintendo Switch shopping list. If Pokopia is the reason you are upgrading, compare a Nintendo Switch 2 console rather than assuming the standard Switch version will run it.

FireRed and LeafGreen: classic Kanto, but digital only

Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version are based on the Game Boy Advance adventures and preserve their Kanto setting and original presentation. Nintendo released them separately as digital-only Nintendo Switch titles on February 27, 2026. They are not physical Switch cartridges, despite the original games having physical Game Boy Advance releases.

The Nintendo announcement identifies English, French, and Spanish releases and gives an estimated file size of roughly 39–40 MB for each game. The Switch versions include local-wireless features and can also be played on Nintendo Switch 2.

  • Fun Gadgets: Unlock new gadgets and abilities as you progress, like a grappling hook, rocket boots and power gloves to navigate through the levels. Puzzles and Bosses: Use your brain to solve puzzles and defeat unique bosses. Each boss fight requires clever use of your team’s abilities.
  • Humor and Action: Enjoy funny dialogue, amusing interactions, and non-stop action that keeps you engaged in Dog Man’s world. Rewards and Collectibles: Revisit levels with new gadgets to find secret areas, and rescue the missing Comic Club members.
  • Art Style: Great animations inspired by the books, with comic-style sound effects that add a fun, cartoonish touch to the action.

The LeafGreen product page identifies Pokémon HOME support as coming soon. Because that wording may have changed after the product page was published, check the current listing and HOME support information before buying the game specifically to transfer Pokémon into the cloud service.

Every paid Pokémon adventure on Nintendo Switch

These are the traditional role-playing games and adventure-focused releases. Standard games generally have physical and digital purchasing options, while the two 2026 Kanto rereleases are explicitly digital-only. DLC is listed separately because it is an add-on, not a standalone Pokémon adventure.

Title Type Platform U.S. release Format Additional content

Pokémon LeafGreen Version Game Boy Advance-based Kanto adventure Nintendo Switch; playable on Switch 2 February 27, 2026 Digital only No DLC identified; HOME support status should be verified before transfer

Nintendo’s Pokémon storefront supplies the catalog entries and U.S. release dates. Nintendo’s Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl information confirms Switch availability and Switch 2 compatibility. The official Pokémon Legends: Z-A purchase page lists both the original Switch release and the enhanced Switch 2 Edition.

Which adventure should you buy?

  • Newest traditional adventure: Pokémon Legends: Z-A is the newest adventure-focused Pokémon release in this catalog. Choose the standard Switch version if you have the original console, or the enhanced edition if you have Switch 2. Compare the Pokémon Legends: Z-A Nintendo Switch 2 Edition only when you specifically want the Switch 2 version.
  • Open-world school-and-region adventure: Choose Scarlet or Violet. The games are separate versions, and The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero must match the version you own.
  • Historical exploration: Choose Pokémon Legends: Arceus for a more exploration-driven take on catching and researching Pokémon.
  • Sinnoh remake: Choose Brilliant Diamond or Shining Pearl.
  • Galar adventure: Choose Sword or Shield, with the corresponding Expansion Pass if you want its additional content.
  • Kanto with modernized catching: Choose Let’s Go, Pikachu! or Let’s Go, Eevee! if you want a more approachable Kanto adventure with its version-specific partner Pokémon.
  • Original-style Kanto: Choose FireRed or LeafGreen, but plan for a digital purchase and verify current HOME support if transfers matter to you.

For a broad shopping comparison, a filtered selection of Pokémon games for Nintendo Switch is more useful than treating every catalog entry as interchangeable: some are physical RPGs, some are digital-only, and some are free-to-start software.

Pokémon Pokopia Cozy simulation and crafting game Nintendo Switch 2 March 5, 2026 Paid physical and digital editions; covered in the 2026 section above

UNITE is not the same kind of battle game as Champions

Pokémon UNITE is a team-based multiplayer game built around five-versus-five matches and cross-platform play between Nintendo Switch and mobile. It is a better fit for players who want coordinated team matches than for someone looking for the traditional turn-based battle formats emphasized by Pokémon Champions.

The smaller free downloads

Pokémon Quest and Pokémon Café ReMix are free downloads on Nintendo Switch. They are easy to confuse with full-price RPGs when browsing a large Pokémon list, so treat them as separate free-to-download spin-offs rather than substitutes for Scarlet, Violet, Legends: Z-A, or the other adventure games.

Pokémon HOME is also free to download on Switch and mobile. Its purpose is storage and Pokémon management across supported games, not exploration or battling in a standalone region. Premium features may be sold separately. HOME compatibility is not universal across every Pokémon title, so check the current support list before purchasing an older release for transfers.

Nintendo Switch versus Nintendo Switch 2

For most of the catalog, the important distinction is whether a game has an original Switch release, a Switch 2-compatible version, or a Switch 2-exclusive edition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Switch 2 exclusive: Pokémon Pokopia requires Nintendo Switch 2.
  • Dedicated enhanced version: Pokémon Legends: Z-A has both a Nintendo Switch release and a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, both released October 16, 2025.
  • Switch release confirmed playable on Switch 2: Nintendo identifies FireRed, LeafGreen, Brilliant Diamond, and Shining Pearl as playable or compatible on Switch 2 through their relevant product information.
  • Original Switch catalog: Scarlet, Violet, Legends: Arceus, Sword, Shield, Let’s Go, Rescue Team DX, New Pokémon Snap, Detective Pikachu Returns, and Pokkén Tournament DX are original Nintendo Switch entries in this catalog. Check the individual product page for the current compatibility and edition details before buying for Switch 2.

Do not pay for a Switch 2 console merely to play the entire Pokémon catalog: the main reason to require the newer hardware in this list is Pokopia, while Legends: Z-A offers a separate enhanced edition.

Online, local, and cross-platform requirements

Multiplayer is not one single feature across these games:

  • Pokémon Champions: supports cross-platform play between Switch, Switch 2, and mobile and focuses on ranked, casual, and competitive battles.
  • Pokémon UNITE: supports five-versus-five team battles and cross-platform Switch/mobile play.
  • Pokémon Pokopia: supports local wireless, online multiplayer, and GameShare. Nintendo’s official product information identifies Nintendo Switch Online requirements for applicable online features.
  • FireRed and LeafGreen: include local-wireless features in their Switch releases.
  • Pokémon HOME: connects supported Pokémon software to a cloud-management service, with premium features available separately.

If online play is central to your decision, check the current product page for the specific game and region. A Nintendo Switch Online membership may be identified as necessary for applicable online features, but that does not mean every free-to-start Pokémon download uses the same requirement or pricing model.

Buying guide: physical, digital, DLC, and free-to-start

Buy a physical copy when portability or resale matters

Most of the major Switch RPGs and paid spin-offs listed above have standard physical and digital editions. A physical copy can be useful if you share games between consoles, want to avoid a large download, or want the possibility of reselling it. Retail stock, prices, bundles, and regional editions change frequently, so a current listing matters more than a catalog entry from the original launch year.

Pokémon Pokopia also has a physical edition, but that cartridge is for Nintendo Switch 2 because the game is exclusive to that system.

Know which products are digital only

  • FireRed Version and LeafGreen Version are digital-only Switch releases.
  • Pokémon Champions is listed as a digital free-to-start game, with a paid Starter Pack option.
  • The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero, Mega Dimension, and the Sword and Shield Expansion Passes are DLC or add-on purchases rather than standalone cartridges.
  • Pokémon Quest, Pokémon Café ReMix, Pokémon UNITE, and Pokémon HOME are downloads.

Do not buy a listing that claims to be a physical Switch cartridge of the 2026 FireRed or LeafGreen releases without independently verifying what is actually being sold.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Budget for version-specific DLC

The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero is paid DLC for Scarlet and Violet, and each version is sold separately. Buy the add-on that matches your base game. Mega Dimension is paid DLC for Pokémon Legends: Z-A and its Switch 2 Edition. Sword and Shield have their corresponding Expansion Pass products. Pokopia’s paid Expansion Pass is planned in three parts, with Bubbly Basin identified as the first part and later content scheduled for late 2026 and 2027.

Which Pokémon game fits your play style?

If you want… Start with… Why
The newest adventure Pokémon Legends: Z-A It is the newest adventure-focused Pokémon entry in the catalog, with an original Switch version and an enhanced Switch 2 Edition.
Competitive Pokémon battles Pokémon Champions It is built around ranked, casual, and competitive battle formats and is free to start.
A five-versus-five team game Pokémon UNITE Its central format is coordinated team play rather than a traditional Pokémon RPG campaign.
A cozy building game Pokémon Pokopia Ditto rebuilds a ruined world through gathering, farming, crafting, and community development.
Classic Kanto FireRed, LeafGreen, or Let’s Go FireRed and LeafGreen preserve the Game Boy Advance-based adventure digitally; Let’s Go offers another Kanto adventure on Switch.
Exploration and research Pokémon Legends: Arceus It focuses on exploring and documenting a historical Pokémon setting.
A Sinnoh remake Brilliant Diamond or Shining Pearl These are the Switch Sinnoh remake choices, with Switch 2 compatibility confirmed by Nintendo.
Photography New Pokémon Snap The main objective is observing and photographing Pokémon rather than building a conventional team.
A mystery story Detective Pikachu Returns It is a story-driven detective adventure.
Dungeon crawling Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX It combines Pokémon with randomly structured dungeon exploration.
Fighting-game combat Pokkén Tournament DX It is the dedicated Pokémon fighting-game entry on Switch.
A free download UNITE, Quest, Café ReMix, or Champions These downloads let you start without purchasing a standard full-price cartridge, although free-to-start games can offer paid content.

Scope and regional caveats

This is a United States catalog snapshot, not a promise that every title, language, price, physical edition, or DLC bundle is identical worldwide. Nintendo storefront availability can change, and retailers may have different stock from the eShop. Release dates in the tables are U.S. dates supplied by Nintendo or Pokémon sources.

The list is intentionally broader than just mainline RPGs. Nintendo presents Pokémon HOME alongside Pokémon software, and the catalog also contains free downloads, digital rereleases, DLC, battle games, puzzle games, photography, detective stories, and hardware-specific editions. If you only want full paid adventures, use the first main catalog table and exclude the free software, HOME, DLC, and spin-off sections.
