For most players, the best Minecraft trident setup is Mending, Unbreaking III, Loyalty III, Channeling, and Impaling V. That combination gives you a durable, reusable ranged weapon with underwater damage and lightning utility. Choose Riptide III instead of Loyalty and Channeling if your priority is fast movement through water or rain.

There is no single perfect trident enchantment list for every player. Mending and Unbreaking improve almost every trident, while Loyalty, Riptide, Channeling, and Impaling serve different combat and travel roles. The ranking below treats “best” as a balance of usefulness, versatility, and how much each enchantment changes what the trident can do.
The six best trident enchantments

1. Mending
Mending is the best long-term trident enchantment. It uses experience orbs you collect to restore the trident’s durability. That matters more on a trident than on many ordinary tools because tridents cannot be crafted. Without Mending, your main repair options are combining the trident with another trident or using an anvil, both of which make preserving the original item more valuable.

Mending is only level I; there is no normal Mending II or higher. It does not increase attack damage or make the trident return faster, but it can keep a good trident usable indefinitely when you regularly collect experience.
There is one practical catch: experience is assigned among eligible Mending-equipped items rather than automatically repairing the trident first. If the trident is in your hand, it can receive repair experience; if you are repairing it as a weapon you are not holding, other damaged Mending gear may compete for those orbs. For reliable repairs, hold the trident while collecting experience and temporarily remove or avoid using other damaged Mending equipment.

2. Unbreaking III
Unbreaking III makes every other trident enchantment more practical. It reduces how often durability is consumed, so the trident lasts longer before it needs repair. This is especially useful on a Riptide trident, which may be activated repeatedly during travel, and on a Loyalty trident that is thrown constantly in combat.

Unbreaking does not repair the item. It only reduces durability consumption. Mending and Unbreaking solve different problems:
- Unbreaking III slows the loss of durability.
- Mending I restores durability with collected experience.
The strongest permanent trident normally has both. If you have to choose one temporarily, Mending is usually the better long-term investment, but a frequently used trident should eventually receive Unbreaking III as well.
3. Loyalty III
Loyalty III is the default choice for a conventional throwing trident. When you throw the trident, it returns to you after striking a target or reaching its destination. Higher levels reduce the return time, making Loyalty III the usual top-level choice for combat and exploration.
Without Loyalty, a thrown trident can land somewhere inconvenient or become difficult to retrieve. With Loyalty III, the weapon functions more like a reusable ranged attack: throw it, let it return, and throw it again. That makes Loyalty the best choice for players who want to fight from a distance, attack mobs while exploring, or carry one dependable throwing weapon.

Loyalty cannot be combined with Riptide in a normal survival setup. This is not a case where Riptide is simply a stronger version of Loyalty: the two enchantments create different trident types. Loyalty keeps the trident as a throwing weapon, while Riptide turns it into a movement tool.
4. Riptide III
Riptide is the most transformative trident enchantment. Instead of throwing the trident normally, using it in water or rain propels you in the direction you are facing. It does not work as a dry-land launch, so it is not the right choice for players whose priority is ranged attacks against ordinary land mobs.
Riptide is excellent for:
- Moving quickly through oceans, rivers, and other bodies of water.
- Launching yourself during rain.
- Combining water movement with elytra travel.
- Creating sudden mobility options in some PvP situations.
Its approximate launch distances are about 9 blocks at level I, 15 blocks at level II, and 21 blocks at level III, according to the Minecraft Wiki’s PvP guidance. Riptide III is therefore the practical target for a dedicated mobility trident.
Riptide is incompatible with both Loyalty and Channeling. Keep a separate Riptide trident if you also want a conventional combat trident. Trying to combine every desirable trident enchantment on one item will leave you with an incompatible build.
5. Channeling
Channeling gives a thrown trident lightning utility during a thunderstorm. When the trident hits a valid mob under the required storm conditions, it can summon a lightning bolt at the target. Channeling is only level I in ordinary gameplay.
This makes Channeling useful for:
- Creating charged creepers.
- Triggering lightning-based mob transformations.
- Storm combat and specialized farms or experiments.
- Players who want a unique utility weapon rather than only extra damage.
Channeling ranks below the durability and return enchantments because it depends on a thunderstorm, a valid target, and a successful hit. It is not an everyday combat upgrade in the way Loyalty or Unbreaking is. It remains one of the six best choices because no other trident enchantment provides the same lightning function.
Lightning can also create hazards and unintended results. Depending on the target and situation, it may create a charged creeper, turn a villager into a witch, or turn a pig into a zombified piglin. Use Channeling carefully near builds, villagers, animals, and other mobs.
Channeling cannot be combined with Riptide. A Channeling trident must be built as a throwing trident, normally with Loyalty.

6. Impaling V
Impaling increases trident damage against aquatic targets, but its exact behavior depends on the edition. Level V is the maximum normal level and is the best choice for ocean monuments, guardians, elder guardians, drowned, and other underwater combat.
This edition difference changes how much you should prioritize Impaling. A Java player who rarely visits oceans may put it below the other utility enchantments. A Bedrock player fighting in rain, near water, or against wet players can get considerably more combat value from Impaling V.

This is the strongest one-trident setup for conventional ranged use. It returns after being thrown, lasts much longer, repairs itself with experience, deals extra aquatic-target damage, and can summon lightning during thunderstorms. It deliberately leaves out Riptide because Riptide conflicts with Loyalty and Channeling.

Use this build for ocean travel, river movement, rain launches, and elytra-assisted travel. Impaling is useful when the trident is also used for aquatic combat, especially on Bedrock. This build excludes Loyalty and Channeling because Riptide cannot coexist with either one.

Bedrock players get more opportunities to benefit from Impaling because the enchantment applies to entities in contact with water or rain, not only aquatic mobs. Loyalty makes this a reusable ranged weapon, while Channeling adds storm utility.

How to get and preserve a trident
Tridents cannot be crafted, so obtaining one is part of the investment. Tridents are associated with gameplay involving drowned, and current Java content also includes reward containers and vault-related trial-chamber systems. Exact acquisition mechanics and availability can vary by edition and game version, so do not assume that one drop rate or farming method applies universally.
Once you obtain one, prioritize Mending and Unbreaking before spending time optimizing its combat role. A trident without durability protection can become expensive or impossible to replace, particularly if it has a valuable combination of Loyalty, Channeling, or high-level Impaling.
A drowned farm or trident-killer design may help with acquisition, but farm behavior depends on edition, version, and the specific design. Check a current guide for your exact platform before building around stated rates. The same caution applies to anvil costs and version-specific mechanics: they can change, and they are not necessary to decide which six enchantments are best.

Trident gift and reference ideas
If you are shopping for a Minecraft fan rather than improving an in-game item, a Minecraft trident toy is a natural physical gift category.
