Hints for Connections #610
Want a nudge without seeing the answers? These are the four category-level clues:
#1 Best Overall
- Yellow: Ways to lightly spread or disperse something.
- Green: Terms used to describe how wine smells.
- Blue: Words someone might say when surrendering or asking for something to end.
- Purple: Words whose pronunciation commonly varies among English speakers.
Connections #610 answers for February 10
Yellow: SPRINKLE
DUST, PEPPER, SCATTER, SHOWER
These words can describe spreading or distributing something over an area. To dust or pepper something is to apply a small amount, while scatter means to distribute things irregularly. Shower can also mean to send or distribute something in a falling or dispersed way.
Green: SCENTS OF WINE
AROMA, BOUQUET, NOSE, NOTE
This is the most specialized group in the puzzle. In wine tasting, an aroma is a wine’s smell; its bouquet generally refers to a developed or complex fragrance; and the nose is the wine’s overall olfactory profile. A note is a particular scent a taster detects, such as a floral, fruity, spicy, or earthy note.
Rank #2
Blue: “AAH, ENOUGH!”
MERCY, STOP, TRUCE, UNCLE
Each word can signal a desire for relief or an end to pressure, conflict, or an activity. Stop is direct, while mercy asks for compassion and a truce calls for a halt in hostilities. Uncle comes from the expression cry uncle, meaning to surrender or admit defeat.
Purple: WORDS FAMOUSLY PRONOUNCED DIFFERENT WAYS
AUNT, EITHER, TOMATO, VASE
These words have familiar pronunciation variants among English speakers:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- AUNT: commonly pronounced like “ant” or “awnt.”
- EITHER: commonly pronounced “EE-ther” or “EYE-ther.”
- TOMATO: commonly pronounced “tuh-MAH-toh” or “tuh-MAY-toh.”
- VASE: commonly pronounced “vays” or “vahz.”
The connection is about pronunciation, not a shared definition, spelling pattern, or regional vocabulary. Because many players use only one pronunciation for some of these words, this can be a difficult purple category to spot.
The trickiest parts of Connections #610
The wine group is easy to overlook because nose, bouquet, and note can all seem like ordinary words related to smells or flowers. Putting them together with aroma requires recognizing the more specific language of wine tasting.
Rank #4
There are also tempting decoys. AUNT and UNCLE look like a possible family pair, but they belong in separate groups: AUNT is part of the pronunciation category, while UNCLE completes the surrender-themed group through “cry uncle.”
The yellow category may also cause hesitation over SHOWER. Although a shower can involve a large quantity of falling water, the verb can describe distributing or sending something over an area, which is the sense intended here.
