Short answer: download the official Minecraft Launcher from Minecraft.net or the Microsoft Store, sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the game, and then install Minecraft: Java Edition or Minecraft for Windows. On Windows 10 and Windows 11, a normal purchase is Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC, which includes both editions.

The right edition depends mainly on the device you use and who you want to play with:

Java and Bedrock are separate games for practical purposes: their saves are not automatically compatible. If you already have a world or want to join a particular server, choose the same edition used by that world, server, or group of friends.
What you need before downloading
- A Microsoft account. The account used at checkout becomes associated with the purchase.
- The official Minecraft Launcher, installed from Minecraft.net or the Microsoft Store.
- A supported operating system: the current launcher requirements list Windows 10 or later, macOS 10.15 or later, or Ubuntu 19.10 or later for launcher updates.
- A purchase of the PC bundle or access through a qualifying subscription, unless you are using the official trial.
Use the Microsoft account you intend to play with. Buying the game on one account and signing into the launcher with another is one of the most common reasons an owned copy appears to be missing.
How to download Minecraft on Windows 10 or 11
1. Get the official Minecraft Launcher
Open Minecraft.net’s official download page or search the Microsoft Store for Minecraft Launcher. Install the launcher supplied by Mojang/Microsoft.
Do not use a “free Minecraft” EXE, cracked launcher, torrent, unofficial mirror, or modified installer. The launcher itself is free, but downloading it does not give you permanent access to the full game.

Open the launcher and select the sign-in option. Use the Microsoft account that owns Minecraft, or create the account you plan to use before purchasing the game. If you have already bought Minecraft but cannot see it, sign out and back in with the account used at checkout, then check the account’s game library or My Games area.

3. Buy or access the PC edition
If you do not own Minecraft, purchase Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC through Minecraft.net or the Microsoft/Xbox Store. The U.S. Xbox listing showed the bundle at $29.99 or more as of the research date, but the price and promotions should be checked on the store page before publication or purchase.
The direct purchase is the ownership option. Some qualifying PC Game Pass subscription tiers also include Minecraft access, but subscription access is not the same as permanently owning the game. Tier names, prices, catalog inclusion, and eligibility can change.
4. Select the edition in the launcher
After signing in, use the game list on the left side of the launcher:

- Select Minecraft for Windows if you want Bedrock cross-play with consoles and mobile devices.
- Choose Install or Play. The launcher downloads the required files and completes the installation.
Once installation finishes, press Play again to start the selected edition. You can return to the launcher later and install or launch the other included edition.
How to install Minecraft on Mac or Linux
Download and install the official Minecraft Launcher, sign in with your Microsoft account, and select Minecraft: Java Edition. Java is the PC version intended for macOS and Linux. Do not expect the Windows Bedrock application, labeled Minecraft for Windows, to install natively on either platform.

The launcher’s current operating-system baseline lists macOS 10.15 or newer and Ubuntu 19.10 or newer for receiving launcher updates. Linux distributions other than Ubuntu may require additional setup and may not receive identical launcher support, so check the current official requirements before installing.
Current PC requirements
Many older Minecraft guides quote requirements that are no longer current. Mojang’s requirements update dated July 21, 2026 raised the target for Java Edition. The following figures describe the current research position, not necessarily what applied throughout 2025.

These are targets rather than a promise that every computer below them will fail to launch. An older PC may still run Minecraft, but Mojang does not guarantee the same performance or visual quality below the current minimum target. Java performance can also depend on render distance, shaders, texture packs, mods, background applications, and whether the computer uses integrated or discrete graphics.
A keyboard and mouse are normal PC controls, but a gaming keyboard, mouse, headset, or controller is optional equipment—not a requirement for downloading or installing Minecraft.
How to update Minecraft after installation
Java Edition
The launcher normally selects the newest release automatically. If it shows an older version, open the version selector beside the Play button and choose Latest Release. Be cautious with old installations that use mods: a modded profile may need to remain on a specific game version until its mods are updated.

Minecraft for Windows
Bedrock updates are normally handled through the launcher. If an update is not appearing, open the launcher, select Minecraft: Bedrock Edition or Minecraft for Windows, open the Installation tab, and choose Check for Updates if that option is available in your current launcher version.

Can you download Minecraft for free?
You can download the official launcher for free, but that is not the same as getting the full game free. Full access generally requires purchasing the PC edition or using a qualifying subscription.
Minecraft also offers an official free trial on eligible devices. The official trial information lists Java Edition trials for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Trial length varies by device and averages roughly five in-game days, or about 100 minutes of in-game time. Java trial users cannot access multiplayer servers; limited LAN multiplayer is allowed. Treat the trial as a compatibility and gameplay test, not as a permanent free edition.

The launcher says I do not own Minecraft
- Sign out of the launcher.
- Sign back in with the Microsoft account used to buy the game.
- Check the account’s My Games area or library.
- Confirm that you purchased the PC edition rather than a console-only product.
- Restart the launcher after the account and purchase are confirmed.
The launcher will not install or update
- Confirm that Windows, macOS, or Ubuntu meets the current launcher operating-system baseline.
- Install the launcher only from Minecraft.net or the Microsoft Store.
- Restart the PC and try the official installer again.
- Update Windows or your supported operating system if it is below the required version.
- Use the official Minecraft Help troubleshooting resources if the error continues.
Java runs slowly or crashes
First test without shaders, unusually high render distance, or large modpacks. Close unnecessary background applications and make sure the graphics driver and operating system are current. As an advanced step, Mojang’s support guidance allows users to inspect installed RAM and adjust memory settings for the Java installation in the launcher. Do not treat increasing allocated memory as a universal fix: allocating too much can also make the computer less responsive, especially on a system with limited RAM.
I cannot join my friends
Check the edition before changing settings. Java players need a Java-compatible server or multiplayer group; Bedrock players need a Bedrock-compatible environment. A Java save does not automatically become a Bedrock save, and choosing different editions is a more likely explanation than a failed download when friends cannot see the same world.
