Hints for the November 24 Connections puzzle
Try these category clues before looking at the answers:
- Yellow: Move from side to side.
- Green: Subject.
- Blue: Hey DJ!
- Purple: [Residue of fire] blank.
If you are still solving, look for words that can describe an unstable movement, four basic noun categories, styles of electronic dance music, and compounds or phrases beginning with “ash.”
What are today’s NYT Connections answers?
Yellow: CAREEN
HEAVE, LURCH, PITCH, REEL
Each of these words can describe moving, tipping, or swaying from side to side. They are difficult to group because several have other familiar meanings: you can heave or pitch something, while a person or vehicle can lurch or reel after losing balance.
Rank #2
Green: WHAT A NOUN MIGHT BE
IDEA, PERSON, PLACE, THING
These are common examples of what a noun can name. An idea is an abstract noun, while a person, place, or thing represents the familiar basic categories often used when explaining nouns.

Blue: ELECTRONIC DANCE MUSIC GENRES
AMBIENT, HOUSE, JUNGLE, TRANCE
These are electronic music genres or styles. House and trance are especially recognizable dance-music categories; ambient and jungle can be harder to identify if you first read them as ordinary descriptive words rather than music terms.
Purple: WORDS AFTER “ASH”
BLOND, TRAY, TREE, WEDNESDAY
Put “ash” before each word:
- ash blond — a pale, cool-toned hair color
- ashtray — a container for cigarette ash
- ash tree — a type of tree
- Ash Wednesday — the Christian observance
This is the purple group because the connections use different forms: one is normally written as a phrase, one as a closed compound, one as a noun phrase, and one as a proper name or religious observance.
Rank #3
The Addams Family red herring
WEDNESDAY, THING, and LURCH strongly suggest the Addams Family. Wednesday Addams and Thing are characters associated with the franchise, while Lurch is the family’s butler. That is an intentional-looking trap, but it cannot form a group of four here.
WEDNESDAY belongs with BLOND, TRAY, and TREE because all four can follow “ash.” Once Wednesday is removed from the fictional-character association, the remaining words resolve into the noun and movement groups.

How NYT Connections works
Connections presents 16 words that must be divided into four groups of four. Each group has a shared link, but some words are designed to fit tempting alternative categories. The four difficulty colors traditionally run from yellow, the most straightforward group, through green and blue to purple, the most deceptive.
Because the puzzle is published daily, the date and game number matter when looking up an older answer. This page covers the puzzle published on Sunday, November 24, 2024, which was Connections #532. November 24, 2025 was a Monday, so the 2024 puzzle is the one that matches the Sunday wording in this title.
Finished the puzzle? The key lesson from this one is to question the most vivid association. The Addams Family idea is memorable, but the quieter “ash” phrases provide the intended purple connection.
