Fallout Official Timeline Confirmed: How the Show Fits In With the Games

The Fallout TV series is canon to the games, not a separate continuity or direct adaptation. Here is the confirmed chronology from the Great War and Fallout 76 through Fallout 4, Season 1 in 2296, and Season 2’s return to New Vegas and the Mojave.

Yes—the Fallout television series is canon to the games and exists in the same continuity. It is an original story rather than a remake of any one game. The show’s main present-day story begins in 2296, after Fallout: New Vegas in 2281 and Fallout 4 in 2287.

Season 2 makes the connection to the games especially direct by moving into the Mojave Wasteland and New Vegas. That makes Fallout: New Vegas the most useful game for background, while still leaving some player-choice outcomes—especially the game’s final faction result—intentionally unresolved.

The confirmed Fallout timeline

The games and the television series share one canon. The show is not a remake of Fallout: New Vegas, a retelling of Fallout 4, or a separate continuity. It is an original story set in the same world, with its own protagonists and events.

Its main present-day story begins in 2296. That places Fallout Season 1 after every major game currently included in Bethesda’s published chronology: nine years after Fallout 4 and fifteen years after Fallout: New Vegas. Season 2 then brings the series into the Mojave Wasteland and New Vegas, making that game the show’s most direct point of contact with the games.

Fallout’s chronological order, from the Great War to the show

The years below are the relevant in-universe dates, not the games’ release dates. Fallout 76, for example, was released long after the original Fallout, but its story takes place much earlier.

Year Entry or event Region and importance
2077 The Great War A worldwide nuclear exchange destroys the old world. The show’s pre-war flashbacks, vault mythology, and corporate history all grow out of this event.
2102 onward Fallout 76 Appalachia, corresponding broadly to present-day West Virginia. It covers one of the earliest major post-war periods, when survivors begin rebuilding and new factions form.
2161 Fallout Southern California. The first game establishes the original West Coast setting, many foundational factions, and the series’ central themes.
2241 Fallout 2 Northern California. It expands the West Coast’s political history and develops the Enclave’s role.
2277 Fallout 3 The Capital Wasteland around Washington, D.C. It is a separate regional story, but its Brotherhood of Steel, vaults, technology, and post-war conflicts remain part of the same wider setting.
2281 Fallout: New Vegas The Mojave Wasteland. The NCR, Caesar’s Legion, Mr. House, the Strip, and the region’s competing political futures become especially important to Season 2.
2287 Fallout 4 The Commonwealth around Boston. It is the latest major game setting in Bethesda’s published chronology before the television story.
2296 Fallout Season 1 Greater Los Angeles and the surrounding wasteland. The show’s principal present-day plot begins here.
2296 and later Fallout Season 2 The Mojave Wasteland and New Vegas. The series revisits the location and institutions made famous by Fallout: New Vegas.

Bethesda’s official game chronology places Fallout 76 twenty-five years after the Great War, followed by the original Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout 3, New Vegas, and Fallout 4 in the years shown above. The television story continues that chronology rather than resetting it.

What it means for the show to be canon

Todd Howard has described the series as canon to the Fallout universe, and the production was developed as another entry in the franchise rather than as an adaptation of one existing game campaign. That distinction matters because the games are built around player choice. A player can support different factions, make different alliances, and produce different local outcomes.

The show therefore does not need to declare that every decision made by every player happened in exactly the same way. It can establish the larger history of the world, introduce new consequences, and revisit familiar regions while leaving some game-specific outcomes flexible.

Lucy MacLean, Maximus, and Cooper Howard, also known as the Ghoul, are not television versions of the player characters from the games. They are original characters whose stories take place inside the established setting. Their presence is one reason the show can be canonical without functioning as a filmed version of a game.

How Season 1 connects to the games

Season 1 uses the series’ established institutions, creatures, technologies, and historical conflicts instead of adapting a single quest line. Its connections include:

  • Vault-Tec and the vaults: the vaults are not simply shelters. Their experiments and corporate history are central to the franchise’s explanation of how the post-war world developed.
  • The Brotherhood of Steel: the show’s Brotherhood belongs to the same broad organization seen in the games, although the Brotherhood’s structure, priorities, and regional branches have never been identical everywhere.
  • The New California Republic: the NCR’s West Coast history links the series to the setting of the first two games and to New Vegas.
  • Ghouls: radiation, long-term survival, and the social consequences of becoming a ghoul are recurring Fallout concepts, not inventions created only for television.
  • Power armor: the technology and its military associations connect the show to the Brotherhood and to several game factions.
  • The Enclave, super mutants, deathclaws, and other wasteland threats: these reinforce that the series is operating inside the same post-war history and biological landscape.

The location is also significant. Season 1 takes place in Southern California, the original home of the first two games and the historical center of the NCR. The show is not merely borrowing the franchise’s visual style; it is returning to a region with established political and cultural history.

What happened to Shady Sands and the NCR?

Season 1 creates one of the most important continuity questions by showing the destruction and decline of Shady Sands. That city and the NCR were already major West Coast institutions in Fallout: New Vegas, which takes place in 2281. The show’s story is set in 2296, so the two facts can coexist: the NCR and Shady Sands existed in the game’s era, and major events changed the region before the television story.

The correct conclusion is not that New Vegas has been erased or moved into an alternate universe. The series establishes that a major transition occurred between the game’s Mojave storyline and the show’s West Coast present. What remains less fully explained is the exact chain of events, the political consequences for the NCR, and how every relevant faction responded.

That distinction is important when discussing dates connected to Shady Sands. The show raises questions about when particular events occurred, but its currently established canon does not provide a complete, universally settled political timeline for everything between New Vegas and Season 1. Treating one clue as a full explanation goes beyond what has been confirmed.

Why Season 2 is closely tied to New Vegas

Season 2 is the clearest bridge between the television series and one specific game. Bethesda identifies the Mojave as the setting of Fallout: New Vegas and directs viewers toward that game for background on the region’s factions, landmarks, technology, and conflicts.

  • Feel the Heat in New Vegas: Not even nuclear fallout could slow the hustle of Sin City. Explore the vast expanses of the desert wastelands from the small towns dotting the Mojave Wasteland to the bright lights of the New Vegas strip
  • Feuding Factions, Colorful Characters and a Host of Hostiles : A war is brewing between rival factions with consequences that will change the lives of all the inhabitants of New Vegas
  • New Systems : Enjoy new additions to Fallout: Special melee combat moves have been added to bring new meaning to the phrase "up close and personal"
  • An Arsenal of Shiny New Guns : With double the amount of weapons found in Fallout 3, you'll have more than enough new and exciting ways to deal with the threats of the wasteland and the locals
  • Let it Ride : In a huge, open world with unlimited options you can see the sights, choose sides, or go it alone. Peacemaker or Hard Case, House Rules, or the Wild Card, it's all in how you play the game

The direct connections include:

  • New Vegas and the Strip: the city remains a central location in the Mojave’s political and economic struggle.
  • Securitrons: the robots are one of the most recognizable pieces of New Vegas technology and history.
  • Mr. House: his influence and vision for the Strip are part of the political context Season 2 inherits.
  • The NCR and Caesar’s Legion: their conflict is one of the defining historical pressures behind New Vegas and the Mojave’s uncertain future.
  • The Mojave’s geography and creatures: the desert, settlements, hazards, and wildlife give Season 2 a regional identity distinct from Season 1’s Southern California setting.

In practical terms, Fallout: New Vegas is the game most closely connected to Season 2. It takes place in 2281, approximately fifteen years before the show’s 2296 Mojave storyline. Playing it can explain why the NCR, Caesar’s Legion, Mr. House, Yes Man, and the Strip matter, but it is not a prerequisite for understanding the television plot. Season 2 still follows its own characters and narrative.

If you want the closest playable context for the Mojave material, Fallout: New Vegas is the natural choice. Platform, edition, seller, and availability should be checked at the time of purchase rather than assumed from the game’s historical relevance.

Has the show chosen a canon New Vegas ending?

Not completely, based on the currently confirmed material. New Vegas is designed around competing outcomes. The player can support the NCR, Caesar’s Legion, Mr. House, or an independent path associated with Yes Man, among other choices that shape the Mojave.

The television continuity can show the later state of the region without declaring every individual player campaign to be the one universal version of history. Bethesda’s companion material discusses multiple New Vegas paths, including the House and Yes Man routes, rather than presenting a simple statement that one complete game ending is the only canon ending.

There may eventually be more explicit answers in the series or in a future game, but it is currently safer to separate two claims:

  • Confirmed: the Mojave, New Vegas, and the political history created by the game are relevant to the show.
  • Not fully confirmed: that the show has canonized every detail of the NCR, Legion, House, or independent ending.

Therefore, it is inaccurate to say that the show has made every other New Vegas ending non-canon. It is equally inaccurate to claim that the show has no relationship to the game’s outcome. The broad history matters; the exact player-selected resolution remains partly flexible.

Where Fallout 76 fits

Fallout 76 is the earliest major game setting in the official chronology. Its opening takes place in 2102, twenty-five years after the Great War, in Appalachia. That puts it far earlier than the show’s 2296 story.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its importance to the series is primarily historical and thematic rather than a direct plot connection. It shows an earlier stage of post-war society, when survivors are trying to rebuild, factions are taking shape, and the consequences of the bombs are still comparatively recent. It helps illustrate how the world can evolve over two centuries into the fractured societies seen in the television series.

You do not need to play Fallout 76 to understand Season 1 or Season 2. It is the best optional choice for someone interested in the earliest major post-war era rather than the story most directly connected to the show.

Where Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 fit

Fallout 3 takes place in 2277 in the Capital Wasteland around Washington, D.C. It is geographically separate from the show’s California and Mojave stories. Its events are still part of the same continuity, and its Brotherhood of Steel history, vault concepts, technology, and post-war institutions contribute to the wider setting.

Fallout 4 takes place in 2287 in the Commonwealth around Boston. It is also not a direct television prequel, but it is the most recent major game setting in Bethesda’s published chronology before the show begins. Its vault experimentation, settlements, power armor, ghouls, and Brotherhood conflict make it especially useful for viewers who want a modern introduction to the franchise’s recurring ideas.

  • Beyond the Wasteland: The world of New Vegas is more expansive than ever. Each new distinct area presents a fresh set of branching-quests, remarkable personalities and more chances to play the Savior or the Pariah to the natives of New Vegas.
  • Dead Money: Lured into a trap masquerading as the Sierra Madre Casino, you are thrown into a high stakes game where you'll have to work with three other lost souls if you want to survive.
  • Honest Hearts: An expedition into Utah's Zion National Park goes horribly wrong and you become embroiled in a war between tribes and put into a conflict between a New Canaanite missionary and the mysterious Burning Man.
  • Old World Blues: Transported to the Big MT research crater, you are enlisted by the Think Tank to save them from their own science experiments that have gone horribly out of control.
  • Lonesome Road: Ulysses, the original Courier Six, contacts you and promises to answer why he refused to deliver the Platinum Chip at the start of Fallout: New Vegas, but only if you make one last journey into the treacherous canyons of the Divide.

For a newer player who wants a contemporary open-world starting point, Fallout 4 is usually the most approachable recommendation among the main Bethesda-developed entries. It is not the best choice because it explains the show’s exact plot; it is the best choice because it presents many of the franchise’s core systems and themes in a modern format. As with New Vegas, current platform, edition, and compatibility details should be verified before purchase.

Which Fallout game should you play first?

Best direct match for the show: Fallout: New Vegas

Choose New Vegas if your main interest is Season 2, the Mojave, New Vegas itself, the Strip, Securitrons, Mr. House, the NCR, or Caesar’s Legion. It provides the richest background for the region the series revisits.

Best modern introduction: Fallout 4

Choose Fallout 4 if you want a newer open-world experience focused on vaults, power armor, settlements, ghouls, and the Brotherhood of Steel. It is a strong way to learn the franchise’s vocabulary without beginning with the oldest interfaces and systems.

Best chronological starting point: Fallout 76

Choose Fallout 76 if you want to begin closest to the Great War and follow the world’s development forward. The chronological sequence is Fallout 76, Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout 4, and then the television series.

Best West Coast history route

For the franchise’s historical foundations, play Fallout, then Fallout 2, then Fallout: New Vegas. Follow those with Fallout 3 and Fallout 4, optionally play Fallout 76 as an earlier-era side trip, and then watch the series.

This is not the only sensible order. The oldest games use different interfaces and design assumptions, and the chronology is not automatically the easiest way to experience the franchise. A practical route for most show viewers is New Vegas first for Season 2 context, or Fallout 4 first for a modern introduction.

What is confirmed, and what remains open?

Question Current answer
Is the television series canon? Yes. It exists within the same continuity as the games.
Is it an adaptation of one game? No. It is an original story with new protagonists and a new plot.
When does the show take place? The principal present-day story begins in 2296.
Does it come after Fallout 4? Yes. Fallout 4 is set in 2287, nine years before the show’s 2296 present.
Does it come after New Vegas? Yes. New Vegas is set in 2281, about fifteen years before the show’s Mojave storyline.
Does Season 2 take place in the Mojave? Yes. It directly engages with the setting and factions associated with New Vegas.
Has one complete New Vegas ending been confirmed as the universal canon? Not fully. The show can inherit the region’s history without resolving every player choice.
Did the show erase the first two games or New Vegas? No. Its West Coast events occur later and add to the existing history.
Is Fallout 76 a direct prequel to the show? It is much earlier chronologically, but its connection is primarily historical and thematic rather than a direct plot setup.

Common timeline mistakes to avoid

  • Calling the show a New Vegas remake: Season 2 revisits the Mojave, but its characters and plot are original.
  • Treating the show as a separate universe: Bethesda’s stated position is that the series is canon alongside the games.
  • Assuming every game choice must receive one definitive television answer: the games’ branching structure makes that unnecessarily broad. The show can confirm regional history while leaving some individual outcomes open.
  • Using the absence of the show from an older game-only timeline as evidence against canon: Bethesda’s earlier chronology pages predate the television series and list the game entries. They cannot, by themselves, establish that the later show is outside the universe.
  • Confusing release order with story order: Fallout 76 is a later-released game but the earliest major setting in the chronology.
  • Assuming that understanding the games is mandatory: the show is designed to work as an original story. Game knowledge adds context, especially for Season 2, but it is not required.

Where the series currently leaves the timeline

The durable answer is simple: Fallout Season 1 is a canonical continuation of the game universe in 2296, and Season 2 carries that continuity into the Mojave associated with New Vegas. The show acknowledges the history of the games without reproducing their campaigns or invalidating every possible player ending.

Season 2 consists of eight episodes in Prime Video’s listed regional schedule, released between December 16, 2025, and February 4, 2026. Its use of New Vegas landmarks and factions makes the 2281 game the most relevant preparation, but the television story remains accessible on its own.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Future episodes and games may clarify the fall of Shady Sands, the NCR’s later political condition, and the exact status of the Mojave’s competing powers. Until they do, the most accurate timeline is one that treats the show and games as connected canon while resisting the temptation to turn every unresolved game choice into a falsely definitive answer.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: the Fallout show is canon and takes place in 2296, after Fallout: New Vegas and Fallout 4. Season 2’s Mojave setting makes New Vegas the closest game connection, but the show is an original story and has not definitively selected one complete New Vegas ending for every player.
