Short answer: the RX 7900 XTX is the better deal for conventional rasterized gaming and 24GB of VRAM, while the RTX 4080 SUPER is the better high-end GPU for ray tracing, DLSS, frame generation, CUDA, AI, Blender, and many creator workloads. If both cost about the same, buy the RTX 4080 SUPER. If the Radeon is substantially cheaper and you mostly play without ray tracing, the RX 7900 XTX offers excellent performance per dollar.
Both launched at $999, but they are previous-generation cards by 2026. Their current value depends on remaining stock, used-market condition, and whether a newer RTX 50-series or Radeon RX 9000-series card is available for similar money.
The quick verdict
The RX 7900 XTX is usually the faster or equally fast card in traditional rasterized games, particularly at 4K, and its 24GB of VRAM gives it more room for large texture packs, mods, and some compute workloads. The RTX 4080 SUPER is the clearly stronger all-rounder once ray tracing, DLSS, frame generation, CUDA, Blender, or local AI enters the picture.
At the same price, the RTX 4080 SUPER is the safer recommendation for most high-end buyers because its ray-tracing performance and software ecosystem are substantially better. The RX 7900 XTX becomes the more compelling purchase when it is meaningfully cheaper and your priority is conventional gaming performance with 24GB of memory.

There is one important qualification: both cards are previous-generation products by 2026. Newer GeForce RTX 50-series and Radeon RX 9000-series cards have changed the performance and feature baseline, so neither older GPU should be purchased automatically at its original $999 price. Compare the actual price of a new or used card with current-generation alternatives before ordering.

Core counts are not a useful way to declare a winner. CUDA cores, stream processors, RT cores, and AI accelerators belong to different architectures and do not perform as interchangeable units. NVIDIA’s listed AI TOPS figure also should not be treated as a cross-vendor benchmark.
The Radeon has 50% more VRAM, a wider memory bus, and higher theoretical memory bandwidth. Those advantages can matter when a game or application approaches a memory limit, but they do not automatically make the RX 7900 XTX faster. The GeForce’s lower memory capacity is still sufficient for many current 1440p and 4K gaming situations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRasterized gaming: a close Radeon advantage
Rasterization is the conventional rendering method used by games that do not rely heavily on ray-traced lighting and reflections. It is the RX 7900 XTX’s strongest category.
In Tom’s Hardware’s current hierarchy, the RX 7900 XTX records 73.1% of the reference raster score at 1440p Ultra and 63.7% at 4K Ultra. The RTX 4080 SUPER records 70.9% and 62.6%, respectively. That works out to a small Radeon lead—roughly 2–3% in that test framework, not a generationally meaningful gap.
Earlier large-sample testing reached a similar conclusion. TechSpot’s comparison of the closely related RTX 4080 and RX 7900 XTX found the Radeon about 7% faster at 4K in its rasterized suite, while also treating differences of roughly 5% or less as effectively a tie. The RTX 4080 SUPER was about 2% faster than the original RTX 4080 in TechSpot’s testing, narrowing that comparison further.
These results should be read as near-tied performance with a possible modest Radeon lead, not as proof that the 7900 XTX wins every non-RT game. A particular game, API, driver, preset, CPU, or resolution can reverse the order. At 1440p, a fast CPU can also reduce the visible difference between these GPUs; at 4K, the graphics card is more likely to determine the result.

Ray tracing: a decisive win for NVIDIA
Ray tracing changes the comparison from close to one-sided. The RTX 4080 SUPER’s RT architecture is substantially more capable in tested games than the RX 7900 XTX’s ray accelerators, despite AMD having more dedicated units on the specification sheet.
Tom’s Hardware places the RTX 4080 SUPER at 68.9% of its 1440p Ultra ray-tracing reference score and 60.1% at 4K. Its direct comparison describes the GeForce as overwhelmingly faster than the RX 7900 XTX in ray-traced workloads. In independent testing of the related RTX 4080 versus RX 7900 XTX matchup, the GeForce was approximately 40% faster at 1440p and 42% faster at 4K in a ray-traced suite, with some individual games showing larger gaps.
The precise percentage depends on the engine and settings, but the buying conclusion is stable:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- If you enable ordinary ray-traced reflections, shadows, or global illumination often, the RTX 4080 SUPER retains much more performance.
- If you want demanding path-traced modes, the NVIDIA advantage becomes even more important.
- If you rarely use RT and disable it for higher frame rates, the Radeon returns to its rasterization-based value case.
Do not infer RT performance from the number of RT cores or ray accelerators alone. Hardware design, clock behavior, software, denoising, and the game engine all affect the result.
DLSS, FSR, and frame generation
The RTX 4080 SUPER supports NVIDIA’s RTX 40-series DLSS features, including Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction, and Frame Generation in games that implement them. Tensor cores and the card’s optical-flow hardware are part of that feature path.
The RX 7900 XTX supports AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution and Radeon Super Resolution. FSR’s vendor-agnostic approach is useful when a game supports it across several GPU brands, and it gives AMD a compatibility advantage in some mixed-hardware environments.
The practical comparison is not simply “DLSS works, FSR does not.” Both technologies depend on the game, mode, resolution, motion vectors, and implementation quality. In the evidence base used for this comparison, NVIDIA generally has the advantage in image quality, motion stability, and RT-focused reconstruction. AMD’s open and broadly compatible approach remains useful, particularly for games where the implementation is good or where the same upscaler must support multiple kinds of hardware.
Generated frames are not the same as rendered frames
Frame generation can increase the number of frames displayed on screen and make camera movement appear smoother, but generated frames do not provide the same input response as conventionally rendered frames. They should not be presented as a direct replacement for native-rendering benchmark results. Look for reviews that report the base rendered frame rate separately from the generated-frame result, and consider latency as well as the displayed FPS number.

For a buyer who specifically wants DLSS, Ray Reconstruction, or Frame Generation in supported titles, a GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER graphics card is the more appropriate choice. Check the individual game’s support and implementation rather than assuming every title benefits equally.
VRAM and long-term ownership
The RX 7900 XTX’s 24GB framebuffer is its clearest hardware advantage. Compared with the RTX 4080 SUPER’s 16GB, it provides more headroom for:
- 4K texture packs and heavily modded games;
- large open-world assets and high-resolution material data;
- professional scenes that fit poorly within a 16GB budget; and
- some local AI and compute workloads.
That extra capacity is an insurance policy, not a guarantee of longevity. VRAM helps only when the workload is constrained by memory capacity. In a game limited by ray-tracing throughput, shader performance, or software support, 24GB will not make the Radeon catch the GeForce. Conversely, a future title that exceeds 16GB under a specific texture or RT configuration could make the RTX 4080 SUPER stutter or require reduced settings while the Radeon continues normally.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The honest conclusion is conditional: 24GB makes the RX 7900 XTX more attractive to long-term owners who prioritize rasterized gaming, mods, and large assets, while the RTX 4080 SUPER’s stronger RT performance and software support may matter more to owners using those features regularly. Neither card should be described as future-proof.
Creator, AI, and streaming workloads
NVIDIA is the more defensible choice for CUDA-dependent applications, Blender, Stable Diffusion, and many AI-assisted creator workflows. In Tom’s direct comparison, the RTX 4080 SUPER led by roughly 89% in a 768×768 Stable Diffusion test and by 156% in Blender. Those are application-specific results, not a universal productivity multiplier, but they show why the GeForce is the safer purchase for common consumer AI and 3D workloads.
AMD can still win particular professional tests. The Radeon led in some SPECviewperf workloads, so anyone buying for a named professional application should check that application’s current benchmarks rather than extrapolating from Blender or Stable Diffusion.
Both cards support modern AV1 encoding for streaming and recording. The RTX 4080 SUPER has dual eighth-generation NVENC encoders and benefits from NVIDIA’s mature software ecosystem. The RX 7900 XTX is not missing modern encoding hardware, but CUDA support and application integration are broader across many creator tools.
For a creator who already knows that a program requires CUDA or has a strong NVIDIA performance profile, choose the RTX 4080 SUPER even if the Radeon offers slightly more raster performance. For ordinary game streaming, either card can provide a capable local encoding setup; the decision then returns to the game’s RT, upscaling, price, and VRAM requirements.
Power, cooling, and installation
The RTX 4080 SUPER has a 320W total graphics power rating, compared with 355W total board power for the RX 7900 XTX. The difference is meaningful but not enormous: both are large, high-end GPUs that need good case airflow and a properly connected power supply.

NVIDIA recommends a 750W system PSU for the RTX 4080 SUPER, while AMD recommends 800W for the RX 7900 XTX. These are vendor recommendations for reference designs; factory-overclocked partner cards, high-power CPUs, older PSUs, and the rest of the system can change the practical requirement. Verify the exact card’s manual before buying an 800W PC power supply or reusing an existing unit. A PSU should meet the card’s connector and quality requirements, not merely its wattage number.
Check the physical fit before ordering
- NVIDIA’s Founders Edition RTX 4080 SUPER is listed as a three-slot, 304mm-long and 137mm-wide card. Leave extra room for the power connector and its cable bend.
- AMD’s reference RX 7900 XTX is listed at 287mm long and 2.5 slots, but partner cards can be longer, thicker, and heavier.
- Measure the case’s GPU clearance with front fans, radiators, drive cages, and side panels installed.
- Check whether the PSU has the required native connector or the correct included adapter. Connector arrangements vary by model, so do not assume all RTX 4080 SUPER or RX 7900 XTX cards install identically.
- Use an anti-sag solution when the card’s weight or orientation warrants it. A GPU support bracket is an inexpensive option for a large partner card, but it is not required for every build.
- Confirm that the motherboard slot, case airflow, and CPU are appropriate for the resolution and frame rates you expect.
Neither card is a good fit for a cramped case with restricted intake airflow. A cooler, quieter partner model may also be preferable to the least expensive listing if the system will run demanding games or rendering jobs for long periods.
Display connections and high-refresh gaming
Both GPUs can drive high-resolution, high-refresh displays. NVIDIA specifies support up to 4K/240Hz or 8K/60Hz with Display Stream Compression and HDR, using DisplayPort and HDMI. AMD’s RX 7900 XTX adds DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR13.5 alongside HDMI 2.1a, giving it newer DisplayPort bandwidth potential.
That does not mean the Radeon will render every game at 4K and 240 frames per second. Output capability and game-rendering performance are separate issues. To benefit from DisplayPort 2.1, the monitor, cable, and GPU output mode must all support the relevant standard. If your target is a large 4K display, budget for a suitable 4K HDR gaming monitor only after confirming its refresh-rate requirements and the connection standards of the exact GPU model.
Price and value in 2026
Both cards launched at $999. The RX 7900 XTX arrived in December 2022, while NVIDIA announced the RTX 4080 SUPER on January 8, 2024, with availability beginning January 31 at a $999 starting price. Equal launch pricing made the RTX 4080 SUPER’s RT, DLSS, and creator advantages especially significant.
Remaining inventory and used-market pricing are now much more important than launch MSRP. A Tom’s Hardware comparison cited RX 7900 XTX listings around $899–$1,030 and RTX 4080 SUPER examples around $969–$1,000 or higher during its pricing check. Those figures are not a live quotation and should not be treated as a current guaranteed price; model, region, stock, warranty, and seller can change the value quickly.
Use a price-relative decision rather than an old MSRP-based verdict:
- Compare against newer GPUs first. If a current-generation card offers similar raster performance with better RT, newer reconstruction features, or a stronger warranty for similar money, it may be the better purchase.
- At roughly equal prices, favor NVIDIA. The RTX 4080 SUPER’s RT and software advantages are difficult to compensate for with the Radeon unless you specifically value 24GB.
- When the Radeon is meaningfully cheaper, calculate your actual use. A buyer who disables RT and does not need CUDA can turn the RX 7900 XTX’s raster performance and 24GB into a better value.
- Do not compare only the cheapest listing. Include the cooler, dimensions, return policy, warranty, PSU cost, and condition of a used card.
New versus used: what to inspect
A discounted used card can make either GPU more attractive, especially because both are no longer the newest products. It also adds risk that a new-card comparison does not have.
- Prefer a seller with a clear return period and verifiable warranty transfer rules.
- Inspect photographs for bent brackets, damaged connectors, corrosion, missing screws, and evidence of disassembly.
- Ask whether the card was used for sustained mining or operated at unusual temperatures.
- Confirm that all power adapters and accessories needed for the exact model are included.
- Test temperatures, fan behavior, stability, and performance under load during the return window.
A lower sticker price is not automatically a bargain if the card has no practical return route or requires a replacement cooler, cable, or power supply.

Driver and installation troubleshooting
Install the current official NVIDIA driver for the RTX 4080 SUPER or the current official AMD driver for the RX 7900 XTX first. A driver utility is not required to install either GPU and should not be presented as a way to increase benchmark FPS.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Also check the simple hardware causes: reseat the card, verify every power connection, make sure the monitor cable is connected to the GPU rather than the motherboard, confirm that the card is not pressed against a case obstruction, and watch temperatures and fan behavior under load. If the problem began immediately after changing drivers, rolling back to a known-stable official driver can be more useful than installing several automated utilities.
Which GPU should you buy?

How to interpret benchmark comparisons
Do not combine every percentage from different reviews into one precise average. GPU rankings change with the game selection, driver version, CPU, graphics API, resolution, upscaler mode, ray-tracing preset, and whether frame generation is enabled.
The most defensible overall reading is:
- Rasterization: near tie, with a small and sometimes measurable RX 7900 XTX lead, especially at 4K.
- Ray tracing: clear and sometimes very large RTX 4080 SUPER lead.
- Upscaling and frame generation: NVIDIA generally has the stronger image-quality and RT-oriented feature package, while AMD offers broader hardware compatibility through FSR.
- AI and creator work: NVIDIA is usually the safer choice for CUDA, Blender, Stable Diffusion, and many AI-assisted tools, although AMD can win particular professional workloads.
- Memory: RX 7900 XTX wins clearly with 24GB versus 16GB.
- Power: RTX 4080 SUPER has the lower reference rating, but exact partner-card behavior varies.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the RX 7900 XTX faster than the RTX 4080 SUPER?
The RX 7900 XTX can be slightly faster in traditional rasterized games, especially at 4K, but the difference is generally small and varies by game. The RTX 4080 SUPER is much faster in ray-traced workloads, so there is no universal overall winner.
Which card is better for 4K gaming?
Choose the RTX 4080 SUPER if you regularly use ray tracing, path tracing, DLSS, or Frame Generation. Choose the RX 7900 XTX for mostly rasterized 4K gaming when its 24GB of VRAM and lower purchase price matter more.
Is 16GB of VRAM enough on the RTX 4080 SUPER?
Sixteen gigabytes remains sufficient for many current 1440p and 4K games, but 24GB gives the RX 7900 XTX more headroom for high-resolution textures, mods, professional scenes, and some local AI workloads. More VRAM does not compensate for weaker ray-tracing performance or software support.
What size power supply do these GPUs need?
NVIDIA recommends a 750W system PSU for the RTX 4080 SUPER, while AMD recommends 800W for the RX 7900 XTX. Exact board-partner models, factory overclocks, the CPU, PSU quality, and connector requirements can change the practical choice, so verify the specific card before installation.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The RX 7900 XTX is the value-oriented raster and VRAM choice; the RTX 4080 SUPER is the feature-rich choice with much stronger ray tracing, DLSS, CUDA, AI, and creator support. At equal prices choose NVIDIA. Choose AMD when its discount is substantial and you primarily want conventional 4K gaming with 24GB of VRAM. In 2026, check newer alternatives before buying either previous-generation card.
