Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Windows 11 usually fails to recognize an Xbox controller for one of four reasons: the cable or port is bad, Bluetooth pairing has failed, a driver is damaged or outdated, or the controller itself needs to be isolated as the faulty device. Work through these six fixes from the least disruptive checks to driver and hardware diagnosis.
If Windows 11 does not recognize your Xbox controller, start by separating a connection problem from a Windows-driver problem: connect it directly with a known-good data cable, try another USB port, and check whether the controller appears in Device Manager or the Xbox Accessories app. For a wireless controller, remove the old Bluetooth pairing and pair it again. Only troubleshoot a particular game after Windows can see the controller.
Before you begin: identify the failure
| What you observe | Most useful next step |
|---|---|
| The controller has no lights or other sign of power | Charge it or replace the batteries, then retry the connection. |
| It powers on, but Windows says the USB device is not recognized | Try another data cable and USB port, then inspect the Device Manager error code. |
| It worked wirelessly before but no longer appears in Bluetooth | Remove the old Bluetooth entry and pair the controller again. |
| Windows or Xbox Accessories detects it, but one game does not | Check that game’s controller support, input mode, and per-game settings. |
| It is detected on another PC but not yours | Focus on your PC’s Bluetooth adapter, USB ports, Windows updates, and drivers. |
1. Check the cable, USB port, and hub
Disconnect the controller, wait a few seconds, and reconnect it directly to the Windows 11 computer. Do not use a hub or dock for this first test, especially an unpowered hub. Try a different USB port as well; desktop users should test both rear motherboard ports and front-panel ports where available.
Inspect the cable for cuts, bent connectors, or a loose fit. A USB-C connector does not automatically mean that a cable supports data: some USB-C cables are intended only for charging. Use a known-good USB-C cable that explicitly supports data or synchronization. This is a diagnostic replacement, not a guaranteed fix. If the controller works with the second cable, the original cable was likely charge-only or defective.
If the controller powers on but Windows displays “USB device not recognized,” do not assume immediately that the controller has failed. Windows may be reporting a problem with the device, its connection, or its driver. Open Device Manager and inspect the relevant device’s status and error code before trying random driver packages.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
If possible, test the controller and cable on another Windows PC. A controller that fails with multiple known-good cables and ports is more suspicious than one that works elsewhere. This comparison is a diagnostic inference, not proof that a particular component has failed.
2. Remove and re-pair the controller over Bluetooth
These steps apply only if your controller model supports Bluetooth and your PC has a working Bluetooth adapter. Xbox controller connection methods vary by generation, and not every controller supports every wireless method.
- Make sure the controller has sufficient battery power and keep it close to the PC.
- In Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices and confirm Bluetooth is turned on.
- Find the old or failed controller entry, select its menu, and choose Remove device if it is stuck or clearly represents the old pairing.
- Put the controller into Bluetooth pairing mode using its pairing button. The Xbox button should begin flashing when it is ready to pair.
- Choose Add device > Bluetooth, select the controller when it appears, and wait for Windows to complete pairing.
If it does not appear, turn Bluetooth off and on, restart the controller, move it closer to the PC, and try the pairing process again. You can also run the Bluetooth troubleshooter through the Get Help app in Windows 11.
A desktop PC may not include Bluetooth at all. Check Settings > Bluetooth & devices for the Bluetooth switch. If there is no usable adapter, a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter can add Bluetooth capability, but it cannot fix a defective controller or an incompatible controller model. An Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows is another possible connection path for compatible equipment, but its current model and availability should be verified before purchase.
3. Update, reinstall, or roll back the relevant drivers
Outdated, incompatible, or corrupted Bluetooth drivers can prevent pairing or cause a paired controller to disappear. They can also affect a USB controller or the PC’s USB hardware.
Update through Device Manager
- Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
- Expand Bluetooth and identify the PC’s Bluetooth adapter. Also inspect Human Interface Devices, Universal Serial Bus controllers, and any entry that names or appears to represent the controller.
- Right-click the relevant Bluetooth adapter and choose Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart the PC after the update attempt, even if Windows does not request a restart.
Then open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart again. Optional driver updates may appear under Advanced options > Optional updates; review them rather than installing unrelated packages indiscriminately.
Reinstall the adapter
If updating does not help, return to Device Manager, right-click the Bluetooth adapter, choose Uninstall device, confirm the action, and restart Windows. Windows will attempt to detect and reinstall the adapter. Before doing this on a laptop, make sure you can obtain the correct driver another way if Windows fails to reinstall it—for example, from the PC manufacturer’s official support page.

Consider a rollback
If Bluetooth worked until a recent Windows or driver update, open the adapter’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and check whether Roll Back Driver is available. Use rollback only when the timing fits and the button is enabled. Do not download drivers from random third-party driver sites; use Windows Update, the PC manufacturer, or the hardware manufacturer’s official support channel.
4. Read the exact Device Manager error code
A warning icon is more useful when you read the full status message instead of repeatedly reconnecting the controller. In Device Manager:
- Right-click the controller, Bluetooth adapter, or suspicious USB entry.
- Choose Properties.
- Read the message under Device status and record the exact Code.
Different codes point toward different remedies. Depending on the code, Windows may be saying that the device is not configured, lacks a driver, has a corrupted or missing driver, or cannot be found. Use the exact code when consulting Microsoft’s Device Manager guidance or the hardware manufacturer’s support documentation. “Device not working” is too vague to choose a reliable fix.
If no controller-related entry appears at all, check the physical connection first and expand the categories for hidden or generic USB and Bluetooth devices. If the Bluetooth adapter itself has a warning icon, repair that adapter before focusing on the controller. If the controller appears normally but a game cannot use it, move to the game-specific checks rather than repeatedly reinstalling Bluetooth.

5. Run Windows troubleshooting and install pending updates
Windows 11’s automated troubleshooting is worth running after confirming that the controller has power and that Bluetooth is enabled. Open the Get Help app from the Start menu, search for Bluetooth problems, and follow the guided troubleshooter. It may check the adapter, services, settings, and driver state.
Also check Settings > Windows Update for pending updates and restart after installation. The troubleshooter, Windows Update, and current hardware drivers address different parts of the problem; one does not replace the others.

For a wired USB-C controller that still produces “USB device not recognized,” return to Device Manager and use its specific error code to choose the next action. Avoid force-installing an unrelated Xbox or Bluetooth driver simply because the controller is missing from a game. A game cannot detect an input device that Windows has not successfully enumerated, and a game-specific driver is not a general solution to a USB connection failure.
6. Check Xbox Accessories and isolate the hardware
Install or open the official Xbox Accessories app for Windows and connect the controller. The app can detect compatible Xbox controllers and may offer a firmware update. If it detects the controller, follow the app’s instructions, allow the update to finish without disconnecting the device, and then test the controller again in Windows.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFirmware can improve performance or connectivity, but it is not a guaranteed repair. More importantly, the app must detect the controller before it can update it. If Windows cannot see the controller over a known-good data cable and USB port, an app-based firmware update is not the next step.
Use this isolation sequence:
- Connect the controller directly to the PC with a confirmed data cable.
- Try a second USB port.
- Open Xbox Accessories and check whether the controller appears.
- Test the controller on another Windows PC if one is available.
- If possible, test a second compatible controller on the original PC.
For example, if your controller works on another PC but a second controller also fails on your computer, your PC’s USB, Bluetooth, Windows, or driver configuration is the likely area to investigate. If neither PC detects the original controller but both detect another controller, the original controller or cable is more suspect. These tests narrow the possibilities; they do not by themselves prove which internal component has failed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Windows recognizes it, but one game does not
Do not confuse Windows recognition with in-game support. First confirm that the controller appears in Windows or in Xbox Accessories. If it does, the remaining fault may be inside the individual game: controller support may be disabled, the game may be using the wrong input mode, an overlay may be intercepting input, or the title may not support that controller layout.
Restart the game after connecting the controller, inspect its controller and input settings, and check whether it expects XInput, a different layout, or a specific platform configuration. If the controller works in Windows and other games, stop changing Bluetooth and Device Manager settings unless new evidence points back to Windows.

What not to do
- Do not assume every USB-C cable carries data.
- Do not conclude that the controller is dead solely because one USB port or one game cannot see it.
- Do not install random driver packages from third-party download sites.
- Do not force a firmware update when Xbox Accessories cannot detect the controller.
- Do not assume that a paid driver utility is required. Windows Update, Get Help, Device Manager, and official manufacturer support should come first.
- Do not treat a controller failure in one game as proof that Windows 11 does not recognize it.
Optional software tools: use caution
A third-party PC driver-diagnostic tool may be able to report driver or system issues, but it is optional and should come only after the built-in Windows procedures above. Verify the product’s current Windows 11 capabilities, pricing, privacy terms, and cancellation conditions before installing it. It is not endorsed by Microsoft here and cannot guarantee that Windows will recognize a physically damaged controller.
For this driver-focused use, an optional Outbyte Driver Updater scan can help identify outdated, corrupted, or missing drivers, but it cannot guarantee that Windows will recognize a physically damaged controller.
When replacement is reasonable
Consider replacing the cable first because it is inexpensive and easy to test. Consider replacing or repairing the controller only after it fails with multiple known-good data cables and ports, is not detected by Xbox Accessories, and fails on another PC—or after a second controller proves that the original device is the outlier.
An Xbox Wireless Controller for Windows 11 is most useful as a replacement or comparison device when hardware failure is plausible. It is not a guaranteed software fix, and compatibility still depends on the controller’s connection method and the PC’s USB or Bluetooth hardware.
Fastest recommended order
- Confirm the controller has power.
- Try a different USB port and a known-good data cable.
- Remove hubs and test another PC if available.
- For wireless use, confirm Bluetooth is present and enabled, then re-pair the controller.
- Run Bluetooth troubleshooting in Get Help.
- Update, reinstall, or—when appropriate—roll back the Bluetooth or device driver.
- Record and investigate the exact Device Manager error code.
- Use Xbox Accessories to check detection and firmware.
- Only after Windows recognizes the controller, troubleshoot the individual game.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the first thing to try when Windows 11 does not recognize an Xbox controller?
Start with a known-good USB data cable, a different USB port, and a direct connection without a hub. Then check Device Manager for the exact error code. If you use Bluetooth, remove the old pairing and pair the controller again.
Does “USB device not recognized” mean my Xbox controller is broken?
Not necessarily. A charge-only or defective USB-C cable, damaged port, Bluetooth-driver issue, or Windows configuration problem can all cause the same symptom. Test another data cable, port, and PC before replacing the controller.
Can I connect an Xbox controller to Windows 11 without a cable?
Yes, if the controller model supports Bluetooth and the PC has a working Bluetooth adapter. A desktop without Bluetooth needs a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter or another supported wireless connection method.
Can the Xbox Accessories app fix an Xbox controller that Windows cannot detect?
If Xbox Accessories detects the controller, firmware updates may be available. If the app cannot detect it over a known-good data cable and USB port, it cannot update the controller, so continue with hardware and Windows troubleshooting.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe Bottom Line
The most efficient fix is not a single driver download: test the connection first, re-pair Bluetooth when applicable, use Device Manager’s exact error code to guide driver work, and check Xbox Accessories before isolating the controller on another PC. If Windows detects the controller but one game does not, the problem is probably inside that game’s input configuration rather than Windows 11 recognition.
