Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The fastest safe approach is to update Assassin’s Creed Shadows, identify your platform and storefront, and classify the symptom before changing anything. Use the PC benchmark and graphics controls for stutter; use save-state preservation and precise reporting for crashes, blocked quests, missing content, and expansion problems. The latest official update identified for this guide is Title Update 1.1.11, released June 16, 2026, but its fixes do not prove that every remaining player report is resolved.
Below are conditional fixes and diagnostic tests—not promises that one reload, setting, or reinstall will work for everyone.
Start with three checks: install the latest title update available for your platform, restart the game and platform, then classify the symptom as a performance problem, crash, progression blocker, entitlement issue, or visual glitch. The correct fix depends on that distinction. A ray-tracing adjustment may help stutter, but it will not repair a quest state; reloading a save may help a quest issue, but it will not make an underpowered PC render at a higher frame rate.
Current Assassin’s Creed Shadows update status
The latest official update identified for this guide is Title Update 1.1.11, released on June 16, 2026. Ubisoft describes it as the game’s final major content update. It added the free Black Tides story content and included fixes involving quest progression, perks, combat behavior, missing content, and other gameplay systems.

That does not mean every report has been resolved. Ubisoft’s update history shows that different patches have addressed different types of problems over time, including crashes and stability, New Game Plus and expansion ownership, blocked quests, missing NPCs or items, skill-tree crashes, season transitions, and perk behavior. The release notes confirm fixes that Ubisoft chose to include in named updates; they are not a complete, live list of every unresolved player report.
Do this before trying a workaround
- Identify the platform and storefront. Assassin’s Creed Shadows is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Windows PC, Mac, and Amazon Luna. PC graphics instructions do not apply to consoles, Mac, or a cloud session in the same way. Also note whether the game is being run through Ubisoft Connect, another PC storefront, or a console account.
- Check the installed game version. Install the newest update offered by the platform before testing older workarounds. The title-update history contains stability, progression, quest, and content fixes, so a workaround that was useful before a patch may no longer be relevant.
- Restart the game and platform. Treat this as basic diagnostic housekeeping, not as a guaranteed Ubisoft fix. For Amazon Luna or another cloud session, start a fresh session as well.
- Write down the exact symptom. Record the platform, storefront, version, quest or activity name, expansion ownership, and the precise steps that reproduce the problem. “The game is broken” is much harder to diagnose than “the game crashes every time I open the skill tree after switching seasons.”
- Protect the affected save. If the issue involves a quest, missing reward, New Game Plus, or expansion access, do not overwrite the only save that shows the problem. Capture the state first and keep a backup or separate save where the platform allows it.
Quick diagnosis by symptom
| What you see | Start here | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Low frame rate or stutter | Use the PC benchmark, reduce ray tracing, and test upscaling or dynamic resolution. | That a new accessory or a reinstall will solve a performance limit. |
| Crash or freeze | Separate launch crashes from activity-specific crashes; update and record the last action before the crash. | That one file-verification or driver procedure applies identically to every platform. |
| Quest will not advance | Preserve the save, reload an earlier safe save if available, and document the objective text. | That fast travel, changing characters, or repeatedly performing the same objective will definitely repair the state. |
| Missing NPC, reward, item, or area | Check the quest stage, season, New Game Plus state, and expansion ownership. | That missing content automatically means the add-on license is missing. |
| Black screen, missing textures, or visual artifacts | Return to a baseline graphics preset, disable ray tracing, and compare the benchmark with the affected scene. | That one graphics feature has been proven to be the universal cause. |
Fix PC stutter and low frame rates
Assassin’s Creed Shadows has substantially different PC performance targets depending on resolution, frame-rate goal, preset, and ray-tracing mode. Ubisoft’s published configurations range from 1080p at 30 frames per second on low settings to 1440p at 60 fps or 4K at 60 fps at higher settings with considerably stronger hardware. These are target configurations, not a promise that every system will deliver the same result in every scene.
The published PC requirements list Windows 10 or 11, DirectX 12, 16 GB of dual-channel memory, and approximately 106 GB of SSD storage for the listed configurations. Meeting those figures does not guarantee a fixed frame rate: resolution, CPU load, ray tracing, background software, and the installed game version all affect the result.
A controlled tuning sequence
- Run the built-in benchmark. Record the result before changing settings. After each significant change, run it again. Changing ten settings at once may produce a better number, but it will not tell you which setting mattered.
- Lower ray tracing first. Shadows offers selective, standard, and extended ray-tracing modes. Extended ray tracing is the most demanding option. If the system struggles, turn ray tracing off temporarily or step down from extended to a less demanding mode before lowering every other setting.
- Enable a supported upscaler. Ubisoft documents DLSS 3.7, FSR 3.1, and XeSS 2, as well as dynamic resolution. Test the option supported by your hardware and compare image quality and frame-time consistency rather than judging only the average frame rate.
- Try dynamic resolution for a stable target. Dynamic resolution can work with the supported upscaling technologies to target a selected frame rate. It may be preferable to a fixed native resolution if consistent motion matters more to you than maintaining the same pixel count in every scene.
- Test frame generation separately. Ubisoft says players can combine one technology for upscaling with another for frame generation where the configuration supports it. Change one part of the setup at a time so you can tell whether the improvement comes from upscaling, frame generation, or both.
- Strip out background variables. Temporarily close overlays, background recording tools, and other nonessential software one at a time. This is a diagnostic test, not proof that every overlay causes Shadows to stutter. Re-enable tools individually after testing.
If the benchmark is acceptable but one location still stutters, record the area, weather or season if relevant, camera position, settings, and whether the problem happens repeatedly. If the benchmark itself is poor, focus first on resolution, ray tracing, upscaling, dynamic resolution, and the system’s published performance tier rather than quest-specific workarounds.
Handle crashes and freezes
First determine whether the failure happens at launch, during loading, in combat, in the hideout, while opening a menu such as the skill tree, or during a named quest. A repeatable activity-specific crash is more useful to report than a general statement that the game sometimes closes.

Safe first steps
- Install the current platform update for the game and restart the platform.
- Confirm that the PC meets the appropriate Ubisoft performance target, or that the console, Mac, or cloud session is running the current game build.
- On PC, temporarily reduce demanding settings, especially ray tracing, before testing the same activity again.
- Try a different save or a new test session only after preserving the affected save. This can help determine whether the crash follows the game generally or one save state.
- Write down the last action before the crash and whether it happens every time or only intermittently.
File verification, graphics-driver changes, and reinstalling can be reasonable escalation steps in some platform-specific support flows, but they are not universal guaranteed fixes. Use the instructions for the actual platform and storefront rather than applying a PC procedure to a console or cloud installation.
A specific New Game Plus and Awaji warning
Ubisoft’s update notes document a New Game Plus crash involving a save that had progressed through the Claws of Awaji storyline without the corresponding expansion ownership. If your crash matches that pattern, preserve the save and record the account, platform edition, add-on ownership, and exact progression state. Do not assume that buying or reinstalling unrelated content will repair the save, and do not overwrite it while experimenting.
Fix a blocked quest or missing progression
Quest problems need a save-state investigation, not a graphics-settings checklist. Ubisoft’s notes document fixes for interaction failures, missing rewards, NPC visibility, quest-objective updates, mission completion, and other progression conditions. A current patch may already address a particular quest, but the notes do not establish that every similar-looking problem has the same cause.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Stop at the blocked objective. Note the exact quest name and objective text. If the objective is not updating, avoid repeatedly advancing the same step or triggering unrelated transitions that could overwrite useful evidence.
- Reload an earlier save if one exists. Use a save made before the objective became blocked, and keep the affected save separately. A reload is a possible workaround, not a guaranteed fix.
- Check the state around the quest. Note the season, playable character, location, relevant NPC, New Game Plus status, and whether the quest is part of an expansion. A missing character or item can be caused by progression state, not only by an entitlement problem.
- Try only low-risk tests. Fast travel, switching characters, or restarting the activity may be useful diagnostic tests if they do not endanger the only affected save. Do not present any of them as a confirmed universal solution.
- Report it if the update and safe reload fail. Use Ubisoft’s bug reporter or Ubisoft Support and provide a reproducible description.
What to include in a useful report
- Platform and storefront
- Installed game version
- Quest, activity, or menu name
- Exact objective text and what the game does instead
- Whether the issue began after an update, season change, or add-on installation
- Expansion ownership, especially Claws of Awaji
- Whether the save is a standard save or New Game Plus
- The last action before the problem and numbered reproduction steps
- Whether an earlier save or a new test session reproduces it
- Short video or screenshots when they show the missing NPC, item, prompt, or objective state
Expansion and entitlement problems
When an area, quest, or item is unavailable, first establish whether it is actually an entitlement problem. The same symptom can result from a quest state, a patch mismatch, or a save-state error.
Check that the game is being launched with the same account, platform edition, and installed content used when the save was created. Confirm the relevant expansion is associated with that account and installed on that platform. If the issue remains, preserve the save and report the exact ownership and progression state rather than repeatedly loading and saving over it.

Black screens, missing textures, and visual glitches
Shadows exposes extensive PC rendering controls, including ray-traced global illumination and reflections, HDR, dynamic resolution, an in-game benchmark, and several upscaling and frame-generation technologies. Use those controls to isolate a rendering variable without claiming that the variable is necessarily the root cause.
- Restore a known baseline preset rather than troubleshooting from a heavily customized configuration.
- Disable ray tracing temporarily, including global illumination or reflections where those controls are separate.
- Test a supported upscaler. If available in your configuration, compare it with the game’s native temporal anti-aliasing option.
- Run the benchmark and compare it with the scene where the black screen, texture loss, or artifact occurs.
- Re-enable settings one at a time. Stop when the symptom returns and record the complete configuration, but label the result as a reproducible lead rather than a proven universal fix.
If the symptom occurs only in one quest or location while the benchmark is normal, include that scene and the exact trigger in a report. If it occurs across menus and unrelated activities, include the platform, display configuration, HDR status, and game version so support can separate a game-specific visual issue from a wider system or display problem.

| Label | Use it when | Example for Shadows |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed in update | A named Ubisoft release note explicitly lists the issue or issue class. | Updates have listed fixes across stability, quests, perks, combat behavior, missing content, NPCs, skill-tree crashes, season transitions, and New Game Plus or expansion interactions. |
| Possible workaround | A low-risk diagnostic step may isolate or bypass a problem, but success is not established for every player. | Reloading before a blocked objective, disabling ray tracing, or testing a different save. |
| Still needs reporting | The current build does not resolve the issue and no documented fix clearly matches it. | A reproducible quest blocker or crash that survives updating and a safe reload. |
| Unverified community report | Anecdotal reports exist but are not confirmed by Ubisoft’s official notes. | Do not describe such a report as a confirmed known issue without independent, reliable sourcing. |
Ubisoft’s official notes are the strongest evidence for what was fixed in a particular update. They should not be interpreted as a complete inventory of everything currently unresolved, and individual bug-reporter counts or statuses should not be presented unless they can be verified from a dependable current source.
A useful companion resource—not a technical fix
If the problem is “where do I go next?” or “which collectible, quest step, or activity am I missing?” rather than a crash or broken entitlement, the Assassin’s Creed Shadows official guide can serve as a physical reference for exploration, quests, and collectibles. It will not repair a crash, raise a PC’s frame rate, replace missing hardware, or fix an account ownership problem, so keep it separate from the troubleshooting steps above.
When to stop experimenting
Stop changing settings or replaying the same objective when you have a reproducible symptom, an affected save, and enough information to describe the failure. At that point, additional random workarounds can destroy useful evidence or overwrite the state support needs to inspect.

The most effective escalation report is specific: platform and storefront, game version, exact activity, expansion and New Game Plus status, last action, reproduction steps, frequency, and what happened after updating or loading an earlier safe save. That information gives Ubisoft Support or the bug reporter a path to investigate instead of another generic crash or missing-content report.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I reinstall Assassin’s Creed Shadows to fix a known issue?
Usually not as a first step. Reinstalling may be an escalation option in a platform-specific support procedure, but the research does not establish it as a universal fix for Shadows crashes, stutter, or quest blockers. Update the game, preserve affected saves, and collect reproducible details first.
Do I need a new graphics card to stop Shadows from stuttering?
Not necessarily. Ubisoft publishes different PC targets, from 1080p/30 at low settings to 1440p/60 or 4K/60 at higher settings. Use the benchmark, reduce ray tracing, and test supported upscaling or dynamic resolution before deciding that new hardware is required.
What should I do if a quest will not progress?
Treat it as a possible workaround only. Preserve the affected save, reload from before the blocked objective if possible, and record the exact quest stage. If the current update does not resolve it, submit the details to Ubisoft’s bug reporter or Support.
How do I troubleshoot a missing Claws of Awaji area or item?
Check the same account, platform edition, and installed add-on used by the save, then document the ownership and progression state. Be especially careful with New Game Plus saves that progressed through the Claws of Awaji storyline without the corresponding expansion ownership, a scenario Ubisoft has documented in its update notes.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Update first, identify the platform and symptom, and keep performance diagnosis separate from progression diagnosis. On PC, use the benchmark, lower ray tracing, and test supported upscaling or dynamic resolution one change at a time. For crashes, quest blocks, missing content, and expansion issues, preserve the affected save and report reproducible details through Ubisoft’s official channels. Title Update 1.1.11 fixed many documented issue classes, but it is not evidence that every remaining player report is resolved.
