Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo set up a gaming headset on Discord, connect it, open User Settings > Voice & Video, choose the headset microphone as Input Device, choose the headset speakers as Output Device, and run Let’s Check under Mic Test. Select Voice Activity or Push to Talk afterward, then troubleshoot permissions, mute controls, and connections if necessary.
The same basic setup applies to USB, 3.5mm, and wireless headsets, but the device names and available controls depend on the computer, browser, mobile device, and headset connection. Explicit device selection is safer than leaving Discord on Default.
Key takeaways
- Discord’s Input Device setting selects your headset microphone, while Output Device selects where other people’s voices play.
- Discord’s Mic Test is the fastest way to confirm that Discord receives your microphone and plays the recording through the selected headset.
- Voice Activity transmits automatically; Push to Talk is usually better when keyboard noise, background noise, or accidental transmissions are a problem.
- A headset can be connected correctly but still fail because of a physical mute switch, operating-system permission, loose USB or 3.5mm connection, incorrect system device, or missing driver.
- Krisp is optional: Discord says it is most useful for non-human background noise, and noise filtration can reduce voice quality in a quiet environment.
How to set up a gaming headset on Discord
To set up a gaming headset on Discord, connect the headset, open User Settings > Voice & Video, choose the headset microphone under Input Device, choose the headset speakers under Output Device, and run Let’s Check under Mic Test. Then select Voice Activity or Push to Talk and test the voice channel.
- Connect the headset. Plug in a wired headset securely through USB or 3.5mm, or pair a wireless headset with the computer and confirm that the operating system recognizes it. If a USB headset is not detected, try another USB port. A desktop with separate headphone and microphone jacks may require a 3.5mm headset splitter.
- Open Discord’s voice settings. In the desktop app or Discord in a browser, select the User Settings cogwheel and choose Voice & Video. Discord’s official Voice, Video, & Streaming Guide documents the current desktop and browser settings path.
- Select the headset microphone. In Input Device, select the headset’s microphone rather than assuming that Default is correct.
- Select the headset speakers. In Output Device, select the headset’s speakers or headphone output. The input and output may appear as separate devices, particularly with some USB, Bluetooth, wireless-dongle, and 3.5mm configurations.
- Run the microphone test. Find Mic Test and select Let’s Check. Speak normally, stop the test, and listen to the playback through the selected output device.
- Choose an input mode. Select Voice Activity for hands-free conversation or Push to Talk when you want Discord to transmit only while a chosen key is held.
If you still need hardware, a gaming headset with microphone is the most direct category to consider for Discord. Choose by connection type, operating-system compatibility, microphone controls, and whether the headset appears clearly as both an input and output device; no specific model is recommended or claimed to have been tested here.

What should Input Device and Output Device be set to?
Input Device should be the headset microphone, and Output Device should be the headset speakers. Input is the sound Discord receives from you. Output is the sound Discord sends to you from other users, notifications, and voice channels.
| Discord setting | What it controls | Correct headset selection | Typical symptom when wrong |
|---|---|---|---|
| Input Device | Your microphone signal | The headset microphone or headset mic name | Nobody can hear you, or Discord shows no input |
| Output Device | Other people’s voices and Discord audio | The headset speakers, headphones, or headset output | You cannot hear the voice channel |
| Input Mode | When Discord transmits your microphone | Voice Activity or Push to Talk | Your voice is not transmitted, or unwanted noise is sent |
| Input Sensitivity | How loud speech must be before transmission | Automatic, or a manually tuned threshold | Speech is clipped or background noise is transmitted |
Use Default only when the computer’s system input and output devices are already set to the headset. Explicitly selecting the headset in Discord removes one common source of confusion when the computer switches between a monitor, laptop microphone, USB headset, Bluetooth device, or another audio interface.
How do I test my headset microphone on Discord?
To test a headset microphone on Discord, open User Settings > Voice & Video, locate Mic Test, select Let’s Check, speak into the microphone, and listen to the playback through the selected output device. Discord describes the result this way: “Your voice will be played back to you through the selected output device, allowing you to check if your microphone is working properly.” Read the official Discord microphone-testing instructions for the test behavior.
A successful Mic Test confirms that Discord is receiving a signal from the selected input and routing the test playback to the selected output. The test does not prove that every voice channel is configured correctly: a channel can still restrict speaking, or the headset can still be physically muted.

Should I use Voice Activity or Push to Talk?
Use Voice Activity for convenient hands-free conversation and Push to Talk when you need tighter control over what Discord transmits. Voice Activity detects speech and sends the microphone signal automatically. Push to Talk sends audio only while you hold the assigned key.

| Mode | Best for | Advantages | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Voice Activity | Quiet rooms and casual conversation | No key needs to be held while speaking | Can transmit keyboard, fan, controller, or household noise |
| Push to Talk | Noisy rooms, shared spaces, and competitive play | Reduces accidental transmissions and background noise | You must hold the assigned key, and you can forget to press it |
Discord explains Voice Activity as follows: “Voice Activity allows you to just talk and transmit your voice through a mic without the need for pushing a hotkey.” Configure Push to Talk if automatic detection repeatedly sends unwanted sound, or if you want your microphone silent between callouts. Discord’s Voice Input Modes guide covers the mode choices and related sensitivity controls.
How should I adjust Discord microphone sensitivity?
If Voice Activity cuts off words or transmits background noise, disable automatic input sensitivity and adjust the threshold manually. Raise the threshold until idle room noise is not transmitted, then speak softly and confirm that the quietest parts of your speech still trigger the microphone.
A threshold set too high clips quiet speech or the beginning of sentences. A threshold set too low transmits fans, keyboard clicks, breathing, and other ambient noise. Make small changes and repeat the Mic Test after each adjustment. Push to Talk is often the simpler solution when the room’s noise level changes frequently.
Should I turn on Krisp noise suppression?
Turn on Krisp when non-human background noise is disrupting a call, but leave it off if your room is already quiet and your voice sounds better without filtration. Discord identifies dogs, vacuums, and doors as examples of non-human background noise and says, “Krisp works best in environments where there is a lot of non-human voice background noise.”
Krisp can be enabled in Voice & Video or from the in-call Noise Suppression control. Compare your voice with Krisp enabled and disabled. Discord’s Krisp FAQ specifically notes that filtration may reduce voice quality when a good microphone is being used in a quiet environment, so Krisp is not a universal audio-quality upgrade.

Why can’t I hear other people on Discord?
If you cannot hear other people on Discord, check the output device first, then check mute states, system volume, and individual-user volume.
- Return to User Settings > Voice & Video and set Output Device to the headset speakers.
- Confirm that the headset is not physically muted and that Discord is not deafened.
- Check the operating system’s playback device and volume mixer. Another application or a monitor can become the active output even when Discord remains open.
- If only one person is quiet, raise that person’s individual Discord volume in the voice channel or call. Discord supports per-user volume controls.
- Leave and rejoin the voice channel after correcting the device selection.
If music, notification sounds, or the Mic Test also play through the wrong device, the problem is probably output selection or the operating system’s audio routing rather than the voice channel itself. Discord’s voice and video troubleshooting guide provides the broader device and volume checks.

Why can’t anyone hear my headset microphone?
If nobody can hear you, verify Discord’s input selection and Mic Test before replacing the headset. A failed Mic Test points toward the headset, operating system, permission, connection, or driver; a successful Mic Test points more strongly toward mute state, voice-channel permissions, or input mode.
- Set Input Device to the headset microphone instead of Default.
- Run Mic Test > Let’s Check and watch or listen for a microphone signal.
- Check the headset’s physical mute button, inline control, or flip-to-mute boom position.
- Confirm that Discord and the operating system have permission to use the microphone.
- Check that the voice channel permits both Connect and Speak. Discord identifies these permissions as relevant to voice participation.
- Switch between Voice Activity and Push to Talk. If Push to Talk works but Voice Activity does not, tune input sensitivity rather than immediately assuming the microphone is broken.
What should I do if Discord does not detect the headset microphone?
If Discord does not detect the headset microphone, reseat the connection, check whether the operating system detects it, close applications that may be using the microphone, restart Discord and the computer, and then check audio drivers.
USB headset
- Unplug and reconnect the headset firmly.
- Try another available USB port, avoiding an unreliable hub when possible.
- Check whether the headset appears among the operating system’s recording devices.
- Close games, recording programs, meeting apps, and browser tabs that may be holding the microphone.
3.5mm headset
- Push the plug fully into the correct jack.
- On a desktop with separate headphone and microphone ports, use a compatible 3.5mm headset splitter.
- Check whether the computer exposes the headset microphone as an input device.
- Test the headset on another compatible input if available, without assuming that every phone, computer, console, or adapter supports the same wiring.
Wireless headset
- Confirm that the headset is powered on and paired with the computer.
- Check whether the wireless dongle or Bluetooth headset appears as an input and output device.
- Make sure the headset is not connected to a different nearby device.
- Charge the headset and reconnect it before changing Discord settings.
After the connection and permission checks, close other audio applications and restart Discord and the computer. Check for current operating-system and manufacturer audio drivers. Discord’s audio-input troubleshooting guidance includes port, software, and driver checks.

How do I fix a Discord headset mic that cuts out or sends noise?
Fix a cutting-out or noisy Discord headset microphone by manually tuning input sensitivity, trying Push to Talk, checking the physical microphone position, and comparing Krisp on and off.
- Speech is clipped: lower the manual sensitivity threshold or test Voice Activity after disabling automatic sensitivity. Speak softly as well as loudly to verify that quiet words are detected.
- Background noise is transmitted: raise the threshold above idle noise, move the microphone closer to your mouth, or use Push to Talk.
- Noise changes during play: use Push to Talk or enable Krisp if the noise is non-human and Krisp does not noticeably damage voice quality.
- Your voice is very quiet: check the operating system’s input volume, the headset’s inline controls, and the microphone’s position before changing Discord’s sensitivity.
How do I fix an echo on Discord?
To fix a Discord headset echo, use the headset instead of speakers, lower the playback volume, check for microphone bleed, and try Push to Talk or a higher input-sensitivity threshold.
- Use the headset speakers so the microphone does not capture room audio from external speakers.
- Lower headset volume if sound is leaking from the earcups into the microphone.
- Move the boom microphone closer to your mouth and away from the earcup speaker.
- Try Push to Talk to stop continuous room pickup.
- Increase the input-sensitivity threshold slightly and test again.
If only one participant hears an echo, ask that participant to check their speakers and microphone first; the echo may be entering the call from another person’s setup. Discord includes speaker, sensitivity, and Push to Talk checks in its official voice troubleshooting guide.

- Can you see the headset in the operating system? If no, reseat the plug, try another port, reconnect the wireless device, check permissions, and review operating-system or manufacturer drivers.
- Can Discord see the headset? If no, restart Discord after closing other audio applications, then use Reset Voice and Video Settings as a later step.
- Does Mic Test play your voice back? If no, focus on input selection, physical mute, permission, connection, and driver problems.
- Does Mic Test work but the channel does not? Check the channel’s Connect and Speak permissions, your mute state, and whether Push to Talk is waiting for its assigned key.
- Can you hear the channel but not one person? Check that person’s individual Discord volume before changing the headset.
- Is the microphone noisy or clipped? Tune sensitivity, try Push to Talk, and compare Krisp with Krisp disabled.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my Discord headset connected but not working?
A Discord headset can be connected but still fail because Discord may be using the wrong input or output device, the headset may be physically muted, the operating system may block microphone access, the voice channel may lack Speak permission, or the USB or 3.5mm connection may be loose. Select the devices explicitly, run Mic Test, and then check permissions and channel settings.
How do I test my headset mic on Discord?
Discord’s Mic Test is found in User Settings > Voice & Video on desktop and browser. Select Let’s Check, speak into the headset microphone, and listen to the playback through the selected output device. A successful playback confirms that Discord receives the microphone signal.
Should I use Voice Activity or Push to Talk on Discord?
Use Voice Activity for hands-free conversation in a quiet room. Use Push to Talk when keyboard noise, background noise, or accidental transmissions matter because Discord transmits only while the assigned key is held.
Why can Discord hear my mic in the app but not in a browser?
Browser Discord needs microphone permission from both the browser and the Discord website. Check the site permission first, then confirm that the correct microphone is selected in User Settings > Voice & Video.
The Bottom Line
The reliable Discord headset setup is explicit: select the headset microphone as Input Device, select the headset speakers as Output Device, run Let’s Check, and choose the input mode that suits your room. If the setup fails, check the physical mute, operating-system permission, connection, channel permissions, and drivers before buying replacement hardware.
