Our Mouse Control Tests: Click Latency

RTINGS click latency measures the delay from a physical mouse-button press to computer registration—not total input lag. Here is how the test works and how to read its results.

Click latency is the time between physically pressing a mouse button and the computer registering that click. RTINGS measures this delay with a USB protocol analyzer, averaging 205 clicks for each compatible connection type.

That result describes the mouse’s contribution to input delay—not the complete time from your hand movement to a visible change on screen. Game processing, rendering, display refresh, and monitor or TV input lag add separate delays. Click latency matters most in fast competitive games; for office work, browsing, turn-based games, and much casual play, comfort and reliability usually matter more.

What click latency measures

In RTINGS’ terminology, click latency is the elapsed time between a physical mouse-button press and the click being registered by the computer. The measurement ends at computer registration.

That makes it different from several related concepts:

  • Reaction time: the time your brain and muscles take to decide and perform an action.
  • Polling rate: how frequently the mouse reports information, especially cursor position. A higher polling rate can reduce reporting intervals, but it does not guarantee low click latency. RTINGS discusses polling rate separately in its sensor-specifications test methodology.
  • Debounce delay: filtering used to prevent one physical press from being interpreted as multiple clicks. Lower debounce settings can reduce delay, but may cause unintended double-clicks.
  • Display latency: the time added by the game, rendering pipeline, display refresh, and monitor or TV processing before you see the result.
  • Button feel: mechanical travel, force, and perceived snappiness. These affect how a click feels, but are not identical to the measured electronic delay.

The complete path is closer to:

Physical press → mouse switch and electronics → connection → computer registration → game processing → frame rendering → display scan-out and response

RTINGS’ click-latency result covers only the mouse-to-computer portion of that chain.

Why click latency matters—and when it does not

Lower click latency is generally preferable because it leaves less delay between an intentional press and the game receiving the input. The difference is most relevant in competitive shooters, rhythm games, fighting games, and other situations involving rapid fire, ability activation, or timing-sensitive actions.

It is much less important for browsing, office work, turn-based games, strategy games, simulations, and ordinary casual play. Even in competitive games, a low-latency mouse is not automatically the best mouse. Shape, comfort, weight, sensor behavior, button quality, wireless stability, battery life, and software can have a greater practical effect.

RTINGS also warns against overstating small score differences. A mouse rated 8.0 and another rated 9.7 may feel identical during actual gameplay. Treat large differences as more meaningful than tiny gaps, and judge latency alongside the rest of the mouse.

How RTINGS performs the test

RTINGS describes a laboratory setup built to trigger the mouse consistently and measure when the computer detects the resulting click. Its stated equipment includes:

  • A dedicated gaming PC.
  • A capture PC.
  • A Beagle 480 USB analyzer.
  • A metal connector attached to the left mouse button.
  • A solenoid mounted on a testing arm.
  • A custom breadboard controlled by a Teensy 4.0 development board.

For each connection under test, RTINGS uses the relevant signal path:

This is RTINGS’ stated test method, not a universal industry standard or the only valid way to measure latency. Different laboratories can report different numbers for the same mouse if they use a different trigger point, connection path, actuation definition, analyzer, or data-processing method.

Why the physical trigger matters

The solenoid presses the left mouse button through a metal connector placed directly on the button surface. As a result, the test includes the button’s pre-travel: the distance the button must move before its switch actuates.

That makes the test closer to a user-level physical click than a measurement that starts at the switch’s electrical contact. It can also make RTINGS’ result slightly higher than a manufacturer specification or another laboratory’s result that begins timing later in the button mechanism. A higher number is not automatically evidence that one test is defective; the systems may simply be measuring different parts of the click.

Sampling, exclusions, and averages

RTINGS collects 205 clicks for each compatible connection type. It discards the first five because they can occasionally be detected before the test officially begins. In rare cases, timed-out measurements may also be removed, leaving a final sample count slightly below 200.

The remaining readings are plotted to show variation and outliers, while the average is used for the reported latency result. Repeating the test matters because:

  • A single click can be atypical.
  • Wireless connections can occasionally produce spikes.
  • An average provides a useful central-performance figure.
  • The distribution can reveal inconsistency that the average alone hides.

When RTINGS provides a graph or distribution, inspect it rather than treating the average as the complete story. Two mice with similar averages may behave differently if one has a tight cluster of results and the other has occasional large spikes.

Which connection receives the score?

RTINGS tests every compatible connection type, but only the mouse’s Expected Connection Type contributes to the click-latency score.

  • Ultra-long battery life gives you up to 250 hours of continuous gaming on a single AA battery
  • Lightweight mechanical design and classic shape for maximum maneuverability, durability and comfort
  • Compact, portable design with convenient built-in storage for included USB wireless receiver

RTINGS defines this as the connection it expects most users to use most of the time. Depending on the model, it may be wired, wireless through a proprietary USB receiver, or Bluetooth.

This creates an important reading rule: do not rely only on the headline score. A mouse could have excellent wired latency but receive its score based on receiver wireless, or have a different Bluetooth result that does not affect the score. Open the individual measurements for the connection you actually plan to use.

How to interpret each connection type

Wired

Wired operation generally produces some of the lowest click-latency results because it avoids battery-saving behavior and the extra wireless link. RTINGS’ guidance identifies results below 10 ms as a good value for wired mice and flags results above 15 ms as potentially noticeable.

These are RTINGS’ rating thresholds, not universal limits of human perception. Whether a difference is noticeable depends on the game, display, frame rate, player, and total system latency.

The trade-off is physical: a cable removes battery management but can introduce drag or restrict movement.

Wireless through a USB receiver

Modern proprietary wireless systems can approach or match wired responsiveness, so “wireless” does not automatically mean slow. RTINGS likewise identifies below 10 ms as a good value for receiver-based wireless and marks results above 15 ms as potentially noticeable.

Receiver placement can affect real-world performance. An extender can position the receiver closer to the mouse, while hiding it behind a desktop PC, monitor, or other source of interference may produce a less reliable connection than the laboratory result suggests.

Receiver wireless avoids cable drag, but requires charging and depends on the receiver, battery state, firmware, and local radio environment.

Bluetooth

Bluetooth generally produces the highest latency of the three connection types. RTINGS’ guidance identifies below 20 ms as a good Bluetooth result, while also treating results above 15 ms as potentially noticeable.

Bluetooth is not unusable for every game. It is often adequate for productivity, browsing, compatible devices, battery conservation, and some casual gaming. However, RTINGS does not generally consider it the preferred connection for competitive play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bluetooth results are also less interchangeable across environments than the label suggests. The host adapter, operating system, firmware, interference, and implementation can all affect behavior. Not every mouse supports Bluetooth.

Important connection and configuration edge cases

Plugging in the charging cable may not create wired mode

Some wireless mice continue communicating wirelessly while their cable charges the battery. Do not assume that a cable attached to the mouse means it is using a true wired data connection. Verify the active mode in the manufacturer’s software or documentation before comparing it with a wired measurement.

Test settings may be faster than everyday settings

RTINGS tests using what it describes as optimal performance settings:

  • The highest available polling rate.
  • The lowest debounce setting supported by the mouse.
  • Power-saving features disabled.
  • High-performance or gaming modes enabled where available.

These choices make products easier to compare under optimized conditions, but they may not match a default or battery-conscious setup. Higher polling rates can increase CPU use and reduce wireless battery life. Disabling power saving can improve responsiveness while shortening runtime. The lowest debounce setting can reduce delay but may be unsuitable if it causes double-clicks.

Software labels and menu paths vary by manufacturer and model, so there is no universal settings path. Look for polling-rate, debounce, performance, sleep, idle, and power-saving controls in the mouse’s configuration application.

How to minimize mouse and system latency

  1. Use the highest practical polling rate. Start with the mouse’s maximum setting, then reduce it if CPU load, compatibility, or battery life becomes a problem.
  2. Lower debounce cautiously. Reduce the setting until responsiveness improves without introducing unintended double-clicks. Reliability is more important than saving a small amount of delay.
  3. Disable power-saving features for latency-sensitive sessions. Restore them when battery life matters more.
  4. Use wired mode or the proprietary USB receiver for competitive gaming. These are generally faster than Bluetooth.
  5. Place the receiver close to the mouse. Use an extender where appropriate, and avoid burying the receiver behind a PC or display.
  6. Use Bluetooth mainly for convenience, compatibility, productivity, or battery conservation. It can work for some games, but is generally the least suitable of these three modes for competitive play.
  7. Enable TV Game Mode when gaming on a television. This can reduce the TV’s display input lag. It does not change the mouse’s click-latency measurement, so treat it as a separate display-side improvement.

How much click latency is enough?

Use case What to prioritize How much the result usually matters
Competitive shooters and esports Connection actually used, low latency, consistent results, stable wireless behavior High; large gaps and spikes deserve attention
General gaming Comfort, sensor performance, button quality, and reliable connectivity Moderate; small differences may be difficult to notice
Office work and browsing Shape, comfort, battery life, compatibility, and Bluetooth convenience Low; Bluetooth is generally adequate
Turn-based and strategy games Usability and comfort Low

A low click-latency number cannot compensate for an uncomfortable shape, unreliable wireless connection, poor button design, or a display with high input lag. Conversely, a slightly slower result may be completely satisfactory if the mouse fits your hand and performs consistently.

Limitations readers should keep in mind

  • It is not total end-to-end latency. The result does not include game processing, rendering, frame timing, display scan-out, or monitor and TV input lag.
  • It is connection-specific. A result for Bluetooth does not describe receiver wireless, and vice versa.
  • Only one mode affects the score. The Expected Connection Type may not be the mode you personally choose.
  • It is an average. Outliers and occasional spikes may matter, especially in wireless use.
  • It uses optimized settings. Your polling rate, debounce, power-saving features, firmware, and performance mode may differ.
  • Other test rigs may produce different figures. Including button pre-travel is one reason RTINGS’ numbers may exceed specifications or measurements taken at the switch level.
  • Results can change with implementation. Firmware, software, host adapters, operating systems, and connection conditions can affect real-world performance.

The methodology page was updated on August 11, 2025. RTINGS also notes that a Test Bench 1.5.1 update removed the former video element from the demonstration.

A practical way to read an RTINGS result

  1. Identify the connection you will actually use.
  2. Open that connection’s individual latency result, not just the overall score.
  3. Compare the size of the gap. Treat a substantial difference more seriously than a small score variation.
  4. Check the graph for spikes or unusual spread when available.
  5. Consider your game type and total system latency.
  6. Balance the number against comfort, weight, shape, sensor quality, buttons, battery life, and wireless reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 1 ms mouse always better than a 5 ms mouse?

Not necessarily. The difference may be difficult to perceive, and RTINGS notes that even mice with noticeably different ratings can feel identical in practice. Connection stability, comfort, display latency, and the game itself also matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a higher polling rate guarantee lower click latency?

No. Polling rate concerns how often the mouse reports information, while click latency measures the delay from button actuation to computer registration. A high polling rate may reduce reporting intervals but cannot guarantee a fast click path.

Is Bluetooth unsuitable for gaming?

Bluetooth is generally slower than wired or proprietary receiver wireless and is less suitable for competitive gaming, but it can be adequate for casual games and ordinary use.

Why might RTINGS measure higher latency than a manufacturer claims?

RTINGS triggers the physical button surface and includes pre-travel before switch actuation. Another measurement may begin at a later electrical point, so the numbers may not represent identical portions of the click.

The Bottom Line

Use the RTINGS result for the connection you actually intend to use, inspect variation as well as the average, and treat the 10 ms, 15 ms, and 20 ms figures as RTINGS’ practical guidance—not universal perception laws. For competitive gaming, wired and proprietary receiver wireless are generally the strongest choices. For everyone else, a small latency difference rarely outweighs comfort, reliability, and fit.
