What Update 2.3 actually added
Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.3 added native AMD FSR 4 support on compatible AMD hardware. It also added FSR 3.1 Frame Generation and Intel XeSS 2.0, but these are separate features—not different names for the same technology.
FSR 4 is primarily the machine-learning upscaling option. Frame Generation creates additional displayed frames between conventionally rendered frames. You can use an upscaler without Frame Generation, and Update 2.3 allows Frame Generation to work with any upscaler. That distinction matters when troubleshooting: a ghosting problem, a frame-pacing problem, and a driver crash may have completely different causes.

CD Projekt Red also warned that the in-game FSR 4 option would not appear until AMD released a supporting driver. Consequently, the patch could be installed while FSR 4 was still unavailable on a player’s system.
Why AMD may call it something else
AMD’s current documentation increasingly uses FSR Upscaling or FSR Upscaling with ML Technologies rather than simply “FSR 4.” AMD also places the feature within its broader FSR “Redstone” branding. Depending on the game build and Adrenalin version, you may therefore see references to FSR 4, FSR Upscaling, ML-based upscaling, or FSR 4.1.
Those labels explain much of the confusion, but they do not mean every AMD Software toggle is equivalent to the game’s native setting. For Cyberpunk 2077, verify the actual selection under the game’s graphics settings rather than relying on an Adrenalin status message alone.

Compatibility has expanded since the initial rollout. The following reflects AMD’s current documentation and the driver-specific information available for this article; support can still vary by feature revision, driver, and game.

See AMD’s current FSR documentation for the latest terminology and hardware statement. Do not assume that every model in a generation behaves identically.
Which driver should you install?
There is no permanent single “FSR 4 driver.” The requirement changed during the rollout:

- Adrenalin 25.3.1 introduced FSR 4 functionality, initially describing it as exclusive to RX 9070-series cards.
- Later releases expanded hardware and game support.
- Adrenalin 26.6.2 lists FSR Upscaling 4.1 support for RX 7000-series cards.
Use the current stable Adrenalin release recommended for your GPU rather than hunting for the original launch driver. Download it from AMD’s official support page. Laptop owners should check whether their manufacturer requires an OEM driver instead; AMD’s release documentation notes that OEM packages can be preferable for system-specific compatibility.
Clean setup: the supported path
- Update Cyberpunk 2077 to Update 2.3 or a later version.
- Install a current AMD Adrenalin driver that supports FSR 4 or FSR Upscaling for your GPU.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Launch the game and open Settings → Graphics.
- Find the upscaling or resolution scaling control.
- Select the AMD FSR option exposed by your build. The label may say FSR 4, FSR Upscaling, or another AMD FSR name.
- Start with Quality, especially at 1440p or 4K.
- Leave Frame Generation off for the first test.
- Test a repeatable scene or the game’s benchmark and check both image quality and frame-time consistency.
- Only after the base configuration is stable, enable FSR 3.1 Frame Generation if you want it.
CD Projekt Red’s FSR 3 support guidance recommends approximately 60 FPS before enabling Frame Generation. That is guidance for Frame Generation—not a minimum requirement for FSR 4 upscaling itself.
What to do when FSR 4 is missing
The option is completely absent
Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm that the game is updated beyond the version that added FSR 4.
- Confirm that the AMD display driver—not merely the Adrenalin interface—was updated.
- Check that your GPU belongs to a currently supported generation.
- Restart Windows and relaunch the game after the driver installation.
- Consider whether Windows Update replaced the AMD driver.
- Remove or temporarily disable upscaler injectors, DLL replacements, and other graphics mods.
Then use this recovery sequence:
- Close the game and reboot.
- Verify the game files through Steam, GOG, or Epic.
- Reinstall the official AMD driver package.
- Test the unmodified game.
- If FSR 4 remains unavailable, use FSR 3.1 or XeSS instead of forcing an unsupported DLL.
For persistent preview-driver problems, AMD’s FSR technical-preview guidance recommends returning to a recommended Adrenalin release with AMD’s official detection and installation tools.
The option appears but is greyed out
Common causes include an unsupported GPU, a driver mismatch, an incompatible rendering combination, a modded configuration, or a driver-level feature that only becomes available when the game is detected correctly.
Return the game to its native AMD FSR option, restart the game, and test with Frame Generation and Path Tracing disabled. If the control remains unavailable, use FSR 3.1 or XeSS rather than treating a forced configuration as a supported fix.
AMD Software says FSR 4 is “inactive”
An “inactive” status in AMD Software does not necessarily prove that the game’s selected upscaler is broken. The overlay and the game may be referring to different implementation paths or labels.

Check the in-game upscaler selection, active resolution scale, and visible output. Compare native resolution with FSR and another upscaler, then restart the game after changing any driver-level toggle. The game’s graphics menu and the resulting image are more useful evidence than one overlay status indicator.
Separate upscaling, Frame Generation, and Path Tracing
Change one variable at a time. This matrix makes the results easier to interpret:

AMD release notes have documented intermittent Cyberpunk 2077 crashes on some RX 7000- and RX 9000-series products, as well as crashes or driver timeouts when loading saves with Path Tracing enabled in certain driver releases. That does not establish that FSR 4 is universally broken. If your game crashes, first disable Path Tracing and Frame Generation separately, then retest.
Why the image may look buggy
FSR 4 can be enabled while the result is still unsuitable for your resolution or settings. Look for:

- Shimmering on cables, fences, thin geometry, and neon signs.
- Crawling or unstable fine detail.
- Softness caused by Performance or Ultra Performance modes.
- Frame-Generation artifacts mistaken for upscaling artifacts.
- Worse-feeling frame pacing despite a higher FPS counter.
Use a controlled comparison: native resolution, FSR 4 or FSR Upscaling Quality, FSR 3.1 Quality, and XeSS where available. Test each with Frame Generation off, then compare Frame Generation separately. A higher displayed FPS number does not guarantee lower latency or smoother delivery.
When FSR 4 is worth using
FSR 4 is most useful when you have a supported Radeon card, are GPU-limited, and play at 1440p or 4K. It is particularly reasonable if FSR 3.1 produces distracting temporal artifacts and you want more performance without immediately cutting major graphics settings.

Leave it off when you are CPU-limited, play at a low output resolution, dislike the resulting shimmer or ghosting, or experience instability with the selected driver and Path Tracing combination. Native resolution with reduced ray-tracing settings can look better than aggressive Performance or Ultra Performance upscaling.

Frame Generation can increase the displayed FPS counter, but generated frames are not equivalent to frames rendered natively. Responsiveness still depends heavily on the underlying frame rate, and artifacts can become more obvious when the base rate is low.

Judge it by input response, frame-time consistency, and visible artifacts—not by the counter alone. If the game feels delayed or uneven, turn it off even if the reported FPS is higher.
Alternatives when FSR 4 is not the best choice
- FSR 3.1: A practical fallback when FSR 4 is unavailable or unstable.
- Intel XeSS 2.0: Added in Update 2.3 and worth comparing on your particular GPU and resolution.
- Native resolution: Often preferable when your system can maintain the desired frame rate after lowering ray-tracing settings.
- DLSS 4: Relevant to compatible NVIDIA hardware, not an equivalent option for AMD users. CD Projekt Red added DLSS 4 support for RTX 50-series cards in Patch 2.21.
Should you install an FSR 4 mod?
OptiScaler, DLL replacement, Proton environment variables, and other injection methods are advanced, unsupported alternatives. They can be useful to enthusiasts, but they complicate diagnosis and may break after a game or driver update.
Because Cyberpunk 2077 has native FSR support, troubleshoot the clean Update 2.3-or-later installation first. Do not make a random DLL replacement your first response to a missing menu option.
Should you buy a new GPU?
FSR 4 alone is not a sufficient reason to replace a capable RX 7000 card. Fix the driver and configuration first. Consider an upgrade only if your GPU is outside the currently supported class, cannot deliver the base frame rate you need, or you are seeking a broader performance improvement across your games.

AMD’s official Radeon product pages are the appropriate starting point for checking current models. Do not treat manufacturer performance figures as independent testing, and do not buy hardware as a guaranteed fix for a driver-specific crash.
