GeForce Experience has been replaced by the NVIDIA App. NVIDIA has migrated the older utility’s driver updates, game optimization, overlay, ShadowPlay recording, screenshots, performance statistics and filters into its newer app. Existing GeForce Experience installations may continue working temporarily, but NVIDIA is directing users to upgrade and warns that critical GeForce Experience web servers will be switched off in the near future. There is no published shutdown date, so the NVIDIA App is the correct choice for a new setup.
This guide explains the familiar GeForce Experience features using the current NVIDIA App, including how to install it, optimize games, update drivers, record gameplay, display FPS and troubleshoot common problems.
What GeForce Experience did
GeForce Experience was NVIDIA’s Windows companion utility for PCs and laptops with NVIDIA GeForce graphics. It helped users:
- Install and update NVIDIA display drivers.
- Apply NVIDIA’s recommended game settings.
- Open an in-game overlay.
- Record gameplay and save screenshots.
- Use Instant Replay to save moments that already happened.
- Display FPS, frame-time, temperature, utilization and latency statistics.
- Apply visual filters on supported games and hardware.
Those functions now appear primarily in the NVIDIA App. NVIDIA describes its recommendations as cloud-based Optimal Playable Settings intended to balance image quality and performance—not as guaranteed “best” settings for every player.

What you need before installing
- A Windows PC or laptop with a supported NVIDIA GeForce GPU.
- A current NVIDIA display driver.
- Free storage for driver packages, cached game data and recordings.
- Games installed in directories that the app can scan.
Feature support varies. DLSS, ray-traced filters, AV1 recording, HDR, Smooth Motion, automatic tuning and advanced Reflex statistics can depend on GPU generation, driver version, display, game and Windows configuration. Check NVIDIA’s support portal for current compatibility details.
Install the NVIDIA App and choose a driver
- Open NVIDIA’s official NVIDIA App download page.
- Download and run the installer.
- Open the app after installation.
- Sign in only when required for account-linked functions such as rewards or connected services. Many core driver, graphics and capture functions can be used without signing in.
- Open Drivers and select the driver branch that fits your work.
| Driver | Best fit |
|---|---|
| Game Ready Driver | Gaming-first users who want support for new games and gaming features. |
| Studio Driver | Users who primarily work in creative applications and prioritize production-oriented stability. |
NVIDIA says Game Ready Drivers are developed with game developers and tested across many hardware configurations. That is NVIDIA’s stated positioning, not a promise that every release will be trouble-free. Studio Drivers are not automatically bad for gaming, and Game Ready Drivers are not automatically unsuitable for creative work. The intended release focus is the key difference.
After installing a driver, restart Windows if requested. If an update causes problems, use Drivers → three-dot menu → Reinstall where that option and a previous driver are available.
Find or add your games
Open Graphics in the NVIDIA App. The app may detect installed games automatically, but it will not find every installation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Select the game if it appears.
- If it is missing, open the three-dot menu.
- Choose the option to add a program or scan an additional directory.
- Select the game’s actual executable or its installation folder.
- Refresh or reopen the app if necessary.
Adding a launcher is not always enough. Steam, Epic Games and other launchers can start a separate game executable, so select the executable that actually runs the game when possible.
Optimize a game safely
- Open Graphics.
- Select the game.
- Check the detected resolution and system information.
- Move the quality slider toward Performance or Quality.
- Click Optimize.
- Launch the game and test a demanding scene.
- Adjust individual settings manually if the result is too slow, too blurry or too latency-heavy.
Optimization is useful for beginners who want a sensible baseline, especially in games with many graphics options. It does not guarantee a particular FPS, remove a CPU bottleneck, fix overheating, add RAM or understand every personal preference. Competitive players may prefer lower latency and stable minimum FPS even when the NVIDIA recommendation favors image quality.

Use per-game settings whenever possible. Global changes under Graphics → Global Settings affect multiple games and can unintentionally change a configuration that was already working.
Settings worth adjusting manually
- Resolution and render scale: Lowering these usually has a direct performance effect, but image sharpness changes.
- Textures: Often affect VRAM usage more than raw GPU workload. Lower them if you see texture streaming problems or VRAM-related stutter.
- Shadows, ray tracing and reflections: Commonly expensive settings, although the exact cost varies by game engine.
- Upscaling such as DLSS: Can improve frame rate by rendering internally at a lower resolution, with image-quality trade-offs.
- Frame generation: Can increase displayed smoothness where supported, but it does not remove the input and rendering latency of the underlying base frame rate.
- NVIDIA Reflex: Primarily a system-latency feature, not a universal FPS booster.
- V-Sync and frame caps: Useful for controlling tearing, frame pacing and power use, depending on the display and game.
- Foliage, crowds and view distance: Can be particularly demanding on the CPU in some games.
There is no single universally correct setting. Change one or two options at a time, then compare the same in-game scene.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Open and configure the overlay
Press Alt+Z to open the NVIDIA overlay by default. Shortcuts can be changed in the app’s keyboard-shortcut settings, so treat these as defaults rather than permanent commands.
| Function | Default shortcut |
|---|---|
| Open overlay | Alt+Z |
| Toggle statistics | Alt+R |
| Start or stop manual recording | Alt+F9 |
| Save Instant Replay | Alt+F10 |
| Screenshot | Alt+F1 |
| Enable Instant Replay in NVIDIA’s documented workflow | Alt+Shift+F10 |
Older instructions often refer to the “Share” overlay or old GeForce Experience menus. The current NVIDIA App interface can use different labels and locations.
Show FPS and hardware statistics
- Press Alt+Z.
- Open Statistics.
- Choose or customize a statistics view.
- Enable the metrics you want.
- Use Alt+R to toggle the display during a game.
Depending on the selected view and hardware, the overlay can show FPS, 1% lows, GPU and CPU utilization, temperatures, latency, frame-time information and DLSS status.
- Average FPS: The overall frame-rate average.
- 1% low: A rough view of slower performance periods; useful for spotting stutter, but not a complete diagnosis.
- GPU utilization: High utilization often indicates a GPU-limited scenario.
- CPU utilization: Total CPU usage can hide a bottleneck on one heavily used CPU thread.
- Latency: Advanced measurements require compatible games and hardware.
- Temperature: Useful for monitoring heat, but temperature alone does not prove throttling.
Higher FPS and lower latency are related but not identical. Frame generation may make motion look smoother while base rendering and input latency remain important.

- Press Alt+Z.
- Open overlay settings and choose Video Capture.
- Set the Instant Replay duration.
- Enable Instant Replay.
- Press Alt+F10 during gameplay to save the recent segment.
Instant Replay continuously buffers recent gameplay and saves the configured period when you press the shortcut. NVIDIA uses 30 seconds as a default-style example, but the duration is configurable.
Confirm the save folder and leave adequate free space. High resolution, HDR, high frame rates and modern codecs can produce large files. Test microphone, desktop audio and webcam options before relying on a recording.
Record, screenshot and stream
Manual recording
Press Alt+F9 to start or stop recording. Under Alt+Z → Settings → Video Capture, configure the save location, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and codec. NVIDIA advertises capture up to 4K HDR at 120 FPS and up to 8K HDR at 30 FPS, but the practical maximum depends on the GPU, codec, game, display mode, driver and available storage.
Screenshots
Press Alt+F1 by default. Additional photo-mode or capture options may appear in the overlay for supported games.
Live broadcasting
Older NVIDIA documentation uses Alt+Z → Settings → Broadcast, followed by a service and broadcast configuration. Current NVIDIA App labels may differ, so treat that page as a legacy reference. For multiple scenes, browser sources, detailed audio routing or moderation controls, OBS Studio is usually the more capable option.
Use filters carefully
The overlay can provide color, contrast, sharpening, clarity and other visual filters. RTX systems may also receive AI-powered or RTX-related effects, depending on the game and driver.

Filters are not universally compatible. Anti-cheat systems, protected content and game-specific restrictions can make them unavailable. NVIDIA has documented overlay notifications when DRM prevents ShadowPlay recording. If a filter or capture option is missing, test the game without it rather than assuming the GPU is defective.
Should you enable automatic GPU tuning?
Automatic tuning is optional. On supported RTX desktop and laptop systems, the NVIDIA App performance panel can scan system behavior and create a tuning profile.
It may improve performance, but results depend on cooling, power limits and the individual GPU. It can also increase power use, heat and fan noise. Laptop users generally have less thermal headroom, and manufacturer power profiles can matter more than a small tuning adjustment.
After applying a tune, test the games and workloads you actually use. Restore defaults if you encounter crashes, visual corruption, driver resets or unusual temperatures.

Laptop performance or overlay behavior is inconsistent
A laptop GPU with the same model number as a desktop GPU does not necessarily perform the same. Hybrid graphics, Optimus display routing, battery operation, power mode and manufacturer thermal limits can affect performance and latency. Test while plugged in, with the intended performance profile enabled, and avoid applying desktop assumptions to a laptop.
NVIDIA App versus alternatives
