Yes—many original Nintendo Switch accessories still work with Nintendo Switch 2, but “compatible” often means wireless-only or use in TV mode. Keep the original Pro Controller, original Joy-Con if you use multiplayer or motion accessories, retro controllers, and the GameCube Controller Adapter. Do not plan to reuse the original Switch dock, original HDMI cable, or a conventional microSD card for Switch 2 game storage.
The biggest trap is original Joy-Con: they pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but they cannot attach to the console or charge from it. Nintendo Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025; the guidance below reflects Nintendo’s North American compatibility information. Nintendo’s official compatibility table is the controlling reference for named Nintendo accessories. It does not automatically establish compatibility for every third-party case, charger, dock, grip, capture device, or USB accessory.
Original Joy-Con work—but not like Joy-Con 2
Original Joy-Con can be paired wirelessly with Switch 2. That keeps them useful for local multiplayer, motion-control games, Ring Fit Adventure, Nintendo Switch Sports, and Switch games that require the original controllers.

They are not physically interchangeable with Joy-Con 2. Original Joy-Con cannot slide onto the Switch 2 console, so they cannot serve as attached handheld controllers. “Compatible” here means wireless controller compatibility, not handheld attachment.
How to pair original Joy-Con
- Open Switch 2’s controller-pairing interface.
- Press the SYNC button on the original Joy-Con.
- Follow the on-screen pairing prompt.
- Use the Joy-Con wirelessly after it appears as connected.
Menu wording and paths can change with system software, so consult Nintendo’s current support instructions if the labels on your console differ.
The original Joy-Con charging trap
Switch 2 cannot charge original Joy-Con. Because the controllers cannot attach to the console, there is no way to charge them through Switch 2 itself.
You can charge original Joy-Con by:
- attaching them to an original Nintendo Switch;
- inserting them into a compatible original Joy-Con charging grip; or
- using a compatible two-way Joy-Con charging stand.
If you still own an original Switch, you probably do not need to buy a separate charger. If you sold or gave away that console, check the model and generation of any charging grip or stand you kept. A product described as a “Joy-Con 2 charging grip” should not be assumed to charge original Joy-Con, and an original charging accessory should not be assumed to fit Joy-Con 2.

Yes. The original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is one of the safest accessories to reuse. Nintendo lists it as compatible with Switch 2: it can pair wirelessly and charge through a USB cable connected to the Switch 2 dock.

It remains a sensible controller for anyone who wants conventional wireless controls. You do not need to replace it merely because it predates Switch 2. A Switch 2-specific Pro Controller is an upgrade for people who want that newer model’s features—not a basic compatibility requirement. Do not attribute Switch 2-specific buttons, chat functions, audio features, or remapping capabilities to the original controller without checking the current official specification.
Nintendo Switch Online retro controllers
Nintendo lists the original NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, and SEGA Genesis controllers as compatible with Switch 2 when paired wirelessly. Their compatibility is tied to supported games; they should not be treated as universal gamepads for every Switch 2 title.
- NES Controller: charging requires an original Switch or compatible charging stand.
- SNES Controller: can charge through the Switch 2 dock by USB.
- Nintendo 64 Controller: can charge through the Switch 2 dock by USB.
- SEGA Genesis Control Pad: can charge through the Switch 2 dock by USB.
Whether a particular game recognizes one of these controllers is a separate question from whether Switch 2 can pair it.
GameCube Controller Adapter: usable in TV mode
The original Nintendo GameCube Controller Adapter can be connected to a USB port on the Switch 2 dock in TV mode. This does not guarantee that every game will recognize every connected GameCube controller configuration.
Keep separate the adapter, the individual GameCube controllers, and Nintendo’s newer Switch 2-specific GameCube controller. The adapter is listed as compatible; game-level support still determines what you can actually play.

Ring-Con, Sports accessories, wheels, grips, and straps
Several accessories marked “not compatible” with Switch 2 are still useful with original Switch Joy-Con. They are not compatible with Joy-Con 2 simply because they were designed around the original Joy-Con’s shape and connection points.
Fitness and motion accessories
- Ring-Con: usable with Ring Fit Adventure when original Joy-Con are connected wirelessly. Joy-Con 2 cannot be inserted into the Ring-Con.
- Leg strap: usable with Nintendo Switch Sports when original Joy-Con are connected wirelessly. It is not a Joy-Con 2 accessory.
- Joy-Con wheel: usable with original Joy-Con paired wirelessly, but not with Joy-Con 2.
This creates an important family-planning issue: selling your original Joy-Con while keeping Ring-Con or Sports accessories may leave those accessories with no practical Switch 2 setup.

The original Joy-Con grip, charging grip, wrist straps, AA battery pack, and two-way charging stand remain useful with original Joy-Con. They do not automatically become Joy-Con 2 accessories. Label them by generation before putting them into storage or selling them.
Dock, charger, HDMI, and storage
Original Switch dock: no
Nintendo says the original Switch dock is not compatible with Switch 2. It cannot replace the Switch 2 dock or serve as a second Switch 2 TV setup.
Original AC adapter: direct charging only
The original Switch AC adapter can directly charge a Switch 2 console when plugged into the console. It cannot power Switch 2 TV mode because its power output differs from what the Switch 2 dock requires.

- Charge Switch 2 directly: yes, according to Nintendo’s compatibility guidance.
- Power the Switch 2 dock for TV output: no.
Do not generalize this into a claim that the old adapter is suitable for every accessory or third-party dock.

Original HDMI cable: do not rely on it
The original Switch HDMI cable may look identical to the newer cable, but Nintendo says it is not compatible because the HDMI standards differ. Use the HDMI cable supplied with Switch 2 for TV output and performance.
Conventional microSD cards: not for Switch 2 game storage
Switch 2 is designed to use microSD Express cards for additional storage. A conventional microSD card from the original Switch cannot be reformatted into a Switch 2 game-storage card. The limitation is the card standard, not its capacity.
Existing conventional cards retain a narrower use: Nintendo says they can be used to view or import screenshots and videos captured on an original Switch. They cannot expand Switch 2’s game storage.
Nintendo’s specifications list 256 GB of internal Switch 2 storage and support for microSD Express cards up to 2 TB. An internet system update is required to use microSD Express cards. See the official Switch 2 specifications and announcement before buying a card, since product availability and supported models can change.

What you actually need to buy
Do not replace every accessory automatically. Match the purchase to the problem:
- Need attached handheld controls? Buy or retain Joy-Con 2. Original Joy-Con are wireless-only on Switch 2.
- Need to charge original Joy-Con without an original Switch? Use a compatible original Joy-Con charging grip or two-way stand.
- Need a second TV setup? Use a Switch 2-compatible dock and power arrangement. The original dock cannot be repurposed.
- Need more game storage? Buy a microSD Express card, not a conventional microSD card.
- Need TV output? Use the Switch 2 HDMI cable and compatible dock power supply.
- Need physical protection? Verify that a case, screen protector, shell, or grip was designed for Switch 2. Do not assume an original Switch fit.
- Already own a working Pro Controller? Keep it unless you specifically want the newer Switch 2 model’s functions.
For official accessory availability, consult Nintendo’s Switch 2 accessories page. Verify live prices, regional availability, and model numbers before purchasing.
A practical decision tree
- Does the accessory attach to the console? If it was shaped for original Joy-Con or the original Switch’s dimensions, assume it needs model-specific verification.
- Does it require original Joy-Con? Keep the accessory only if you are retaining original Joy-Con.
- Does it need special power output? The old AC adapter can directly charge Switch 2 but cannot run TV mode.
- Does it store games? Conventional microSD cards are not expansion storage for Switch 2; use microSD Express.
- Does it connect through the dock? Check whether it is listed for Switch 2 and whether the game supports it.
- Does the game itself support the setup? Accessory compatibility does not guarantee that every original Switch game is fully supported on Switch 2.
Nintendo notes that Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but some games may be unsupported or only partially compatible. Software support and accessory support must therefore be checked separately.
