BisectHosting is the best overall choice for most SCP: Secret Laboratory communities because it documents SCP-specific setup, EXILED integration, plugin support, automatic updates, backups, and multiple locations. Shockbyte is the strongest budget alternative, while Nodecraft suits administrators who value a polished control panel. Nitrado is better for short events and prepaid rentals; self-hosting or a VPS makes sense only when you want—and can manage—more control.

Prices and features change frequently. The commercial pricing signals below were observed on or around August 18, 2026, and should be confirmed at checkout. None of these providers is automatically endorsed by Northwood Studios.

Quick picks

Option Best for Observed price signal Player model Main strength Main drawback
BisectHosting Most communities Dynamic by slots, location, and term Configurable SCP-specific panel and EXILED workflow Final price is not a single fixed rate
Shockbyte Budget hosting $5.99 for 8 slots; $11.99 for 20; $17.92 for 32+ Slot-based Clear entry-level tiers Slot count does not reveal resource allocation
Nodecraft Easy administration and multiple games From $6.26/month shown Configuration-dependent Web panel and server-instance switching Exact configuration and billing terms need checking
Nitrado Events and prepaid rentals $4.09 for 10 slots/3 days; $16.19 for 10 slots/30 days 4–200 slots; 3–365 days shown Flexible rental duration Prepaid prices are not directly comparable with monthly subscriptions
Self-hosted dedicated server Technical owners wanting maximum control Hardware, power, and network costs vary Hardware-dependent No recurring game-host markup You handle everything
VPS or dedicated machine Advanced communities and multi-service setups Provider-dependent Resource-dependent Root access and custom infrastructure Compatibility and performance require verification

These are editorial recommendations based on documented features and buying models, not an official ranking. The four commercial providers should not be treated as identical products.

1. BisectHosting: best overall for most communities

BisectHosting is the most complete documented fit for an SCP:SL administrator who wants managed hosting without giving up plugin access. Its SCP-specific product page advertises full plugin support, EXILED integration, automatic updates, three days of free server backups, 21 international locations, and an instance manager.

#1 Best Overall
SCP Laboratory Idle: Secret
  • Tap or idle to earn money and science points!
  • Hire staff, upgrade your lab!
  • Research new technologies!
  • Pass story events!

The company’s SCP-specific beginner guide covers purchasing a plan, using the control panel, starting the server, and managing files. Pricing is selected dynamically according to player count, location, and billing cycle, so there is no reliable universal “monthly price” to quote without choosing those variables.

Plugin workflow

BisectHosting documents an EXILED workflow that lets you enable framework support and automatic updating from the Startup tab. The documented sequence is:

  1. Stop the server.
  2. Open Startup.
  3. Enable EXILED Framework Support and Auto Update.
  4. Start the server once, then stop it after startup completes.
  5. Open Files.
  6. Upload the plugin DLL to /home/container/.config/EXILED/Plugins.
  7. Start the server and inspect the console for errors.

See the documented EXILED installation procedure before installing a plugin.

Choose it if: you want guided SCP:SL setup, plugins, backups, and a conventional managed panel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Skip it if: your first priority is a fixed, easily compared price before selecting a region and slot count.

2. Shockbyte: best budget slot-based option

Shockbyte publishes unusually clear SCP:SL slot tiers. The observed page listed $5.99/month for 8 players, $11.99/month for 20 players, and $17.92/month for 32 or more players. Those figures are useful comparison points, but confirm the billing cycle, renewal price, location, taxes, and any promotion at checkout.

Its product page advertises plugin and EXILED support, automatic backups, DDoS protection, global locations, automatic updates, and 24/7 support. It also advertises a 72-hour self-serve refund and 99.9% uptime; those are provider claims, not independent performance measurements.

The straightforward slot model works well for a private group or a small community deciding between 8 and 20 players. It is less informative for administrators who need guaranteed CPU, memory, or process-priority details. A 32-slot plan is not automatically faster than a 20-slot plan, particularly when plugins and busy rounds increase server load.

Choose it if: you want an inexpensive, easy-to-understand starting tier.

Skip it if: resource allocation and independently verified performance matter more than a simple slot price.

3. Nodecraft: best control panel and multi-game flexibility

Nodecraft’s SCP:SL listing showed pricing from $6.26/month in the observed pricing feed. The exact plan configuration and billing conditions were not represented by that starting figure alone, so select the desired term, location, and capacity before comparing it with slot-based hosts.

Its advertised differentiators are administrative rather than SCP-specific: a web-based control panel, cloud storage for configurations and world data, server instances, and the ability to switch or preserve configurations between games. Nodecraft also advertises AMD Ryzen 9 and EPYC hardware. Those are product claims, not an independent benchmark of SCP:SL performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nodecraft documents joining through Servers → Direct Connect and shows port 7777 in its example. Your actual port may differ, so always copy the address and port displayed in the panel.

Choose it if: your administrators value a polished interface or your group plays several hosted games.

Skip it if: you want the lowest transparent slot price for one SCP:SL instance.

4. Nitrado: best for prepaid or short-term hosting

Nitrado’s model is useful when you need a server for an event, tournament, holiday, or temporary community. The observed offer displayed 10 slots for $4.09 for three days and 10 slots for $16.19 for 30 days, with configurable plans shown from 4 to 200 slots and 3 to 365 days.

Do not place the three-day price in a “monthly cost” comparison. Calculate the effective cost for the period you actually need, and check whether you are selecting prepaid or subscription billing. The final amount can also vary with region, taxes, discounts, and optional services.

The location selector displayed Frankfurt, London, New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Singapore, Tokyo, and Sydney among its choices. Availability can change, and the best region is the one closest to most of your players—not necessarily the cheapest location.

Choose it if: you need a defined rental period and do not want an open-ended recurring commitment.

Skip it if: you are running a long-term community and another host offers a better like-for-like monthly total.

5. Self-hosted dedicated server: best for maximum control

SCP:SL provides a separate dedicated-server application through Steam under App ID 996560; the game itself uses App ID 700330. The Steam EULA distinguishes the dedicated server from the player client.

Self-hosting can reduce recurring hosting markup and gives you control over the operating system, files, monitoring, plugins, firewall, and deployment process. It also makes you responsible for hardware, electricity, port forwarding, public IP changes, updates, backups, security, uptime, DDoS exposure, and troubleshooting.

A home machine can work for a few friends, but it is a poor default for a public community: dynamic IPs, limited upload bandwidth, power interruptions, network exposure, and lack of provider-level mitigation all become your problem. Northwood’s Official Server Requirements call for a decent dedicated server and do not consider home-hosted servers for Official Server status.

Choose it if: you already operate reliable always-on hardware and can administer it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Skip it if: you need a quick launch, support, automatic backups, or someone else to handle networking.

6. VPS or dedicated machine: best for advanced administrators

A VPS or rented dedicated machine is the flexible middle ground between a managed game host and owning hardware. It can provide root access, custom monitoring, automated deployments, multiple server instances, and other services on the same infrastructure.

It is not automatically cheaper or easier. Before buying, verify SCP:SL installation support, Windows or Linux compatibility, IPv4 availability, CPU model and dedicated-resource policy, bandwidth, DDoS protection, backups, firewall controls, and whether the terms permit game-server workloads. General VPS specifications are not enough to prove SCP:SL compatibility, so this option should be selected only after those details are confirmed.

Choose it if: you are comfortable managing operating systems, security, updates, logs, and automation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Skip it if: you want a game-specific panel and support for routine SCP:SL administration.

How many players do you need?

  • 4–10 players: a private friend group or occasional event. An 8-slot plan may be sufficient.
  • 10–20 players: a small community. Prioritize backups, plugin access, and a nearby location.
  • 20–32 players: a regular public server. CPU performance, restart controls, moderation tools, and recovery matter more than the advertised slot count.
  • 32+ players: a larger community or heavily customized server. Verify capacity, plugin compatibility, hardware allocation, and support before committing.

Slots describe how many players a plan permits; they do not guarantee performance. CPU speed, configuration, plugin load, game version, network routing, and actual activity during rounds all affect the result.

Dedicated server versus normal player hosting

A rented managed server, self-hosted machine, and VPS all run the dedicated-server application. They differ mainly in who supplies and administers the infrastructure:

Model Who manages the machine? Best use
Managed game host Provider handles the platform; you manage the server Most private and public communities
Self-hosted dedicated server You Technical owners with reliable hardware
VPS or dedicated rental You manage the software; provider supplies the machine Advanced infrastructure and multiple services
Player-hosted/non-dedicated session A player’s game and connection Casual temporary play, not a reliable public server

Plugins: LabAPI, EXILED, and compatibility

LabAPI is Northwood’s official server-side modding framework. The project states that current dedicated-server builds include a compiled LabAPI.dll. The LabAPI page showed release 1.1.5, dated January 12, 2026, when observed.

LabAPI and EXILED are not interchangeable labels. Before installing anything, ask:

  • Does the host support native LabAPI, EXILED, or both?
  • Can you upload DLL files manually?
  • Can you edit configuration files and read console logs?
  • Does the panel install or update the framework automatically?
  • Can you set custom startup arguments?
  • Must the server be stopped before installation?
  • Does the plugin explicitly support your installed SCP:SL and framework versions?

Framework releases can appear before the dedicated server has updated. The LabAPI project advises waiting for the official server update unless you are deliberately applying a compatible release. Installing a plugin or framework built for another version is a common cause of crashes.

Setup, joining, and essential settings

After the host provisions the instance, copy the IP address and port from its panel. In SCP:SL, open Servers → Direct Connect, enter that address, and connect. Port 7777 appears in Nodecraft’s example, but your provider may assign a different port. Once players are connected, BisectHosting documents the console command:

start

Important settings include the server name and description, maximum players, region, password, public-list visibility, friendly-fire and gameplay rules, administrator permissions, game and query ports, modded-server status, restart schedules, and update behavior. BisectHosting’s settings guide documents query_port_shift, which controls the shift between the game port and query port.

What to check before paying

  1. Compare like for like: use the same slot count, billing period, region, taxes, and add-ons.
  2. Read renewal terms: introductory discounts may not equal the renewal price.
  3. Confirm resources: ask what CPU, memory, storage, and process priority the plan receives.
  4. Check recovery: verify backup frequency, retention, downloads, and restoration steps. BisectHosting advertises three days of free backups; retention elsewhere should be checked individually.
  5. Test geography: choose the region nearest the majority of players and consider routing, not just the number of advertised locations.
  6. Confirm plugin access: identify the supported framework and whether DLL, config, log, and startup access are available.
  7. Check cancellation: record refund windows, prepaid expiry rules, taxes, setup fees, and dedicated-IP charges.

Troubleshooting common failures

A plugin breaks after an update

  1. Stop the server.
  2. Check the plugin and framework’s support for the current SCP:SL build.
  3. Remove or temporarily rename the newest plugin.
  4. Restart and inspect console logs.
  5. Restore a known-good backup if the server remains unstable.
  6. Do not replace LabAPI manually unless the release explicitly matches the installed dedicated-server version.

The server does not appear in the browser

Try Direct Connect first. Then check the game port, query port, query_port_shift, firewall, IPv4/IPv6 behavior, private/offline settings, console errors, and any provider networking issue. If Direct Connect works but listing does not, contact the host and check Northwood’s current server and community policies.

Players have high ping

Check whether the server region is appropriate, whether one player is the outlier, whether CPU or plugin load is creating performance warnings, and whether network routing is the problem. A long list of locations or a “low latency” marketing claim is not a substitute for testing from your players’ regions.

The server crashes or loses settings

Make a manual backup before updates, keep separate copies of plugin configurations, download important files, and maintain a test instance when possible. Confirm that the provider offers a documented restore process rather than merely advertising backups.

Official, verified, and commercial are different things

Renting from a commercial provider does not make a server Northwood Official or Verified. Northwood’s Official Server Requirements describe Official status as a quality certificate for Northwood-provided or approved community-hosted servers, with requirements involving an established community, moderation systems, prior verification, and suitable dedicated hosting. The Verified Server Rules and the June 10, 2026 Community Server Guidelines are separate policy references. Avoid calling any host “official” unless you are specifically discussing Northwood’s status system.

Which option should you choose?

  • Private group of up to about eight: Shockbyte’s 8-slot tier or a short Nitrado rental.
  • 10–20-player community: a managed host with plugin access, backups, and a nearby region; BisectHosting is the strongest documented fit.
  • 20–32+ regular players: prioritize CPU/resource details, location, backups, moderation tooling, and update recovery over the lowest slot price.
  • Temporary event: Nitrado’s prepaid duration model.
  • Technical owner with reliable hardware: self-hosting.
  • Advanced administrator running several services: a verified VPS or dedicated machine.
  • Public community: use a managed host or proper dedicated machine rather than relying on home hosting.

For most readers, start with BisectHosting if plugin convenience and documented SCP:SL workflows matter most. Choose Shockbyte when a clear low-cost slot tier is the deciding factor, Nodecraft when administration and multi-game flexibility matter, and Nitrado when the rental period itself is the priority.
