rcdll.dll is the Microsoft Resource Compiler DLL used by Windows development tools. When rcdll.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, the real problem is usually a damaged, incomplete, or incorrectly selected Windows SDK or Visual Studio installation.
This is not normally a general Windows runtime DLL that belongs in C:WindowsSystem32. It is associated with rc.exe, Microsoft’s Resource Compiler, which processes application resources such as icons, dialogs, menus, version information, and string tables.
The safest repair is to restore the Windows SDK or Visual Studio component that owns both rc.exe and rcdll.dll. Do not download the DLL from a random DLL website or copy it into System32.
Identify the error you are seeing
The fix depends on where the error appeared.
Visual Studio, MSBuild, CMake, or Qt error
You may see:
Cannot find the resource compiler DLL. Please make sure the path is correct.
This usually means that Visual Studio can no longer find the SDK copy of rcdll.dll. Common causes include:

- Antivirus software quarantined a legitimate SDK file.
- The SDK installation is incomplete or damaged.
Normal application startup error
Windows may instead display:
The program can't start because rcdll.dll is missing from your computer.
Other variants include:
The code execution cannot proceed because rcdll.dll was not found.
Error loading rcdll.dll. The specified module could not be found.
rcdll.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
A generic startup message does not prove that the application legitimately needs the Microsoft SDK. First identify which program requested the file and where Windows found, or failed to find, it.
Fix 1: Repair Visual Studio and add the Windows SDK
Time needed: 10–30 minutes, plus the download time
This is the most likely fix if the error occurs while building a C++ project, opening a resource editor, running MSBuild, or using CMake with Visual Studio.
Visual Studio invokes rc.exe during native Windows builds. The resource compiler depends on supporting files supplied with the Windows SDK and the installed C++ toolchain.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Repair the installation
- Close Visual Studio, MSBuild terminals, CMake, and related build tools.
- Open the Windows Start menu.
- Search for Visual Studio Installer and open it.
- Find your installed Visual Studio edition.
- Select More.
- Choose Modify.
- On the Workloads tab, select Desktop development with C++.
- Open the Individual components tab.
- Make sure an appropriate Windows SDK is selected.
- Make sure the MSVC C++ build tools component is selected.
- Select Modify to install missing components.
- After installation finishes, open Visual Studio and rebuild the project.
If the components already appear installed, select More, then Repair. Repair is useful when the files exist in the installer database but are missing or damaged on disk.
Microsoft’s component-selection procedure is documented in Modify Visual Studio workloads and components.
Check whether the repair worked
Open a Developer Command Prompt for Visual Studio and run:
where rc.exe
where rcdll.dll
A successful setup should return paths under a Windows SDK directory rather than an unrelated application folder. A typical layout resembles:
C:Program Files (x86)Windows Kits10bin<SDK-version>x86rcdll.dll
C:Program Files (x86)Windows Kits10bin<SDK-version>x64rcdll.dll
The exact SDK version and directory structure vary. Rebuild the project after opening a fresh Developer Command Prompt so that old environment variables are not reused.
Fix 2: Install or reinstall the standalone Windows SDK
Time needed: 10–30 minutes, plus the download time
Use this fix when Visual Studio is not installed, when a standalone build environment needs the Resource Compiler, or when repairing Visual Studio did not restore the files.
- Open Microsoft’s Windows SDK downloads page.
- Choose the SDK that matches your supported Windows and development environment.
- Download the installer from Microsoft.
- Run the installer.
- Accept the license terms.
- Keep the required SDK components selected.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart the build environment.
- Run the following commands:
where rc.exe
where rcdll.dll
You can also search the installed SDK folders with:

The Windows SDK is the normal owner of these resource-compiler files. Installing Visual C++ Redistributable does not normally restore them. The Redistributable is intended mainly for running applications built with Visual C++, while rcdll.dll supports the build and resource-compilation toolchain.
Fix 3: Correct an SDK path or architecture mismatch
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A valid rcdll.dll can be present on the computer while Visual Studio still reports that it cannot find the resource compiler DLL. This happens when the build is using a stale SDK path or the wrong architecture directory.
The SDK commonly has separate tool directories resembling:
Rank #2
- MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
...Windows Kits10bin<SDK-version>x86
...Windows Kits10bin<SDK-version>x64
The correct choice depends on the toolchain and build host. Do not copy an x64 DLL into an x86 tool directory or combine rc.exe from one SDK release with rcdll.dll from another.
Check the selected tools
From the relevant Developer Command Prompt, run:
where rc.exe
where rcdll.dll
Then inspect the build log for the exact path used to launch rc.exe and the exact location where it searches for rcdll.dll.
Also check whether the project has manually configured SDK or tool paths:
- Open the project in Visual Studio.
- Right-click the project and choose Properties.
- Check the selected Platform, such as Win32, x86, or x64.
- Check the Windows SDK selection under the project’s general or VC++ settings.
- Remove obsolete custom paths that point to an uninstalled SDK.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Open a new Developer Command Prompt and rebuild.
Repair Visual Studio before manually changing registry entries. Registry locations differ between Visual Studio and SDK generations, and editing the wrong entry can create another broken toolchain.
Fix 4: Reinstall the application that reports the error
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
If a normal program, utility, or game displays the error at startup, do not assume it should use a copy of rcdll.dll from the Windows SDK.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFirst determine whether the program’s own installation is damaged:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair or Reset, if those choices are provided.
- If repair is unavailable or ineffective, uninstall the program.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the program using its official installer or official distribution platform.
If the error began immediately after an update, use the application’s built-in file verification or repair feature before replacing any DLL manually.
A genuine Microsoft SDK file normally belongs in an SDK or Visual Studio toolchain directory. An application requesting a DLL from an unexpected location deserves additional scrutiny.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software can quarantine a legitimate SDK file, especially when development tools are installed in an unusual directory. Malware can also place a counterfeit rcdll.dll next to a legitimate rc.exe.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
rcdll.dll,rc.exe, Visual Studio, or the Windows SDK. - Do not restore the file solely because its filename is familiar.
- Check its full path.
- Restore it only if it came from a verified Microsoft SDK installation and the system scan is clean.
- Prefer repairing or reinstalling the SDK rather than restoring an uncertain file.
- Run a full Microsoft Defender scan.
A file named rcdll.dll is not automatically genuine. Treat copies found in temporary folders, download folders, random application directories, or unexpected system locations as suspicious. Check the file’s Properties dialog for a valid Microsoft digital signature and compare its location with the SDK selected by your build environment.
Do not whitelist a suspicious copy just to make an application start.
Fix 6: Repair Windows system components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
DISM and System File Checker are appropriate when other Windows components are also damaged, Windows Update is failing, or multiple Microsoft applications report missing or corrupt files. They are not a substitute for reinstalling a missing Windows SDK.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the affected build or application.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows files against that repaired component store. Microsoft documents this process in Repair a Windows image.
Repeating SFC without checking what changed usually will not restore a missing SDK installation. If the commands complete successfully but where rcdll.dll still returns nothing, repair Visual Studio or reinstall the Windows SDK.
When manually hunting through component versions and repeating DISM and SFC does not reveal what is wrong, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while repair is handled by the full version. It is optional, and repairing the owning Visual Studio or SDK installation remains the definitive fix for a missing development component.
Fix 7: Check related drivers only after a broader system change
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A graphics, chipset, storage, or motherboard driver does not normally provide rcdll.dll. Driver replacement is therefore not the first repair for this file.

regsvr32 is not a general-purpose DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer.
rcdll.dll is a compiler-support DLL, not an ordinary ActiveX control that should be registered. Running commands such as these is not the correct repair:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
regsvr32 rcdll.dll
regsvr32 C:WindowsSystem32rcdll.dll
They may produce an error without changing the underlying SDK path or installation problem. Microsoft explains the purpose and requirements of the command in its regsvr32 documentation.
Do not download a replacement DLL
Random DLL download sites pages create several problems:
- The file may contain malware.
- It may be the wrong architecture.
- It may come from an unrelated SDK release.
- It may lack a valid Microsoft signature.
- Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder can break other software.
- It does not repair the missing SDK registration, path, or toolchain.
Manual copying is reasonable only as a tightly controlled diagnostic test when rc.exe and rcdll.dll are copied together from the same verified Microsoft SDK version into a controlled build environment. Repairing or reinstalling the owning product is safer.
Common causes of the error
| Cause | What it means | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| Missing C++ workload | Visual Studio lacks native build tools or an SDK | Modify Visual Studio |
| Incomplete SDK installation | rc.exe or its supporting DLL is absent |
Repair or reinstall the SDK |
| Stale path | The build points to a removed SDK | Check the build log and Developer Command Prompt |
| Architecture mismatch | x86 and x64 tool directories were mixed | Use the matching SDK tools together |

| Corrupt Windows components | Other Microsoft files also fail | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Malicious same-name file | A counterfeit DLL is present | Isolate, scan, and investigate rather than whitelisting |
FAQ
Is rcdll.dll part of Windows 10 or Windows 11?
It is associated with Microsoft’s Windows development toolchain and carries the internal description Microsoft Resource Compiler DLL. It is primarily supplied through the Windows SDK and older Microsoft SDK or Visual Studio installations, not as a normal standalone runtime dependency in System32.
Where should rcdll.dll be located?
It normally appears beneath a Windows SDK tool directory, with separate x86 and x64 locations resembling:
C:Program Files (x86)Windows Kits10bin<SDK-version>x86
C:Program Files (x86)Windows Kits10bin<SDK-version>x64
Exact paths vary by SDK and Visual Studio release.
Why does rc.exe exist while rcdll.dll is missing?
An interrupted update, partial uninstall, antivirus quarantine, disk problem, or mixed SDK installation can remove the supporting DLL while leaving the executable. Repair or reinstall the matching SDK rather than copying a DLL from another release.
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable?
Not normally. The Redistributable is not the usual owner of rcdll.dll. Repair Visual Studio or install the Windows SDK instead.
Do I need .NET, DirectX, or a game runtime?
Those components are not the normal remedy for a Visual Studio Resource Compiler error. A program-specific reinstall may be appropriate if a particular application reports the error, but do not assume a generic game runtime will provide the Microsoft SDK file.

Use the architecture selected by the toolchain that launches rc.exe. Do not mix x86 and x64 files or combine files from unrelated SDK versions.
When should I use System Restore?
Use System Restore only when the file disappeared after a known recent system change and normal Visual Studio or SDK repair is unavailable. Product repair is more targeted and easier to undo.
What if the error continues after repair?
Run:
where rc.exe
where rcdll.dll
Then inspect the build log for the exact path being searched. Test from a fresh Developer Command Prompt, check project SDK settings, compare x86 and x64 configurations, and review antivirus quarantine. If only one Windows user profile is affected, compare its environment variables and Visual Studio configuration with a new profile.
