What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
setupnt.dll is missing because an older third-party Cirque touchpad program cannot find one of its own files. It is associated with Cirque Corp. setupNT and legacy GlidePoint, EasyCat, and SmartCat desktop touchpad software, not with Windows itself.
The safest repair is to identify the program requesting the file, then repair or reinstall that complete Cirque package. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website or copy one into System32 or SysWOW64.
What setupnt.dll is
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| File | setupnt.dll |
| Internal name | setupNT |
| Publisher association | Cirque Corp. |
| Likely software | Legacy Cirque GlidePoint, EasyCat, or SmartCat touchpad software |
| Windows component | No evidence indicates that it is part of Windows |
| Best repair | Reinstall or repair the parent Cirque software |
Historical file records identify setupnt.dll as part of Cirque Corp. setupNT. A legacy Cirque driver archive also places the file inside an EasyCat touchpad software directory. These records establish the likely product connection, but they do not provide a current official specification for the file’s version, hash, install path, or architecture.
Public listings also disagree about whether the file is 32-bit or 64-bit. Do not choose a replacement based on a website’s architecture label. The correct architecture is determined by the original application and installer.

Error messages you may see
The wording depends on which program loads the DLL and when Windows detects the problem:
- “The program can’t start because setupnt.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The file setupnt.dll is missing.”
- “setupnt.dll not found.”
- “Cannot find setupnt.dll.”
- “Error loading setupnt.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Failed to load setupnt.dll.”
- “setupnt.dll access violation.”
- “Cannot register setupnt.dll.”
“ The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that setupnt.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the requested DLL but failed to load a dependency that the DLL needs.
The first thing to determine is which application displays the error. If it appears while an old Cirque utility starts, the parent software is the primary repair target. If it appears during every boot after the touchpad was removed, an obsolete startup entry may be calling the file.
Before repairing: identify the caller
The filename alone is not enough. Record the application name, full error text, and any path shown in the message.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Check the shortcut
- Right-click the shortcut that produces the error.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the Target and Start in fields.
- Note the application folder.
If the target points to a Cirque, GlidePoint, EasyCat, or SmartCat utility, continue with the Cirque software repair. If it points to an unrelated program, do not assume that program legitimately shipped setupnt.dll; verify its installation folder and publisher first.
Check the startup entries
If the message appears immediately after signing in:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an old touchpad utility or an entry with a missing path.
- Right-click the entry and choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Disabling an orphaned startup entry can stop the error, but it does not repair the old application. If you still use the Cirque hardware, reinstall the correct software instead.
Check the file location
If a copy of setupnt.dll already exists:
- Press Windows + S.
- Search for
setupnt.dll. - Right-click the result and choose Open file location.
- Record the complete path.
- Right-click the file, select Properties, and inspect Details and Digital Signatures, if present.
A file in the original application’s directory is more consistent with a legitimate installation than a copy unexpectedly placed in a Windows system directory. A familiar filename does not prove that a file is safe. Scan unexpected copies and prefer reinstalling from trusted installation media.

This is the most likely solution when the error occurs while launching an old touchpad utility.
Uninstall the damaged package
- Press Windows + I.
- In Windows 11, select Apps, then Installed apps.
In Windows 10, select Apps, then Apps & features. - Search for entries containing Cirque, GlidePoint, EasyCat, SmartCat, or Touchpad.
- Select the relevant entry.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the removal wizard.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not require it.
Do not remove a currently working touchpad driver just because it contains the word “touchpad.” First confirm that the error’s application belongs to the old Cirque package.

- Convenient left and right physical clicks: The wired trackpad supports physical clicks of the left and right buttons at the bottom to realize the left and right mouse button functions. It also supports full-area single-click to realize the left mouse button function and two-finger single-tap for right mouse clicks, which is convenient for you to select text/documents and drag large areas easily
- How to drag files and select text: Double-click with one finger + hold/slide to drag files or select text

Fast and sensitive response, at your fingertips. Multiple functions, including smooth screen clicks, scrolling up and down pages, pinching to enlarge photos, etc.
- How to adjust the touchpad cursor speed: Open "Windows Settings" → "Bluetooth and other devices" → "Touchpad". Adjust the "Cursor Speed" slider to suit your preference (slower ← → faster)
Remove an obsolete device entry if necessary
If the old Cirque hardware is still connected:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Human Interface Devices, Mice and other pointing devices, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Identify the Cirque device by its name or by disconnecting and reconnecting the hardware.
- Right-click the confirmed device and select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device only when you are intentionally removing the obsolete package.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
Do not uninstall an unknown HID device merely because its name is generic. Removing the wrong device can disable another mouse, keyboard, touchscreen, or pointing device.
Install the complete package
Use the original Cirque installation disc, the device manufacturer’s official support package, or the official Cirque driver page. Search by the exact touchpad model rather than searching only for setupnt.dll.
Cirque’s current driver information identifies final GlidePoint releases for several older EasyCat and SmartCat desktop touchpads. That does not guarantee that a current package contains this historical DLL or works with every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation. If the hardware is designed for an obsolete Windows release, contact Cirque or the original hardware manufacturer for the correct historical installer.
- Download the complete driver or software package from a trusted official source.
- Right-click the installer and select Properties.
- If an Unblock checkbox appears on the General tab, select it and choose Apply.
- Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
- Follow the installation wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the application that originally produced the error.
The repair worked if the application opens without the missing-file message and the touchpad utility detects the expected device. If the same message returns, check whether the installer actually supports the Windows version and device model. Also check whether antivirus software removed the file during installation.
If you no longer use the Cirque hardware, uninstalling the obsolete application and disabling its orphaned startup entry is usually better than preserving an old driver.
Fix 2: check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may remove or quarantine a DLL after an update, cleanup operation, or detection. Do not immediately restore every item named setupnt.dll.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open any detection related to
setupnt.dll. - Inspect the file path, detection name, publisher information, and date shown by Windows Security.
- Compare the path with the known Cirque application’s installation directory.
Restore the file only when all of the following are true:
- The file came from the original Cirque installer or trusted installation media.
- The path belongs to the Cirque application you recognize.
- The detection is understood and the installation source is trusted.
- You are prepared to reinstall the complete package if Defender removes the file again.
If you are uncertain, do not choose Allow on device. Reinstall the complete official package instead. A proper reinstall restores the DLL together with its dependencies and gives antivirus software a complete installation context.
If Windows Security detects the file again after restoration, leave it quarantined and investigate the installer or file path. A file named setupnt.dll is not automatically legitimate merely because historical records associate that name with Cirque.
Fix 3: install updates and check driver compatibility
An old Cirque utility may fail because its driver package is incomplete or incompatible with the current Windows installation. Updating Windows will not necessarily recreate a third-party DLL, but it can resolve loader and compatibility problems.

Check Windows Update
On Windows 11:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when requested.
On Windows 10:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates and restart.
Then reinstall the correct Cirque package. Do not assume that Windows Update supplies the historical setupNT application.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the categories containing the Cirque device.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Record the provider, date, and version.
- Select Update Driver only if you have a compatible official package or Windows can locate a suitable driver.
- Restart Windows and test the utility.
A driver update is not a replacement for reinstalling the application that owns setupnt.dll. The DLL may belong to a setup or control utility rather than the low-level device driver.
When manually comparing drivers across an old device, Windows versions, and architectures becomes tedious, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan shows what it found, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the Cirque package remains the definitive fix when that package owns setupnt.dll.
Fix 4: determine whether a dependency is missing
Windows loads a DLL and then loads the other libraries it needs. If one of those dependencies is absent, the error may still mention setupnt.dll.
Look for a more specific error naming a file such as:
VCRUNTIME*.dllMSVCP*.dll- Another clearly identified Microsoft runtime file
Only install a Visual C++ Redistributable when the complete error or application documentation identifies that runtime as missing. setupnt.dll itself is not established as a Visual C++ runtime component, DirectX file, or .NET file.
If a Microsoft runtime is named:
- Note whether the affected application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Obtain the matching redistributable from Microsoft’s official Visual C++ documentation.
- Install it.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original application again.
Do not install multiple unrelated runtime packages merely because a DLL website recommends them. If no dependency is named, reinstall the parent Cirque software first.
Fix 5: use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after uninstalling a driver, restoring a backup, installing cleanup software, or changing the application.
Recommended Free Tools
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can revert system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs. It normally does not remove personal documents, but review the affected-program list before confirming.
After Windows starts, test the application. If the message returns, uninstall and reinstall the Cirque software rather than repeatedly restoring the system.
Fix 6: repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They are not the primary method for restoring a third-party Cirque DLL.

- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft documents this order because DISM repairs the Windows image and SFC checks protected system files afterward. If SFC reports that it repaired files, test Windows and then test the Cirque application. If the setupnt.dll error remains, reinstall the third-party package; SFC is not expected to restore it.
When repeated manual DISM and SFC runs make it difficult to determine what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows issues; its free scan shows findings, while repair is handled by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the Cirque application remains the definitive fix for a DLL that belongs to that application.

If the Cirque hardware and software are gone but the error appears at every boot, Windows may still be trying to launch an old component.
First check Task Manager:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable the confirmed obsolete Cirque or touchpad entry.
- Restart Windows.
Then check Task Scheduler:
- Press Windows + S.
- Search for Task Scheduler and open it.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks that mention Cirque, GlidePoint, EasyCat, SmartCat, or a removed application.
- Open a task and inspect its Actions tab.
- Disable only a task that clearly points to the obsolete program.
- Restart Windows.
Do not delete an entry simply because its name is unfamiliar. Record the task name and command first. If the hardware is still used, repair the software instead of disabling its startup process.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Do not download a standalone DLL
Random DLL download sites sites can provide malware, an incorrect version, the wrong architecture, or a file that does not match the parent application. Even a clean file may fail because the application also needs its registry entries, configuration, driver, or dependent libraries.
Use the complete Cirque installer, original installation media, or the original hardware manufacturer’s support package. Never treat a search result for setupnt.dll as proof that the download is authentic.
Do not copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64
System32 and SysWOW64 are not general-purpose DLL storage folders. A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows can require a 32-bit DLL in its own application directory, while a 64-bit application requires a different loading path. Public listings conflict about this file’s architecture, so copying a file based on a label is unsafe.
Let the original installer place the file where the application expects it.

Do not use registry cleaners
Registry cleaners cannot reliably reconstruct a missing application installation. They may remove startup or configuration data that an old utility still needs. Repair or remove the parent program instead.
Do not confuse setupnt.dll with setupnt.sys
setupnt.sys is a separate legacy driver filename. If the error identifies .sys rather than .dll, follow the driver and Device Manager path instead of copying a DLL.
Frequently asked questions
Is setupnt.dll a Windows system file?
No evidence supports that conclusion. The file is associated with third-party Cirque Corp. setupNT software and legacy touchpad utilities. It should not be treated like a protected Windows DLL.
What installed setupnt.dll?
The strongest identifiable connection is legacy Cirque GlidePoint software for EasyCat, SmartCat, and related desktop touchpads. The exact package depends on the hardware model and the original installer.
Is setupnt.dll safe?
The filename alone cannot establish safety. Check its full path, publisher, installation source, and antivirus status. A copy from a trusted original Cirque installation is more credible than an unexplained copy in a system folder, but scan unexpected files and reinstall when in doubt.
Is setupnt.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
Public records conflict, and no current official Cirque specification establishes the architecture. Use the installer intended for the application and device rather than selecting a file from a website.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Will Visual C++ fix the error?
Only if the complete error identifies a missing Visual C++ runtime such as VCRUNTIME*.dll or MSVCP*.dll. There is no evidence that setupnt.dll itself is a Visual C++ runtime file.
Should I run SFC or DISM?
Run them when Windows components are also failing or system corruption is suspected. They are not the primary repair for a missing third-party Cirque DLL.
What if the old touchpad is no longer connected?
Uninstall the obsolete Cirque software and disable its orphaned startup entry. Leaving a broken legacy utility installed can cause the error at every boot.
What information should I provide if the problem continues?
Record the exact error text, application name, full file path, Windows version, touchpad model, whether the error began after an uninstall or antivirus event, and any relevant Event Viewer entry. Those details identify whether the problem is a missing file, a missing dependency, an incompatible legacy package, or an orphaned startup command.
