Use the Xbox Accessories app to configure a supported Xbox One controller. You can remap buttons, create profiles, update firmware, adjust vibration, and—depending on the controller—configure paddles, stick response, trigger stops, or external accessibility devices.

The important limitation is that “completely configure” does not mean every controller exposes every setting. A standard Xbox Wireless Controller mainly supports platform-level button swaps, while Elite and Adaptive controllers provide substantially deeper customization.

Before you start

  • Update the Xbox One if a console update is available.
  • Turn on and connect the controller you want to configure.
  • Have a data-capable USB cable ready. A charge-only cable will not provide a reliable wired data connection.
  • Identify the controller model. Standard, Elite, Adaptive, and third-party controllers do not expose identical options.
  • Note any existing custom profiles before editing them.

For PC configuration, USB or the official Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows may expose options that are unavailable or less reliable over Bluetooth. Bluetooth behavior depends on the controller, firmware, Windows version, and Xbox Accessories support.

Open Xbox Accessories

  1. Turn on the Xbox One and sign in.
  2. Press the Xbox button.
  3. Open My games & apps or the app list.
  4. Launch Xbox Accessories.
  5. Select the connected controller, then choose Configure.

Microsoft’s support instructions cover the app-based configuration route: Xbox Accessories controller customization.

Older Xbox One documentation used paths such as Settings > Kinect & devices > Devices & accessories and Settings > Ease of access > Button mapping. Dashboard labels change, so Xbox Accessories is the more dependable starting point.

Update the controller first

If Xbox Accessories offers a firmware update, install it before diagnosing missing features or connection problems. Firmware updates can improve compatibility and may be required for some app functions, but an update does not necessarily add new customization options.

Keep the controller connected during the update. A wired connection is preferable, and you should not disconnect the cable, turn off the console, or interrupt the installation. Do not rely on a specific firmware number: versions change over time.

Remap a standard Xbox One controller

  1. In Xbox Accessories, select the controller and choose Configure.
  2. Choose New profile, or select an existing profile and choose Edit.
  3. Select the button or input you want to change.
  4. Choose the replacement function offered by the app.
  5. Name the profile, select Done or Save, and make it active.

Standard-controller remapping is not unrestricted many-to-one assignment. Microsoft’s original Xbox One implementation primarily used button swapping: assigning one button to another moved the original assignment back to the first button. For example, swapping LB and RB exchanges their functions rather than making both buttons perform the same action. See Microsoft’s explanation of standard Xbox controller button remapping.

Available inputs are determined by the controller and app. Face buttons, D-pad directions, bumpers, stick clicks, and some menu or trigger functions may be offered, but do not assume every input can be assigned on every model.

Platform-level remapping can affect multiple games. It also usually does not change a game’s on-screen prompts. A game may still display “Press A” according to its original layout even though the physical button now assigned to that action is different.

Create, activate, and switch profiles

Profiles let you keep separate layouts for an FPS, racing game, fighting game, accessibility setup, or different players. Use descriptive names such as FPS, Racing, or Left-handed.

  • Saved profile: a configuration retained for later use.
  • Active profile: the configuration currently applied to the controller.
  • Hardware profile switching: changing profiles with a physical controller button, where the model supports it.

Do not assume every standard Xbox One controller has a profile button or stores profiles in the same way. Elite controllers and the Xbox Adaptive Controller support more extensive profile workflows; Microsoft describes switching among three profiles on supported hardware, including the Adaptive Controller. See the Xbox Adaptive Controller product information.

Standard-controller mappings may not transfer automatically to another Xbox console. Portability and storage behavior vary by controller model, so treat profiles as model-dependent rather than universally portable.

Configure an Xbox Elite controller

An Xbox Elite Wireless Controller is designed for deeper customization than a standard controller. Depending on the Elite generation and firmware, Xbox Accessories can expose:

  • Rear paddle assignments.
  • Separate saved layouts for different games.
  • Stick sensitivity, tension, or response-curve settings.
  • Trigger-stop and trigger behavior.
  • Other controller-specific controls shown by the current app.

The Elite Wireless Controller Series 1 and Series 2 are not identical. The precise options, physical controls, and profile behavior depend on the generation, firmware, and app version. Microsoft’s Elite controller features guide describes the supported feature set.

Use paddles when you want to move actions away from the face buttons without removing access to the sticks. This can reduce thumb movement, but it also introduces more controls to learn and can cause accidental presses until the layout becomes familiar.

Configure an Xbox Adaptive Controller

The Xbox Adaptive Controller is intended for alternative input setups rather than ordinary cosmetic customization. It works with compatible external switches, buttons, joysticks, and other devices connected through its ports. Xbox Accessories can assign supported inputs and save profiles.

In the app, select the Adaptive Controller, configure the relevant controller input or connected port, assign the desired function, and save the profile. The physical arrangement should be planned around reach, grip strength, fatigue, simultaneous-input needs, and the user’s available switches—not only around button labels.

See Microsoft’s Adaptive Controller overview and input-device specification for supported connection details.

Change vibration and other available settings

Vibration is separate from button mapping. Xbox provides a controller vibration setting, and an individual game may provide its own vibration control. Both can affect what you feel during play. If vibration seems wrong, check the Xbox-level setting and the game’s audio, controller, or accessibility settings.

Xbox remapping versus in-game remapping

Need Best first choice
The same layout across many games Xbox Accessories
A different layout for one game The game’s own controller settings
Several physical layouts with paddles Elite controller profiles
External switches or alternative inputs Xbox Adaptive Controller
Two people sharing control Copilot
Stick inversion, dead zones, or game-specific sensitivity The game’s settings

Use Xbox Accessories when you need a consistent layout or when a game has poor remapping support. Prefer a game’s own settings when you need independent actions, accurate button prompts, one button assigned to multiple actions, axis inversion, dead-zone controls, or game-specific sensitivity.

Platform remapping and in-game remapping can conflict. A game may interpret the controller differently, apply its own layout on top, or ignore a platform-level change. If both systems are active, test them separately.

Accessibility options beyond button swaps

Button remapping is useful, but it cannot solve every physical or cognitive barrier. A player may need help with reach, grip strength, sustained trigger pressure, simultaneous inputs, analog movement, or fatigue.

  • Copilot: combines two controllers so they operate as one. A second player, caregiver, or assistant can help with input.
  • Xbox-level remapping: provides a consistent arrangement across games.
  • In-game remapping: can offer more complete per-action control and preserve accurate prompts.
  • Xbox Adaptive Controller: supports switches and alternative devices for setups where conventional controls are inaccessible.

Microsoft’s guidance on accessible controllers and other inputs and its accessibility guidance on remapping explain why games should also provide their own input and axis options.

Keyboard-to-controller mapping

Keyboard mapping is not a universal feature of all Xbox controllers. Microsoft announced controller-to-keyboard mapping for supported Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 and Xbox Adaptive Controller configurations. It also depends on whether the game accepts keyboard input, so it should not be treated as a guaranteed way to add keyboard commands to every Xbox title.

See Microsoft’s keyboard button-mapping announcement for the supported scope.

Test the configuration properly

  1. Test the active profile in the Xbox dashboard.
  2. Launch the target game and test movement, menus, triggers, stick clicks, and any remapped action.
  3. Check whether the game was already running when you changed the profile. Close and restart it if necessary.
  4. Compare the game’s prompts with the physical behavior; prompts may retain the original labels.
  5. Keep a navigation-safe profile that leaves A, B, Xbox, Menu, and View unchanged.

Fix common configuration problems

Xbox Accessories does not see the controller

  1. Turn the controller off and on.
  2. Reconnect it wirelessly.
  3. Use a data-capable USB cable and another USB port.
  4. Restart the Xbox One.
  5. Temporarily disconnect other controllers or accessories.
  6. Update the console.
  7. Try the controller on another supported Xbox or Windows device.
  8. Confirm that the model is supported by Xbox Accessories.

On PC, try USB or the official Xbox Wireless Adapter when Bluetooth does not expose the required configuration path. Bluetooth is not universally unsupported; results vary by controller, firmware, Windows version, and app capability.

The mapping works in the dashboard but not in a game

Confirm that the intended profile is active, then close and restart the game. Check for a game-specific remapping system and disable conflicting layouts. Some games display fixed prompts, read inputs differently, or ignore platform-level remaps. When a title offers detailed per-action remapping, it is usually the better place to configure that game.

Navigation now requires the wrong button

Changing A, B, Menu, or View can make the dashboard difficult to use. Use a second controller, reconnect the configured controller by USB, or return to Xbox Accessories and restore the default profile. A navigation-safe profile prevents this problem during future experiments.

A firmware update fails

Keep the controller wired, restart the console or PC, and retry with another USB cable or port. Do not repeatedly interrupt the installation. If the controller remains unusable, contact official Xbox support rather than installing unofficial firmware packages.

Changes do not carry to another Xbox

Do not assume a standard-controller mapping follows you. Microsoft’s original standard-controller announcement specifically noted that such remapping was not transferable between Xbox consoles. Elite and Adaptive profile behavior is different, so portability depends on the hardware and profile system.

Which controller is right for the job?

  • Standard Xbox Wireless Controller: best for ordinary play and basic platform-level swaps.
  • Elite Wireless Controller: worth considering when rear paddles, multiple layouts, stick or trigger tuning, and faster profile switching matter.
  • Xbox Adaptive Controller: the appropriate category when standard sticks, triggers, or face buttons are physically inaccessible and external devices are needed.
  • Third-party controller: support varies. Do not assume it exposes the same Xbox Accessories controls as Microsoft hardware.

Start with the free Xbox Accessories app before buying anything. Upgrade to an Elite controller for deeper physical and profile customization, or consider an Adaptive Controller when the requirement is alternative input hardware rather than a more premium conventional gamepad.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a regular Xbox One controller be remapped?

Yes. A supported standard controller can be configured in Xbox Accessories, but its remapping is generally based on one-to-one button swaps rather than unrestricted duplicate assignments.

Will a remapped controller change a game’s button prompts?

Usually not. The game may continue displaying its original prompts even when the physical input layout has changed.

Can I configure an Xbox controller on PC?

Yes, for supported controllers through Xbox Accessories on Windows. USB or the Xbox Wireless Adapter may work more reliably than Bluetooth for some configuration operations.

Can two controllers operate as one?

Yes. Xbox Copilot combines two controllers into one shared input device, which can help a second player, caregiver, or assistant provide input.
