Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf msdart.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair the affected application first when only one program fails, then use Windows Update, DISM, and SFC for a damaged Windows component. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website or run regsvr32 blindly, because this file is normally a Microsoft data-access component rather than a self-registering application DLL.
What this file actually does
msdart.dll is Microsoft’s OLE DB Runtime Routines library. It belongs to Microsoft Data Access Components, commonly abbreviated as MDAC, and to the later Windows Data Access Components included with Windows.
OLE DB is a Windows data-access technology used by software that connects to databases and other data sources. Legacy Visual Basic programs, database import tools, ODBC and OLE DB utilities, Access-related tools, installers, and older enterprise applications may depend on it. There is no universal list of programs that load msdart.dll; sometimes the error is caused by a dependent module rather than this file itself.
Microsoft documents that Windows Vista and later include Windows DAC as part of the operating system, while MDAC 2.8 was included with Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. See Microsoft’s Windows DAC and MDAC documentation.

This is not:
- A Visual C++ runtime
- A DirectX component
- A .NET assembly
- A hardware driver
- A general-purpose DLL that should be copied between computers
On a normal Windows installation, the file is stored in the Windows system directories. On 64-bit Windows, a 64-bit copy normally belongs in %windir%System32, while 32-bit system files are redirected through %windir%SysWOW64. The names are counterintuitive: System32 is the 64-bit system directory on 64-bit Windows, and SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. Microsoft explains this behavior in its file-system redirector documentation.
File versions depend on the Windows release, servicing level, architecture, and build. Public inventories include both 32-bit and 64-bit copies from different Windows generations, but those inventories are not a Microsoft compatibility table. Do not choose a replacement based only on a matching-looking version number or file size.
msdart.dll errors: symptom and likely cause
| What you see | What it usually points to | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| “The program can’t start because msdart.dll is missing” | Missing or damaged application or Windows component | Repair the affected application, then run DISM and SFC |
| “The code execution cannot proceed because msdart.dll was not found” | The program cannot resolve the file or one of its dependencies | Identify the failing program and check its architecture |
| “Error loading msdart.dll. The specified module could not be found” | msdart.dll may be present while another dependency is missing |
Repair the application and inspect its installation |
| “msdart.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error” | Wrong build, damaged file, architecture mismatch, or incompatible application | Run DISM and SFC; reinstall the affected program |
| “The procedure entry point could not be located” | The program expects an older or different API | Obtain a current installer or vendor compatibility guidance |
| “DllRegisterServer entry point was not found” | The DLL is not meant to be registered with regsvr32 |
Stop trying to register it and repair the application or Windows |
| Only one old program fails | Incomplete installation or obsolete MDAC expectation | Repair or reinstall that program |
| Several programs fail after Windows damage | Corrupted Windows component store or system files | Run Windows Update, DISM, then SFC |
| The error began after antivirus action | Possible quarantine or false positive | Check Protection History before restoring anything |
| The error began after migration to 64-bit Windows | 32-bit application or dependency mismatch | Confirm the program’s bitness and use its supported installer |
Before changing anything, note the exact executable named in the error. setup.exe, an old database utility, a Microsoft management tool, and a normal application can all require different repairs.
Fix 1: Repair the application that reports the error
When only one application fails, this is the safest and most likely fix. The application may have an incomplete installation, a missing private dependency, or an installer designed for an older MDAC layout.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Repair an installed application
On Windows 11:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair if the option is available.
- Start the program again.
The Repair option may not exist for every application. It normally preserves the program and its data, but follow any warning shown by Windows.
If Repair does not work:
- Back up the application’s documents, databases, profiles, and license information.
- Return to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the program’s three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download a new installer from the application’s publisher or use trusted installation media.
- Install the program again.
- Restart and test it.
For an older program, do not assume that installing MDAC 2.8 on Windows 10 or Windows 11 is the answer. Microsoft’s MDAC 2.8 SDK download is a developer kit for legacy systems, not a general missing-DLL repair package.
If the program is a game, use the launcher’s Verify, Scan and repair, or equivalent file-repair command before reinstalling the entire game.
Check whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit
A 32-bit process cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit process cannot use a 32-bit DLL as a substitute. Microsoft describes this limitation in its WOW64 documentation.

Useful clues include:
- A legacy Visual Basic application is commonly 32-bit.
- A program installed under
C:Program Files (x86)is commonly 32-bit. - A program installed under
C:Program Filesmay be 64-bit, though the folder alone is not conclusive. - A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows uses the 32-bit system view, including
SysWOW64.
Do not copy a DLL into both directories to see what happens. That can hide the real problem and make later servicing more difficult.
Fix 2: Install Windows updates, then run DISM and SFC
Use this path when Windows itself reports the error, several applications are affected, or the problem started after an interrupted update, system cleanup, disk failure, or Windows migration.
Install pending updates
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Return to Windows Update and check again until no further update is offered.
- Test the affected program.
Then repair the component store and protected system files.
Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the command to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Leave the elevated Command Prompt open.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which SFC uses as a repair source. Running SFC first can leave it without a reliable copy of the damaged file.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Run System File Checker
In the same administrator Command Prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows afterward and test the program.
A successful result means Windows repaired corrupted files. A result reporting no integrity violations means SFC did not find a protected-file problem. If SFC says it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and run SFC once more.
If DISM cannot find source files, correct Windows Update problems first. Microsoft also documents a matching installation-source form:
Rank #2
- MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows only with a source that matches the installed Windows edition and architecture. Do not point DISM at an arbitrary copied Windows folder.
If SFC still reports unrepaired files, the relevant diagnostic information is in:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
Do not replace msdart.dll manually merely because the log mentions it.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing which component is damaged can be tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it finds, while the repair action is handled by the full version; it is optional, and Microsoft’s built-in DISM and SFC remain the primary repair path.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus quarantine is possible, but do not assume it is the cause without evidence.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any entry that names
msdart.dll. - Check the original file path and detection details.
Restore or allow the file only after confirming that it is an authentic Microsoft file in the expected Windows directory and that the detection is a false positive. If the path is inside an unfamiliar temporary folder or application directory, do not restore it. Reinstall or repair the affected application instead.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined threat can expose the system again. Its Protection History guidance explains the available actions.
After dealing with the detection, run a full scan:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
Fix 4: Use System Restore after a known system change
System Restore is useful when the error appeared immediately after a driver, update, application removal, registry change, or failed legacy installer.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the result.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can remove applications, drivers, or updates installed after the selected restore point. Microsoft’s System Restore instructions explain the process.
If no suitable restore point exists, return to application repair and DISM/SFC rather than downloading the file separately.
Fix 5: Address driver or hardware-related changes carefully
msdart.dll is not a device driver, and updating a random driver is not a direct repair for this file. Driver work is relevant only when the failure began immediately after a hardware change, storage problem, or driver installation.
To inspect devices:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Storage controllers, IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, System devices, or the category named in the application’s documentation.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Device status message under the General tab.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Use Roll Back Driver only if the option is available and the problem began after that driver update.
- Otherwise select Update Driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
For a vendor-specific device, use the hardware manufacturer’s official support page rather than a random driver archive.
Finding the exact stale driver manually can mean checking several device categories and matching hardware IDs. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace repairing the application or Windows component.
Fix 6: Investigate legacy MDAC or installer compatibility
An old installer may expect an MDAC file layout or entry point that is not present on current Windows. In that situation, the file may exist and still fail because the program was built for a different operating system environment.
Try these steps:
- Visit the software publisher’s official support area.
- Look for a current installer or Windows 10/11 compatibility update.
- Uninstall the old application if its installation is incomplete.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current supported release.
- If the publisher provides compatibility instructions, follow those instructions exactly.
- Test the application under a supported legacy environment if the publisher requires one.
You can also try Windows compatibility settings for a program that used to work:
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose the Windows version recommended by the software publisher.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Start the program.
Compatibility mode cannot supply a missing Windows component or convert a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit DLL. If the program expects an obsolete API, the definitive fix may be a vendor update or a supported legacy environment.
Do not use Windows Features as a random MDAC installer
To inspect optional Windows components:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Features.
- Select Turn Windows features on or off.
- Review the available features.
- Do not enable unrelated features in the hope that they will install
msdart.dll. - Select Cancel unless the application’s official documentation specifically requires a listed feature.
Windows Features does not provide a universal MDAC repair control. Enabling random components can add complexity without addressing the failing program.

Why regsvr32 msdart.dll usually fails
regsvr32 is used for DLLs that expose the DllRegisterServer entry point. It is not a general command for repairing every DLL.
Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation describes the command’s purpose and syntax. Microsoft Q&A also records the specific result for this file: “DllRegisterServer entry point was not found.” See the Microsoft Q&A report.
That message does not mean the file is missing. It means the DLL is not a self-registering COM server of the type regsvr32 expects. Running both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of regsvr32 will not repair a damaged component, add a missing dependency, or solve an obsolete entry-point requirement.
Why manually downloading or copying the DLL is unsafe
Avoid DLL download sites websites and unsolicited replacement files. A manually copied file can be:
- The wrong Windows build
- The wrong architecture
- Modified or malicious
- Missing required dependencies
- In the wrong system directory
- In conflict with Windows servicing
- Unable to satisfy the application’s expected entry point
Even a genuine file copied from another Windows installation may not match the target system’s build and servicing level. The safer official sources are Windows Update, DISM and SFC, Windows recovery, and the affected application’s publisher.
If Windows 11 is still damaged
Windows 11 may offer a repair reinstall that preserves apps, files, and settings where supported:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- Restart and test the application.
If that option is unavailable, use Microsoft’s repair-reinstall guidance.
Final diagnostic checklist
If the error remains, record:
- The exact error text
- The executable that fails
- Whether one program or several programs are affected
- Whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The program’s installation path
- The result of DISM
- The result of SFC
- Any relevant Protection History entry
- Recent Windows, driver, antivirus, or application changes
- The application’s Event Viewer error, if present
To inspect the event:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error at the time the program failed.
- Record the application name and faulting module.
At that point, contact the application publisher with the details. If only one old program fails after Windows repairs successfully, the application is more likely obsolete or incompletely installed than Windows-wide damage.

Is msdart.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. It is the Microsoft Data Access OLE DB Runtime Routines library and is associated with MDAC and Windows DAC.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not for this file specifically. Those are separate runtime families and are not established sources for msdart.dll.
Should I download MDAC 2.8 on Windows 10 or Windows 11?
No, not as a general repair. MDAC 2.8 is associated with legacy Windows versions, and its SDK is a developer package. Use Windows repair tools or the affected application’s supported installer instead.
Why does the message say the specified module could not be found when the file exists?
The message can refer to a dependency required by msdart.dll or by the application. It can also result from an architecture mismatch or an incompatible entry point.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can I copy msdart.dll from another PC?
That is generally unsafe. The source may have a different Windows build, architecture, servicing level, or dependency set.
Will regsvr32 msdart.dll fix it?
Usually no. The file does not need to be registered as a self-registering COM DLL, so DllRegisterServer errors are expected.
What is the safest first repair?
If one application fails, repair or reinstall that application. If Windows or several programs are affected, install updates, run DISM, then run sfc /scannow, restart, and test again.
