You may also see The program can't start because mssp3ge.dll is missing from your computer or a message saying that the file could not be loaded.
mssp3ge.dll is a 32-bit Lingsoft CSAPI spelling component associated mainly with German proofing support in older Microsoft Office installations. It is generally not a Windows system file, so downloading a replacement DLL or copying one into System32 is usually the wrong fix.
The 60-second answer
If the error appears in Word while checking German spelling or grammar:
- Open Word and add German under Review > Language > Language preferences.
- Repair Microsoft 365 or Office from Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Modify.
- Try Quick Repair first, then Online Repair if needed.
- For an older Office installation, reinstall the matching Office proofing tools instead of copying a DLL from the internet.
- Check Windows Security quarantine if the file disappeared unexpectedly.
If another application displays the error, repair or reinstall that application. The executable named in the error is more useful for identifying the owner than the DLL filename alone.

What is mssp3ge.dll?
The file is described as Lingsoft CSAPI, a spell-checking module developed by Lingsoft, Inc. The GE suffix reflects historical language-code naming for German. Older Microsoft Word documentation uses filenames in the pattern Mssp3<language>.dll, with GE used for German proofing.
Microsoft Office file records show this DLL in historical Office proofing installations. Office 2003 documentation lists Mssp3ge.dll as version 2.54.0.0, while an Office 2010 update lists an Office-era build with a different version. A public catalog also records a 32-bit 2.26.0.0 build of approximately 120 KB, but that is not a universal version for every computer.
This explains why replacing the file with a random copy is unreliable. The correct build depends on the Office generation or application that installed it.
Is mssp3ge.dll part of Windows?
Generally, no. There is no reliable evidence that mssp3ge.dll belongs to Windows itself or should normally be present in:

It is more strongly associated with Office proofing tools or another application that bundled or used the Lingsoft spelling library.
A file with this name is not automatically malware, but the filename alone cannot prove that it is safe. Check its location, digital signature, antivirus results, and the application that loaded it. A copy inside an expected Office or application directory is more plausible than one placed in a Windows folder by an unknown installer.
Why Windows or Word reports the error
The most common causes are:
| Likely cause | What usually resolves it |
|---|---|
| German proofing tools were never installed | Add German proofing tools or a language pack |
| Office files are damaged | Run Office Quick Repair or Online Repair |
| An old Office version was removed or replaced | Reinstall the matching legacy proofing package or migrate to supported Office |
| Antivirus quarantined the file | Review quarantine, then repair the owning application |
| A non-Office application needs it | Repair, verify, or reinstall that application |
| A 32-bit application has the wrong dependency | Install the compatible application package; do not mix DLL versions |
| Broader Windows corruption exists | Run DISM and SFC as secondary checks |
The message may appear only when a document contains German text or when Word begins spelling and grammar checking. That behavior points toward a proofing-language problem rather than a general Windows failure.
Step 1: Identify the application requesting the DLL
Before changing files, find out which program is asking for mssp3ge.dll.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Check the error window
Read the title bar and the full message. If it names WINWORD.EXE, Word is the likely owner. If it names a launcher or another executable, repair that application instead.
Do not assume that every error mentioning this filename comes from Office. Multiple Office generations can coexist, and a non-Office application may also have bundled or depended on the library.
Check the file location
If a copy of the DLL exists:
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab and note the description, version, and publisher information.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab if it is present.
- Select the signature and choose Details to see whether Windows reports it as valid.
- Record the complete folder path.
The path helps identify ownership. A file beside an Office executable or inside an Office proofing directory is more relevant than one in a temporary download folder.

Step 2: Restore German proofing tools in current Office
Current Microsoft 365 installations may not use the exact legacy filename mssp3ge.dll. Installing current German proofing tools can restore spelling and grammar checking without recreating that older DLL.
- Open Word.
- Select Review.
- Select Language.
- Choose Language preferences.
- Under Office authoring languages and proofing, select Add a language.
- Choose German and the required regional variation.
- Select the option to install or obtain proofing tools if Word displays it.
- Close all Office applications.
- Reopen Word and test German text.
Microsoft’s instructions are available in Set up or change the languages used to check spelling and grammar.
If Word does not offer the required proofing tools, use Microsoft’s Language Accessory Pack for Microsoft 365. Select a package that matches your Office installation and follow its installer instructions.
Test the result
Create a new document and type a deliberately misspelled German word. Select the text, choose Review > Language > Set Proofing Language, select German, and check whether Word underlines the error.
If German checking works but an old startup error remains, another Office version or application is probably still requesting the legacy DLL. Continue with the repair steps below.
Step 3: Repair Microsoft 365 or Office
Repair Office before attempting manual file replacement. The repair process restores missing or damaged Office components from Microsoft’s installer.
- Close Word, Excel, Outlook, and other Office programs.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps and features on Windows 10.
- Find Microsoft 365, Microsoft Office, or the relevant Office edition.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Modify.
- Approve the administrator prompt.
- Select Quick Repair.
- Select Repair and wait for the process to finish.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Word and test German proofing again.
If Quick Repair does not resolve the error, repeat the process and choose Online Repair. Online Repair usually replaces more of the installation and may require you to sign in or wait longer.
Microsoft’s current procedure is documented in Repair an Office application.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What success looks like
The repair worked if:
- Word opens without the missing-file message.
- German proofing can be selected without an error.
- The same error does not return after restarting Windows.
- The application’s own files are restored in their expected installation directory.
If the error names a different executable, Office repair may have no effect. Repair the named application instead.
Step 4: Repair or reinstall a non-Office application
If the message appears when launching a game, utility, document tool, or another program, treat that program as the owner.

Use its own repair process first:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Launch the application again.
For software installed through a launcher, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or Scan and repair function. The exact label varies by application.
If repair is unavailable:
- Back up the application’s documents and settings if necessary.
- Uninstall the application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer only from the application developer or publisher’s official website.
- Install the program again.
- Restart the application and check whether the error is gone.
Do not copy a DLL from another program’s folder. Even if the filename matches, the version may not match the application that requested it.
Step 5: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software may remove or quarantine a file after an update or scan.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
mssp3ge.dllor the application that uses it. - Review the detected file path and threat details.
Only restore a quarantined file when all of the following are true:
- It came from the expected Office or application directory.
- The owning application is known.
- The file’s signature and location are credible.
- Your security software identifies it as safe or the application installer confirms it.
If you are unsure, do not restore it manually. Repair or reinstall the owning application instead. That gives you a fresh copy from the product’s installer rather than returning an unverified file.
Step 6: Handle older Office installations carefully
The strongest historical connection for mssp3ge.dll is older Office proofing support. Office 2000, Office XP or 2002, and Office 2003 used proofing components differently from current Microsoft 365 installations.
If you still use a legacy Office edition:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the Office installation.
- Choose Change.
- Select the option to add or repair features.
- Look for German proofing tools or language features.
- Install the required feature and restart Windows.
Microsoft also lists an official Office 2003 Service Pack 3 package for Proofing Tools that supports German and other languages. Office 2003 Proofing Tools are no longer a current Office product, so compatibility and availability may be limited. Do not install a package intended for a different Office generation merely because its filename contains Mssp3ge.dll.
If the old Office installation is no longer needed, uninstalling it may be safer than trying to keep its proofing components working beside a newer Office version.
Step 7: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
The documented mssp3ge.dll records include 32-bit builds. A 32-bit application needs a compatible 32-bit dependency even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
This does not mean you should copy the DLL into both Windows system folders. System32 and SysWOW64 have specific Windows loader meanings, and placing a third-party file in the wrong folder can create additional conflicts. An application may also search its own installation directory and ignore a copy placed in either system folder.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteInstead:
- Determine whether the affected application is 32-bit or 64-bit from its documentation or installation details.
- Install the matching Office language component or application package.
- Keep the dependency in the directory selected by the official installer.
- Do not combine a DLL from one Office generation with executables from another.
The 2.26.0.0 and approximately 120 KB record is only one public catalog entry. Other Microsoft records show different versions and sizes, so there is no single universal copy that is correct for every computer.

Step 8: Do not register this DLL with regsvr32
regsvr32 is normally used for registerable COM or ActiveX components. A spelling DLL loaded by an application is not automatically a COM server.
Registering mssp3ge.dll is therefore generally irrelevant. It may produce an “entry point not found” message, and a successful registration would not recreate missing proofing files or repair Office’s language configuration.
Use the Office repair, language-pack, or application-reinstall process instead. Do not run commands such as:
regsvr32 mssp3ge.dll
unless the software vendor’s own documentation specifically identifies that exact file as a registerable component and gives registration instructions.
Step 9: Use Windows repair commands only for Windows corruption
DISM and System File Checker repair Windows components. They are useful when Windows has broader corruption, update failures, or problems affecting protected system files. They are not a guaranteed way to restore a third-party Office proofing DLL.
To run them:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the permission prompt.
- Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test Word or the affected application again.
Microsoft documents these commands in its Windows repair guidance.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the application. If both commands complete successfully but the DLL error remains, return to Office repair or the non-Office application’s installer. These commands do not replace missing third-party proofing files.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Repeating DISM and SFC without identifying the owning application is unlikely to solve this particular error. If you want help with the manual process of checking system corruption and identifying what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what needs attention; its repair functions require the full version, and reinstalling the owning application remains the definitive fix when that program supplies the DLL.
Step 10: Check Windows Features only when the application requires them
Windows Features are not a normal source of mssp3ge.dll, so enabling random features is not a solution. Check them only if the affected application specifically requires a Windows component.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review the available features.
- Enable only the feature named in the application’s official requirements.
- Select OK and restart if Windows requests it.
Do not enable unrelated legacy components in the hope that they will recreate a missing Office spelling file. Install the application’s own proofing component instead.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step 11: Update drivers only when the application identifies a driver problem
A graphics, audio, chipset, or printer driver does not normally provide mssp3ge.dll. Do not install drivers merely because the DLL message appeared.
If the affected application also reports a device or driver error:

Temporary workaround for older Word
Older Word installations could request a language proofing file when automatic language detection assigned German to text. Microsoft documented disabling automatic language detection as a temporary workaround.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIn older Word versions:
- Open the document.
- Select the affected text, or press Ctrl+A.
- Open the language settings under the Review tab.
- Choose Set Proofing Language.
- Clear Detect language automatically.
- Select the correct language manually.
- Confirm the setting and test spelling again.
The exact menu wording varies by Word version. This workaround can stop Word from choosing the wrong proofing language, but it does not restore mssp3ge.dll. Install or repair the correct proofing component when possible.
Why downloading mssp3ge.dll is unsafe
Random DLL download sites sites may provide:
- Malware disguised with a familiar filename
- A file from the wrong Office generation
- A 32-bit file for an incompatible application
- An altered or unsigned copy
- A DLL that does not match the application’s other proofing files
Even a genuine DLL may not fix the problem if Office’s language configuration, registry entries, installer files, or companion dictionaries are missing. It can also leave the application in an unsupported state.
Use the Microsoft Office installer, Microsoft’s official language package, or the original application publisher’s installer. Do not download the file from an unofficial DLL repository, and do not place it manually in System32 or SysWOW64.
If the error still appears
Work through this checklist:
- Write down the exact executable named in the error.
- Note whether the message appears at startup or only during German spell-checking.
- Record the Office version and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Check whether multiple Office versions are installed.
- Review the DLL’s full path and digital signature.
- Check Windows Security or third-party antivirus quarantine.
- Run Office Repair if Word is the owner.
- Install German proofing tools if current Office is missing them.
- Repair or reinstall the named non-Office application.
- Run DISM and SFC only if broader Windows corruption is suspected.
- Check Event Viewer if the application still fails after reinstalling.
- Consider System Restore only if the problem began immediately after a known installation or removal and no installer is available.
FAQ
Is mssp3ge.dll a Windows system file?
No reliable evidence establishes it as a normal Windows component. It is associated mainly with Lingsoft CSAPI spelling support used by Office proofing installations or other applications.
Is mssp3ge.dll malware?
The filename alone cannot answer that. Verify the path, signature, hash, and antivirus results. A file in an unexpected directory should be investigated rather than automatically restored or deleted.
Should I download the 2.26.0.0 version?
No. That version is only one public catalog record. Microsoft records show other Office-era versions, and the correct file depends on the application and Office generation.
Will copying the DLL into System32 fix Word?
Usually not. Word may search its own Office or proofing directories, and the copied file may have the wrong architecture or version.
Should I run regsvr32?
Generally no. Spell-checking DLLs are normally loaded as application components rather than registered as COM servers.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why does the error appear only with German text?
Word may be trying to load German proofing support only when the selected text or automatic language detection identifies German. That behavior points toward a missing or damaged proofing component.
Can SFC restore the file?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows system files. mssp3ge.dll is associated with Office or another application, so repair or reinstall that owning product instead.
What is the safest permanent fix?
Identify the requesting application, then repair or reinstall its official language or proofing component. For current Office, add German proofing tools and run Office Repair. For older or non-Office software, use the matching original installer.
