brspl01a.dll errors usually appear when Brother printer or multifunction-device software can no longer find one of its files. The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the Brother software that requested brspl01a.dll, not to download a replacement DLL.
Common messages include:
- “This application failed to start because BRSPL01A.dll was not found.”
- “The file BRSPL01A.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “Error loading BRSPL01A.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because BRSPL01A.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “BRSPL01A.dll could not be located.”
- “Cannot find BRSPL01A.dll.”
The 60-second answer
BRSPL01A.dll is a non-Windows application DLL attributed to Brother Industries, Ltd. It is associated with Brother printer, scanner, multifunction-device, and related utility software, although the exact Brother model or package that originally installed this particular file cannot be confirmed from public Brother documentation.
Do this first:
- Identify the Brother printer, scanner, label printer, or multifunction device connected to the computer.
- Open Start, type Brother Utilities, and open it.
- Select the affected Brother model.
- Choose Tools > Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the exact model’s current software from Brother’s official Support and Downloads site.
- Install Full Driver & Software Package for the correct Windows version.
If Brother Utilities is missing or cannot remove the software, use Brother’s official Uninstall Tool. Brother says this tool can remove software installed from a CD, Full Driver & Software Package, Add Printer Wizard, or Found New Hardware Wizard.
This repair is preferable to copying brspl01a.dll into System32, SysWOW64, or the application folder because the missing file may be only one part of a damaged installation.

What is brspl01a.dll
brspl01a.dll is a third-party application DLL, not a normal Windows component. The name is associated with Brother print-spool software and Brother device utilities. The exact product that installed it depends on the computer’s original Brother software and cannot be safely inferred from the filename alone.
Public file catalogues report an older 32-bit Win32 file attributed to Brother Industries, Ltd., along with legacy version, size, and hash information. Those catalogue records are not a Brother installer manifest, so treat them as reported metadata rather than proof that every file with this name is authentic.
A 64-bit version of Windows can run 32-bit Brother software. That does not mean every copy of brspl01a.dll is interchangeable. The DLL must match the Brother program that loads it and the other files installed beside it.
Where should it be located
There is no single correct Windows-wide location for this file. A genuine copy would normally be stored in the directory belonging to the Brother application or driver package that uses it.
The path named in the error is important. It may point to:
- A Brother printer utility folder
- A Brother print-monitor or spool folder
- A legacy device application directory
- A leftover startup or service component
- A temporary or quarantined location
Do not assume that C:WindowsSystem32 is the correct destination. Copying application DLLs into Windows system folders can create version conflicts and make future troubleshooting harder.
Why the error appears
The most likely causes are:
- A Brother installation was damaged, incompletely removed, or partially updated.
- A Brother printer or utility was removed while a startup entry or service remained.
- Antivirus software quarantined or deleted the file.
- The wrong Brother package was installed for the model or Windows version.
- A legacy Brother utility is being launched automatically even though the printer is no longer used.
- The named DLL exists, but one of its dependencies is missing.
- The file is corrupted or has been replaced by an untrusted copy.
- Windows or disk corruption is affecting several unrelated files.
The timing provides a useful clue. If the message started after removing a Brother printer, running disk cleanup, updating Windows, reinstalling Brother software, or seeing an antivirus alert, begin with the corresponding section below.
Fix 1: Completely reinstall the Brother software
This is the primary repair for brspl01a.dll.
Step 1: Identify the device
Find the model printed on the Brother device or on its original documentation. Do not install software for a similar-looking model. Brother packages are model-specific, and an apparently close substitute may not contain the required components.

Step 2: Uninstall through Brother Utilities
- Open Start.
- Select All apps.
- Open the Brother folder.
- Open Brother Utilities.
- Select the affected model.
- Choose Tools.
- Select Uninstall.
- Follow the prompts to remove the Brother software.
- Restart Windows.
If you do not see Brother Utilities, search Windows for the model name, Brother, or Uninstall. You can also check Settings > Apps > Installed apps for Brother entries, but Brother’s own uninstaller is preferable when available.
Step 3: Use Brother’s Uninstall Tool if necessary
If Brother Utilities reports an error, does not list the model, or leaves the same message after removal, use Brother’s official Uninstall Tool. Download it from Brother Support for the affected model or region, run it as an administrator, and restart when it finishes.
Do not remove shared Brother software blindly if multiple devices are still in use. Record the installed Brother models first and remove only the affected package where possible.
Step 4: Install the correct package
- Open Brother’s official Support and Downloads page.
- Search for the exact model.
- Select Windows 11 or Windows 10, matching the installed operating system.
- Download Full Driver & Software Package.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the connection instructions.
- Restart Windows after installation if prompted.
- Launch the Brother utility or print a test page.
The repair worked if the original program opens without the DLL message and the device appears normally in Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners or in the Brother utility.
A current package may no longer contain a DLL from older Brother software. If the error returns after a clean reinstall, the message may come from a leftover legacy utility rather than the current printer driver.
A driver inventory can also involve checking several model-specific packages and hardware entries manually. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver problems and show what needs updating; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the exact Brother package remains the definitive repair when this file belongs to a specific Brother application.
Fix 2: Find and remove a leftover startup entry
Sometimes the printer still works, but Windows displays the error during sign-in. That usually indicates a stale startup item, status monitor, or service.
Recommended Free Tools
Check Windows startup apps
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for entries named Brother, BrSpl, a printer model, Status Monitor, or an unfamiliar item whose location points to an old Brother folder.
- Right-click the entry and choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Disabling a startup entry is a diagnostic step. If the error disappears, return to Brother Utilities or Settings > Apps > Installed apps and remove the obsolete Brother software properly.
Check installed services
- Press Win + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Look for Brother-related services.
- Open a service’s Properties and inspect Path to executable.
- If the path points to software that has already been removed, record the service name.
- Use the associated Brother uninstaller instead of deleting random service files.
Do not stop or delete a service that belongs to a Brother device still in use. If the printer works and the error disappears after disabling an obsolete monitor, reinstalling the entire active printer package may be unnecessary.
For more advanced startup investigation, inspect the Details tab in Task Manager and the full path shown in the error. The executable that requests brspl01a.dll is more useful than the DLL name alone.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a DLL after a detection, cleanup operation, or change in reputation.

One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
brspl01a.dll, Brother software, or the executable named in the error. - Record the detected file path and detection name.
- Do not restore the file merely because its filename matches.
Restore a quarantined file only when all of these conditions are satisfied:
- It is located inside the expected Brother installation directory.
- The Brother software was installed from Brother’s official installer.
- The file’s digital signature is valid where a signature is provided.
- A current security scan does not identify the file as malicious.
- The file is required by an installed Brother program.
If the security product continues to detect the file, leave it quarantined, run a full scan, and reinstall the Brother package from its official source. Do not create an exclusion just to suppress the error.
A filename does not prove authenticity. Malware can use a genuine DLL name in an unrelated directory.
Fix 4: Check whether the file exists but a dependency is missing
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that brspl01a.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load one of the DLLs that it depends on.

- Check whether
brspl01a.dllis present. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Review the Digital Signatures tab if present.
- Check the Details tab for publisher information.
- Do not replace the file yet.
If the DLL exists but the program still fails, reinstall the owning Brother package. Reinstallation restores the related files together and is safer than trying to identify dependencies individually.
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET automatically just because a DLL is missing. brspl01a.dll is not identified as a Microsoft runtime file. Install a Microsoft runtime only when the error names a missing runtime component or the Brother installer specifically requires it.
Fix 5: Check Windows component health
SFC and DISM are useful when Windows itself is damaged or several unrelated Windows components are failing. They normally will not recreate a third-party Brother DLL.
First install pending Windows updates, restart, and then run the commands from an elevated terminal.

- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows if requested.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test the Brother application.
Possible results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows files were not detected as damaged.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: review the CBS log or repair Windows further, but still reinstall Brother software for this specific DLL.
Running these commands repeatedly will not normally restore brspl01a.dll, because the file is not a Windows component.
If you prefer an automated scan to avoid repeatedly hunting through Windows repair results, Outbyte PC Repair can show detected system issues; its free scan identifies problems, while repair is handled by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the Brother application remains the definitive fix for an application-owned DLL.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 as a routine solution
regsvr32 is appropriate only for a DLL that implements the DllRegisterServer entry point and is specifically intended to be registered. Many application and driver-support DLLs do not provide that function.
Running a command such as this is not a general repair:
regsvr32 brspl01a.dll
A likely result is an error stating that the module was loaded but the entry point DllRegisterServer was not found. That does not prove the DLL is bad. It means the DLL is not designed for this registration method.
Registration will not:
- Restore a missing file
- Repair a damaged Brother installation
- Replace missing dependencies
- Convert a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit DLL
- Make an unsigned or incompatible file safe
Use Brother’s installer instead.
Fix 7: Check Device Manager and Windows printer settings
Device Manager can reveal whether the hardware or driver is also damaged.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, Imaging devices, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for the Brother device or a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Read the status shown under Device status.
If the device has an error:
- Right-click it.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver package.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the exact Brother Full Driver & Software Package.
Do not repeatedly select Update driver and accept a generic Windows driver if the Brother utility is required. A generic driver may print successfully while leaving Brother status or scanning software broken.
Windows Features are not normally relevant to this file. Do not enable random legacy components or .NET versions unless the Brother installer or a separate, clearly identified application specifically requires them.
Fix 8: Consider an old Brother application
The reported metadata for this filename describes a legacy 32-bit DLL associated with an older era of Brother software. A current Windows 11 or Windows 10 package may not include it.

If the error began after removing an old Brother device:
- Record the complete error path.
- Identify the executable requesting the DLL.
- Check Settings > Apps > Installed apps for the related Brother utility.
- Remove it through Brother Utilities or the official Uninstall Tool.
- Restart Windows.
- Install current software only if the device is still supported.
- If the device is discontinued, identify the original application before attempting compatibility mode.
System Restore can be reasonable if the error began immediately after a known software removal or update. Create or verify backups first, and prefer the official Brother reinstall path when available.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Do not download brspl01a.dll from a random DLL website. A downloaded copy may be:
- The wrong version
- The wrong architecture
- Missing required dependencies
- Modified or infected
- Unsigned
- Intended for a different Brother product
- Unable to repair the damaged installer that originally requested it
Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can also create architecture mismatches and DLL-loading risks. The safe source is Brother’s official Support and Downloads site, using the exact device model and Windows version.
FAQ
Is brspl01a.dll a Windows file?
No evidence identifies it as a Windows system file. Treat it as a Brother application or driver-support DLL.
Which Brother printer installed it?
The exact originating model or package has not been publicly verified. Inspect the error path, installed applications, Brother model, and requesting executable instead of guessing.
Is it 32-bit or 64-bit?
Public file records describe an older Win32 file. A 64-bit Windows installation can run 32-bit Brother software, but the replacement must match the Brother program that loads it.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. Restore the Brother installation through Brother Utilities, the official Uninstall Tool, and the exact model package.
Will SFC fix it?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while brspl01a.dll belongs to third-party Brother software.

What information should I provide if the problem remains?
Record the Brother model, Windows version, complete error text, full path named in the message, executable or service requesting the DLL, whether the printer still works, and any antivirus quarantine details. That information identifies the owning component far more reliably than the DLL name alone.
