Before replacing anything, identify which application is reporting the error.
- Which program fails: Nero Burning ROM, Nero Express, another older Nero tool, or a Windows administrative utility?
- What does the message name:
mmc.dll, ormmc.exe, an.mscfile, or a snap-in? - When did it begin: after reinstalling Nero, removing an older version, antivirus quarantine, disk cleanup, an update, or restoring a backup?
- Where is the file: inside the Nero program folder, or as an unexpected copy in
C:WindowsSystem32orC:WindowsSysWOW64? - What architecture is involved: the publicly catalogued Nero file is reported as a 32-bit module, so the replacement must match the Nero application that originally supplied it.
The name is confusing because Windows also has Microsoft Management Console. Windows documents that component as MMC, launched through mmc.exe, with console files such as devmgmt.msc and services.msc. That is different from the legacy Nero mmc.dll associated with the Nero Recorder Driver component.
If the error appears while starting Nero and explicitly names mmc.dll, repair Nero first. If it says that Windows cannot open an .msc console, follow the Windows repair branch later in this guide.
What mmc.dll belongs to
Historical public file metadata describes mmc.dll as Nero Recorder Driver, part of Nero Burning ROM, with Ahead Software AG listed as the historical publisher. Those records also describe it as a legacy 32-bit module, but the exact historical version, size, checksum, installation path, and current 64-bit equivalent are not confirmed by a current Nero release manifest.

That qualification matters. A file with the same name from another Nero release, another application, or an unverified download site is not a safe substitute. A working repair restores the Nero installation that owns the file, including its dependent files and registration state.
Fix 1: Repair Nero from Windows
Use this first if Nero still appears in the installed-app list. It is quicker and safer than manually copying a DLL.
Windows 11
- Close Nero and any disc-burning utilities.
- Right-click Start and select Installed apps.
- Search for Nero.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the affected Nero product.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Wait for Windows to finish, then restart the computer.
- Launch the exact Nero program that produced the error.
Windows 10
- Close Nero.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Apps & features.
- Select the Nero product.
- Choose Advanced options if Windows provides it.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and test Nero again.
Some older desktop installers do not expose a Repair button. In that case:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs, then Programs and Features.
- Select the Nero entry.
- Look for Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart and test the application.
If Repair completes but the same message returns, continue with a reinstall. Do not download an isolated mmc.dll to fill the gap.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix 2: Reinstall the matching Nero generation
A clean reinstall is the most likely lasting fix when Nero’s files are damaged, incomplete, or from different releases.
Before removing Nero, locate the installer for the same Nero generation and preserve any license information or project data you still need. Nero maintains an official installer catalog covering its supported product installers. Do not assume that installing the newest available Nero package will repair a much older application that expects legacy files.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps and then Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Select the affected Nero product.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the Nero uninstaller prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the installer for the same Nero generation.
- Install the product using an administrator account if requested.
- Restart again.
- Launch Nero and test the operation that previously failed.
If the uninstall entry is missing or the installer reports that another Nero version is already present, do not keep installing over the top. Multiple older Nero installations can leave conflicting files, registry entries, and shared components.

When to use Nero FirstAidKit
Use Nero’s FirstAidKit cleanup procedure when ordinary uninstall and reinstall do not remove the conflict. It removes Nero-related files and registry entries, so treat it as a deeper cleanup rather than a routine repair.
- Back up Nero project files and note your license information.
- Close all Nero processes.
- Download the FirstAidKit from Nero’s official support resources.
- Run it according to Nero’s instructions.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Install the matching Nero product again.
- Test the original application.
A clean Nero removal is more appropriate than copying a replacement DLL because it restores the application’s complete file set and configuration.
Fix 3: Check whether security software quarantined the file
An antivirus product can remove or quarantine a damaged, modified, or incorrectly identified application file. Do not automatically mark the detection as a false positive.
Check Windows Security
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event mentioning Nero,
mmc.dll, or the Nero installation directory. - Open the event and review its location and action.
- If the file belongs to a legitimate Nero installation, verify the installation source before considering Restore or Allow on device.
- If the file is in an unexpected Windows directory, has no trustworthy provenance, or triggers repeated detections, leave it quarantined.
- Reinstall Nero from its official installer instead.
- Run a full system scan.
If security software removed the file, reinstalling Nero after the scan is generally safer than restoring a single quarantined DLL. Check whether Controlled Folder Access or another security feature is blocking Nero from accessing the recorder or its own files.
Fix 4: Confirm the file location and architecture
A 32-bit Nero application can require its private DLL in the Nero program directory even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Installing a 64-bit file, moving a 32-bit file into a Windows system directory, or mixing files from different releases can create new errors.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →To inspect the application path:
- Right-click the Nero shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Note the path in Target.
- Select Open File Location if available.
- Check whether the Nero directory contains its expected files.
You can also inspect the process architecture:
- Start Nero if it opens far enough to create a process.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading and choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform if your Windows version provides it.
- Compare the application’s architecture with the files supplied by its installer.
Do not treat a public catalogue’s reported bitness as proof that every Nero release used the same build. The safe rule is to restore the file through the installer for the application that originally supplied it.
Fix 5: Update or reinstall a related device driver only when evidence points there
The historical description calls this file a Nero Recorder Driver, but that does not make it a normal Windows device-driver file. Device Manager will not normally restore Nero’s private mmc.dll. Use Device Manager only when the error is accompanied by a genuine recorder, chipset, storage-controller, or other hardware problem.

Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives.
- Expand Storage controllers and IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers if present.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected hardware and select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test Nero.
If the hardware stopped working immediately after a driver update, open the same Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver when available. If the device remains broken, uninstall the device from Device Manager, restart Windows, and let Windows detect it again. Obtain hardware drivers from the computer or device manufacturer rather than using a DLL file as a driver replacement.
Manually hunting through driver packages can be difficult when several storage and chipset components have similar names. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what it identifies; its full-version driver installation is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling Nero when Nero itself owns the missing file.

Fix 6: Repair Windows only if the error is really MMC
Do not run Windows repair commands merely because the filename contains “mmc”. Use this branch when the message mentions:
mmc.exedevmgmt.mscservices.msc- Computer Management
- another Microsoft Management Console snap-in
- “MMC cannot open the file”
Windows’ documented MMC component is mmc.exe, not the Nero-specific mmc.dll. If Windows administrative tools fail, damaged system components or snap-ins may be involved.
Run DISM, then SFC
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the same MMC console that originally failed.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. DISM may use Windows Update as a repair source. If DISM says that source files cannot be found, use a matching Windows installation source according to Microsoft’s repair-source instructions. Do not copy arbitrary system DLLs from another computer.
Repeatedly running SFC will not repair a private Nero DLL. It repairs protected Windows system files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf you want assistance identifying which Windows components are damaged instead of repeatedly rerunning commands by hand, Outbyte PC Repair can scan and report issues, while its full-version repair is optional; for a Nero-specific mmc.dll error, reinstalling the owning Nero program remains the definitive fix.
Do Windows Features help?
Usually not. Enabling or disabling Microsoft Management Console features is not a standard way to restore Nero’s mmc.dll. Windows Features may be relevant to a separate administrative-console problem, but they do not recreate a missing private Nero file.
Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 for this missing-file error
Avoid this command:
regsvr32 mmc.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration interface such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general installation command for every DLL. There is no confirmed evidence that Nero’s mmc.dll is a self-registering COM server.

If the original message says “Cannot register mmc.dll”, that does not prove registration is the correct repair. It may indicate that someone already attempted an unsuitable command, or that the file is damaged or not the expected module. Repair or reinstall Nero instead.
Why downloading mmc.dll is unsafe
Random DLL download sites pages can provide:
- malware or tampered files
- the wrong Nero release
- the wrong architecture
- a file with no trustworthy signature
- a DLL that creates a new dependency error
- a copy that hides the damaged Nero installation
Do not copy an unverified file into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or another system directory. Do not replace the file with one from a different computer unless you are working in a controlled recovery process and can verify the exact source, architecture, version, path, and signature.
The safe sources are the official Nero installer for the matching product generation and Microsoft’s own Windows repair tools when the error belongs to Windows MMC.
If the error says “specified module could not be found”
That wording does not always mean the named mmc.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by the DLL.
Use this order:
- Confirm that Nero is the application named in the error.
- Check whether the Nero installation is complete.
- Repair or reinstall the matching Nero generation.
- Check Windows Security for quarantine events.
- Test whether Nero starts after a clean restart.
- If it still fails, review Event Viewer.
To open relevant logs:
- Press Win + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error at the time Nero failed.
- Note the failing application, faulting module, and exception details.
- Do not download another DLL based only on the faulting-module name.
If every Nero repair fails, create a temporary Windows user profile and test there. A profile-specific permissions or configuration problem can prevent an application from loading correctly. You can also review Nero’s crash logs if the installation creates them.
FAQ
Is mmc.dll a Windows file?
Not in the sense suggested by the Microsoft Management Console name. Windows documents MMC as mmc.exe and uses .msc console files. The mmc.dll discussed here is a legacy Nero-related file identified in historical public metadata.
Can I copy mmc.dll into System32?
No. That can create an incorrect system-wide copy, cause architecture conflicts, and leave the damaged Nero installation unrepaired. Restore the owning Nero product instead.

Should I install a 64-bit version of the file?
Do not assume one exists. Historical public metadata reports a 32-bit Nero file, and the correct architecture is the one required by the affected Nero application. Use its matching installer.
Will SFC repair Nero’s mmc.dll?
No. SFC repairs protected Windows system files. It is appropriate for a Windows MMC problem, not as the primary repair for a missing private Nero DLL.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchDoes Device Manager reinstall this file?
Normally no. Although the historical description includes “Recorder Driver”, mmc.dll belongs to Nero’s application installation rather than being a standard Windows device-driver file. Use Device Manager only when there is separate evidence of a hardware-driver problem.
Why did the error appear after uninstalling Nero?
An incomplete removal or installation of multiple Nero generations can leave missing or conflicting application files. Use the matching Nero installer, and use Nero’s cleanup procedure when a normal reinstall does not resolve the conflict.
What if Windows Security quarantined the file?
Review the event and the file’s location. Do not restore a suspicious copy automatically. Scan the system and reinstall Nero from its official source when the original installation is no longer trustworthy.
What should I do if the error persists?
Confirm the executable path, reinstall the exact Nero generation, inspect quarantine history, and review Application events in Event Viewer. If the message actually names mmc.exe or an .msc file, switch to the DISM and SFC branch rather than continuing to replace Nero files.
