vui.dll is an Adobe application file, not a Windows system DLL. If Windows reports that vui.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, the safest solution is usually to repair the Adobe program that requested it.
Before changing anything, note:
- Which Adobe application displays the error.
- Whether the error appears when launching the application, opening a document, or starting Windows.
- Whether the problem began after an update, reinstall, antivirus detection, disk cleanup, backup restore, or computer migration.
- Whether the application is legacy 32-bit software running on 64-bit Windows.
- Whether the message says
vui.dllis missing or says that a specified module could not be found. - Whether
vui.dllexists in the Adobe program folder beside the application executable.
Do not download vui.dll from a random DLL website or copy it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. A downloaded copy may contain malware, belong to another Adobe release, use the wrong architecture, or leave the real installation problem unresolved.
What vui.dll belongs to
Public file records describe vui.dll as Adobe Encoder UI, associated with Adobe’s internal or product name Vindaloo. Some inventories also associate it with the legacy Adobe RoboHelp for Word 7.0 application.
That association is useful when identifying the affected software, but it does not prove that every Adobe product using an encoder component contains the same file. Current Adobe documentation does not provide a definitive public manifest for this legacy DLL.

The file is not known to be part of:
- Windows itself
- Microsoft Visual C++
- DirectX
- .NET
- A current shared Adobe Creative Cloud runtime
The practical consequence is important: repairing Windows may help only when Windows itself is damaged. It normally will not recreate a private Adobe application file.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the Adobe application
This is the most likely solution, especially when the error appears immediately after launching an Adobe program.
If the application offers Repair
Some older installers and enterprise packages include a repair option.
- Close all Adobe applications.
- Open Start.
- Type Control Panel and open it.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the Adobe application named in the error.
- Look for Change, Repair, or Modify.
- Choose Repair and follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the Adobe application again.
If the program has a launcher with Repair, Verify files, or Verify integrity, use that option before replacing any files manually.
A successful repair should restore the missing component to the application’s own directory and allow the program to start normally. Do not expect the file to appear in System32.
If no repair option exists
Uninstall and reinstall the owning Adobe program.
- Save your work and close Adobe processes.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the Adobe application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Complete the removal process.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the program again from its original licensed Adobe installer, licensed installation media, enterprise package, or an Adobe-supported download.
- Apply the program’s own updates.
- Restart Windows once more and test the application.
For a legacy Adobe release, the current downloads page may not provide the required installer. In that situation, use the original licensed installer or contact Adobe support. Do not substitute a similarly named DLL from another Adobe product.
If the application is no longer installed but Windows still displays the error during startup, the problem may be an orphaned startup entry. Remove the obsolete Adobe component through Installed apps or investigate the startup entry rather than downloading vui.dll.
Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Antivirus software may quarantine an old application DLL after a definition update, especially when the file comes from legacy software. A quarantine event does not automatically prove that the file is malicious.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
vui.dllor the Adobe application. - Expand the event and record the detected path and action.
- Compare the path with the Adobe installation directory.
Restore the file only when all of these conditions are met:
- It came from a legitimate Adobe installer or licensed installation.
- The path is the expected Adobe application directory.
- The file’s origin is trustworthy.
- A current security scan does not indicate a compromise.

The safer approach is usually to uninstall and reinstall the Adobe application, then submit a suspected false positive through the security vendor’s reporting process.
Do not create a broad antivirus exclusion for System32, SysWOW64, Downloads, or a whole drive just to make the error disappear.

Fix 3: Check the expected file location
The application’s own folder is normally the relevant location for a private Adobe DLL.
To locate the application:
- Right-click the Adobe shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the path in Target or select Open File Location.
- Look in that folder, and in nearby subfolders, for
vui.dll.
You can also check the running process:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Right-click the Adobe process.
- Select Open file location.
A file beside the correct Adobe executable is more plausible than a copy in:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64C:Users<name>Downloads- A temporary folder
- An unrelated application directory
If a copy exists in an unexpected location, do not move it into the Adobe folder automatically. Scan it, preserve the path information, and reinstall the owning application.
You can inspect a file’s basic identity without registering it:

vui.dll. - Select Properties.
- Check the Details tab.
- Review the description, publisher, and product information.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab if one is present.
Historical public records disagree about the file’s architecture, version, and size. Treat those records as identification clues, not as a specification for downloading a replacement.
Fix 4: Account for 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit Adobe application normally needs the matching 32-bit version of its private dependencies, even when it runs on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit copy from another release is not a safe replacement.
To check your Windows architecture:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > About.
- Read System type.
To check an application’s architecture, use its documentation or installation package. Windows does not always state the architecture directly in the shortcut properties.
Do not mix:
- Files from different Adobe releases
- Files from different Adobe products
- 32-bit and 64-bit DLLs
- Files copied from another computer
- A downloaded DLL and an installer-provided DLL
The correct architecture is restored by reinstalling the exact Adobe application release. It is not reliably fixed by copying files between System32 and SysWOW64.

Fix 5: Distinguish a missing file from a missing dependency
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that vui.dll itself is absent. It can mean that Windows found vui.dll but could not load another dependency required by it.
Check the Adobe program folder first:
- If
vui.dllis absent, repair or reinstall the Adobe application. - If
vui.dllis present but the error remains, the problem may be another dependency, incompatible software, permissions, or a damaged installation. - If the error names a different DLL, troubleshoot that dependency instead of replacing
vui.dll.
Avoid installing random Visual C++ packages as a first response. Microsoft’s supported runtime packages are available through its Visual C++ downloads documentation, but the architecture and runtime version must match the application. Installing every runtime does not recreate an Adobe-private file.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when Windows is also damaged
Because vui.dll is reported as an Adobe file, Windows component repair is a secondary step. Use it when other Windows features are failing, Windows Update is damaged, or system corruption is apparent.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft documents DISM as a tool for repairing the Windows image. See the DISM repair guidance.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Adobe application.
Microsoft describes SFC as checking protected Windows system files. Its documented repair sequence is covered in the Microsoft SFC and DISM troubleshooting guidance.
SFC normally does not restore a private Adobe DLL. If both commands complete successfully and the Adobe error remains, return to the Adobe installer rather than repeating the commands indefinitely.
When manually running DISM and SFC, identifying which component changed can be difficult, especially if the same error returns after several attempts. It is optional, and reinstalling the Adobe application remains the definitive fix for a missing Adobe-owned file.
Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 for this DLL
Do not run:
regsvr32 vui.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified evidence that this Adobe UI DLL is a self-registering COM or ActiveX library.

Using regsvr32 from System32 or SysWOW64 can produce an additional registry error without repairing the application. Microsoft documents the command’s purpose and syntax in its regsvr32 documentation.
For an application DLL, use the application’s installer instead.
Fix 8: Check compatibility for legacy Adobe software
Older Adobe programs may depend on discontinued licensing services, old installer components, or Windows behavior that has changed. A clean reinstall can therefore fail even when the installer appears to complete.

Try compatibility settings only after obtaining the correct installer:
- Right-click the Adobe application executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an appropriate older Windows version if the vendor documentation recommends it.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch the application.
Do not use compatibility mode to justify copying an untrusted DLL into a system folder.
If the installer fails, record the exact message and contact Adobe support with the application name, release, Windows version, and installer source.
Fix 9: Test another Windows user profile
A damaged per-user Adobe configuration can cause an application to fail for one account while working for another.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Accounts.
- Select Other users.
- Choose Add account.
- Create a temporary local test account.
- Sign in to that account.
- Launch the Adobe application.
If the program works in the new profile, the DLL may not be the underlying problem. Reset or recreate the affected user’s Adobe settings according to the application’s support instructions. Do not delete the original profile before backing up its documents and settings.

A missing vui.dll message is not normally a driver error. Update drivers only when the Adobe application also crashes with display errors, Device Manager reports a fault, or other graphics applications fail.
To check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
If Windows cannot find a suitable driver, obtain one from the computer or graphics hardware manufacturer. Do not expect a driver update to restore vui.dll.
Manually checking every hardware entry and matching driver versions can be time-consuming when several devices are outdated. Windows Features are usually not the answer
Turning Windows Features on or off will not normally install vui.dll.

- Review the list without enabling unrelated components.
- Select Cancel unless a specific Adobe requirement identifies a feature.
Do not enable legacy components simply because a DLL error appears. Installing an unrelated Windows feature can add complexity without restoring the Adobe file.
When malware is a possibility
A file named vui.dll is not automatically genuine. Investigate it when it appears in a temporary folder, user profile, Downloads folder, or unrelated program directory.

- Right-click the file.
- Select Scan with Microsoft Defender.
- Record the full path.
- Check the file’s Properties and digital signature information.
- Do not whitelist it merely because its filename matches an online description.
- Reinstall the legitimate Adobe application if the file is suspicious.
If Windows Security detects the file, follow its recommended removal process. Do not restore it unless its origin and location are confidently verified.
If System Restore is the only remaining option
Use System Restore only when the failure clearly began after a recent system or application change and a restore point predates that change.

- Type Recovery.
- Open Recovery Control Panel.
- Select Open System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Review the affected programs.
- Confirm and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can revert applications, settings, and updates. Microsoft’s System Restore guidance explains what the process changes.
Final escalation checklist
If the error continues after reinstalling the Adobe application, collect:
- The exact Adobe program name
- The complete error text
- The Windows version
- The Adobe application version
- The full path of the executable
- Whether
vui.dllexists beside it - Whether antivirus quarantined the file
- Whether the file has a trusted signature
- Whether the error affects every Windows profile
- Whether the installer completed successfully
- Any Event Viewer path or module name
Send that information to Adobe support or the administrator responsible for the licensed installation. Do not replace the file from a DLL download site, register it with regsvr32, or place it in a Windows system directory.

Is vui.dll a Windows file?
No. It is reported as an Adobe application DLL described as Adobe Encoder UI and associated with Vindaloo.

That is not a safe repair. The correct file must match the Adobe release and application architecture. Reinstall the owning Adobe program from its legitimate installer.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. A private Adobe DLL normally belongs beside the Adobe executable or in one of its application folders.
Is vui.dll definitely part of RoboHelp?
Public inventories associate it with Adobe RoboHelp for Word 7.0, but current Adobe documentation does not confirm an exclusive relationship. Identify the executable that displays the error before deciding which program to repair.
Will SFC restore it?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows system files, not ordinary third-party Adobe application files.
Why does Windows say a specified module could not be found when the file exists?
The message can indicate that a dependency of vui.dll is missing or incompatible. Use the Adobe installer’s repair process rather than copying another DLL.
Does regsvr32 vui.dll fix the problem?
There is no verified reason to use it for this file. regsvr32 is for DLLs designed for registration, not for every missing application DLL.
What if the error appears only at startup?
The Adobe program may have been removed while a startup entry remained. Remove the obsolete Adobe component or startup item instead of installing vui.dll manually.
