dmocx.dll is a Microsoft Windows system DLL named TreeView OCX. If dmocx.dll is missing, cannot be loaded, or is reported as corrupted, repair Windows first rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The safest first repair is to run DISM and System File Checker from an elevated Command Prompt:

It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET assembly, or ordinary game DLL. An older Windows utility, management tool, or legacy application may depend on it, but the file itself belongs to Windows.
Historical inventories identify legitimate copies under the Windows system directory. Windows releases and architectures use different builds, so there is no single version, file size, hash, or location that applies to every installation.

A file is not genuine merely because it has the correct name. Its location, digital signature, Windows servicing state, and architecture all matter.
Error messages you may see
Windows or the affected application may display messages such as:

- “dmocx.dll could not be loaded.”
- “dmocx.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- An application-specific message saying that a required component or class could not be created.
These messages do not all indicate the same failure. The file may be missing, corrupted, the wrong architecture, incorrectly registered, blocked by security software, or unable to load a dependent component.
Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the most important fix when the error points to C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or another Windows directory.
Step 1: Open an elevated Command Prompt
- Press the Windows key.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
Step 2: Repair the component store
Enter this command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Leave the window open until the operation completes. DISM checks and repairs the Windows component store, which SFC uses as a source for healthy protected files.
Step 3: Check protected system files
Run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
Step 4: Restart and test
Restart Windows, then open the program that produced the error.
Recommended Free Tools
A successful repair may report that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them. If the application opens normally after restarting, no manual DLL replacement is needed.
If DISM reports that source files could not be found, install pending Windows updates and restart. Then run DISM and SFC again. If the problem remains, use matching official Windows installation media or Windows recovery options rather than a DLL download.
Repeating SFC without understanding the result can make troubleshooting slow. Outbyte PC Repair can show the problems its scan detects and automate parts of the repair process, but its full repair features require the full version, and it is not a substitute for repairing Windows with official recovery tools when the component store itself is damaged.
Fix 2: Install pending Windows updates
An interrupted update or inconsistent component store can leave a Windows DLL unavailable or unusable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWindows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart when prompted.
- Run DISM and SFC again if the error remains.
Windows 10
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install pending updates.
- Restart Windows.
Do not assume that every dmocx.dll error was caused by Windows Update. Updating is useful because it can complete an interrupted repair and restore servicing components, but the exact cause still depends on the error path and system condition.
Fix 3: Check whether the file exists
Use these commands to see whether Windows can locate the file.
Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
where dmocx.dll
dir "%windir%System32dmocx.dll"
dir "%windir%SysWOW64dmocx.dll"
Possible results include:
- The file is present in
System32. - The file is present in
SysWOW64. - Both copies exist on 64-bit Windows.
- The file is absent from one or both locations.
- A copy exists somewhere unexpected, such as an application folder.
A missing file should be restored through DISM, SFC, System Restore, Windows recovery, or the original application installer. Do not copy a file from another computer simply because the filename matches.
Fix 4: Understand System32, SysWOW64, and application architecture
The directory names on 64-bit Windows are counterintuitive:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →System32normally contains 64-bit system binaries.SysWOW64normally contains 32-bit system binaries.
A 32-bit application may need the 32-bit copy. A 64-bit application cannot use a 32-bit DLL, and a 32-bit DLL cannot be substituted for a 64-bit one.
If the error message shows a path, use that path as an important clue. If it does not, identify whether the affected application is 32-bit or 64-bit. The safest way to restore the matching file is still Windows servicing or the application’s original installer.
A “not designed to run on Windows” message can result from a corrupted file, an architecture mismatch, or an invalid binary. It does not automatically prove malware.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine a damaged or suspicious copy of dmocx.dll.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an action involving
dmocx.dll. - Check the reported file path and detection details.
Do not restore the file solely because an application says it is missing. First verify that the copy was in a legitimate Windows directory, check its digital signature when possible, and run a full or offline malware scan if the detection is suspicious.
If the file repeatedly disappears after restoration, investigate the security alert instead of repeatedly copying it back. A real malware problem or a damaged storage device can make the same file disappear again.
Fix 6: Use System Restore if the problem began recently
System Restore can help when the error started immediately after a software installation, update, driver change, or system modification and a restore point is available.
- Press the Windows key.
- Type
Create a restore point. - Open the matching result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Next, review the affected programs, and select Finish.
System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can roll back drivers, applications, registry settings, and system files. Save open work before starting. If no restore point exists, use DISM and SFC or Windows recovery options instead.
Fix 7: Repair the affected application
If Windows itself works normally and only one older program reports the error, the application may be damaged or may use an outdated COM registration.
Repair through Windows Settings
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected program.
- Select its menu or Advanced options.
- Choose Repair if available.
- Restart the application.
Repair through Control Panel
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Right-click the affected application.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
For a game or launcher, use its built-in Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity function. If the error continues, uninstall and reinstall the program using its original vendor-provided installer.
Do not place dmocx.dll into the game directory as a shortcut. If the program requires a private copy, the application installer should provide the correct build.

Fix 8: Check Windows Features only when the program identifies one
dmocx.dll is not fixed by randomly enabling Windows Features. However, an older program may require a Windows component that has been disabled.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Type
Windows Features. - Open Turn Windows features on or off.
- Review the feature named in the application’s documentation or error message.
- Enable only the required feature.
- Select OK and restart if Windows requests it.
Do not enable unrelated legacy features merely because a DLL is missing. If the application documentation does not identify a required feature, return to Windows repair and application repair instead.
Fix 9: Update or reinstall a related driver
A driver normally does not provide dmocx.dll, but a damaged Windows management tool, display utility, storage driver, or hardware-management application may expose the error while it starts. Update the driver only when Device Manager or the affected program identifies a relevant device.
Use Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category associated with the problem.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
For a driver supplied by a computer or hardware manufacturer, use the manufacturer’s official support channel. Do not use a driver package merely because its name resembles dmocx.dll.
Manually checking many devices and comparing driver versions is tedious when the actual problem is unclear. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its driver installation features require the full version, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when that application owns the failure.
Should you run regsvr32?
dmocx.dll is a COM-style DLL, and inventories report standard registration exports including DllRegisterServer and DllUnregisterServer. That means regsvr32 can apply in a narrow situation where the error specifically reports a missing COM class or registration failure.
It is not the normal first repair for a missing or corrupted Windows file. Registration cannot repair a wrong-version DLL, replace a missing file, fix a damaged component store, or correct an architecture mismatch.
Use the matching command only after confirming that the file exists and the error points to registration.
For a 64-bit copy:
%windir%System32regsvr32.exe "%windir%System32dmocx.dll"
For a 32-bit copy on 64-bit Windows:
%windir%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe "%windir%SysWOW64dmocx.dll"
Run the command from an elevated Command Prompt. A successful message indicates that registration completed. It does not prove that the DLL is healthy or that the application will work.
If regsvr32 reports that the module could not be loaded, the file may be missing, corrupted, the wrong architecture, or dependent on another damaged component. If it reports that an entry point was not found, check that you used the correct file and registration tool.
What not to do
Do not download dmocx.dll from a random DLL site
A download may have the wrong:
- Windows build
- Architecture
- Language
- Version
- Digital signature
- Dependency set
It may also contain unwanted or malicious code. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder can mask the real problem, create version conflicts, and interfere with Windows servicing.
Safe sources are Windows itself, Microsoft repair and recovery tools, official Windows installation media, System Restore, and the original application installer.
Do not install unrelated runtimes first
Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, and .NET are not logical first fixes for a Windows-owned dmocx.dll. Install or repair one of those packages only when the exact error also names a component from that package.
Do not use regsvr32 repeatedly
Registration is specialized. Running both 32-bit and 64-bit commands at random can leave you unsure which component was registered and will not fix a corrupted binary.
Do not assume the filename proves authenticity
Check the path and digital signature. A file in an application’s temporary folder or an unusual user-writable directory deserves more scrutiny than a protected Windows system copy.
If SFC cannot repair some files
If SFC reports that it could not repair some files:
- Restart Windows.
- Run DISM again:
cmd
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Restart Windows.
- Run:
cmd
sfc /scannow
- Test the affected program again.
If the problem remains, inspect the CBS log for the repair result and check whether storage errors are present. Back up important files if corruption keeps returning. Repeated file damage can point to filesystem or storage problems rather than one missing DLL.
If Windows cannot boot or built-in tools fail, enter the Windows Recovery Environment and use its repair options. An in-place repair installation using matching official Windows media may be appropriate, but the exact procedure depends on the Windows edition and release.
When malware investigation is warranted
A missing dmocx.dll file is not, by itself, evidence of malware. Investigate further when:
- The file appears outside normal Windows or application directories.
- Its digital signature is missing or invalid.
- Antivirus repeatedly detects it.
- The file returns after deletion.
- Other unfamiliar programs or pop-ups appear.
- Windows files continue becoming corrupted after repair.
Run a full scan, and use an offline scan when Windows Security recommends it. Do not restore a quarantined copy until you understand why it was detected.

FAQ
Is dmocx.dll a legitimate Windows file?
Yes. dmocx.dll is identified as TreeView OCX, a Microsoft Windows Operating System component. Its absence or corruption can still be caused by damage, quarantine, an incomplete update, or a failing storage device.
Does every Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer have the same copy?
No. Windows releases and architectures use different builds. Do not rely on one universal version, size, hash, or location.
Should I copy it from another computer?
No. The other computer may have a different Windows build, architecture, language, or component state. Use DISM, SFC, System Restore, Windows recovery, or the original installer.
Is dmocx.dll stored in System32 or SysWOW64?
It may be found in System32, and a 32-bit copy may be present in SysWOW64 on 64-bit Windows. The application architecture determines which copy is relevant.
Will reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix it?
Usually not. Those packages are unrelated to this Windows-owned TreeView OCX unless the error also identifies one of their components.
Should I register the DLL?
Only when the error specifically indicates COM or class-registration failure, and only with the architecture-matched regsvr32.exe. Repair Windows first for missing or corrupted-file errors.
What should I include when asking for help?
Provide the exact error text, Windows version, affected application, path shown in the message, whether the file exists in System32 or SysWOW64, and the final results from DISM and SFC. Also mention whether the issue began after an update, software installation, antivirus action, or storage problem.
