wldcore.dll is a Windows Live Client shared library, not a normal Windows system DLL. If Windows Live Mail or another Windows Live Essentials application reports that wldcore.dll is missing, the safest fix is to restore it from the existing Windows Live installation or repair the original suite.
Do not download this file from a random DLL website. A replacement may be tampered with, built for the wrong architecture, or missing companion files such as wldlog.dll. Windows Live Essentials is discontinued, so treat any remaining installation as legacy software and back up your data before changing it.
What is wldcore.dll?
wldcore.dll is described as the Windows Live Client Shared Platform Module. It was developed by Microsoft for Windows Live Client and was used by applications in the Windows Live Essentials family, including:
- Windows Live Mail
- Windows Live Messenger
- Windows Live Contacts
- Other related Windows Live applications
It normally belongs in a folder like:
C:Program FilesWindows LiveShared
On 64-bit Windows running the 32-bit version of Windows Live Essentials, the path is usually:

C:Program Files (x86)Windows LiveShared
This is not the same as a Windows component stored in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Do not copy a downloaded DLL into either Windows system folder.
Typical messages include:
The program can't start because WLDCore.dll is missing from your computer.WLDCore.dll was not foundwlmail.exe - System ErrorWLDCore.dll is not designed to run with Windows or it contains an error.
Fix 1: Check the Windows Live Shared folder
Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes
The first thing I check in the shop is whether the DLL is already present. Windows Live repairs and incomplete installations sometimes leave shared files in the Shared directory while the individual application folder cannot find them.
1. Close Windows Live applications
Close Windows Live Mail, Messenger, Contacts, and any related processes. If an application remains open, restart Windows before continuing.
2. Check both possible installation locations
In File Explorer, check:
C:Program FilesWindows LiveShared
Then check:
C:Program Files (x86)Windows LiveShared
Look for:
wldcore.dll
wldlog.dll
The correct path depends on where Windows Live Essentials is installed. A 32-bit Windows Live installation commonly uses Program Files, even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Do not mix files between the two installation trees.

3. Find the affected application folder
Depending on the error, check for one of these folders:
C:Program FilesWindows LiveMail
C:Program FilesWindows LiveMessenger
C:Program FilesWindows LiveContacts
Or, for the 32-bit suite on 64-bit Windows:
C:Program Files (x86)Windows LiveMail
C:Program Files (x86)Windows LiveMessenger
C:Program Files (x86)Windows LiveContacts
4. Copy the files
If wldcore.dll exists in Shared, copy it into the affected application folder. Also copy wldlog.dll when it is present, because copying only the main DLL may leave the application unable to start.
For example, in an elevated Command Prompt, the 32-bit suite on 64-bit Windows would use:
copy "C:Program Files (x86)Windows LiveSharedwldcore.dll" "C:Program Files (x86)Windows LiveMail"
copy "C:Program Files (x86)Windows LiveSharedwldlog.dll" "C:Program Files (x86)Windows LiveMail"
For Messenger, change the destination:
copy "C:Program Files (x86)Windows LiveSharedwldcore.dll" "C:Program Files (x86)Windows LiveMessenger"
copy "C:Program Files (x86)Windows LiveSharedwldlog.dll" "C:Program Files (x86)Windows LiveMessenger"
Use the equivalent Program Files paths if that is where your Windows Live installation exists.
5. Test the application
Start Windows Live Mail or the affected program normally. If it opens, the problem was probably that the shared DLL was present but not in the directory expected by the application.
If Windows reports a bad-image error after copying, remove the copied files and continue with repair or reinstall steps. That error can indicate a damaged file or an architecture mismatch.
Fix 2: Repair Windows Live Essentials
Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes
If wldcore.dll is absent from every Windows Live folder, or copying it does not help, repair the suite. The installer may contain an option named Repair all Windows Essentials programs.
Try the classic repair path
- Press
Windows key + R. - Enter:
text
appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- Select Windows Essentials or Windows Live Essentials.
- Choose Uninstall/Change.
- Select Repair or Repair all Windows Essentials programs.
- Follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows when the process finishes.
- Test Windows Live Mail or the affected application.
If Windows 11 shows the program in its modern app settings, you can also check:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the relevant Windows Live entry.
- Open its menu and choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
The classic Control Panel route is more likely to expose repair options for this older desktop suite.
Windows Essentials 2012 reached end of support on January 10, 2017, and Microsoft no longer provides the suite as a current download. If repair is unavailable, use only an original, trusted installer that you already possess or that your organization has verified. Back up Windows Live Mail data before uninstalling anything.

This item does not include a key code or a license. You must have your own key code to use the install option otherwise you will get a non-genuine message.
If Windows Installer refuses to remove or repair the suite, Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter may help clear damaged installation records. Do not delete Windows Live folders manually before dealing with the registered installation.
Fix 3: Reinstall from a trusted original installer
Time needed: 20 to 45 minutes
Use this step when:
wldcore.dllis missing fromShared- repair completes but the error remains
- the DLL produces a “contains an error” or bad-image message
- the installation was partially removed
- several Windows Live applications fail together
Before uninstalling:
- Back up your Windows Live Mail data.
- Record any account settings you still need.
- Export contacts if the application opens.
- Save the original installer in a known location.
- Check whether antivirus software quarantined any Windows Live files.
Then:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select Windows Live Essentials.
- Choose Uninstall/Change.
- Remove the suite only after your data is backed up.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the verified original installer.
- Install the applications you still need.
- Restart again.
- Test the affected program.
A reinstall should recreate the Windows LiveShared folder and the application directories. If it does not, the installer may be incomplete, incompatible with the current system, or blocked by damaged Windows Installer data.

Do not treat a successful reinstall as a return to supported software. Windows Live Essentials and Windows Live Mail are discontinued and do not receive current security or compatibility updates.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
A security product may have removed wldcore.dll, but a quarantine entry does not prove the file was safe. Malware can use a familiar DLL name, and restoring a malicious file can put the computer at risk.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the application.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections related to Windows Live or
wldcore.dll. - Check the detected file path and threat details.
Restore the file only if it came from a trusted, verified Windows Live installation and you have independently confirmed the detection was incorrect. Do not add a broad exclusion for the Windows Live folder merely to make the error disappear.
If the file was detected as malware, leave it quarantined, run a full scan, and reinstall Windows Live Essentials from a trusted source rather than restoring the questionable copy.
Fix 5: Repair broader Windows component corruption
Time needed: 15 to 40 minutes
wldcore.dll is an application DLL, not a protected Windows component. SFC will generally not recreate it. Use DISM and SFC when Windows has other symptoms, such as damaged system applications, update failures, unexplained crashes, or multiple unrelated Windows errors.
Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Restart Windows if requested.
Then run SFC
Open an administrator Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows and test the affected application.
If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, test Windows generally as well as Windows Live. If it reports that it could not repair some files, repeat the check only after DISM has completed successfully. Neither command is a substitute for reinstalling the discontinued Windows Live suite.

Fix 6: Stop a browser mail link from launching Windows Live Mail
Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes
Sometimes Windows Live Mail works when opened directly, but the error appears when you click an email address or mailto: link in Chrome or Firefox. In that situation, the browser is invoking Windows Live Mail as the registered mail handler. The problem is not necessarily the browser itself.
To change the Windows mail association:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Default apps.
- Search for the current mail application or select the default listed for email.
- Choose a currently supported mail application.
- Close and reopen the browser.
- Test the
mailto:link.
You can also search Windows Settings for Choose default apps by protocol, then change the MAILTO association. If Windows Live Mail is the only configured mail handler, install or configure a supported mail application first.
If the error occurs only through browser links, changing the default is often more sensible than continuing to patch an obsolete integration.
Fix 7: Update or reinstall related drivers only when evidence points there
Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes
A graphics, storage, or chipset driver does not normally install wldcore.dll, so Device Manager is not a first-line repair for this error. Use it only if Windows is also showing device failures, crashes, or hardware-related warnings.

- Review the General and Driver tabs.
- Use Update driver only for a device that is actually reporting a problem.
- Restart Windows after a driver change.
Do not expect Windows Features, DirectX, Visual C++, or .NET installation to provide wldcore.dll. There is no verified basis for using those redistributables as a repair for this file.
Manually checking drivers one at a time can mean hunting through many vendor packages and guessing which version matters. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver updates; installing drivers is handled by the full version, and it will not replace the need to repair Windows Live Essentials when that is the actual cause.
Why copying the file may not work
The copy workaround is specific to a legacy Windows Live layout. It can fail when:

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
wldlog.dllis also missing- another Windows Live dependency is damaged
- the copied file belongs to a different architecture
- the source file is corrupted

- the error is caused by a stale browser association
Copy only between matching Windows Live directories. Never download a DLL merely because its filename matches.

Should you run regsvr32 wldcore.dll?
No, not routinely.
regsvr32 is a registration tool for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a generic missing-DLL repair command. Running:
regsvr32 wldcore.dll
may produce an error stating that the required entry point was not found, and it will not restore a missing or damaged Windows Live installation.
FAQ
Is wldcore.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with Windows Live Client and Windows Live Essentials. Do not search for it in System32 or SysWOW64 as though it were a standard Windows component.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhich folder is correct on 64-bit Windows?
A 32-bit Windows Live installation commonly uses:
C:Program Files (x86)Windows Live
The architecture of the Windows Live suite matters. Check where its other folders, such as Mail and Shared, actually exist.
Should I copy wldcore.dll manually?
Only when the file already exists in a trusted Windows LiveShared folder. Copy it to the affected Windows Live application folder, and usually copy wldlog.dll with it. This is a legacy workaround, not a general DLL repair method.
Should I download wldcore.dll from a DLL website?
No. The file may be modified, mismatched, incomplete, or malicious. A verified original Windows Live installation is safer than an isolated download.
Will Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix this error?
There is no verified evidence that a current Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET redistributable installs wldcore.dll. Repair or reinstall Windows Live Essentials instead.
