Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before copying files or changing Windows settings, record:
- The program name: Which application displays the
msimrt16.dllerror? - When it appears: During installation, when launching the program, or after an update or antivirus scan?
- The executable: Note the
.exename shown in the error or Task Manager. - Windows architecture: Open Settings → System → About and check System type.
- The installation source: Determine whether the program came from original CD media, an archived installer, or an unverified download.
msimrt16.dll is a real, very old Microsoft application DLL. msimrt16.dll is associated with Microsoft’s historical Music Technology/AART component and is strongly linked with Office 97 and PowerPoint Viewer 97, not with a current Windows installation.
The safest fix is to identify the application requesting it and repair or reinstall that application from trusted original media. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website and place it in System32 or SysWOW64.
What is msimrt16.dll?
Historical Microsoft Office file lists place MSIMRT16.DLL beside related files including:

MSIMRT.DLLMSIMRT32.DLLMSIMUSIC.DLL
The historical file list records MSIMRT16.DLL as 10,544 bytes. Archived Microsoft documentation for PowerPoint Viewer 97 also lists it among the viewer’s runtime files.
Third-party file inventories describe the internal name as AART95 and associate the component with Microsoft Music Technology. Those labels are useful clues, but they are not the same as a current Microsoft product specification.
The filename strongly suggests that it is the 16-bit member of a runtime family that also included 32-bit files. It is not established as a protected component of current Windows, a Visual C++ runtime, a DirectX file, a .NET file, or a device driver.
Is it part of Windows?
No current evidence shows that msimrt16.dll is a protected Windows system file. It appears in historical Office and PowerPoint Viewer file sets instead.

That distinction matters. Windows tools such as System File Checker repair protected Windows components. They are not a normal source for an old application DLL that was installed by Office-era software.
Which programs used it?
The strongest historical associations are:
- Microsoft Office 97 components
- Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer 97
- Other older software that bundled Microsoft Music Technology or related AART runtime files
The error message alone does not prove which program needs the file. The parent application named in the dialog, shortcut, installer, or Event Viewer entry is more useful than the DLL filename.
Why this error appears on Windows 10 or Windows 11
There are several likely causes, but they do not all have the same solution.
| Likely cause | What it means | Appropriate response |
|---|---|---|
| Incomplete installation | The parent application did not copy all required files | Repair or reinstall that application |
| Uninstall or cleanup | A shared-looking file was removed with old software | Reinstall the original application |
| Antivirus quarantine | Security software removed or isolated the file | Review quarantine, then reinstall from trusted media |
| 16-bit incompatibility | The application or installer requires unsupported 16-bit code | Use a suitable older environment or replace the software |
| Corrupted Windows components | General system corruption is causing unrelated failures | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Wrong installer | A later or unrelated package does not contain this file | Locate the original application media |
The most important issue is architecture. Microsoft states that 64-bit Windows does not support 16-bit programs or 16-bit program components. NTVDM support is limited to x86 editions of Windows; x64 and ARM editions do not provide that 16-bit support.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the parent application
This is the most likely fix when the application itself can still run an installer or has a repair option.

If the program is listed in Windows
- Save your work and close the affected program.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the application that reports
msimrt16.dll. - Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, Modify, or Repair, depending on what the installer provides.
- Complete the repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the application again.
If there is no repair option, use the application’s original uninstall command, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the original licensed CD, trusted installer, or vendor-provided archive.
Do not uninstall first if you no longer have the original installation media. Removing the existing copy can leave you with no practical way to restore the program.

Treat it as legacy software rather than as a missing modern runtime.
Use the original installation media if available:
- Insert the original disc or mount the trusted installation image.
- Open the disc in File Explorer.
- Run the installer only if Windows can execute it.
- Choose Repair, Typical, or the equivalent option if offered.
- Restart the computer.
- Test the original application.
Microsoft’s old Office Viewers have been retired and are no longer supported security-maintained products. The later PowerPoint Viewer 2010 SP2 package should not be treated as a confirmed source for msimrt16.dll.
How to tell whether this fix worked
The repair succeeded only if the original program launches and performs the function that previously failed. A successful installer does not prove compatibility. If the application now reports another missing file, fails silently, or crashes after opening, the old program likely has additional dependencies or an architecture problem.
Fix 2: Check whether Windows is 64-bit
A 16-bit DLL cannot be made compatible with x64 Windows by copying it into another folder.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Find System type.
- Record whether Windows is 32-bit operating system, 64-bit operating system, or an ARM edition.
If the system is x64 or ARM and the application requires 16-bit components, the dependable choices are:
- Replace the application with a current supported program.
- Run the old program inside a virtual machine with an appropriate older 32-bit Windows release.
- Use a separate compatible 32-bit Windows installation for the legacy workload.
A compatibility setting on a program shortcut can help with some older 32-bit applications, but it does not add 16-bit support to x64 Windows.
If the error appears during installation
The installer itself may be 16-bit. In that case, Windows may fail before it can copy any files.
Microsoft documents limited installer substitution behavior, but it does not make arbitrary 16-bit applications compatible with x64 Windows. If the installer will not run, do not work around it by downloading a loose copy of msimrt16.dll. Use a compatible older environment or obtain a newer installer from the original software publisher.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may have removed the DLL, especially after an old application was restored from backup or copied from removable media. Do not assume every detection is a false positive.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the old application or
msimrt16.dll. - Review the detected path, detection name, and action taken.
- If the file came from untrusted media or an unknown download, leave it quarantined.
- Run a full malware scan.
- Obtain a clean copy of the entire parent application from its original trusted source.
- Reinstall the application rather than restoring only the DLL.
If a known, licensed installation disc was quarantined and the file path matches the original application directory, consult your security product’s documentation before restoring it. Reinstalling from clean original media is usually safer than manually restoring one DLL.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and SFC are useful when Windows itself is damaged or other protected system files are failing. They are not a guaranteed source for msimrt16.dll.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
DISM may take time and can appear to pause. Let it finish unless it reports an error.
A result stating that SFC found and repaired corrupted files indicates that protected Windows files were repaired. It does not confirm that msimrt16.dll was restored. If the same application still reports the DLL missing, return to the application repair or compatibility steps.
Repeatedly running SFC without identifying what changed usually does not solve a missing legacy application file. If you want help sorting through system repair results without manually comparing long command outputs, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows problems; its free scan shows findings, while repair actions require the full version. Reinstalling the specific legacy application remains the definitive fix when that application owns the missing file.
Fix 5: Do not copy the DLL into System32 or SysWOW64
Do not use either directory as a generic DLL drop location.
On 64-bit Windows:
System32primarily contains native 64-bit Windows components.SysWOW64contains many 32-bit Windows components.- Neither directory is a supported dumping ground for an old application DLL.
Copying the file into SysWOW64 does not give x64 Windows a 16-bit execution layer. Copying it into System32 can create conflicts, confuse future troubleshooting, or leave the application with other missing dependencies.
The correct location, if the file is legitimately needed, is normally determined by the original application installer. Let that installer place the file and create any required entries.
Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 for this error
regsvr32 is not a general missing-DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer.

It may produce an architecture error, report that an entry point is missing, or appear to succeed without restoring the application’s other files and dependencies.
Use regsvr32 only when the application vendor specifically documents that a particular DLL must be registered and provides the correct architecture and command. For msimrt16.dll, reinstalling the parent application is the safer approach. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains the command’s actual purpose.
Fix 7: Check drivers only when the failure is broader
msimrt16.dll is not established as a graphics, audio, printer, or chipset driver file. Reinstalling drivers should not be the primary fix for this DLL.
Check Device Manager only if the same computer also has hardware failures, display problems, or an application that depends on a specific legacy device.

It is not a substitute for reinstalling the legacy application that actually requests msimrt16.dll.
Fix 8: Use a virtual machine or replace the application
If the original program is genuinely 16-bit, there may be no direct fix for running it on modern 64-bit Windows.
Use a virtual machine when
- The program contains important historical files or presentations.
- You still have legitimate installation media.
- The workflow cannot be replaced immediately.
- The software does not need unrestricted access to modern hardware.
Install an appropriate older 32-bit Windows environment in the virtual machine, keep it isolated from the internet where practical, and make a backup of the virtual disk. Install the legacy application inside that environment rather than copying DLLs from it into the host operating system.
Use a separate 32-bit installation when
- The application must access hardware that a virtual machine cannot expose correctly.
- The old workload is operationally important.
- The organization can maintain the older system separately and securely.
A 32-bit environment is not automatically safe or fully compatible, so treat it as a dedicated legacy workstation rather than a general-purpose replacement for current Windows.
Replace the application when
- The original installer is unavailable.
- The application cannot run in a supported environment.
- The files can be opened or converted by current software.
- The old program handles sensitive data and cannot be isolated safely.
Do not download an unofficial “fixed” copy of the DLL as a replacement for the application. A matching filename does not establish the file’s authenticity, architecture, dependencies, or safety.
What to do if the original installer is unavailable
Work through these steps in order:
- Identify the exact executable and application name.
- Search company records for the original CD, licensed installer, or deployment image.
- Ask the software owner or vendor whether an archived installer is still available.
- Check whether the required documents can be opened in a current supported application.
- Preserve the old computer or disk image before experimenting with uninstallers and cleanup tools.
- If the program is essential, plan a compatible virtual machine or isolated legacy workstation.
- If it is not essential, remove the abandoned application and use a supported replacement.
Do not treat PowerPoint Viewer 2010 SP2 as a confirmed source of this file. It is a later viewer package and does not establish a repair path for the old runtime.
When nothing works
Record the following before asking for further help:
- The full error message
- The executable named in the message
- The application name and version
- The full path Windows is requesting
- Windows edition and build
- Whether the system is x86, x64, or ARM
- Whether the error occurs during installation or launch
- The original installer source
- Any antivirus quarantine event
- The result of DISM and SFC
This information distinguishes an incomplete application installation from an unsupported 16-bit program. Without it, replacing the DLL blindly is unlikely to produce a reliable result.
FAQ
Is msimrt16.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is associated with historical Microsoft application software, especially Office-era components and PowerPoint Viewer 97. It should not be treated as a current protected Windows component.
Is it part of Microsoft Music Technology?
Historical third-party inventories associate it with Microsoft Music Technology and identify the internal name as AART95. The strongest practical clue is still the parent application requesting the file.
Is msimrt16.dll 16-bit or 32-bit?
The name strongly indicates the 16-bit member of a runtime family that included both 16-bit and 32-bit files. Microsoft states that x64 Windows does not support 16-bit program components.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. System32 is not a universal DLL folder, and copying the file there is not a supported repair.
Should I copy it to SysWOW64?
No. SysWOW64 does not make a 16-bit DLL compatible with 64-bit Windows.
Will Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET reinstall it?
There is no established basis for treating those packages as the source of this historical DLL. Repair the application that requests it instead.
Can SFC restore msimrt16.dll?
SFC repairs protected Windows files. It may fix broader Windows corruption, but it should not be expected to restore this old application DLL.
Why did the error appear after reinstalling an old program?
The reinstall may have been incomplete, may have skipped an optional legacy component, or may be running on an operating system that cannot execute the program’s 16-bit code. Reinstall from the original media and check the Windows architecture.
What is the safest solution on Windows 11?
Identify the parent program first. If it is a 16-bit Office-era application, use a suitable isolated legacy environment or replace it. Do not rely on a loose DLL download.
